O'Brien's Ice Cream in Walnut Creek is one of my favorite spots for unique and adventurous flavors. I especially love their cheese and avocado ice creams - flavors that are hard to find anywhere else. This shop was originally a Mexican ice cream spot, and when it changed ownership, I was worried they would get rid of the flavors I loved. Thankfully, the menu remains pretty much the same. Since it's in a large shopping center, parking is easy, which makes stopping by even more convenient. My friend had a gift card so he invited me out to come try this place with him. At first, we went to the Martinez location, but found out it was like a small booth instead of the store, so we rerouted ourselves and went to their Walnut Creek Location. Inside is a small space for sitting. Their menu is pretty straightforward and they let you sample flavors. Being a sherbet kinda guy, I opted to try their Maui Waui. Maui Waui: This is one of two flavors I got. The flavors of this sherbet reminded me of being on the tropical island. It felt refreshing and delicious. If I had to guess the flavors, it has to be a medley of POG (Passion Fruit, Orange, Guava). Not only did it look like those three fruits, but it was reminiscent of those flavors. For a scoop, it was a healthy amount. Raspberry: This was my second flavor and it was as tart as I expected it to be. The sweet yet tangy flavor really shined for me. Pretty solid spot to satisfy your ice cream cravings! It is just a short walk from Safeway - very convenient especially if you just happen to need to get groceries at the same time. First off, our ice cream scooper was very friendly and able to answer questions we had about each flavor, gave us samples, and generous scoops of our chosen flavors. We got a scoop of the rice pudding and the chongos zamoranos. The rice pudding flavor felt very light and fluffy with rice bits in it. The chongos zamoranos felt like a horchata with chewy bits of milk curds (sounds interesting but it was actually pretty good!) And for two scoops it only cost us $10.. which if you compare to other big/popular chain ice cream shops this is a steal. Definitely would come back again! I stopped by on a Wednesday evening around 7pm and there was no wait at all. I was served immediately. Perhaps since it was closer to closing time and on a winter evening, I noticed there were no chairs or tables set out; not a biggie since I was just getting ice cream to go anyways, but I can't comment on their ambience. I grabbed a scoop of their strawberry sorbet. Loved it! Was super delicious and creamy and not icy at all. It had the texture of soft serve, despite it not containing dairy. Flavor was very distinctly "strawberry" and didn't taste artificial at all. Loved that there were little strawberry bits which added to the flavor and texture. A single scoop is very generous which I appreciated. O'Briens has one of the most diverse offerings I've seen. Haven't been coming by as regularly after they rebranded into O'brien's, but I realize that I've definitely been missing out. Stopped by a few months ago to satisfy my ice cream cravings, and O'Brien's did not disappoint! The ice cream here is super rich and creamy, but it's their wonderful flavors that get me every time. If you're a fan of Mexican ice cream, you will truly fall in love with this place. They have some delicious Mexican ice cream flavors that you won't usually find at regular ice cream shops. Some of my favorite ice cream flavors to get from here are Tequila, avocado, chongos, rum raisin, horchata, and rice pudding. Due to COVID, they stopped doing samples but hopefully they'll bring them back. The staff is always friendly and they keep the interior space really clean. The scoops are nice and hefty too. I stopped by O'Brian's Ice Cream in Walnut Creek to buy a milk shake for myself and one for an elderly friend. I ordered the two shakes (they only come in one medium size) and was charged $12.00. I thought $6.00/shake is a bit high but reasonable. The clerk made the first shake and handed it to me, and I said what about the second shake. He said, "Oh you ordered two shakes? That will be another $12.00 for the second shake. I was completely dumfounded. I ended up paying $24.00 for two mid-sized milk shakes that consisted of two ingredients - milk and ice cream! Unbelievable! To add insult to injury, the clerk wouldn't even give me the small amount of shake left in the blender that didn't fit in the plastic cup. read more

I typically never write bad reviews but this is for the owner. There's never a tip option on the tablet which makes no sense to me! These kids are amazing, kind, and always making the experience wonderful. It feels so selfish of the owner to only let the kids have a cash tip box when I know their system probably allows tips. Cmon man!! I don't know if this is laziness but the store could be FIVE STARS if they improved on this issue. Please fix this issue. Cute little neighborhood ice cream parlor. Clean and bright inside, extensive list of ice cream flavors, all made in house. My aunt ordered her "go-to" flavor: rose petal pistachio. I tasted it and found it lightly flavored with rose petals and chewy pistachios. My brother ordered the Maui tropical flavor (not exact name) which was yellow and dark orange swirled, tasting a bit like an "old-school" Missle Pop. I ordered a scoop of Mexican Chocolate, which tasted just like a frozen version of Mexican hot chocolate (rich chocolate enhanced with cinnamon). Can't believe tonight was my first time at O'Briens despite having lived in Walnut Creek for a year and a half. I had a cookie dough milkshake and it was amazing! So sweet and creamy. Place was quiet as I was the only customer there. I would have thought the place would be busy on Saturday night but at least I didn't have to wait. This family owned ice cream shop is located in the Countrywood Shopping Center near Jamba Juice. It used to be Guanatos- same delicious ice cream, just different owners. The interior hasn't changed from what I remember and you can still find Guanatos signage here and there. They are doing great with social distancing only allowing 5 people in the store at a time. O'Brien's is similar to Mitchell's in San Francisco. They feature exotic and unique flavors like Lucuma (subtly sweet notes of maple and caramel), Avocado, and Corn. The ice cream is rich, creamy, and indulgent. These are the flavors I grew up on. Still waiting for Ube to be on their menu! However, O'Brien's is more Latin based. Their menu includes Horchata (cinnamon rice milk), Chongos Zamoranos (milk cinnamon vanilla), Tequila, and Mexican Chocolate, to name a few. They do offer more familiar and kid friendly choices such as Cookies & Cream and Mint Chocolate Chip. There's something for everyone. They even serve sorbets, fruit bars (paletas), milkshakes, bionicos (fresh fruit cups with granola and other toppings drizzled with crema or condensed milk) and sugar free options. On my recent visit I ordered Banana (yum!) and Irish Cream. And always on a waffle cone! My daughter stuck with her two favorites, Horchata and Lucuma. Formerly named Guanato's Ice Cream. What a find in Walnut Creek! I did not expect this. The perfect solution for a hot day. I don't even know where to begin. Homemade ice cream. Most of the flavors are Mexican inspired. I got a scoop of the Cheese (Queso Cotija) & a scoop of their Horchata icecream. So so good. Too good... we had to get a pint of their Queso ice cream to go. I couldn't help but ask to try their tamarind sorbet & the corn. Both are also really good. Pricing is reasonable. Service was great. I guess we beat the rush because after 30 mins, the line was out the door and they only had one lady working. I gotta give it to her. She was grinding & no one had to wait a while. I read that I could purchase an orange creamsicle shake at this establishment. The girl who waited on me told me that was not possible! Also, when I asked about other flavors listed on the menu board, I was told they also were not available! Please update your menu board, or keep the flavors listed on it in stock! I ended up purchasing two strawberry shakes and one scoop of vanilla ice cream in a cup. Very disheartening and disappointing to leave without what I really came here for in the first place! Freindly staff , clean and sanitized environment, outside tables available, no inside seating available yet . Not a big fan of this place. I was excited when the fam and I stumbled across this place. My wife and kids enjoyed theirs pretty good, but me not so much. I had ordered a guava ice cream. When I got back to the car, I noticed it didn't taste like ice cream, but more like sorbet. So I sent the wife back into the shop (cause I was in the middle of something with the kids) and she politely told the worker that I got sorbet instead of ice cream. To our surprise, she refused to replace the order claiming that I had ordered sorbet. The wife walked out and relayed the story to me. So I went in and, politely of course, explained the situation. Again the worker told me I had ordered sorbet and she pointed to her notes. I then explained two things - I would have never ordered sorbet because it's my thinking that if I'm going out to waste calories, I'm gonna get my money's worth and get real ice cream. Not the fake gross non-fat stuff that is sorbet. Second, I told her that I distinctly remember the moment when she asked me if I wanted ice cream or sorbet. Why? Because when I responded, she was in the middle of telling her co-worker something over her shoulder. I thought, a bit rude, but whatever. In any case, even in the off chance I was making this story up, we're talking about a $3 ice cream cone. Just replace the thing and make your customers smile. I once was at a mom and pop ice cream store and saw a 10 year old girl spill her ice cream. The owner happily replaced her cone with a double scoop. Now that's how it's done! Little girl was happy and I'm sure the family has been back a bunch of times. I definitely left with a bad taste in my mouth. Literally, cause I didn't even like the ice cream anyway. Mmmm... my goodness I think this place is so underrated. I just tried here for the first time today. I've been on an ice cream hunt lately across the Bay Area for some delicious ice cream. I've tried Salt and Straw, Curbside from Oakland... and now O'Briens or originally, Guanatos. I tried the cheese flavor which is made out of cotija cheese. WOW, whoever came up with this idea I must say is a genius. The perfect amount of cheese and cream flavor. So balanced and you get the little cheesy bits from the cotija... it is magical. My new favorite. Also tried the rice pudding and it legitimately taste like rice pudding with all the bits of rice in it. Also very very good and tasty! I just love all the unique flavors here and can't wait to go back and try more. The creaminess and density of the ice cream is my style compared to other ice cream brands and companies. read more
