My boys took me here for Mother's Day dinner...and well, here's the deal. First of all, I love O-Ku (used to love)...and have been here many times before in the past. Although a bit too dark (like I could hardly see the menu!!), I've always liked the overhead music and the general vibe here. However, things were just not the same on this special occasion. I think they were short-staffed...and it caused MAJOR delays, and unattentive service. Our waiter was actually good, and he tried his best...but just couldn't get around all the tables. We had to wait at least 20-30 minutes for our entrees...and dessert must have taken another 20 minutes?? Anyway, we shared their Rock Shrimp appetizer. Despite it being a special occasion, I went kinda light...and just ordered 1 sushi roll (Red Dragon, I think?) and Seaweed Salad. My husband also got a sushi roll (??), and my son got this Chicken Teriyaki dish. For dessert, we got this "Sata Andagi"...described as "donut holes", but there were no holes...just mini-round donuts. For such a fancy name, it sure was a dull looking dessert. Overall, all the foods were totally underwhelming...as I didn't feel that any item was like OMG delish! I guess my favorites were the shrimp appetizer? I remember thinking this in the past as well, but their sushi rolls are much smaller than most...and just not that impressive. Also, the presentation of the sushi rolls were just BLAAAH. My son's Teriyaki looked ridiculously sloppy...just thrown on the plate like a 1-star restaurant! Just check my pictures, and see if I'm making any of this up. Ironically, the only food that looked nicely presented was the seaweed salad lol! WAY overpriced for such mediocre foods and lackluster presentations. BTW, I also thought their menu changed...but not for the better. Same with the drink. I got this cocktail (forgot the name), but it was terrible. Looked and tasted BLAAH. Not even strong. I was totally disappointed with this meal. I never felt this way before from my prior dining experience, so either something changed (management?), or they were short-staffed and just rushing thru. I regretted choosing this place for the special occasion...that is all.

You typically think of gems as being off the beaten path--yet I completely missed O-Ku for years...despite its prominent placement at Atherton Mill! If you're looking for some of Charlotte's freshest & most innovatively presented sushi in a beautifully adorned setting bound to impress any friend/date/business associate, this is your spot. Pro Tip: There's a week night happy hour that can't be beat. Cheers!

My family and I dined in on Easter Sunday & had a wonderful time. The manager Will always has a smile on his face, great dude. Started off with the spicy edamame, almost has a Korean BBQ tang, but with chilies The duck buns were gone so fast I forgot to take a picture!! Annnd the same thing happened to the chicken teriyaki!! The Truffle Toro Roll is my all time favorite. Lemon salmon is always a classic. The Get in Mt Belly roll was good, I am just not a huge fan of the torched yellowtail. The main takeaway this trip was the A5 Wagyu nigiri and I can't express this enough. And they have REAL FRESH WASABI!! but be ready to pay for it ¨ UPDATE: Came back for a birthday dinner and had phenomenal service! They were able to accommodate us with our many different reservations update so I have to thank them for their patience! Aside from what we ordered the Chef sent over multiple complementary dishes, including edamame, sweet-and-sour, tempura, shrimp and a sushi Dorito like platter. It was awesome!! The biggest Takeaway from this trip was the scallop Oku nigiri. Hands-down one of the best profiles I have ever put in my pallet! We also did the Teppanyaki style A5 Wagyu with the hot stone skillet. It can't get any better than this. For dessert, the strawberry eclair! There is so many more words to describe that I lack in my vocabulary, to describe how good this is to you. GET IT Thank you O-Ku!!!

I was a fan of O Ku for the longest time, but recently it's dropped a bit in rank for me. Specifically for their happy hour. They used to do half price rolls during happy hour, and it was all rolls except one. Now, they switched it to rolls are $9, not half price, and they took some out of the happy hour selection. Don't get me wrong, O Ku sushi is good, but I could go to my other favorite sushi spot and get just as good of sushi if not better for a lower price.

O-Ku is really a gem of the CLT food scene. Beautiful restaurant, great ambiance, terrific service and most importantly- DELICIOUS food. I have loved O-Ku every single time. O-Ku is well known for their sushi menu. They also have tons of nigiri and sashimi options. There's so much to recommend because so many items off the menu were GREAT. Both the yellowtail and bluefin carpaccio are delicious. The crispy rice which comes with smoked salmon on top is phenomenal. The duck buns are a must try. They're kind of similar to Bao buns but the bread they use is different and buttery. For me personally, all the fresh seafood is the highlight of this place. My recommendation is to order 2-3 different items as the plates are smaller here. As for the cocktails, there's lots of fun sake (Japanese rice wine) options on the menu and also all the classics as well. During my latest visit, I had dinner at the bar and it was a great vibe. You can tell this establishment takes service seriously. Prepare to be spoiled. Everyone was attentive, professional and also super knowledgeable. I truly have no complaints. O-Ku makes for a great date night, girls night out or special occasion. Keep an open mind with the menu and don't be afraid to try new items you haven't tried. Believe me when I say: O-Ku doesn't disappoint.

Amazing food, best quality fish in charlotte. We sat at the bar and our bartender Ris was super kind! She made me the BEST cocktail and recommended her favorite dishes. Best sushi/nigiri spot in Charlotte.

My favorite sushi in Charlotte! The food is amazing and the service is always fantastic! I also like the moody ambiance. Perfect for date night and girls night out!

Went back to celebrating #8! Did not disappoint. Justin was our waiter again, he nails it on recommendations, love for the food and balance of chating with you all while just being a rockstar waiter. We took many of his recommendations as well as some of our go to faves, the meal in itself was fantastic. The service and ambiance just tops it off. Having a place where you can enjoy a romantic night out, yet still share a good laugh without getting side eyed- while having a delicious meal . Drinks are also bomb! Didn't get too many pictures of everything, but we love this place and it's definitely one to share.

What are the happy hour specials on Mon & Wed?

Half off most of the sushi rolls. There's only maybe 2 rolls that aren't included in the special.

Does this location do happy hour?

They have half price sushi rolls Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-7pm, if you count that as happy hour

    What's your favorite dish?

This is really hard to pick. Based on our guests feedback I would have to say the Salmon Uzuzukiri is the most popular. Thanks for the question.

Do they have a riceless sushi option?

    Yes crudo and other options

Our server was certainly stretched thin, but she was so friendly and handled everything well. We started with the spicy edamame (more like a sweet sauce on top, not too spicy). I had the tuna on tuna roll and split the Atlantic roll with a friend. They were very different but both SO good. The crispy scallop on the Atlantic roll was a little too fried for my liking, but the rest of the roll was so flavorful. The tuna roll was more fresh and I loved the scallions on it. We ordered the El Diablo, Green Goblin, and Yellow Jacket rolls, and all three were flavorful and well balanced with fresh fish and perfectly seasoned rice. Each roll felt indulgent without being overdone. The fried Spam appetizer was a standout--crispy, salty, and delicious. We also tried the beef bulgogi bowl topped with a fried egg, which was rich, comforting, and satisfying once the yolk mixed in. The only downside was the espresso martini, which was made using a canned mixer rather than being freshly crafted--something we weren't expecting and didn't love. Not the restaurants fault, we didn't read the menu close enough. That said, the food absolutely delivers, and we'd still come back.

To make things worse, the initial plates came out cold (both mine and my date's) which was very disappointing. My remade plate did come out hot, but by then the experience was already affected. I also didn't like that it's $5 extra for more rice, even if you're just trying to substitute it for the veggies. That felt unnecessary. The fried calamari tasted like it came straight out of a frozen box, and instead of squid rings, it was more like straight pieces of squid, which wasn't what I expected. To top it off, I found what looked like a white hair in my food and had to get my plate remade. The server was very nice and handled it well, which I appreciated, but the overall food quality just didn't make up for it. As someone who eats hibachi often, I'd say this spot needs to add more flavor and seasoning to really stand out. I'd probably pass on this hibachi spot.

We ordered a double order of the Philly roll, an order of dumplings, and a hibachi steak with mushrooms plate to go for about $48. The staff were very friendly, attentive, and made ordering very smooth/easy. There isn't really a waiting area per se, so we sat at a table while waiting on our order (which didn't take very long). Philly Roll: kids liked it. You can't really go wrong with smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber. The fish tasted fresh. Dumplings: I think this was supposed to come with 6, but we only had 5. The dumplings are a mix of chicken and pork. They tasted okay. I prefer pan fried, while there were more so steamed. Hibachi steak with mushrooms: comes with sweet carrots, fried rice, and a 4oz container of white sauce. The carrots were indeed sweet (naturally) but quite mushy. I found the rice and the steak to both lack seasoning. The sauce was a MUST. I wish I was asked how I like my steak cooked cuz these were bordering well done. Nonetheless, I don't think I'll go back here for hibachi or dumplings. The sushi is a maybe but for its price point, I can find better or cheaper options that are comparable in taste.

I asked for medium rare steak but of course I knew that it would be well done. That is of most hibachi places I go to.

Over the weekend, we got to check out this new Japanese fusion place in South End…read more.. As anticipated, the place was very pretty and posh...with a sleek color motif of black and pink (one of my fave combos!). Since the weather was so nice, we decided to sit in their patio area...very nice! Can't say I loved the playlist (a bit busy and random...everything from soulful lounge music and hip hop, to Donna Summers, Salt 'n Pepper, etc.etc.), but I loved the overhead volume...giving the place a festive ambiance. I just hoped that the music would be a tad more relaxing and sophisticated...but then, I get it. Am sure the vast majority of folks coming here are in their 20's or 30's. Service was good. I think both Managers-Owners (?) stopped by our table to check on us...and our waitress did her best. However, we did find it odd that we had to ask for soy sauce and wasabi with our Unagi nigiri order. Maybe this had something to do with it being a fusion place? As for the menu, there were several tantalizing and interesting options. My husband and I both decided to start with 2 orders of Unagi (as an appetizer). Then we agreed to share their signature dish, Lobster Fried Rice, as well as 2 sushi rolls, "The Genie" and "Kimchi Fried Chicken". We also finished our meal with their Panna Cotta (with Strawberry). Well, we both thoroughly enjoyed everything...but our favorites were the Lobster Fried Rice and the Panna Cotta. Sushi Rolls were good, but I felt I've had better? The Lobster Fried Rice, however, was possibly THE best Fried Rice dish I've had to date! The Panna Cotta was amazing too...just wished there were a bit more of it? BTW, I liked their cocktail, "Lotus Milk Punch"...but here's the thing. Despite the lofty price point, there just wasn't much of it...as there was this big block of ice taking all the space (just as with Whiskey drinks). Also, I didn't feel that it was strong enough. So here's where I dock a star. I feel that when a drink is this expensive (20?!?), it should be well worth it. Despite the good taste, it fell a bit short on its stingy portion and weak alcohol content. One other minus I must mention is the lack of parking here. You just have to drive around until you find a space along the road. It's a good thing we came early! Still, this is a great, new addition to Charlotte...and it's a cute spot for a date night or a girl's night out. I'd definitely wouldn't mind returning to try a few more items on the menu...and a repeat order of their amazing Lobster Fried Rice!

The music and energy of the room made the whole experience feel special. Super cute for Faye night or girls night. The sushi was outstanding and incredibly fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. Every dish we tried was delicious, and the cocktails were just as impressive. What made the night even better was the hospitality. The staff and owners were warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about what they do. You can tell this place was created with a lot of care. Amazing food, amazing drinks, and an amazing experience. I can't wait to come back to my new favorite spot.

It's served slightly warm with a tiny jalapeno and a dash of chili hot sauce on each piece. I got the Summer roll ($16) and loved it. It was shrimp tempura, lobster salad, mango slices, and chili sauce. I also got the lychee vodka sake tini ($15) and it was delicious. The other 2 gals loved their rolls also. Our waiter was good about checking on us, but I did have to flag him down to get regular soy sauce. Only light soy sauce is available on the table. Free Parking is in a garage directly behind the restaurant. Definitely will return !

Unfortunately, the experience fell short in several areas. Given the location, you'd expect the service to be A1. Instead, I was highly disappointed. Our server was friendly enough and did share the popular items, which I appreciated, but the follow-through from the kitchen didn't match the expectations that were set. I went with the recommended Panther Roll, and it was not at all what I expected -- it came out half-baked and lacking in both flavor and presentation. The crab Rangoons were even more concerning; they were fried in what tasted like old oil, leaving a heavy greasy aftertaste. The batter itself didn't seem right, and overall they were difficult to enjoy. I've worked in the hospitality industry for seven years and recently started writing reviews to offer honest feedback that can help restaurants improve. I genuinely dislike writing negative reviews, but this visit left me no choice. Konnichiwa has the potential to be a hit with a more engaged, enthusiastic staff, consistently hot food, and some attention to kitchen maintenance -- especially the fryer and oil. I hope this feedback is helpful, and I truly believe with a few adjustments, the experience could be much better.
