Had to seat myself and sat for 5 minutes before greeted. Waited an additional 5 minutes just for a drink order and gave up after 10 minutes of no one taking an order. If you're not staffed accordingly close down for lunch until your trainees can write down an order. You are basically paying trainees to refill teas. We hadn't been here in a few years and I was eagerly looking forward to the visit as we now live in the area. The lot was only 1/2 full for a Saturday lunch. Service problems started at the door. No hostess to seat us or the people in front and behind. Then once seated, no server for quite some time. Never filled drinks, food took nearly 30 mins to get, no refills, starting to get real parched. The food did finally arrive and it was tasty. Then it took forever to get a to-go box, then check... For a $40 lunch, better service is an expectation. Disappointing, but I am sure we will try again as the food was above average and several good choices to choose. read more

This place surprised us with how tasty everything was. The deep fried mushrooms are a must try. If you like chicken fried steak this is a must try item on the menu. Have driven past O'Briens for years saying we need to try it. Today we did and regret waiting. The atmosphere is fun and homey. The waitress, Tracy was the sweetest person, went above and beyond. Pleasant and interesting. The owner himself was cooking today and have to applaud him. Had the German plate and it was excellent, sauerkraut was perfect, potatoes true O'Brien potatoes. Pleasantly surprised at this place. I remember when the building was a gas station back on the day. Arrived for early dinner (5pm) we were the only table of patrons so we had excellent service. I had the salmon over zucchini and leeks and a glass of house cab (the wine tasted like an old bottle that had been left out unopened) . The salmon dish was very good. My father had the chicken fried steak and he loved it. Next time we will try the steaks (which are extremely HIGH priced! Overall a good experience. Southern Hospitality ... We stopped by here for lunch to meet with some family and was surprised to find this hidden gem in the middle of nowhere. The wait staff was super friendly and efficient. Actually she had just stopped by on her day off and it got busy so she decided to help out by staying and waitressing. We had the chicken and dumpling, which was okay. A little bland for me but it didn't taste bad. However the chicken fried chicken was out of this world ... the best i have ever had hands down. I mentioned this to the waitress and she said she was actually a chef at another small dinner and she quit her job there to waitress her so that she could learn from the chef. Amazing spot!!! Food was phenomenal and the service was outstanding! Jennifer was amazing and took great care of us. Atmosphere is relaxed, people are great and we had conversations with other folks grabbing dinner as well as the owner to stopped by to say hi to us because he hadn't "seen us in here before." I'm a bit peeved that I consulted their website to confirm their lunch hours. After driving just over 45 minutes to have lunch starting at 11am, I discovered a note on their front door that they weren't going to open during the lunch hours on their website. Let start out by saying dinner for 3 was $130 before the tip. I got the halibut with vegetables and the halibut was great but I'm not sure what the veg were. My husband ordered cowboy ribeye cooked medium but it was too rare and and alot of fat. My son ordered 16 oz ribeye cooked rare and spinach. Both steaks had too much fat on them and the spinach was overcooked because it has a chemical taste to it. First time trying O'Briens, and we'll definitely be coming back. I've had some great steaks in my life, but this tenderloin was one of the best ever. Better than Ruth's Chris and definitely better than Saltgrass. My husband had one of their specials--red fish topped with shrimp and crawfish with a Creole rice & okra on the side. I live two miles from this place. It was a Friday afternoon at 5:15pm. It had been open 15 minutes. The parking lot had five cars. Inside I saw four customers and five staff members. The place was empty. We were greeted by the hostess who asked, "How many?". I replied, "Five." My wife's parents are visiting from North Carolina and of course I had my a Service Dog with me in his service dog vest. BEST DOG EVER! DESERT STORM VETERAN! The hostess looked at my service dog then back at me, then back at my service dog, then back at me, then back at my service dog, then asked me if I had reservations. I said no. The hostess stammered again and acted very uncomfortable the. Said there would be a wait. Then she said we would have to wait until 5:30pm. I said that would be fine. Then she said she wouldn't be able to seat us until 7:00pm. They have never required reservations. Their website doesn't say reservations required. Their billboard outside doesn't say reservations required. I was denied service because of my service dog. It was extremely embarrassing for me in front of my family. This restaurant used to be a well kept secret among the residents of Fair Oaks and Boerne, but sadly it has lost its desire to make patrons feel welcome and the "quaintness" has definitely disappeared in the last few years. My party had reservations for 7 people for 7:00. Reservations were required because the Rick Cavendar Band was playing..........inside........I asked the person at the front check in why the band wasn't playing outside and she said they don't have enough wait staff to serve people inside AND outside. Hmmmm...they knew they were going to have a band, but they didn't have enough people working to serve inside and outside? Sounds like a very poor management decision. Trying to have a conversation with my guests was out of the question.......a band indoors in October when you have a perfectly good outdoor patio is another BAD management decision. The inside seating area was packed as well as the bar. Our waitress took drink orders----$11 for a martini???? Really???? In Bergheim, Texas???? She came back for our food order and told each one of us that it would be an hour before our food would be ready. She also inquired if we wanted appetizers.....a couple of people in my party asked if the appetizers would be ready BEFORE our meal...no, she could not guarantee it. WHAT kind of service is that????? We looked around at all the other tables and there was not ONE table that had food on it. Very odd. Our food did arrive ONE hour later. The appetizer of jalepeno poppers arrived AFTER our food.......what a crazy way to run a restaurant!!!!! I ordered the filet with twice baked potato. The filet had NO flavor although it was cooked to my specifications and the potato tasted like it had been baked MORE than twice.....very dry and hard. The cost was $29.99......really..........in Bergheim, TX?????? Sadly, others in our group had similar thoughts on the quality of the food they ordered. Our consensus was that this restaurant is in dire need of someone who knows how to run a restaurant business. And the cook needs to be fired!!!! I have marked O'Briens off my list of places to eat, especially if they are no longer opening the patio for food service. If you want to spend this much money for a family owned restaurant, go to one of the quaint places on Main Street in Boerne. read more

This place gets two stars solely based on the food. Although a little pricey, it was all excellent. The rest of the experience was pretty bad. First, they messed up our reservations. Second, since they messed up our reservations they gave us a deadline to be done with dinner, because "this table is reserved at 8:30". The food took quite a while to come out, so at 8:25 we had the poor 16-year old hostess at our table telling us we had to leave as we scarfed down the last of our entrees while I was simultaneously turning over my credit card. It wasn't exactly the birthday dinner I had in mind for my mother-in-law. We may eat here again, but only if we can get it to go. At least nobody can chase us out of our living room. read more

The food at O'Brien's is always great... unfortunately the service can be a little on the slow side at best. The wine list isn't super extensive, but its decent, so we asked to start off with a bottle and a couple of cocktails... About 20-25 minutes later we received them. No big deal, we were't in a hurry. We did start to get a little frustrated when it took another almost 30 minutes to get our soups and appetizers. The seafood gumbo was incredible.. definitely worth ordering! My mom and I each tried the specials of the night.. she got the crusted salmon and I did the portabello stuffed chicken. Both were SO good! My husband ordered the tilapia and shrimp with a side of mac and cheese.. which he devoured, so I'm assuming it was good. My dad had the chicken and dumplings, which I managed to get a bite of.. it was pretty good (though there wasn't exactly "dumplings".. more like one huge dumpling in the middle of the bowl, but it was fine). We also ordered a couple of desserts... the brownie and the gooey vanilla... the gooey vanilla was delicioussss, but unfortunately the bottom was burnt. When we mentioned this to our server he was kind enough to remove it from our bill and even brought us another one to try (still burnt, but we appreciated the effort). O'Brien's is consistently good.. which keeps us coming back.. just don't make the drive out there if you're in a hurry, be prepared for a leisurely meal. read more

Went O'Briens last week to listen to Rick Cavender Band. Food was average at best. The waitress was good but had no control over the kitchen. She told us it would take some time to get the food because of the crowd. It took 1 hour and 10 minutes to get our food. That is totally unacceptable under ANY condition. Very good food, decent prices and nice atmosphere. I had a Ribeye, I would not consider high end quality but it was what I expected and cooked perfectly. My wife ordered the stuffed flounder special. She thought the crab stuffing may have been going bad so she returned the plate. They cooked her just the flounder fillet and it was excellent. Good salad, freshly prepared salad dressings, fried calamari was excellent. good wine selection and they do not skimp on the portions (food or wine!) Perfect example of a locals restaurant. Excellent service, very Texas inside. The fish is always fresh. The Chicken/Shrimp artichoke dinner is wonderful. During the week, most bottles of wine at 20.00. We love it every time. MIL swears they serve the best ribeye in the area. Prices are normal when compared to tourist traps. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. After a bad experience a year ago, we thought maybe they just had a bad night so We decided to give them a second chance. What a mistake.Yuck. We were immediately greeted with a strong smell of mold in the foyer- should have served as a warning to us. The waitress needs to find another line of work, this gig isn't for her. She plopped things silently down on the table without so much as a smile. Terrible service. We waited 40 minutes for our food to show up. The disappointment got much worse when the food actually DID show up. Like I said, yuck. The chicken fried chicken was completely bland, soggy on one side, no seasoning at all on that or the spinach. Not even salt or pepper. The so- called "German" chicken and dumplings- forget it. Down right gross. We lived in Germany for 2 years and never encountered anything close to that. It had such a weird taste, sauce from a can kind of taste, and some strange flavor that has no business in that dish. We left almost all of it on our plates. And to top it off, WAY over priced . $20 for terrible plates of food! How is this place possibly still in business? Don't go, don't go! UPDATE: after being doubled over half the night , this food made a projectile exit from my body. I haven't puked in years. Like I said, we should've walked out when we smelled the mold. read more

We chose to have Thanksgiving lunch at OBrien's Restaurant on Hwy 46 in the Hill Country to escape the crowds in San Antonio. It took about 30 minutes to drive out there. It was misty and overcast, and a welcome adventure. The staff was very friendly. The restaurant is decorated with Texas flavor and is very inviting. The Thanksgiving plate had turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and cranberry sauce. I opted to order the mixed plate which also had ham. We were served warm rolls while we waited. Our meal included pumpkin pie topped with whipped cream. I was pleasantly surprised they weren't crowded at all.
