Tora had mixed results for me. The pan-seared gyoza was decent and had good flavor. Unfortunately, the shrimp tempura ramen was very disappointing. The ramen noodles were overcooked, and the shrimp tempura became extremely soggy sitting in the broth, which ruined both the texture and the overall dish. I wasn't a fan of pairing tempura directly in the ramen for that reason. I might return to try other menu items, but I would skip the shrimp tempura ramen. Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Tora! We came in for a table of 3 on a Saturday evening and were lucky to get a table at 6pm. It was much busier by 6:30/7. Our server was certainly stretched thin, but she was so friendly and handled everything well. We started with the spicy edamame (more like a sweet sauce on top, not too spicy). I had the tuna on tuna roll and split the Atlantic roll with a friend. They were very different but both SO good. The crispy scallop on the Atlantic roll was a little too fried for my liking, but the rest of the roll was so flavorful. The tuna roll was more fresh and I loved the scallions on it. I wouldn't say this is my #1 sushi in Charlotte, but I would definitely go back and recommend! read more

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Loved the atmosphere and the staff was friendly and welcoming.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered the El Diablo, Green Goblin, and Yellow Jacket rolls, and all three were flavorful and well balanced with fresh fish and perfectly seasoned rice. Each roll felt indulgent without being overdone. The fried Spam appetizer was a standout--crispy, salty, and delicious. We also tried the beef bulgogi bowl topped with a fried egg, which was rich, comforting, and satisfying once the yolk mixed in. The only downside was the espresso martini, which was made using a canned mixer rather than being freshly crafted--something we weren't expecting and didn't love. Not the restaurants fault, we didn't read the menu close enough. That said, the food absolutely delivers, and we'd still come back. read more

I ordered some of these items before, so knew what to expect. Their Chicken Katsu is quite generous...a HUGE portion. I also remember it being quite good, but this time, I thought that their curry sauce could have been better. I've had their Spicy Tuna Crunchy Rice before too, and was reminded how seriously spicy they were...much more so than most I've had. I actually really like this restaurant, but several things were amiss this time. Just as last time, I had to walk up to the bar to ask for a spoon. Shouldn't the waitress know better to bring a spoon when you order a rice dish?? Why JUST the fork at this restaurant??? Also, the Lychee Mojito was good, but way too much ice for the price point. Speaking of price point, this is another one of those restaurants that add a 3% tax for using a credit card. Not a fan of restaurants doing that. Lastly, the waitress was a bit slow on the take. I literally had to repeat myself up to 6 times when I tried to revise my order...like taking "Seaweed Salad" off the order. Not sure why that was so hard for her to understand. She had an accent, so there was definitely some communication issues. It also took the waitress forever to bring the final bill. Really didn't understand this either...as there were only a few diners there. *SIGH* Again, I really like this restaurant and their menu, so I really don't want to drop the ratings too low...but things were just amiss today. Tora is a GOODIE. I really enjoyed my visit. 4.5 stars. Pretty much everything I tasted was very yummy. They lose a tiny bit of points only because I felt a lot of their sushi rolls were either tempura (so fried protein inside) or many of them had cream cheese - versus the more traditional classic rolls. I came with a group of 10. Our waiter was very friendly and accommodating. For my main course, I got the pork bulgogi. I was not impressed. It lacked flavor and reminded me of a simple stir fry. I had to ask for chili sauce because it lacked any heat whatsoever. I would not get this again. I also got a salmon & avocado roll ($9), but had to ask for more wasabi because they only gave a dab. Otherwise, the roll was good. 2 ladies got the crawfish roll on special ($15) and neither were impressed with it. They were surprised the crawfish was warm that was placed on top. For dessert, I got the mango panna cotta ($9) they said was made in house. It was very good. More light than normal with a heavy mango puree on top. Overall, I would come back. They have 2 price points of sushi: around $9 or around $18. The restaurant validates parking, so be sure to bring your ticket from the attached garage. I've been driving past Tora for years and finally stopped in. It was a Thursday night so not busy at all. I was immediately seated and greeted by the super friendly waiter. We ordered the crab Rangoon as an appetizer and my only regret is that we didn't get 2 orders - it was amazing! For my entree I had the combo pad thai and the super crunch shrimp roll. Both were delicious, fresh and the portion size was enough to take home. My husband took me here for my birthday and it has been on my list for a while now. Really enjoyed the entire experience - the sushi was fantastic and reasonably priced for uptown Charlotte. The rolls we ordered were between $12-15. There were more expensive rolls with lobster up to $22 per roll. I would highly recommend the crispy rice with spicy tuna. The restaurant was a cool vibe - elevated atmosphere with a large bar and neat decor. I found it to be a little slower than would have liked, but it was busy. We accidentally came after a panthers game ended and the restaurant was pretty full. I would also say that it might have been slow because of the way we ordered. It took the server probably 10ish minutes to come over to us after we were seated, so by that point we knew we wanted to start with seaweed salad and edamame, but we also knew a few rolls we wanted so we ordered at the same time. I expected the seaweed salad and edamame to come out first, but they waited and brought it all out at once. Next time I would differentiate better. I stumbled into Tora after a long 10-hour work shift--exhausted but craving a good meal. I'd driven past this spot countless times, always curious, especially since the space had housed a few different restaurants over the years. As a sushi lover, I finally decided to stop in--and I'm so glad I did. Tora is located off Morehead, right off Exit 10. They offer garage parking in the back and even validate it, though I ended up parking on a side street. I entered through the patio, where I ran into Dias, who was on a break. He immediately opened the door for me and kindly asked where I'd like to sit. The hospitality started from the moment I arrived. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The decor instantly impressed me--modern, warm, and stylish.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The patio has a charming view overlooking the street, which I loved.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Since I was dining solo and planned to take some food to go, I chose to sit at the bar. Dias handed me a menu and took my drink order. He also crafted one of the best lychee martinis I've ever had--fresh, smooth, and just the right amount of sweetness. For appetizers, I ordered the Spam musubi--something I've always wanted to try--and it did not disappoint. I'm a big Spam fan, and this was delicious. I also had the miso soup, which was rich and comforting--definitely something I'll be ordering again. By that point, I was already feeling full, but I stayed for a couple more drinks. Adi took over at the bar, and he was just as warm and welcoming as Dias. I truly felt so taken care of throughout the night. For my takeout, I ordered the sweet and sour chicken, upgraded with fried rice--and I'm so glad I did. The food was incredibly fresh and full of flavor. Tora has officially made it onto my list of go-to spots. We came on a Mon/holiday weekend so the place wasn't real busy....which made it easy to get seated. They have a very large space indoors and at the bar....and ample seating on the patio (which is where we sat). The have a good drink menu including some local beer options which is a plus and not always the case at a sushi place. We started with Edamame ($5) which was all good. My bride ordered the Beef Bulgogi Rice Bowl ($16) and really enjoyed it. However, after eating it for awhile, a bug crawled out of it (no, it wasn't a flying insect that landed).....which was certainly a pause and not something anyone would want. I ordered the Legion Roll ($16) and Tuna on Tuna Roll ($13). The Legion roll was light on Salmon (super thin and not on each piece)....I would rather they charge more and have a more adequate representation of fish on the roll. The Tuna on Tuna Roll had more fish, but I would ordered it with the spicy mayo on the side....as it was too much. Friendly service, but it took a significant amount of time to get the sushi. It wasn't busy in the restaurant....but they may have been short staffed for the holiday. All in all, I'm a little mixed on our experience but wanted to give the benefit with a 4 star and try it again and see if the experience is better next time. read more

Loved our experience! The staff was friendly and attentive. We ordered a sushi roll as an appetizer and then each chose an entree. I ordered the mie goreng, which was delicious, and my partner chose the chicken katsu curry. I loved both dishes and would get them again. The restaurant was busy, as it was a Friday night, and they had patio seating as well as indoor. We sat close to the outside to get the breeze but no space directly on the patio - beautiful night! The food was reasonably good at Tora, but the service was so bad I wouldn't recommend going to this place. We were one of the first tables sitting at 6:30pm. Several staff members, including a guy that I thought was the manager, were standing about 20 feet away from us having a conversation. No one came to our table to say hello or ask us if we wanted drinks for so long that it was awkward. I had to flag the manager over. He went to the back somewhere and found our server. It was really weird. The rest of the service was equally bad and awkward. We needed clean plates after our appetizer, so I had to go to the waiter stand and get them for the table myself. Our dirty plates were never cleared.....as in never. We sat and had a few drinks and talked for about an hour without our table being cleared. The sushi rolls were average. The ceviche appetizer doesn't come with anything to put ceviche on, so you have to sit there and eat soupy ceviche with chopsticks. Ceviche isn't ceviche if you don't get chips or crackers to eat it with. Do better, Tora. Teach your staff how to properly service tables. read more

This is my go-to for a meal incorporating various Asian cuisines in the Charlotte area. We decided to try this place out for the first time on a Friday night, and although it was fairly busy, they were able to seat our larger group right away. So needless to say the service was amazing. The vibes were also nice for a casual but hip dinner. Onto the food! We began with the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice and Cheese Tteokbokki. The Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice was incredible. Melt in your mouth tuna was sitting atop a bed of perfectly crispy rice. The interior of the crispy rice was perfectly chewy and the jalapeño added a little spice, just the perfect amount. They gave us a good portion size for the price too. This was my favorite part of the meal (but I also have a bias towards good crispy rice). The Cheese Tteokbokki was pretty chewy and yummy, but it was lacking a little bit in flavor. Still a solid option though and huge portion size if you are a fan of tteokbokki. For our entrees, we got the Chicken Fried Rice, the Chicken Pad Thai, and the Queen Charlotte Roll. We were feeling comfort food and classics. I loved the fried egg on top of the Chicken Fried Rice-- it was a nice touch. The Chicken Pad Thai was also reliably delicious. The Queen Charlotte Roll was fun and delicious and I loved the addition of tropical fruits. Although we ventured away from sushi for the most part, our picks did not disappoint. I also have also tried take out from here, and to my surprise the food stays super fresh and yummy. Also, usually when there are lots of cuisines represented at one restaurant, you get a little worried that quality might be lacking in one or the other, but that is not the case for this restaurant. I'd driven by Tora a few times and admired their beautiful patio from afar. It would be a great place for happy hour on a warm evening. They are located inside of The Refinery. If you're heading from the city on Morehead, the parking deck is on the left just after you pass the restaurant entrance. They do validate parking, so be sure to bring your ticket in. The refinery is a sleek and modern building with other businesses, including Queen City grounds. It's a nice, quiet spot with areas to sit. Now for Tora... I made it in for lunch. The ambiance is industrial, with high ceilings, a ton of natural light and TVs over the bar. The service was prompt. The restaurant wasn't overly packed, which made for an efficient and smooth lunch service. I started with a mango mojito and ordered the beef bulgogi bento box for my meal. The bento box comes with your choice of entree listed, miso soup, a small salad, half of a California, Japanese Bagel or Spicy Tuna roll, gyoza, and a scoop of rice. The box pans out to be quite a bit of food in true bento fashion. I loved everything except the bulgogi, which genuinely tasted like they forgot the sauce/marinade--Just salt, pepper, onions and scallions. Sort of reminiscent of a cheesesteak without the cheese. I was so full when I got to it that I doused it in the remaining gyoza sauce, which made it much more flavorful, but it still did not qualify as a proper bulgogi. The soup, salad, spicy tuna roll and gyoza, however, were all delicious--super fresh, flavorful and well-executed down to the sauces. I will be back. I've been waiting for Tora to open for months so I was really excited to try them out. I wasn't able to dine in, so I placed an order to go. I ordered the hunky dori roll, crab rangoon and thai iced tea. Everything was pretty good! I definitely want to come dine in to get the full experience though, it was nice inside. Some pieces were pink inside and cold Entree- Atlantic Roll 5/5 - It was delicious combination of shrimp tempura and crab. It was love at first bite for me. Had the chance to have dinner at Tora tonight. We arrived around 6:30 and had no problem getting a table. The restaurant is beautiful. There is outdoor seating as well in two different areas of the restaurant. They also had live music tonight which was such an enjoyable surprise! Service was great and our server was attentive. I ordered a Thai tea for a beverage which was delicious. For appetizers we ordered the spam musubi and the ebi citrus. Both were good, but didn't stand out. For sushi rolls we had the K-pop and Atlantic. Both were fresh and filling. The prices were $17 and $18 dollars. We also decided on the fried rice with tofu and vegetables. The portion was very large and is perfect for sharing. Overall, I would say Tora is worth checking out and is on par with a few of my other favorite sushi spots. The Bulgogi Fries were DELICIOUS and we had some gyoza as well to start which we liked. I had the Dancing Eel Roll and my fiancé tried the Hunky Dory which we both found really delicious. We also tried the teriyaki rice bowl which was not very good. The chicken tasted like it had been cooked from frozen, not fresh, and was very chewy and rubbery. The bowl would've also been better had it included fried rice rather than plain white rice. There is no all you can eat sushi option here, but we still liked Tora and would recommend it! read more

The service here was unmatched and I would give them 6 stars if I could!! We came for a birthday dinner for 20+ people and were told they didn't take reservations. They still accommodated us and even kept pushing together tables when more people were showing up. They made sure there was plenty of water and we always had drinks. The appetizers came out SO fast and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time for the amount of people we had. She gave us 3 complimentary desserts for our friends birthday, and kept our cake cold until it was time to eat. The best part was with all the food and drinks, when the checks came out, every single persons check was right! And she was so positive the whole time. SO great! The food is reasonably priced. They had plenty of sushi options as well as some rice and some noodle dishes. They also had plenty of drink options as well.
