O'Donnell's Pub is good enough that the opportunity to eat here again was a significant reason in why I recently stayed in Connellsville for a second time, rather than giving Somerset a chance. It was the best place I ate on my weeklong trip in August, and it was once again the best place I ate on my ski trip this past weekend. A lot of pubs have burgers, fries, a few sandwiches, that sort of thing. It gets repetitive. O'Donnell's has that, but really knocks it out of the park with their main courses. You get the pub atmosphere, and good hearty food, but so much more variety than most places, and it's all delicious. Perhaps most impressive of all, they rotate in a variety of specials, and those are really good too. Their kitchen staff is versatile and skilled. The first time I went, I had a grouper special, with rice and vegetables, all cooked really nicely, not dry at all, and well flavored. Dessert was chocolate Guiness cake with Bailey's frosting, which was as good as it sounds. A few days later, I got the blackened chicken alfredo. Although not quite as gobsmackingly impressive as what I had the first time, it was still a really solid pasta dish. Five months later, I was back, and went with another special, the Berkshire pork chop, with homemade mashed potatoes as the side. Both were really good, but the mashed potatoes - best I've had in years. And carrot cake for dessert - not quite as unique as the Guiness cake, but another really good dessert. It also has a great atmosphere to dine in and really good service. Allison was working at least the first and third times I was there, still remembered me five months later, and was just as good at taking a phone-in order this weekend as the in-person ones earlier. They have their regulars who go there for the food and service, but also make newcomers welcome. Excellent staff. People around town recognize their food too. On Saturday, they were closing a bit early due to the snow, so I took my takeout up to Yough River Brewing (which welcomes outside food). At one point a man asked if my food was from O'Donnell's, and I said that it is, and a few minutes later I'm talking with his friend, the mayor, who loves O'Donnell's as well. And no wonder! Beloved had Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural wonder of Falling Waters on his bucket list. So, I decided to take him there. Little did I know that Falling Waters was located way out in the Pennsylvania boonies. The closest town we could find to stay the night before going to Falling Waters was Connersville, which can best be described in one word, "vapid." It was hilly, with plenty of pickup trucks with shotgun rakes, and a bunch of dive bars. What to do? And worse it's Beloved's birthday. So, Yelp to the rescue where I located O'Donnell's Pub. O'Donnell's Pub turned out to be great. It has the best of quality foods and the friendliest of staff. I had their filet tips Gorgonzola with pasta, tomatoes, and scallion. Beloved went for their salmon and we both agreed that our dishes were perfection in their deliciousness. We have eaten here several times now (all take out orders because we're frequently on the go) and we have been happy every time! I must admit, it took me awhile (too long) to try their food, from the outside it looks more like a corner bar so I expected typical bar food. I was very pleasantly surprised that they are so much more (and from other reviews here I see everyone agrees with me, their pork shank is FANTASTIC) !!! I stopped in one day for a drink at the bar (thank you to the bar tender for a great specialty drink suggestion) and to place my to-go order. After ordering I decided to walk back and check out their back patio as well. Definitely somewhere we would like to sit on a beautiful day. We were trying to find somewhere for dinner- other than fast food-on a Sunday evening when heading home from a visit in PA. Found this place while doing a Yelp search- it did not disappoint! It was not busy at all. We were greeted, seated, and served by Seth- who was friendly & welcoming & gave us a few menu suggestions. We ordered cheese sticks as an appetizer which were supposed to be served with yellow mustard. Seth pointed this out and asked if we wanted this. We opted for marinara instead. They came out quickly and were tasty! We both ordered double cheeseburgers- one bacon and one American. They were served with fries. We found this place on Yelp, just looking for a comfortable bar for a drink and some grub. Since we live out of town and are unfamiliar with the area. We were greeted very warmly on a Saturday evening by a young female bartender, unfortunately I can't remember her name, but she made a few drink and dinner recommendations, which were spot on. The server and manager were very conversational and fun to talk to. The menu is classic pub-fare. Though they didn't have fish-n-chips, I did order the fried cod sandwich with onion rings. The cod sandwich was a beast. Hot and crispy fish with house special sauce, lettuce, and tomatoes. A solid offering and very filling. However, my sammy was upstaged by the onion rings which were big, beautiful, batter-fried delights. Piping hot and full of tender onion. We are traveling through and just had a delicious meal: Guinness-glazed chicken breasts, a spinach quesadilla, and salads (one side, one Caesar, and one House). We also got A side of really good asparagus (veg of the day) for $3. Our waitress was friendly and helpful, even if we bombarded her with a million questions upon arrival. The food was amazing! I had the pork shank, fell off the bone! Mashed potatoes were delicious as well. Only small complaint..not enough sauerkraut and I would have also liked applesauce. Like I said SMALL complaint. The food is incredible. I've never had a bad meal yet. The salmon is delicious and the homemade dressings are to die for. Everything is so fresh and you can tell there's love put into each dish. We sat in the bar which was quite cozy with an electric fireplace on the walls and little seating area. Great food! I heard about it being good, but after trying another local establishment and the line being long decided to go elsewhere. Glad we came here! This place is our #1 place in Connellsville! Have ate here about 8 times or more but tonight was the best! Our server was Abby who proved that you take care of your customers they will feel like family. We have been telling friends and coworkers that the pork shank is to die for. They absolutely agree! Great food, great service, but 2-star deduction for not caring about the community enough to wear face masks. My wife and I were served by 4 different wait staff, an impressive attentive group, but not a one was wearing a face mask. As we sat next to a table with 4 people all of whom were senior citizens I couldn't help imagine how they would fare if they were to contract the virus. I thought at first it might be a regional arrogance, but as we walked down the main street in your small town we peaked into other restaurants all with servers wearing protective face masks.
