The sushi is one of our favorite things on the menu, however, we were disappointed that they no longer have a happy hour. In the past we were able to enjoy a nice sushi with wine at half price. Our usual is the shrimp tempura and the chicken teriyaki, both are like no other. We've tried them at other places but find no competition. I had the tonkatsu (pork cutlet) and WooGuji Galbitang (cabbage and rib stew). Your first question is, how'd you eat both? I didn't. I shared. If I ate both, I'd probably be feeling not so well. So at least you know the portion sizes are good. If you're not hungry, good luck finishing an entree. Korean meals come with side dishes so you will always have variety :) The tonkatsu was probably the best I've had here in Austin. If you're not a tonkatsu master, you won't know what the perfect balance of meat, batter, and crispness is. Having said that, the one at odaku was right on the spot. The beef and cabbage stew will also satisfy your crave for a nice, hot soup that you've been longing for on a rainy and cold day. There's enough parking and seating, so that's always a plus (I came with a group of 7). This place can also be a hit or a miss. The first time I came, I don't find the experience nor taste memorable. I really wish I can give them five stars. Their food is superb. However, I have to question their cleanliness and being compliant with city ordinance. I went there couple of weeks ago, they gave me one of the booth seat. There was another party right behind me and I felt very uncomfortable. Also, my table was dusty and had hairs. I asked them to clean it again and they weren't very happy with it. I am not sure if they sanitize tables. This place is fantastic. Very friendly and attentive staff and very delicious food. All the japanese dishes I've tried here are great but lately I've been favoring the Dolsot Bibimbap. The side dishes are each so yummy and they offer you extras if you want. The kimchi here is notably excellent too! My spouse always gets the japanese curry and has no complaints. The seafood pancake was really good. I got the yookgaejang, which is a spicy stew with beef and various vegetables. I found it very odd how they added sliced mushrooms. They were really out of place and I wondered why they were added because they are not a usual ingredient in the dish. It was also missing gosari, which is one of the main components of the soup. My friend got sunji, which has chunks of solid blood in it. I tried some and it had the consistency of tofu but I wasn't into it. The soups for my dish and my friend's were hardly distinguishable. They also were not spicy. My friend's brother got seafood ramen which I think was literally an instant ramen with vegetables and some seafood added to make it look more legit/authentic. I was looking forward to this place because my roommate raved about it so much but it was a letdown for me. Perhaps next time I'll try something else. read more

This is one of those fence-walking reviews for me. I went to Odaku a few times when I worked nearby, and I enjoyed it much more then than I did for lunch on Friday. Here's m'problem... the tempura shrimp roll I ordered should have included warm, freshly-cooked tempura shrimp, right? It did in recent years, but not on Friday. Friday's roll included cold, hard tempura shrimp. I distinctly got the impression they cooked the tempura shrimp at 10:30am, and then stuck it in the fridge, only to be removed from the fridge when ordered. Too bad the sushi chef forgot to nuke it. But, the rest of the roll was fine. Tasty, fresh tuna with spicy sauce atop, and they remembered to exclude the evil allergy-inducing avocado from my roll, so they get that fourth star. I also got a small salad and miso soup for free, so that's a definite plus. Oh, and their iced tea is kick-ass. Okay, Odaku, I'll assume you had an off day and will award you four stars instead of my previously-considered three. You're lucky I'm in a good mood today. But, rest assured if, during my next trip, I get tempura shrimp that only an Eskimo could love, the whip will come down on your sushi douchey ass. read more

Odaku Sushi is one of those underdog sushi places hidden away in plain sight. THE SKINNY: Odaku does a lot of things well, but I felt that the Korean dishes (Bibimbap, Bulgogi, Kimchi, etc) were far better than the Japanese dishes. So, for a place with "Sushi" in the title, I've always felt this place was selling itself a little short. Overall, the ambience is great but the service is not. The restaurant is kept relatively clean by the staff, but is often eclipsed by the neglectful service. Some other reviews mention having to wait 10 minutes for water - this is not a joke. Upon entering, you're met with the steamy smell of rice and clean sushi. The decorations are appropriate, though sometimes the music is not. I believe the last time I went, they were playing some funky 90s boy-band mash-up CD. We thought it was hilarious, so we didn't mind. Sometimes, if the sushi chefs are feeling particularly jaunty, they will sing along with some JPop goodness. This always makes it worth the visit, as the place can become uncomfortably quiet (if you're like me and not exactly the social type). THE FOODENING: The portions at Odaku are definitely generous, and you often will get Miso Soup to precede meals. It's hit or miss; sometimes it is a little grainy and other times it is fresh with pretty decent tofu. The Bento Boxes are IMPRESSIVE, giving you TONS of food, and you don't feel like your wallet was violated after dinner. Also, some of their lunch specials are a STEAL. Odaku is, however, on the middle to upper-middle price-range for Sushi. The sushi rolls are pretty decent though, if not a little overpriced, and some can be easily oversauced. I was not a fan of the Shashimi, as the whole of it was a bit dry and quickly fell apart after (only slightly clumsily) taking it between my chopsticks. If I'm in the area, Odaku is always on my list of possibilities. It should be on yours too! read more

I've eaten sushi at the famed Nobu in New York and virtually every sushi place in Boston, but I always look back on where my love of sushi was cultivated and remains unrivaled. Odaku is famous for their rice. I've heard it from Citysearch, the Austin Chronicle, and on a visit, I've even heard a customer belt out his infatuation for Odaku's sushi rice. You see, Odaku's success lies in their customer loyalty. On one occasion, I witnessed a woman from San Marcos, Texas (45 min. away if you're speeding massively) pick up an order from Odaku at her sick husband's request. Because I'm a regular (or was when I lived in Austin), they serve me free ice cream while I'm waiting for my order (they have mochi in all flavors as well as Japanese ice cream in red bean, green tea, cappaccino, etc. garnished with dates, almond slivers, or a pirouette stick depending on what flavor you order). The sushi here is incredibly fresh. I've seen the head chef (an adorable old man) fillet and prep the fresh fish himself. The ginger dressing for the house salad is a modern marvel...they blend together fresh vegetables and ginger. It's not too salty, not too sweet, has minimal calories, and tastes of perfection. I've never tasted ginger dressing as good as Odaku's. The udon, ton katsu, and other Japanese dishes are delicious as well. Also, the miso soup is painstakingly prepared from real miso, kelp, tofu, and green onion. The result is an authentic, flavorful soup with less than 50 calories a bowl. I could rant and rave about Odaku until I developed carpal tunnel syndrome but it must end at this: Odaku was and will always be the pinnacle of my extensive sushi adventures. I would give it 10 stars if I could. read more

Hidden in a smallish shopping center off of Palmer lane, a shopping center I frequented when I was in high school, actually ( although there was nothing as cool as Odaku then!) and with a blandish outside view...lies a treasure. First of all its beautiful, the spacious decor and lovely decorations and friendly wait staff make it an experience worth driving in for. Tons of fresh, inexpensive sushi, balgagi, lunch specials to go, sushi happy hours ( 20 percent off sushi), a VIP bonus card for frequent buys, and low carb berry juice. Need I say more? I sometimes practice my chop stick skills by eating individual grains of rice. That has nothing to do with my review...I just felt like sharing. So, onto said review. This was my first time at Odaku. I drive by it almost daily, but never bothered to check it out. With a couple buddies, I decided to finally give it a try. One of my friends, let's call him Mike (that's actually his name), has been a fan for some time. I went with a hankering for sushi, but upon perusing the menu, decided on Spicy squid (something) bibimbap. Eh...it was served in one of those sizzling bowls, so the rice in contact was dry, over cooked, crunchy, and not particularly palatable. The squid itself was only OK. I was a little saddened by this. My friend "Mike" had the Kastu don, which I found myself coveting. My other bud, "Paul" had the bulgogi...which I also found myself envying. It happens on occasion, that I order incorrectly. Ces't la vie! The staff was friendly and the menu was quite extensive. The skinny? Will I be back? Sure, but next time, I'll opt for the sushi or Katsu don. They had some great bento specials that I'd like to sample as well. OK Odaku...you'll get another shot! read more

Came on a Friday night with a reservation-- and we were seated in the traditional booths (where you take off your shoes & sit on a platform where your feet hang below). It's pretty unique if you've never done that before. Ambiance is casual but nice & not too loud, even though the place was full. Parking- huge lot but pretty busy on a Friday night. Food: Hoedoepbap-- it's like a chirashi salad-- small mound of sliced raw fish & lots of fresh veggies (spring mix, cabbage, etc). Pair it with the spicy pepper sauce & you're in for a healthy, delicious meal. Comes in a GIGANTIC bowl. Fish & veggies were fresh. $17 Pork Katsu Bento-- they know how to fry their Katsu b/c it was crispy & delicious. $18 is pretty steep for a bento box, but it came with a sushi roll on the side, so not too bad. Katsu, rice, miso soup, veggie tempura, and a Rainbow roll. Service: Friendly, no complaints. I would come back again-- but next time, I'll come for the more traditional Korean food since one of my friend says this is her favorite Korean place in Austin. read more

I just had lunch here with two friends from work. I ordered some sushi, after carefully reviewing what each type of roll had on it. They kindly offered to replace my raw salmon with smoked salmon, when I asked about the raw issue. However, I just didn't find the roll to my liking. I ended up giving it away. My friends ordered extra meals to take home, but the waiter didn't pack anything to go. Instead, he brought out everything and piled it in front of us. Then, he walked away before we had time to ask for him to pack it for travel. Eventually, a waitress came to assist. She packed up the food and expedited our departure. Came here because I was told that they had homemade tofu. My friend and I didn't find anything that we really wanted. So we went with the tofu soup. Clean soup. Simple veggies in there. A very simple just like home tasting soup. Nice texture to the tofu - it was soft but held together enough into some crumples. Spicy bulgogi was kind of oily. Simply tasted like small stripes of beef cooked with some oily spicy sauce. I wouldn't get it again. I usually expect a little heat and sweetness. Just heat from this one. We ordered some sushi - salmon, escolar, and tuna. Surprisingly good size piece of fish. I wish the rice had a little more rice vinegar taste to it, but it held together well. We do NOT recommend the sweet shrimp. That was the only piece that didn't taste very fresh. As other reviews mentioned - they are owned by Koreans. Nice people. Good to see mainly asian people eating here - but it was kind of empty for a Friday night. I'll probably come by again sometime. Not really cheap. I did not have sushi here. My husband had sushi for lunch one day here and came home excited that they actually have tonkatsu (Japanese-style breaded and fried pork). Needless to say, I had to try it out as our town has a distinct lacking of quality tonkatsu. Yes, I've had Kome's, but I was disappointed that it wasn't quite right. Well, imagine my shock that this place does it right. You get a bowl of miso soup, then a ginormous piece of fried pork. Here's where they get it right: the pork is served on a metal rack on top of the plate, sliced in long thing strips. This keeps it from sitting in oil, makes it easy to pick up with chopsticks, and is how it should be served. The pork was perfect. They even served some shredded cabbage with it (how it should be), which was unfortunately drenched in a dressing. One of the things I love about Odaku is since this place seems to be all about Korean food, they serve several small dishes of pickled cucumber, potato, fish cake, and something else I was unsure of. I found them all tasty and an exciting tease to the actual Korean food they serve. I really can't wait to come back. If you too are a tonkatsu fan, one of the REALLY exciting offerings is katsu curry. Never seen it here, only in Japan, and something I am nervous, but excited to try here. Waitress was really nice, if surprised that I didn't need a fork. I'd say my only complaint was that my hot tea cup was a little dirty. read more

Suddenly craving a shrimp tempura roll, I popped in here on my way home from work yesterday. I picked up a crunchy California roll along with the aforementioned tempura. The Cali roll was my favorite-fresh and yummy crab, moist fluffy rice and a crunchy coating on the outside. Delicious! The tempura was quite good also. I ordered the miso soup as an appetizer and it was not the best I've ever had but it was satisfying. I went there for lunch and had Kimchi Udon and some sushi. Sushi taste the same whenever you go but I don't know about giving Odaku 4 or 5 stars... I have had sushi since I was very young, the best sushi is not judge by taste and the freshness but the fish cutting technique, the rice, and how the shape of the fish should be lying on top of the rice... and yes, I am very that religious about sushi. So meat of the sushi that I ordered was cut in an almost rectangular shape, the rice was not packed tighty and when i try to use my chopsticks to hold it, it fell apart immediately. Hence, to me, it was not that great. As for my Udon, it was packed with all kinds of seafood goodies. I like it but it wasn't the best Kimchi soup I have tasted... Overall, Odaku is a good place for lunch and maybe you can try their fancy rolls, they look pretty cute at other tables. read more

Odaku is good stuff. They're pretty close at work, so when I'm feeling "sushi plus cooked food," I always hit them up for lunch. Their bento boxes are an amazing amount of food for an amazing price, so I usually go that route. They have no problem customizing my order, the staff is polite and friendly, and their food tasty. Everyone I've taken here (which, given that I'm a manager and go with employees, is a good number of people) adores it and promises to be repeat customers. The bento boxes are also very reasonably priced. For soup, salad, a roll, chicken teriyaki, and tempura, you walk out just over $10. Great! read more

Who would have expected that a sushi restaurant this great would be in an HEB shopping center? The atmosphere is fantastic, and the staff is so friendly...I have only been there a few times but they make me feel like a regular. They greet every customer that enters and thanks everyone when they leave. The sashimi and sushi rolls are top notch, and the Odaku udon is a personal favorite. I ordered take out from here on Saturday night and my experience was pretty decent. I called and there is no website, just outdated pictures of the menu which I found frustrating. I asked for a sushi/sashimi combo and was put through 2 different people just to place my order. I didn't know if it was a language barrier or they couldn't hear me.. it was like what I was asking for that was on their menu pictures wasn't offered anymore but that wasn't said. I was getting more annoyed so in a rush just to complete the order I flubbed what I wanted since I don't order sushi a lot and asked for a sashimi combo. No name was asked, so I guess they just go by looking at your phone number although I wasn't asked for any identification of my order upon pick up (more on that later). After hanging up I realized my mistake and immediately called back to correct the order. I spoke with a woman who was a little easier to speak with. I told her the mistake and then while I'm on the phone my boyfriend wants to place an order (ugh, he said he wasn't hungry earlier). So I had to just cancel the previous order and make a new one. No problem she says. It would be ready in 20 mins. We get there in 20 mins and the sushi is all packed up sitting on the bench. A young gentleman (no name) grabs my food and it's $42.35 for a dragon roll, a Cali roll and the regular sushi combo. (I thought this was a bit too expensive but I'm starving and don't care at this point is 8:30pm at this point. The guy as I'm handing the card to him starts to shame me by stating that they had made the sashimi order and next time to call to cancel and I'm like "Are you kidding?" I would've explained how the whole experience of just ordering takeout has been a 30 minute debacle but I didn't care anymore. I'm already done with this place and haven't even eaten their food yet. So I slap on my "oops silly me" smile and apologize. (For what??! Why do we do this ladies? Apologize for everything when it's not our fault?) Now for the food: I was actually alright with it. It's not the best sushi I've ever had but it was really good. I though the salmon was really nice, it melted in your mouth. The miso soup that came with it was delicious. I tried my boyfriend's dragon and Cali roll and the dragon roll wasn't spicy like you'd think the name would suggest but sweet and tasty. The Cali was good too. I wasn't crazy about the salad dressing but I ate it. If the take out experience wasn't such a frustrating experience I probably would've given the dine in a try but no... I'm good.
