OMGosh! I had the best sandwich and the best experience today at Oaklandia. I had some business to take care of in Oakland today. I put too much time on the parking meter and had time to spare. I found a place that served soup, salad, sandwiches and pastries. Being downtown prices are always inflated. I was absolutely thrilled to get a turkey, bacon, cheddar, avocado, tomato, and spinach sandwich on a great bread that was made in-house. The sandwich was made warm and tasted amazing. The space was really nice. The menu board was bright, colorful and easy to read. Prices were surprisingly affordable. My sandwich plus the tip was $16.00! If you're ever on Clay/12th (I think) look for the shop. It's right on the corner!

This is an upgrade from what it was before (Specialtys). New look, new owner, new food...Nom Nom. After being forced back to in office work a lot has changed in downtown Oakland. Many of the places I used to eat are gone and the options aren't so many, or the options just aren't the most fulfilling. This was a good change to see/experience. The food & drink are very well made and tastes great. The interior is very well put together. comfortable and a good place to relax, work, eat or drink. Giselle is a great employee here and only adds to this place. Cheers!

Decided to stop by during lunch to buy a sandwich. The experience was a bit underwhelming to be honest. I previously purchased a delicious sandwich that one of the baristas recommended, based on what I told him I had a taste for. He told me he had one better and it was yummy! Btw, this was the first and only time I ordered from this place and was able to ask questions and get great recommendations. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of it and when I described it, she had no clue what I was talking about. Additionally, when I asked to purchase just half a sandwich, the total actually came up to the same amount of a full sized portion....because they add a side of greens. Like sheesh, y'all gonna make sure y'all get the money, huh? So I just ended up ordering a full sized sandwich with chips...since if I ordered the half size, I would be paying the same amount regardless. And it was slightly okay. Not at all what I was looking for and my sandwich still contained onions, even though I asked for no onions. That being said, The combination of high prices, and workers who can't be bothered to make recommendations or better yet, know the menu, leaves a lot to be desired. This location is in the lobby of my building, so it's convenient to go during lunch...but going forward, I will just walk across the street to another coffee/sandwich shop. Disappointing.

    Matcha clumps :/

Pastries aren't bad but the drinks seem to consistently take a long time to prepare. Have had a couple regular lattes that were fine but not great. Have also had dirty matcha lattes and the matcha is not prepared correctly. It's like they are not whisking it because there are clumps which I've never seen in any other matcha drink.

Great vibes, great food && great service! My order was taken and as soon as they received they started working on it! It was so quick and fast! The sandwich was so delicious and flavorful. 5/5 for me

Matcha latte large and outdoor tables
    Sydney J.

I was walking by and decided to order an organic matcha latte with whole milk. The large is only $5.15 before tip, which is reasonably priced compared to some of the other cafes in the area. By default it's hot, I didn't think to ask if they can put ice in it. The drink was done within 2 mins. I wish the matcha was a bit stronger as it was mostly sweet and I felt the milk overshadowed a lot of the tea taste, but otherwise it was decent. Currently for fall, Oaklandia also offers a seasonal maple matcha, pumpkin pie latte, and hazelnut toffee latte. There was ample indoor seating with varying table and chair heights and types, and the music wasn't too loud but you may be able to lightly hear some other patrons' conversations. There are also some outdoor tables spaced far apart, so that you can enjoy your food or drinks outdoors. On a weekday, there doesn't seem to be much traffic outside by the shop so it's fairly peaceful outdoors.

Went here to meet up with a friend - perfect place for catching up, chatting, or getting some work done! Plenty of indoor seating with some tables outside. Very large interior and pretty comfortable chairs. Plenty of outlets. It's in a really nice part of Oakland within walking distance of Lake Merritt, which I HIGHLY recommend going to for an afternoon stroll. The spinach ricotta croissant ($4.25) was pretty good but would have been better warmed up. Drinks and pastries are reasonably priced, especially compared to a $10 Starbucks matcha latte.

I love there soups here and they change daily (except Friday)! I've tried a few items but the BLT is my favorite sandwich. Not pictured but if the soup is vegetable get it!! The owner is super kind! Very large cafe with plenty of seating and tables.

Oaklandia Cafe & Bakery opened where Specialty Cafe was. Refurnished the space to have spacious seating and an ambitious bakery, cafe, & eats destination. Offerings: breakfast, desserts, salads, sandwiches, tea, smoothies, blended coffee, coffee, pastries... Drink: tiger eye (m.,4.85) -chai latte with a shot of expresso. Smooth tasting, definitely an eye opening. -pastries, sandwiches looked tempting. Not something i usually eat so passed. Drips: -quick service. Coffee ready in minutes. Plenty of seating available... -lotsa arty ambience on walls....

We had a breakfast sandwich and a smoothie, both were delicious! Also loved the vibe to enjoy the food and have a convo.

We ordered the wicked buns, Saigon give you wings, garlic noodle and the bo luc lac. The food was out very quickly. Wicked Buns: The wicked buns were quite good. Truly cannot go wrong with some fried bao buns! Chicken Wings: We really enjoyed the chicken wings as well. The fish sauce gives the wings a nice sweetness and makes them quite addicting. Garlic Noodles: The garlic noodles had a nice char flavor to it. We could see them set it on fire from the bar, although we felt that the garlic noodles could have had a bit more salt and garlic in them. The shrimp also tasted frozen but they were still good. Bo Luc Lac: We enjoyed the bo luc lac as well, it was cooked well and quite tender. It was very flavorful to the point it made us wish we had ordered the dirty rice with it. Cocktails: For drinks I asked the bartender what he recommended and offered to make me something. It wasn't off-menu, but he made the Pillow Talks which had gin, calamansi and egg white in it. It had a nice flavor profile and balance and creaminess to the drink. I also ordered the Pandanmonium which is a pandan old fashioned which I really enjoyed. The drinks were quite fairly priced as well which I really appreciated. Overall, I think the portion sizes can be a little small for the price, but the food is delicious and great. The drinks are also great and I would definitely come back for them!

Eventually I figured it out - they have menus at one of the counters and as I was looking one over, a man came up and asked what I would like. I decided to keep it simple and just ordered a small cheese pizza to go. It wasn't anything mindblowing, but it definitely hit the spot (and for a good price too). It kind of reminded me of shakshuka in terms of spices but the beans almost tasted meaty. I liked it so much that I brought it home, and my partner said it tasted like refried beans (though he did have them cold). The crusty warm bread was perfect for dipping, and I ended up not being able to finish it. The chai was pretty milky; there was a tea bag and the spices weren't very strong. Then again, I'm used to Indian chais. I would pass on the chai. There was basically no one else there on a Friday afternoon during off-peak hours. It was dimly lit and kind of chilly because the door was left open, so it wasn't the most comfortable cafe ambiance. The wifi did work well though and I would come back to try more Eritrean and Ethiopian food.

By the time we had actually received our food, almost an hour had passed. While we were waiting, a few other servers eventually joined, but service was still pretty bare for us and we never received refills on water or plates to eat off of when we received our food. I understand that staffing and a backup in the kitchen are out of the staff's control, but it would've definitely helped for us to know in advance how long to expect to wait to align our expectations and arrange our plans for the day. Would advise giving customers a quick heads up/warning because that on its own would've made a big difference. As for the actual food, we ordered the mac trio with elote mac, chicken pot pie mac, and kogi short rib mac (for an extra fee). The elote mac was the best and most flavorful, the short rib mac was okay but not amazing or worth the extra money, and the chicken pot pie mac was very bland/flavorless and didn't have much chicken in it. The food didn't feel like it warranted the wait time and because of that I would not return.

This was me and my husband's first time at the restaurant and the food here was excellent…read moreeverything was very good and flavorful. I gave it to stars because the service was really bad. Our waitress took very long to even acknowledge us, didn't person herself to be very friendly, and lacked any attentiveness to us as customers. We had to ask other people for things like refills on our drinks, condiments, etc. She didn't ever really try to check to see how things were going after the food was served and we had to ask someone else to pay. Unfortunately considering this experience my husband doesn't want to go back and I hate that for us because the food was really good.
