Upscale sushi spot great for any occasion. The restaurant has two floors with tons of seating (upstairs is bright and downstairs is very dark and moody). Overall great food, ambiance and service here. - Crispy Rice (5/5) - Firecracker Roll (5/5) - Rock Shrimp (3.5/5) - Scallop Temaki (5/5) Definitely prefer and recommend the sushi and options that are not marked for happy hour but still worth a try if you don't want to spend a ton.
I might give them another shot given the rave reviews, but tonight I'm disappointed. At this point, I haven't even seen my check so the price is not the issue, but the service and overall flavor for the price point definitely are. My Hotote crudo app which should be served cold was served cold on a super hot plate which means by the time I ate it, it was thus weird hot/semi-luke warm temp and honestly, not appetizing. I tried the Moriawase after and told my server I wanted to add caviar if it was possible and since I didn't get any, I assume it is only an option for the nigiri/sashimi. Silly but no problem. I was still sooooo hungry I ordered a Surf&turf roll and it was less than appetizing. It had no flavor which was terribly unfortunate. I didn't make a review about the sake mixup or my server only to be polite but there are definitely low points, and those make the list. I hope it's better for everyone else!
I've been trying to get a reservation here for the longest, so I was really excited to finally go--especially after hearing so many great things. But honestly, the experience didn't quite live up to the hype. My sister enjoyed her drink, but the rock shrimp was a letdown. It tasted overly oily with barely any sauce. We were hungry, so we didn't send it back, but it definitely wasn't worth it. The sushi overall was just okay, which was surprising--I expected it to be amazing. That said, my last tuna roll (can't remember the exact name) was actually really good--about an 8.5/10. The service was decent. Q made sure we were taken care of, but he did seem a bit annoyed by some of our questions. We asked about the 4% wellness charge since we'd never seen that before (and I consider myself a foodie). Apparently, it goes toward health and medical benefits, which is different from the usual service charge. I will say, the space itself is beautiful with a very relaxed vibe. I also had no idea there was an upstairs, which was a nice surprise.
Delicious sushi spot in Union Market area. We ate on the rooftop, which I highly recommend if the weather is right, although the inside decor looked super nice and chic as well. Loved the sushi and edamame with truffle. The crispy rice was to die for! Service could have been a bit better, we kept having to ask for water and get attention to order more. Excited to go back and try more!
We came here for Valentine's Day. Managed to snag a reservation for 5 PM, right when they open, at the sushi bar. The staff were all absolutely lovely. And we even got a cute little Valentines gift. I can't say enough nice things about our server - she was so great. Sitting at the sushi bar was neat as we got to see everything being made. We also got to try some complimentary bites. Great experience! The cocktails were crazy good. Everything we ordered was delicious. The salmon usuzukuri was so good we ordered it twice. The Kobe baller was another standout. The scallops were also fantastic. Such a yummy meal! Highly recommend! We will definitely be back.
This place has such a wonderful atmosphere -- it's quickly become one of my favorite spots. The food is reliably great every time I visit, and since it's just a short walk from home, it's become my go-to. The customer service is top-notch. Everyone I've encountered has been fantastic, but Q deserves a special shoutout for consistently going above and beyond to make sure every guest feels well taken care of.
O-Ku is well worth a visit if you're in the mood for high-end sushi, upscale ambiance, and attentive staff. The dining area / sushi bar has low lighting, modern and quiet enough to hear your companion. making it a great spot for night out in the Union Market Area or anytime you want elevated sushi experiences. The food was melt in your mouth fish, had spice complexity , and the everything was absolutely delightful. With portions that are small...we ended up ordering quite a bit more than expected. It's definitely on the pricey side and you wont be disappointed. If you are into Japanese whisky pairing, this is the menu for you with upscale selections. The wait staff are "nerdily intelligent" about everything on the menu, which I appreciated and made my selections easier. Make reservations, follow the mapping since this place can easily be missed. Great for special-night-out sushi experiences than a casual fill-your-plate kind of place.
O-Ku is one of the best sushi experiences I have ever had. The restaurant is beautiful. The sushi bar looks incredible. Everything the sushi chefs prepare looks and tastes phenomenal. Our server was able to answer all of our questions and recommend how we follow the menu which totally improved our dining experience. At this restaurant you can go at your own pace so you can sort of choose when you want the rolls or the small bites the sashimi or the appetizers to come out and it really helps you pace how much sushi you wanna have. I loved the atmosphere. I loved the sushi. The fish felt and tasted so fresh. I'm still raving about this place to my friends. This is going to be one of my new go to Staples every time I'm in DC.
It doesn't look like too much from the outside, but inside the vibes are high! We sat at the bar which I recommend because it is so entertaining watching the sushi being prepared. The best sushi I probably have ever eaten specifically the snow king roll. 100% worth coming here. I still think about this spot even after I moved away from the DC area.
I will never not rave about this place. The food, the service, the vibes, ALL SO GOOD!!!!! Everything is sooooo yummy and so fresh and the service is always so so pleasant. Bummer that there's no HH on fridays but the price is always worth it -- I've never left feeling hungry, & drinks are great. However the mt Fuji was slightly more crabby than I would've liked but that's a personal preference. Always always will recommend!
O-Ku! Wow! My favorite human and I had tried to come before but it was closed, it opens at 5 p.m. everyday of the week. Noted! On Wednesday we made the decision to hop over to Union Market to try it again. Staff were super nice, attentive, and service was superb! Ambiance is sleek, sexy, and a vibe! We met close friends for a couples happy hour date night and it did not disappoint! The Happy Hour menu is limited but it does the job! Overall, we loved it! Rooftop is NICE! I've ventured all through this area and somehow missed O-Ku all these years. Glad I found it thanks to him! Returning VERY SOON! Let's Get Into It! Rock Shrimp - Delicious! Snow King Roll- Yummy! We had a great experience at O-ku! We were seated in the back room at the sushi counter, which was a lot of fun! We tried some of the appetizers, nigiri, and rolls. I really loved the steak skewers they were so tender and flavorful. The sushi rolls were very fresh. They had a lot of options to choose from. We got extra lucky because the waiter offered us some extra rolls that the kitchen was trying to get rid of, and they were really good! So we ended up eating more than we planned. The restaurant has an upscale, trendy vibe. Definitely make a reservation! We had tried to come in twice as a party of two without a reservation and could not get in.
My friend and I made a reservation the day before for 5:45 PM on a Tuesday. We arrived at 5:40 PM and weren't seated until 5:45 PM. We ordered all 5 happy hour rolls: Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon, Harvest Roll, Snow King, Tuna Tataki My favorite was the Snow King roll (I love anything with seared salmon) and my friend's favorite was the Tuna Tataki roll. Our least favorite was the Harvest Roll which has goat cheese - I think the goat cheese was a bit overpowering but I was glad to have tried it nonetheless (this was the only roll we didn't finish but we only left 3 pieces behind). My friend and I were busy yapping for the majority of the evening so I wasn't paying the most attention to the food, but I did feel like the rice felt more dry than I'm used to (though that may have been because we took our time eating and it dried over time). We were gifted some crispy rice (I believe it was tuna but not 100% sure) that was my favorite bite of the evening. Love that they ask you what you'd like to add to your water like lemon, lime, and cucumber. Ambiance is indeed great for a date night with the dim (but not too dim!) lighting and luxurious but not obnoxious vibe. I'm curious to check out the rooftop sometime.

What can I say? O-Ku is simply amazing. From the décor to the ambiance, service, and food--everything was wonderful. It has officially earned a spot on my list of favorite places. We had a fantastic time exploring a variety of menu items while soaking in enjoying the inviting atmosphere. Here are my reflections: Environment O-Ku is a beautiful restaurant with a romantic, sophisticated ambiance. It's perfect for dates or dinner with friends. There is a bar close by the entrance, with additional dining space in the same area and as you move further through the restaurant. There's even more seating around the corner and they have rooftop space, adding versatility to the venue. The dim lighting and dope design create a cozy and elegant vibe. I love the scene - it's both relaxing and well suited to set the tone for a wonderful evening. Service The service was amazing. As first-time visitors, we truly appreciated how attentive and knowledgeable our server was. She walked us through the menu and gave fantastic great recommendations for both food and drinks. Everything ran smoothly which was refreshing and added to the overall enjoyable experience. Food The food was AMAZING - delicious and full of flavor. The standouts for me included the firecracker roll, the charred broccolini, the snow king and the crunch prawn roll - all delightful and bursting with incredible taste. Even the mushrooms, which I don't typically enjoy, were surprisingly good. The Yakitori Chicken was solid but not something I'd rush to order again, while the dumpling dim sum hit the spot. The food exceeded our expectations and I can't wait to return for my newfound favorites and try even more dishes. Overall O-Ku is wonderful. The ambiance is inviting, the service is excellent and the food is absolutely worth it. While it's on the pricier side, it's perfect for treat yourself moment or a special occasion. One of favorite low key sushi spots in my favorite place to hang out in the city. The rooftop is perfect for a happy hour. They had great happy hour food and drink options. I visited recently to celebrate a birthday, and the food here was great! You definitely need to make a reservation in advance. I planned the birthday dinner about a week or two in advance, and the only available time was 5:15pm - everything later than that had already been booked! After tasting the food, I completely understood why! Each dish was amazing! My boyfriend had the omakase, which came with 7 dishes total (including a dessert at the end), and I ordered different things a la carte. I had the Dumpling Dim Sum (really delicious gyoza), Rock Shrimp, Charred Broccolini (my bf and I both agreed that this was one of the best dishes!), Duck Negiyaki, and Sticky Ribs. Everything I ate was tasty! I would highly recommend the Charred Broccolini and the Duck Negiyaki. The broccolini came with a generous amount of veggie in a delicious sauce. The duck was cooked to perfection and had layers to its flavor that I took the time to meditate on and appreciate. My only concern with the duck is that there were only 4 small pieces of it, so if you want something more filling, you would have to order more food. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to other people, and I would come here again myself! read more

O-Ku was more than just OK--it was great! I had a wonderful dinner here with a friend on a busy Friday night. The restaurant was packed, but we were able to walk in without a reservation at 7 pm and waited about an hour for a table. I recommend making a reservation in advance. The cocktails were good, and I thought the option to add cucumber, lemon, and/ or lime to the water was great. The ambiance was both romantic and modern. It's also quite spacious inside. Karaage Chicken - Perfectly fried and cooked chicken thighs that came in a generous portion. The lemon aioli added a nice acidity to balance the richness of the fried chicken. (5/5) Surf & Turf Roll - Delicious and flavorful. No notes. (5/5) Yuzu Fuego Roll - A good roll, though not as memorable at the Surf & Turf. Similar rolls can be found at other Japanese and sushi restaurants. (4/5) Salmon Usuzukuri - Simply seasoned yet complex in flavor, perfectly balanced with truffle and yuzu. (5/5) Charred Broccolini - Amazing. Perfectly charred with a delicious nutty sesame and yuzu olive oil sauce. The crunchy garlic chili oil added great texture and a touch of heat. (5/5) Duck Negiyaki - Tasty and perfectly grilled duck, but the portion is small for the price. (4/5) Sata Andagi - Fried dough with matcha in the batter. The creme anglaise was standard. Ok, the table side lobster is a whole experience... even better than I remember!!! And those steak skewers are SO flavorful (just very small portion especially for price). Gorgeous spot, vibe/music on point. This restaurant may be one of my favorite in the city. The food was phenomenal, flavors were so vivid and full of complex blends. The drink is had had a wasabi ginger simple syrup which in my head didn't make sense but turned out to be delicious. The stand out dish was a citrus kai, the scallop and shrimp were cooled to perfection. The service was impeccable the waiter was knowledgeable, friendly and funny. The ambiance was great for a romantic evening or a cool evening to catch up with a small group. Amazing drinks, easy to spend alot of money tried 9 things on the menu and wanted to order more. My husband and I flew in from Los Angeles and decided to give O-Ku a try. It definitely was more than we expected. The food was absolutely delicious we had the wagu sushi, chicken & sticky ribs. Service was incredible we were celebrating being newly married and Quincy took incredible care of us. He was super attentive and gave us some great food suggestions. The restaurant was very romantic as well. We will absolutely be back!! read more
Unfortunately the camera doesn't eat first when it comes to me because sometimes the food is just too good!! As soon as I sit down at Oku, I immediately order the edamame and yellowtail carpaccio. This is the perfect way to start your food journey at Oku. As much as I want to get sushi, I can't help but to draw my taste buds to the steak skewers and broccolini. I'm sure my friends are tired of me raving about how good it is. (fun tip: I usually have to take my food to go and put my skewers in the same box as my steak and the sauce is phenomenal on the steak!!) For cocktails, I can't but help to recommend the sugar and spice. I'm a sucker for a passion fruit cocktail and this is on spot on! It's not too sweet and just the right amount of boozy. I usually come here alone because it's so easy to chat with the bartenders and staff, I usually don't feel alone. This a perfect date night spot or solo spot! read more
Very cool spot, from the door leading inside to the intimate lounge style waiting area, the atmosphere is just a whole vibe. The high top tables towards the back just after the bar were really nice, I would definitely recommend, it gives great privacy and a feeling of seclusion from the rest of the restaurant while still being in the mix of things. Now to the food , I orders the: - Harvest Roll The ingredients caught my eye, l was pleasantly surprised in a good way. This is quite literally the best sushi I've had (my husband agrees). Words will not convey how fresh and flavorful everything we tried was. We ordered 20 things from the menu, so I'd say we had a good representation of what they are capable of. I only took two photos because we devoured every single thing put in front of us. Our favorites: from the small plates--edamame with truffle salt; miso soup (I feel like I judge a restaurant by their ability to turn something ordinary and simple into something divine. This soup is FANTASTIC and I'm going to dream about it for the rest of my life); salmon usuzukuri (save the sauce and thank me later). Our favorite sushi roll was the tuna tataki, but all were wonderful and full of complex flavors that just married together. My husband ordered about 4 separate orders of their unagi nigiri. Their nigiri/sashimi is SO fresh and you have the option to cover with sweet soy glaze and torch it; the torching adds an interesting char flavor without overdoing it and creates a complex tasting experience. Their tuna and salmon are insanely fresh and some of the best quality I have ever had. Their signature nigiri offers interesting takes on the more simplified versions. Try the big eye and sake dreams. Cocktails were done extremely well, kept relatively simple, but also incorporated Japanese flavors and spirits. Our server was phenomenal, so passionate about her job and the menu and offered good insight and advice. I can't wait for indoor seating to open back up, so this place can start raking in more money (y'all, we NEED to protect this place at all costs.) (I thought pricing was fair and our bill was not even that high for how much we ordered. Enjoyed the nearly three hour experience soooo much). My favorite sushi place in DC, I call it my last supper. As in, when I leave DC area this will be where I eat last! I've brought tons of friends here and they love it too. Conveniently close to Union Market, and the vibes are always perfect - not too casual, not too fancy. My fav rolls are the tuna tataki and the firecracker. I love the mushrooms and the kimchi edamame is so good. I'm not usually someone who likes kimchi, but they did good with this one! My friend, who didn't like sushi prior to me bringing her here, always gets the surf and turf! read more

Love this place! We went tonight 12/31, Wish I could give it 5 stars... Pros: Great food with reasonable pricing. Happy hour pricing was even better. Ambiance was perfect. Music selection was amazing. We sat at the sushi bar and Soto (sushi chef) was incredible. Personable and great portion with the fish. Angel our server was also great. Positive and energetic! Con: Hostess. (Tall guy with braids) was not friendly at all. We asked if we can move to a different table since the one we were seated at was by a wall. He shut down and ignored our request. He even walked away and we needed to go back to the front to talk to him. All he kept responding was I" don't know what you're asking for" even though we were trying to explain... read more

This was my first time visiting O-ku! Let me just say I need JC as my server EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! He made our experience top-notch!! I will return just to see him and enjoy the food. It was everything!! I indulge and splurged on myself because I deserved to. I'm glad we just happened to go here by chance. It's definitely on my list to return. Everything we ordered was SO GOOD!! Loved the decor and ambiance. Very nice place for happy hour, date night, or even celebrating a special occasion. Service was a group effort and very fast and efficient. I was only there for happy hour, and honestly the sushi was a tad underwhelming. Potstickers were good. The shrimp was a little better than average. The happy hour sushi and one specialty roll were very average in my opinion. Did not match the luxurious setting. Have had much better sushi at less fancy and cheaper restaurants. Will definitely go back to explore more rolls because I want to be a regular here, it's extremely nice and inviting. 7/10 for now. read more
O-Ku is a cool spot if you're in the neighborhood. They have a lot of options outside of sushi if you're interested in that. I like that they have a variety of things to add to your water other than lemon or lime. I always go with cucumber. For appetizers we had the broccolini and citrus Kai which is a shrimp and scallop skewer. One of my favorite things on the menu. For sushi we had the unagi san roll, spicy tuna roll, the spider roll and the crunchy prawn roll. All the roles were good. I would like it if they just left the soy sauce on the table so you didn't have to flag someone down to get more. They also have a lavender lemonade mocktail that was delicious. read more

One of my favorite spots in DC for sushi! The ambiance is unbeatable, especially on a hot day. There are no windows and it feels like your being transported somewhere entirely new. I've been to O-Ku a few times now and each time have had a wonderful experience! From the beautiful wood door to the gentle ambiance, I love that O-Ku manages to balance upscale with casual. I can come in here with my sneakers and not feel underdressed, or I can come in decked out and not feel out of place either. Regardless of whether I've been with groups or by myself, I've always been impressed by the service. I've been seated at the high tops with a large group downstairs for a birthday party, upstairs in a booth for an intimate dinner as well have eaten at the bar downstairs solo before meeting up with some friends and each time the team here has been kind, warm, attentive and professional. That really does go a long way for me and is much appreciated! I've ordered such a range that it's typically a bit of a blur (especially with groups since we often share) but everything I've ever tasted has been delicious! The last time I was here recently we started with a few small plates that everyone seemed to love: dumplings, hamachi and the Tokyo chicken. The hamachi was amazing, but fair warning very small serving. However, pairing that with the Tokyo chicken (substantial size) was a great balance to share with the group. My friends were all obsessed with their rolls (one declaring it was the best thing she's eaten in a long time) and the majority of the table become equally obsessed with the donuts. Overall, this is just a very special (and IMO underrated) restaurant when it comes to being buzzed about. But I'm glad to see that the love here on Yelp is real and reflective of how awesome O-Ku is! read more

Intimately lit inside with a beautiful rooftop dining option makes this space versatile whether you're out with the friends, on a date, celebrating a birthday with your family, or sitting at the bar catching a vibe. Highly Recommend: Yellowtail carpaccio, Kobe style nigiri, Firecracker roll...and anything from the grill! Least fave rolls: spicy crunchy tuna, crab crunch, and harvest roll - otherwise literally any other sushi slaps I go every time I'm in the area (every other month) and I've only been met with mediocre service on 2 occasions. Typically, the staff is very knowledgeable, eager to answer questions, and remedy any issues. On 1 occasion my nigiri meat (Kobe style) had to have been subbed with a wagyu dupe because I chewed for a solid minute and had to "catch & release", but I'll blame economy because things have been good since then. Cannot wait to go back for the Omakase. read more

Every time I go to O-Ku I am impressed! The service is wonderful from the moment you sit down and they offer you fresh citrus with your water. The happy hour is quite unbeatable and I especially like that you can enjoy it from anywhere in the restaurant. I love the special nigiri and rolls. My personal favorite is the Surf & Turf. The food was so fresh and delicious. The waitress had fantastic recommendations and knew the menu well. Every single dish was amazing and we loved all of them. For DC, the pricing was really fair especially compared to other sushi spots. The cocktails were good as well and we did not have anything bad to say. Very nice and chic inside of the restaurant. It was quite dark in the restaurant but it added to its ambiance. I like how there were 2 different sections, the front bar area and the restaurant at the back, where you see a lot of cooking taking place. Our server was great at providing recommendations. He was very patient as well as we were trying to decide what to order. The karaage was an amazing appetizer, which was great with the sauce. The fish in the sushi, nigiri and sashimi were very fresh, but all in all very pricey. We also ordered 2 ounces of wagyu (minimum of 2 ounces) which was quite delicious and melted in your mouth. I also ordered a specialty cocktail, which was very strong but also delicious. I would say unfortunately due to the pricing (not including the wagyu) I cannot wholeheartedly give this place a perfect score. I cannot speak for all, but maybe I'm just not one who understands fine dining. read more

I heard somewhere that his place has food (or drink ) specials after 10? Can anyone confirm what they are? Thanks!!
Their late night menu is still in the works I believe. But from 10pm-12am Thursday-Saturday they are offering $3 off certain rolls, wings, and cocktails to some apartment buildings in the neighborhood.
