Lunch in Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii... I saw a friend check in on her Yelp app here in Manoa Marketplace. I didn't know where O-Bok Korean Restaurant was, so I asked a different friend... LOL! She said her family went there often - in the past - when there was a different owner. I had no idea. O-Bok was between the US Post Office and Lady Elaine. We easily found a parking space in the shared, free lot. Inside, this restaurant has an old school vibe with some of the vinyl benches' rips taped up. Our server had us sit at one of the booths with a taped up bench... Haha! That's ok... I ordered the cold noodles. I liked the chewy texture. I should have used the scissors that were provided, but nah... I added some vinegar to the broth for a change up. It was refreshing and light. The half of a hard boiled egg was alright. This was a casual, reliable, straightforward place for local style Korean food. We appreciated the four included banchan: broccoli, kimchi, japchae (delicious), and bean sprouts! The ice cold water had a slight touch of lemon in it! Thank you!

I tried O-Bok again...getting the Bulgogi Plate for takeaway. Eatery was empty and my request was given in 8 minutes. Bulogogi was well seasoned. Portion was reasonable and commensurate with the price. Banchan: potatoes in syrup, kim chi ( local standards if just a bit spicy ), two broccoli spears and Jap Chae...plain. Solid Korean takeout fare.

A Korean food staple in Manoa Marketplace, O-Bok has been around for a good stretch of time. It is now located by Lady Elaine and across/behind the elevators to the 2nd floor of the marketplace. While it is a bit tucked into the marketplace, it is worth looking for! There is seating inside with booths and a counter towards the back of the restaurant. The lights are low and the restaurant feels like a more old school Korean spot. The menu is not overbearing and offers solid options such as juns, specials, soups, barbecue, and more. There is also some seating outside around the marketplace, should you want to take your food and eat outside. We usually get the meat jun, bibimbap, and combo set b. The service is always efficient and usually they are pretty nice. The prices are not bad for the portions, which are pretty big. They usually last us a couple of meals. Especially the combo. However, the bibimbap portion is a bit small. Otherwise, we enjoy coming to O-Bok and will be back!

We've been to O-Bok to dine in pre-pandemic and for takeout a couple of times since. However, we don't come here enough, so it took a minute to realize that even though the physical space looks the same (perhaps the wallpaper was updated?) and new menus were made and put up, the people working are different. I presume ownership has changed hands, which also means ingredients, taste, portion, and prices have changed. O-Bok has always been somewhat pricier than other local Korean eateries, in my opinion. The prices on the menu didn't seem to have changed much, but the portions seem are a bit smaller--only one scoop of rice for each plate, and the tonkatsu plate doesn't come with rice (but the soondubu does). Not a deal breaker for me but the hubs was surprised. The banchans portions were also smaller. However, the man owner who waited on us (while wife cooked) asked if we wanted more rice and/or banchans. For two adults and a growing teenage boy, we ordered a combo plate, bulgogi plate, tonkatsu plate, seafood pancake, and soondubu. The plan was to take home what's lefto for my lunch but we finished everything! The husband kept commenting on how small his combo was, but his spicy pork and fish jun looked freshly made. My bulgogi plate came with a lot of meat, tasty but kind of dry. There were two pieces of thin crispy tonkatsu smothered in a mushroom (I think) gravy. The seafood pancake was the standard size but slightly thicker but still crispy and yummy. The soondubu was milder than expected. Total bill came to just under $100 before tax and gratuity. Food came out quick though, given there's only one cook! There were a few takeout orders and some more people came to dine in after us.

This was a 'full' order of miso soup. Still hungry after.

A picture tells a thousand words. I'll leave my 2 pictures of the miso soup and the banchan that comes with it..... for $21!

I ordered Ubereats for some soup for a sick friend. On the Uber Eats app this place had 4.5 stars. What a scam. I got 1/2 a container of soup. How friggin hard is it to get the container at least close to full?!? This is barely 1/2 a container. This place is a scam.

We got the seafood pajeon, cold noodles in beef broth, meat jun, galbi-jjim, steamed egg pot, and bibimbap. No actual grilling was done but we weren't exactly here for that. We came here to try meat jun and ended up getting a little bit of everything else. Let me tell you something... the galbi-jjim here alone is enough to pay them a visit. If you don't know what galbi-jjim is, let me explain it real quick. Galbi-jjim is a popular Korean dish of tender, braised short ribs, typically beef or pork, cooked in a savory-sweet soy sauce-based liquid with garlic, ginger, and often fruits like pear or apple for sweetness and tenderizing. It was perfectly savory and saucy, fall-off-the-bone tender, and I want to scream just thinking about it. The first bite alone had me sitting back in my seat. Had I been wearing a hat, I would have taken it off and held it over my heart. It was that good. And since it was my birthday, they brought over a complimentary seaweed soup and a tower of Choco Pies. They even sang Happy Birthday to me and made me blush. Solid eats and excellent service. The parking situation seems nerve racking but they have an attendant at both sides of the restaurant that helps stop traffic to help get you out of there which I found pretty cool!

I really enjoy the Korean comfort foods! 4 stars for the food, soups, and ban chan, 5 stars if the service was great. Typical service you will get at a Korean spot but no complaints. Just gotta be patient for ban chan refills or if you need anything else, I don't expect much just happy that I get to have my Korean food. During this recent Saturday visit, I decided to go here for our late lunch, after hiking Koko Head Trail & Makapuu. It was about 4:30 pm, we were the only ones there, but it filled up pretty quick an and they do have many take out and Uber/Door Dash orders. My favorites here are the combo set, choice of soondubu (combination, kim chee, spam, beef, sausage, clam,) & either meat jun, fried mandoo, bulgogi, yellow corvina, seafood jun, or BBQ chicken. The combo use to be $20.55 my first time but now went up to $23.55, hence the increase, it is still a great deal, this meal comes with rice and 5 different ban chan. This combo was more than enough for the both of us. My favorite is the spam soondubu ( yes. who picks Spam right?! hehe) & the seafood Jun. Although it so hard to decide since all the choices are good, I will have to visit again for the other selection. The other half and I cannot eat an entire combo set by ourselves. I love the ban chan, especially the daikon & kim chee, so fresh and crispy! When I first dined here, I was surprise to see they give you a fresh egg to crack in your soondubu soup, I am use to the egg already in there. We always have leftover soondu soup which I take home and add to my Korean ramen the next day, so good! Support this local mom & pop restaurant, So Gong Dong has been around for the longest time just only recently I've discovered it. I will be back for the next Korean soondubu, ban chan fix!

For the meats, the beef brisket and beef toro were the stars, but the beef chuck was slightly tough and dry. They were also out of bulgogi, which was disappointing. The pork had a really strong boar taint smell/taste, which completely turned me off from ordering any of the pork. We had to ask for more meat and banchan refills multiple times. There was usually a pretty noticeable lag before anything came out, which was frustrating for an AYCE spot. They also seemed to be selective about which banchans they would refill.
