Just not what I expected. Based on other reviews and appearance of food in the pictures i saw I thought I was in for a treat. We got a chicken torta. The chicken was juicy and all breast meat which was great but the chicken itself lacked flavor. I had a huge piece of tendon in it too - so cute to eat that in public. The slaw was crunchy and fresh. The slaw sauce was delish I could taste avocado and something mildly sweet. The bread is fresh and tasty not chewy at all. I think the spread may have had avocado too. With all these flavors it was still not flavorful enough. The pan au chocolat was flaky and fresh and the chocolate itself was pretty good. Ordered it warm but got it cold. The brown bourbon coffee was not that great either sweet but not overly sweet but no bourbon flavor. Now the lavender blueberry scone was delicious. Not too dry and just enough lavender. Overall it lacked in flavor. We sat on in half "table half booth" they also have bench, & patio style chairs. Water offered free of charge and to-go containers as well. read more

I've gone here quite a few times over the past couple of years. More recently, I saw this one person working there that took my order and started calling me by the wrong name. I corrected her politely the first time. And every time after that it's been the same. And at this point it feels intentional. The food is fine, but it isn't great when you just ordered and that same person walks by and calls me by the incorrect name. It really makes the ambiance feel unpleasant. And I just don't want to be called the wrong name and correct her anymore. read more

Whoever made this iced matcha strawberry latte definitely needs a retraining. They serve regular matcha latte, but this iced matcha strawberry latte is, I believe, a limited item on their menu. Imagine the picture they had on the menu versus what I got - terrible. By presentation itself is 0/10. The taste? There was barely any matcha or strawberry. I don't think there was even enough milk. It was watery. The only thing that's keeping my review from being a 1 star is that the ambiance of the place is such a vibe. It is perfect for working or studying. Or a team breakfast/lunch. OMGosh! I had the best sandwich and the best experience today at Oaklandia. I had some business to take care of in Oakland today. I put too much time on the parking meter and had time to spare. I found a place that served soup, salad, sandwiches and pastries. Being downtown prices are always inflated. I was absolutely thrilled to get a turkey, bacon, cheddar, avocado, tomato, and spinach sandwich on a great bread that was made in-house. The sandwich was made warm and tasted amazing. The space was really nice. The menu board was bright, colorful and easy to read. Prices were surprisingly affordable. My sandwich plus the tip was $16.00! If you're ever on Clay/12th (I think) look for the shop. It's right on the corner! read more

This is an upgrade from what it was before (Specialtys). New look, new owner, new food...Nom Nom. After being forced back to in office work a lot has changed in downtown Oakland. Many of the places I used to eat are gone and the options aren't so many, or the options just aren't the most fulfilling. This was a good change to see/experience. The food & drink are very well made and tastes great. The interior is very well put together. comfortable and a good place to relax, work, eat or drink. LOVE this spot! This is the perfect spot for lunch where they offer an assortment of beverages - teas, coffee. Salads and sandwiches. I come here for the sandwiches - they have many options, the portions are large and the flavor is epic. They have plenty of indoor seating and a handful of chairs outside. I always pick my food up to go, but 100% recommend this lunch spot to anyone. Think the old school Specialtys, but new and improved. read more

Decided to stop by during lunch to buy a sandwich. The experience was a bit underwhelming to be honest. I previously purchased a delicious sandwich that one of the baristas recommended, based on what I told him I had a taste for. He told me he had one better and it was yummy! Btw, this was the first and only time I ordered from this place and was able to ask questions and get great recommendations. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of it and when I described it, she had no clue what I was talking about. Additionally, when I asked to purchase just half a sandwich, the total actually came up to the same amount of a full sized portion....because they add a side of greens. Like sheesh, y'all gonna make sure y'all get the money, huh? So I just ended up ordering a full sized sandwich with chips...since if I ordered the half size, I would be paying the same amount regardless. And it was slightly okay. Not at all what I was looking for and my sandwich still contained onions, even though I asked for no onions. That being said, The combination of high prices, and workers who can't be bothered to make recommendations or better yet, know the menu, leaves a lot to be desired. This location is in the lobby of my building, so it's convenient to go during lunch...but going forward, I will just walk across the street to another coffee/sandwich shop. Disappointing. read more

Pastries aren't bad but the drinks seem to consistently take a long time to prepare. Have had a couple regular lattes that were fine but not great. Have also had dirty matcha lattes and the matcha is not prepared correctly. It's like they are not whisking it because there are clumps which I've never seen in any other matcha drink. read more

I love Oaklandia! Since finding out about this cafe and bakery, I've become a regular. Great latte's, shmacking breakfast sandwiches, and spectacular salads. Recently, I placed an online order while Oaklandia was closed on December 26, and they gave me a store credit on one of their beautiful gift cards. I was walking by and decided to order an organic matcha latte with whole milk. The large is only $5.15 before tip, which is reasonably priced compared to some of the other cafes in the area. By default it's hot, I didn't think to ask if they can put ice in it. The drink was done within 2 mins. I wish the matcha was a bit stronger as it was mostly sweet and I felt the milk overshadowed a lot of the tea taste, but otherwise it was decent. Currently for fall, Oaklandia also offers a seasonal maple matcha, pumpkin pie latte, and hazelnut toffee latte. There was ample indoor seating with varying table and chair heights and types, and the music wasn't too loud but you may be able to lightly hear some other patrons' conversations. There are also some outdoor tables spaced far apart, so that you can enjoy your food or drinks outdoors. On a weekday, there doesn't seem to be much traffic outside by the shop so it's fairly peaceful outdoors. read more

Went here to meet up with a friend - perfect place for catching up, chatting, or getting some work done! Plenty of indoor seating with some tables outside. Very large interior and pretty comfortable chairs. Plenty of outlets. It's in a really nice part of Oakland within walking distance of Lake Merritt, which I HIGHLY recommend going to for an afternoon stroll. The spinach ricotta croissant ($4.25) was pretty good but would have been better warmed up. Drinks and pastries are reasonably priced, especially compared to a $10 Starbucks matcha latte. read more

This is my favorite cafe in Oakland. When my mom comes to visit she has to come here multiple times. We love the pastries and the sandwiches, everything is delicious. I have not been here in over a year because on one of my moms visits we were waiting to order, she was about to order one of everything from the bakery, plus we were going to have breakfast. The woman working the counter Kai never greeted us, two groups walked in after us and she completely ignored us and helped everyone else that came in after us. I told her how excited my family was and how she just ruined their experience. She just stared at me. A couple days ago my friend and I were walking our dogs and I was telling her about this place. She said let's go. I figured a lot of time had passed let's give it another shot. I see Kai at the beverage station but she's not taking orders so Im hoping it will be fine. The person who took our order was amazing I forget her name but she was very sweet. My friend asked for her sandwich to be vegan friendly and they remade it for her with out an issue when she found cheese in it. My friend went over to the beverage station and asked for a bigger cup for water and Kai just stared at her and after awhile got the cup but sat it down on the other side of the counter from where my friend was standing and then tells her oh I put it there you can get it. Subtle but hella rude. I tried I really love this place but I just can't with this this rude ass person they just kill it for me. I love Oaklandia!! I haven't had the chance to try this new location due to me working in the city during the weekdays but I finally got a day off and thankfully they were open! This location is located in downtown. I got a little lost and had to do a full lap to find this place. I easily found street metered parking but can understand the difficulty of finding parking when it's a bit more crowded. I get the same thing every time I go. The sausage, egg, cheese, breakfast sandwich with chipotle aïoli, and a blended caramel frappe. The breakfast sandwich was so hot and fresh when I ate it, but I felt like it did fall apart a little bit easier compared to the sandwiches I've had at their old location. My caramel frappe didn't really have much flavor to it but maybe it was an off day. Oaklandia is still my favorite place to get breakfast sandwiches, I just wish they were open on weekends . I was also super impressed with how big this location was, loved the aesthetic of it! read more

I enjoyed a very tasty sandwich here one morning. They have a very vast menu with specials written on various parts of the restaurant and they're easy to miss. The restaurant is large with so much seating it's hard to imagine it filled up, but I came on a very quiet late morning so maybe it does fill up. There's magic in that damn kitchen. This place is so so so good this is my second time leaving a review. My first few experiences going here were amazing. I highly recommend the Tiger Eye because it's made with love However, today was an odd day. I am used to kind and warm energy from the workers. However, one of the cashiers completely threw me off guard with so much attitude and almost like she had hate in her heart. Already having a rough day, I was looking forward to another delicious Tiger Eye to pick up my day (yes, it's that good). But my simple question of "are you able to make the Tiger Eye iced?" turned into her giving me the ugliest look and responded "well that's up to you whether you want it iced or not" which completely did not answer my question. My immediate response was to apologize for asking the question and just be extra kind because she may have been having a bad day. She then asked me what size. Apparently saying your "largest size please" could be upsetting and she threw more shade and rudely said "8oz or 16oz." I feel discouraged to coming back now because that interaction really got me emotional as I walked out with tears, wondering what did I do wrong and what did I deserve to deserve that kind of mean encounter... read more

We decided to try this place out since it was so close to work. Located in the Ask Bldg replacing what used to be Specialty's. The interior looks pretty much the same. We were greeted by the employees, except the one taking our order was a bit off putting. She seemed annoyed with us and was not very friendly. Once we placed our order we waited about 10- 15 mins before our food was ready. We both ordered pastrami sandwiches. It comes on ciabatta bread but tbh the bread did not seem like ciabatta. The texture was different. Super light and airy it honestly was not filling which was strange. I thought the sandwich was decent. It was pretty small for what you pay for. I never ever finish a sandwich I get anywhere. I gobbled this one up and did not feel stuffed so I know it was way small lol. Stopped in today while in town for a conference. I chose this spot out of many options based on other reviews and the fact that it's locally owners- see picture for the sticker they add to went drink made. I tried the Pink Panther and the Black and Brown Latte. Both were delicious, but the Black and Brown was the winner! Seriously out of this world good!!! So yummy I might go back tomorrow! They don't have decaf coffee which was a surprise to my friend. I also tried the honey walnut scone and it was moist and flavorful! Food was fantastic, minus one star because they didn't have any decaf coffee, :( We got a hot chocolate, which was too sweet for me, and a decaf chai, which was bland compared to my expectations. Service was plenty fast and friendly on a holiday when we were the only ones in there. The space is huge, it almost feels like a cafeteria, but everything is fresh made on site, and the quality is very high. We had a spinach, egg and cheese sandwich on a croissant with cilantro cream sauce, which I loved. My partner thought the sauce was excessive/too rich. We also had a morning bun (a little too sweet for me, but the pastry was perfect), and a hot cross bun, which was outstanding. We took a flaky apple turnover for later, and I'm saving it for dessert tonight. This place is close, I plan to go back for the croissants if nothing else. Hopefully they'll have decaf so I can try a coffee. read more

Oakland is lacking in decent breakfast meeting places Downtown. This one's pretty good. Friendly staff, great modern interior decor. Mr Espresso coffee here is decent. I had a veggie croissant breakfast sandwich and Inwas hoping it would be light be was too mayonnaise creamy to me. Too filling. I thought it would be healthier tasting. Still, I look forward to trying everything else they have here. I recommend that the veggie croissant be a lighter, healthier option, maybe use olive oil instead of mayo. Will give this a few more tries because I really like the staff here who are warm and friendly. read more

Had a chance to check out Oaklandia's new location in Downtown Oakland and the place is amazing. The decor is just beautiful, very tasteful. The service was excellent and the food was incredible! I ate a chicken sandwich and the meat was perfectly seasoned and cooked. The bread was soft and flavorful. My cousin enjoyed a vegan salad and it looked delicious, all fresh ingredients. I had the opportunity to speak with the business owner and she's just a good person with an amazing business philosophy. Lastly, I also enjoyed the music, I literally heard most of my favorites while there. I'll definitely be back with friends and/or my laptop and cannot wait. read more
