I saw a business card on the community bulletin board down in the laundry room of my apartment just as I was doing three loads of laundry preparing for a visit from my in-laws. The business card was for NYC Supermaid cleaning service, and I figured I would give them a call and get an estimate for them to help me clean my apartment while I tried to get the kids ready for their grandparents to visit, and also so I could go get groceries for the week for my kids' school lunches and for the family dinners we were about to cook. (I also wanted a little extra time to circle by the wine store, and you can insert any reason here for wanting to do just that.). The estimate I received, along with an agreeable timeframe for the cleaning to occur sounded perfect! Instead of paying for a manicure/pedicure this week, I decided to treat myself to this cleaning and I would do my nails myself (sticking to my budget). Before work on the day before my in-laws were expected, I left my apartment key with my apartment building's doorman and of the girls from the cleaning service came by while I was at work. When I got home, I cannot even begin to express the relieving feeling that came over me when I saw how clean my apartment was. It was so clean I didn't even want to put my purse or briefcase down! The sense of calm that washed over me after that long day at work while thinking about entertaining my in-laws was more relaxing than if I had had three mani-pedis in a row! Seeing everything in order, everything in a place that made sense, seeing a fridge that was MTV Cribs tour-worthy, seeing zero fingerprints on the glass surfaces, seeing zero dust along the baseboards, seeing the early evening's golden light bouncing off of the freshly polished coffee table, etc., don't ask me how, but it gave me new energy to go get my groceries and visit the wine store right then. Seeing my to-do list beautifully melted down with the help of this cleaning service made me feel like I had taken such a short cut in all of the many items I felt I would never have the time to accomplish. I got the groceries and the wine and slept peacefully that night. I even got enough sleep to be able to entertain my in-laws throughout the weekend instead of wishing I had a moment to catch up on sleep.
