You get off Main a couple blocks and things aren't so busy. We walked in right about noon and Saturday and got a seat right away. I got the Mumbo Jumbo burger onion rings. The pic doesn't do the burger justice. Two 1/3lb patties, cheese and some nice thick cut bacon! One look and you know these aren't premade patties, someone formed this bad boys up right back there in the kitchen! Here's the thing though, if you want a monster of a sandwich go with the buffalo chicken sandwich. My son got that and I swear it came with 3 chicken breasts on it! It was so big I thought they made a mistake! Wife got the shrimp sandwich and liked it so much I didn't get a single bite. At a nearby antiques mall we asked for a lunch recommendation. Hungry Horse was suggested by all 3 we asked. We found it easily, good parking onsite and nearby. The menu is on the wall and ordering at the counter. There are yummy looking pies in the case. We were happy to see liver and onions with 3 sides. It also came with an incredibly tasty muffin, which we were told was a type of bran muffin. The liver was very thinly sliced and nicely grilled. Sides were generous. We got drinks and my unsweet tea was nicely brewed, which in Texas is expected. Counter staff was friendly and service was quick. The environs are in serious need of an upgrade, which I doubt will happen to keep the prices low. As it is our shared meal and two drinks was about $25. We were very pleased with our meal, the restrooms were clean and easy access, and overall other than extremely dated decor this eatery is a Boerne classic! read more

Walked in around 5 pm on a Sunday, could already smell how delicious the food was going to taste. The inside is nice and spacious, got a seat right away ;they have tables and booths .The menu is posted outside and inside which has so many options for everyone.I got the chicken Fried steak with mashed potatoes and corn , and my Husband got a pork chop plate with Mac and cheese,broccoli and mashed potatoes. I really like that they give you an option from how many chicken fried chickens I wanted from 1or 2 (I got 2) ,and my husband option for the pork chops were 1,2 or 3 .(he only got 2) Everything was delicious. Loved it..... I met with my family that I hadn't seen in over 30 years here halfway between the two of us. Definitely needed my GPS. I would not have been able to find it off the main street. It's nothing fancy in appearance, but it was clean and the staff was nice. We did in line to order. It has that old time, family appeal kind of restaurant. I don't know how else to explain this other than it's food that your southern grandma would make for you. It had all the flavor and all the heart cooked right into it. It's self serve drinks and silverware, etc. I love that they have different size portions of meals. There are so many things to choose from. I normally take a million photos. I apologize because I was so into my visit that I didn't get any except photos of my family. I can tell you we started with fried mushrooms and they were incredible. They were hot and battered perfectly. Add Ranch and I was in heaven. They served it with gravy also-which is a must. Do you ever look back at your visit and wish you had eaten more of something? That's me with the mushrooms, but I was trying to be lady like so I only ate a few. I got chopped beef sirloin that was smothered in onions and brown gravy & fried okra and they serve it with this muffin like roll. It was all so good. The quality of the meat was great and that deep brown gravy compliments the entire dish....grilled onions....oh man...take me back! Let me just tell you my little southern heart was in heaven. Their onion rings are amazing also. The chicken fried steak was great. I mean....i had to take bites of my son's plate also. I don't see how you could go wrong here. I love that you go grab your food and go sit yourself down. This place stayed hopping but they were on their game and had the food out so tables were turning quickly. I'm a sucker for a good country diner, and Bernie delivered. I had a little time to kill before meeting a customer and spotted this place nearby. If you're coming during peak hours, parking can be tight since the lot is small, but I had no trouble finding street parking. You order at the counter, and the plates come in three sizes. I went with the regular--and trust me, the portion was massive. My plate: liver & onions, mac & cheese, carrots, and fried okra, plus a sweet muffin. The liver & onions were easily some of the best I've had--super tender and packed with flavor. The mac & cheese and fried okra were both well seasoned and spot-on. The carrots were the only thing that didn't really stand out. Friendly service even with a busy dining room, hearty portions, and classic country cooking done right. I've been here 3 times and I enjoy it. The food is pricey with the smallest portion being almost $15 but it's a good size. This last visit I got the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and macaroni. All of mine was good. My friend got chicken fried steak with fries and her fries did not have any seasoning. They are more like sliced potatoes, which is good, but there was no seasoning on them at all. The cashier was nice and friendly but just him. Y'all.... Where to begin? The chicken fried steak appears to be of the frozen variety, covered in a shiny cream glaze advertised as "gravy." The new potatoes and pintos are taste less. The only glimmer of positivity is the muffin \ but who eats a muffin with dinner? Please avoid this place. A slab of lunch meat between two slices of bread in a hotel room is a better meal than this. I've been coming to Hungry Horse for about 8 years or so. I like it just fine if you are in the mood for some comfort food. Portions are good and getting the large portion may mean you can share with partner. Chicken fried steak is good, mashed potatoes are the staple of my choice. The other day my husband and I were there and as usual, it was busy. The staff is super friendly! The food comes out in the expected amount of time to make you feel like it was made just for you, but not from scratch, lol. I was disappointed in the mac n'cheese. It was extremely bland. And the corn was definitely from a can, not a bit of salt or butter. We shared a chopped sirloin and it was good. On other visits I can say I have enjoyed the chicken tender salad and fried catfish but really the chicken fried steak or chicken are my GO TO choices. I will say, if the owner is reading this...I know you are super busy, but your restaurant needs a good cleaning and refresh. It's kinda worn out. The chairs aren't comfortable. The booths need to be scrubbed, even the walls adjoining to the booths are dirty. Maybe your bussers clean the table tops great after each use, but the surrounding area is kinda gross. I am not saying I won't be back, or even that people shouldn't give it a try, just setting expectations and hoping that the owners make some time to get back to quality on every plate and at every table. read more

The Hungry Horse is unapologetically non-welcoming. With high ceilings, bare walls, and hard surface-everything, the acoustics are unpleasant. The center of the floor has 4-top, diner-style tables and chairs. If you fancy a booth you may want to bring a stadium cushion with you as the booth benches are hard wood and not ergonomic. The booth tables have varnish bubbling up and peeling off. Everything screams, "eat and get out; you're not meant to tarry." You stand at the counter looking at a board high up on the wall to order your food. A normal sized menu is also located at the counter. Place your order, pay, get your fountain drink, sit down at your table, and wait for your name to be called so that you can get up, fetch your meal and return to your table. I took note of all the cues and was ready to walk out but my wife insisted we place an order. If this review had been written on my experience alone, it would have been much lower, but as it was, I had my daughter and wife in tow and they made out better than did I. I was in a weird mood, so I suppose in a way I did it to myself. In general, when restaurants put a concoction like meatloaf on the menu, it's a means to grind up leftover proteins on their last leg in a last-ditch effort to make some money off them. I suppose I romanticized a bit since it felt like a mom and pop establishment, that there may be a phenomenal family meatloaf recipe that would produce something delicious. What I was given was bland and did not taste like meatloaf. It tasted like they had simply opened a package of ground beef, cooked it and called it meatloaf. The onion rings were cold, not crisp and laden with grease. The fried okra was of the same quality that you buy out of the freezer section at your local supermarket. The boiled potatoes were, well, boiled potatoes. My wife ordered a classic bacon cheeseburger and tater tots. The bacon was thickly sliced. My daughter ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich and "circle fries." Both of them enjoyed the sandwiches. The "circle fries" were as unappealing as the ones I reviewed for gristmill except that they seemed to be uniformly sliced. However, they somehow managed to fry them enough to taste burnt while at the same time leaving them flaccid without any crispness at all; and no seasoning. The meal wasn't cheap coming in at over $60 for the three of us. The value here does not come from the quality of the food but rather the quantity. The portions are huge. read more
