I have been here many times in the past, often bought pints to go. Today I popped in after the post office for a Dark Chocolate Almond. I have had their dark chocolate many times before. This was completely without flavor. No chocolate flavor of any kind. No almond flavor, though I thought I saw pieces. Sweet, creamy, cold with an odd rice milk after taste. But no flavor. I couldn't eat more than a Spoon or two. I took it home and asked my husband. Maybe the problem was me? Nope. He couldn't taste any flavors and was turned off by the rice milk undertone. We tossed it in the sink. What a waste. Is there new management or new recipes? read more

Ginger's Gelato and their partner Contra Costa Coffee were sponsors for Center for Human Development's 50th Anniversary Celebration in October. They were a highlight of the luncheon. They provided a variety of delicious gelatos, plus coffee service. I understand off-site coffee service but wondered how the gelato would work since the Lakeside Room at Heather Farm does not have a freezer. The helpful crew at Ginger's Gelato had it figured out. The cups of gelato were scooped ahead of time and packed in a portable freezer. The gelato was perfect. The only problem was deciding which flavor to pick. They had extras so I was not the only person who chose two different flavors. If you haven't discovered this shop tucked away in the shopping center near Bev Mo on Oak Grove Road, I suggest you go soon! You'll be glad you did. read more

What a major disappointment. First of all, one could easily pass by the shop and miss it. Now part of Contra Costa Coffee. There is a tiny sign in the window that says Ginger's gelatos. As for the gelatos, there was a very limited selection. Maybe 8 flavors? Nothing with nuts. We tried two flavors, a dark chocolate and their vegan mango coconut. Nothing to write home about. We expected more from the reviews, and walked out without gelato. read more

I was excited to try Ginger's based off their great reviews. However, I was pretty disappointed by my experience tonight. Gelato: 2.5/5 - Tonight we got the s'mores and tiramisu flavor. The smores was creamy and delicious, but had a coconut flavor - wasn't sure if it's a coconut base. The tiramisu was very icy and didn't really have a tiramisu flavor. Unsure if it was just tonight since others have said it's their favorite flavor, but it was not gelato. Waffle was delicious & my favorite part. I also wish they had stracciatella for scoops since it's a classic and not just available as pints since it's a classic. Price: decent price, no complaints Staff: I was very disappointed in their sanitary precautions, especially during this time. The cashier touched cash then went straight to scooping gelato. Even before covid, I would at least expect washing hands between touching the register and food. The staff helping me also had her hair half up & down, and would expect the hair at least tied back. I was hoping for a great experience based on others reviews and convenient locations. Overall, a pretty lackluster experience. Located in one of the quieter shopping centers in the area, Ginger's Gelato is just a few stores down from Ice Monster, and in the same parking lot as Nob Hill. While they don't have a wider variety of flavors, it's gelato, so how many flavors do gelato places usually offer anyways? When I made my visit during the evening, it wasn't busy, and we were the only ones there. The staff here were very friendly, or at least the specific staff that helped us with our gelato needs for the day. Definitely quite attentive in making sure if we had any questions, and gave us some good recommendations and knew their product well. Great staff. The cost of the gelato is basically on par with other gelato places. The portions here are generous. If you look at the cup sizes when you've reached the counter, they look like a very tiny cardboard cup, and at first that also sort of made me a bit hesitant regarding my expectations of the portions. However, once we made our order, you can see that they will make a huge scoop to stack on top of that tiny little cup, so it's not just so it fits into the cup, but more like playing jenga with the different scoops on top of it. So don't let these little tiny cups fool you at first glance. Now let's get to the gelato. We tried 4 flavors today: milk chocolate, coconut mango, vanilla, and almond butter. The milk chocolate was pretty good. It was exactly as advertised, chocolatey. The coconut mango was also nice and mangoey. I couldn't quite taste the coconut as well though, but the mango part of the flavor profile was good. The vanilla was interesting. It's not quite like your typical vanilla, and almost has a flowery flavor to it, which I couldn't quite pinpoint. It was good, but if you're expecting a typical vanilla, this probably won't fulfill that need. The almond butter was also good. I couldn't really taste the almondness of the flavoring, but it was creamy, and tasted good. It also comes with a waffle wafer, which was nice. They note that it's handmade, and that's cool and all, but I personally didn't really feel there was anything all that special about it. It's nice to have that to give the gelato a bit more crunchy of a texture. Overall, Ginger's Gelato, while not a flashy place, certainly gives you some tasty gelato options to choose from. While they aren't cheap, the portions do help make up for those prices. Just the 2 scoop cup is probably enough for your typical gelato eater. Staff was friendly and helpful, so no complaints at all. If you're a fan of gelato, you want to drop by Ginger's Gelato for a visit next time you're in the area. read more

Update for 2020. Now Ginger's Gelato serves Contra Costa Coffee (Under new ownership). The new owner is fantastic. She is friendly and always cheerful (don't piss her off). I had the beignets which are amazing. A soft powder desert that said YUMMY! It is worth getting when you come in. I have seen people try out the espresso, Coffee, and other drinks...you won't be disappointed on your drink order. I am impress with the redesign on the wall. They posted coffee bags which is unique. I LOVE Ginger's gelato! Hidden in a strip mall shopping center of Walnut Creek is some of the best gelato in the bay! My favorite is the Gianduia (chocolate hazelnut). The shop is cute and inviting and fun for a date night stop. On the weekends there's lots of families popping by too. The peanut butter, hazelnut and banana gelato is also delicious. Prices are reasonable and they sell pints in a freezer too. Pints are $10. Definitely visit if you remotely like gelato and are in the area. read more

The dark chocolate and triple chocolate cookies and cream were the perfect ending to my sushi meal. Smooth, rich flavorful and chocolatey when you have a craving for some gelato. Ever since our visit to Italy last year, we've been on the search for great gelato here in the East Bay. Ginger's Gelato brings the Italian-quality gelato I've been looking for. And its location in the Citrus Marketplace Shopping Center (off Citrus Ave), means Walnut Creek and Concord residents can easily come and go for a quick gelato fix. We've been several times now and each selection we've made has obviously been of the highest quality gelato. Sea Salt Caramel is my personal favorite (and also their #1 bestseller). I've also enjoyed pistachio and hazelnut, but must also mention the fruit flavors: they are amazing! Mango and pear particularly are the best I've ever had. Pints of gelato are available at $10 apiece. Our pint of Mango Sorbetto did not last long! You can sign up and become a member of Ginger's and accumulate points that you can use for future purchases. Who knew a trans-dimensional wormhole would open up in Walnut Creek? What are the odds? But it appears one has, centered at Ginger's Gelato. Because what's being served here clearly is straight from continental Europe. Their main item is gelato. They pasteurize their own milk (what?!) and then create gelato that is absolutely on par with what one would find in Italy. Speaking from experience here! Recently I had their pistachio and remarked that the flavor was super intense and accurate - best I've ever had. And ... apparently they import the nut paste directly from Italy. It shows. Same for all the other flavors. The ingredients are all top shelf and the end product reflects it. Even more to my taste, they have a La Spaziale double portafilter espresso machine. You want coffee - they've got coffee. And if you really want to be decadent, you can opt for an affogato (rich espresso over gelato). Yummmmm is what you'll say. You'll also find home baked croissants, cookies, waffles, and so forth. Is that all? Of course not! There's a large array of packaged delights. Cups and kettles and fresh Cafe Umbria coffee beans. Chocolates, pasta, cookies and cakes from Italy and France.  I'm munching on one of their Italian amaretti cookies as I type this, actually.  Inside it's super clean and inviting. They even have a hobbit sized table and chairs for the young ones as well as books and games. Oh, and parking is super easy - huge lot out front. Hmmm, I guess that about sums it up. Holy friggin' moly! What have I just been blessed with?! A GELATO shop in the DUB C! YAAASSS! My dreams have totally just come true. This gelato is theeee BOMB dot COMSYYY! This gelato shop is truly darling! It's bright, it's fun, it's enticing... and the gelato is delicious! When I found out that this place opened up, I rushed over there with the quickness. First of all, the owner Sabrina is a complete doll! She's super passionate about her business, and her infectious energy and excitement just exudes through her. She got me so excited to try the gelato waaay before I even tasted anything. She let me sample several flavors, all of which were amazingly tasty. Her gelato is rich and creamy with an unforgettable texture and taste that will have you begging for more. All of their gelatos are homemade and they offer 12 flavors that are rotated pretty frequently. I fell in love with their peanut butter chocolate and sea salt caramel and had to have both. Their scoops are very generous, and they'll let you select two different flavors for a small if you're indecisive like myself. The little waffle cone piece is the perfect touch! Speaking of waffle cones, they make those from scratch everyday too. I could smell the waffle cones as soon as I walked in! In addition to gelato (and sorbet), they also make hot drinks, carry homemade cookies, and they also sell lots of Italian goodies such as Italian sodas and dry pasta shells. They've got lots of old school board games and a handful of tables inside. While I was chatting with Sabrina, she told me a little bit about "Ginger" and the history of the original shop that Ginger had back in the day. She also revealed that they have plans to expand their menu. She wants to start offering crepes and a few other goodies in the future. I can't wait to try them out when she does! Stopped by for some gelato after hiking Mt. Diablo. They serve pre-packed pints, to-go gelato and baked goods, plus coffee. I ordered a small in the almond biscotti flavor and a pumpkin cobbler bar. Almond biscotti was VERY sweet, but the texture was good and there were chunks of biscotti in the gelato, which added some nice contrast too. Still, a little overly sweet for me and I probably wouldn't get that flavor again. The price for a small was $4.50, the cobbler bar was $3.50 for a total of $8 - reasonable prices! Overall, it was just decent not great but I'd come back again to try other flavors out! read more

This place becomes my favorite gelato store in the area! They used to have a cart at events and I already love them - so glad to see they finally opened a store! Their store is not in downtown but who cares - its at a plaza with a large parking lots so you don't have to worry about finding parking. The owners are super nice and they let me try out almost all their flavors before deciding what I should get. Their gelato is super creamy, rich and not too sweet and they make everything from scratch which is a plus. My favorite flavors are their pistachio and stracciatella. I knew I would love this place because um, gelato! The selection isn't huge but how many different flavors can you really eat in one visit? Plus, the flavors change every week. We had: White peach sorbet - very light flavor. Would recommend on its own since the other flavors are likely to overpower. Mango sorbet - really packs a mango punch! Caffe - this is what I always wish actual coffee would taste like! Coconut - very coconutty. No skimping on flavors here. Hazel chocolate - smooth, clean chocolate flavor (We bought a pint each of the coconut and hazel chocolate and mixed together = almond joy!) Waffle cones are only $1. My husband and I have discovered our new favorite spot for a cold dessert on a warm day! Ginger's Gelato offers rotating flavors of all-natural gelato including dairy-free sorbet options for the lactose intolerant. I must confess to visiting twice in one week because the first visit was so impressive. So far, my favorite flavors are Honey Lavender and Banana. The unique natural flavors shine through wonderfully and the texture is satisfyingly smooth. The homemade waffle cone pieces included with each scoop is the perfect pairing for this sweet treat. Prices are very reasonable, especially considering everything is made in house and you can add as many as four flavors into one bowl (perfect for sharing!). The space is adorable with plenty of seating options, including a kid's table and some outdoor seating. They even have family-friendly board games and a small selection of European goodies available to purchase. I also noticed the use of compostable bowls, way to be green! It wasn't terrible, but I am not excited to go back or want to recommend this place. I have tried several gelato places and this place is no where near being called gelato. It felt like a lame ice cream place. First I feel like there wasn't any flavors I was interested in trying or wanting to get. I got the lemon blueberry and the raspberry. Both my son and I did not like the lemon blueberry. I didn't like eating all the blueberry skins and it wasn't flavorful at all. The raspberry tasted artificial. The atmosphere didn't feel like a gelateria, it felt like a coffee shop that also did gelato on the side. Pretty spacious shop. I feel the customer service was a bit wonky. My son had sampled one of their flavors and then they said we could keep that scoop to use for our gelato. They didn't even ask if we needed a second scoop but I guess I could have asked. But why would you have your customer use their sample scoop again?? Too expensive for what you get. I would rather just go to Safeway and save money for more flavor. Located in an almost deserted shopping plaza. I thought I was in the wrong area when the GPS told me to turn into the plaza. Kinda tucked away within the other storefronts. read more

You wouldn't know where she packs it, but she loves decadent things like creme brulee and canoli's, but likes lighter fare like gelato. Until we stumbled upon this place, she almost gave up hope on a good gelato shop. GELATO: I'll take my wife's word for it that this shop has good gelato. I've always gravitated towards the fruit flavors than the chocolate based ones, so I've tried the lemon, raspberry, and coconut. I'm forgetting off the top of my head, but there's this combination of 3 that they say is their best seller (the aforementioned ones might be it). It also comes with a nice little wafer cookie as well, which has a nice aroma and semi-sweet (not like a cake cone) taste. The lemon is by far the best. Just the right amount of tartness and sweetness. We both get this one. ATMOSPHERE: Tastefully done, always immaculately clean as any shop should be. Sometimes its a little chilly, so bring a coat or a light jacket. PARKING: Plentiful. The lot that the shop sits in is huge. RETURN VISIT? Definitely. Though the problem has always been for us is that we typically like to eat dessert later than the shop is open. They do sell pints so that might be an option, but we prefer to eat there. read more

I have mixed feelings about the gelato as I tried many different samples and didn't like many. The almond was too sweet. The lavender honey tasted a bit like what my bathroom cleanser might taste if I ate it. I finally settled for what I thought was the best one, hazelnut. Without sampling, I also had the pistacio which was surprisingly bitter. Luckily, I paired it with the hazelnut to take the edge off the bitterness. Only been in this plaza once before for Ice Monster at a friend's recommendation, and couldn't even finish the dessert. I wish I knew Ginger's Gelato was like 4 stores down! Found this place on a reallllyyy hot day after wine tasting ~2 miles away at Shadowbrook and this place really hit the spot. Not only was it cold inside (praise the AC gods) but the staff was so nice welcoming us when we got inside. She was kind enough to help everyone get all the samples they wanted (we were a party of 8) and get us all our ice cream very quick! I got 2 scoops of mango, and it was absolutely delicious! I saw in some other reviews that there was lemon, which sadly wasn't available at the time, so I will definitely be back to get some of that! I tried my friend's tiramisu which was also pretty good, the flavor is a little subtle but I personally liked that. It didn't feel too overpowering. The grapefruit was pretty good as well, but it does have a little bit of a bitter aftertaste just like the real deal. A great experience! read more

I went here from a referral from a Yelp friend. Amy S. Had said the cookies are really good here. I love Gelato, but I love cookies even more. The owner was very helpful and super nice. She had told me that the cookies are delivered from the South-bay at another bakery. She explained to me that they make their own Gelato in house. I went with a S'mores type of cookie and 2 orders of their Beignet type of cookies filled with Hazelnut chocolate cream and a White chocolate filled pastry. They were really good and bite sized so it didn't feel like you were eating a regular sized Beignet. The Cookie on the other was super moist and the Marshmallow with the Chocolate and Graham cracker tied the whole thing together. The store is a little small but quaint. I might stop by another time to grab an espresso and maybe a Hazelnut Chocolate gelato. read more

Erin and her staff are very friendly; I stopped in after today after noticing this place next to the post office yesterday. My co-worker and I had a delicious cold dessert after lunch and I'll def be back. I mixed hazelnut and tiramisu flavors and my friend had strawberry in their medium cup. I topped mine with a s'mores cookie and it was outstanding. The total was 2 mediums (which are good size) and a big cookie was $14. They open at 8:30 with coffee (not just gelato!) so come in early! Variety of flavors and I'm in love with this spot. It was a hot day and stopped by for some gelato today with the boyfriend. I got to sample the sweet cream and double chocolate cookies and cream. I like gelato for intensity of flavor and density, and while this did not match what I have had at Berthillon on the Île de la Cité, two of the six flavors I tried were excellent. The most intense flavors were, in my opinion, the dark chocolate and the POG (not sure about the other flavors in it, perhaps pineapple and orange, but it definitely had guava and good intensity and density.) The mango coconut was creamy and a bit sweet, but I would have liked a more pronounced coconut flavor and more denseness. I would not have known it had any coconut in it, as I could not detect it by flavor, odor, or texture, but it was still delicious. I did not see cones, but had read that they were available, so I asked, and the worker went in the back to get some. (I like to eat one-handed, so I can read my Joel Dicker mystery in French on my phone at the same time and was pleased with the large scoops.) My companion enjoyed a cup of the strawberry and cream, the blood orange, the dark chocolate, and the sample of lavender and honey. We were there on a 100-degree Sunday afternoon and no one was there! Service was friendly, patient and efficient, meriting a good tip. The young man even volunteered that we could have three samples each, although only my companion took advantage of that perk. Gelato is not ice cream. It's more dense with less air whipped into it during production and the flavors are much more intense. Gelato in Italy is incredibly good but good gelato is hard to find in the U.S., mainly because the main ingredient - raw milk, is not available here like it is in all of Europe. The pasteurization robs something from the milk and the domestic gelato suffers a bit because of it. Ginger's Gelato is about as good as it gets in the U.S. They've only been open less than 2 months but I hope it survives. They don't have that many flavors but what they have is very good. I have a favorite - Fruitti di Bosco (mixed berries) that is a standard flavor all over Italy. After years of seeking it out, I discovered on our first visit that they were making it that night. I had to settle for a cup of 4 other flavors and they were all good but I really yearned for the Fruitti di Bosco. So, we went back the next day and, sure enough, it was there. It was excellent - very intense berry flavor and the texture was correct. We'll be back for more. It's too bad they are so far away from us - about a 25 minute drive for us! It's nicely decorated with tables and chairs and the tables are stocked with board games for kids to keep them occupied. There is a small/low table for the kids.
