For those complaining about wait times - this restaurant (like many others) continues to deal with staffing issues. The staff do the best they can!! The outdoor area is great in summer, and we just learned it'll be insulated for the cooler months. We went last week over Columbus Day and everything was great. Ambiance is nice but you can't eat ambiance. Waited 73 minutes for our pizza - not even a special wood fired just regular. No explanation. No upfront warning "pizza will be a long wait." Had to flag down and ask what was going on after nearly an hour. Received An apology as pizza served "thanks for your patience." Ok... how about you comp us our soda? Send us home with a slice of cheesecake? If you can't handle the volume, add an oven or tell customers upfront it's a long wait. Pizza was NOT ok - Definitely not 73 minute wait worthwhile. One side badly burnt crust, middle was soggy. We asked for half the pie with onions and peppers ... they put on entire pizza. Almost no spinach, three tiny pieces of broccoli and looked like a giant can of olives all over one side. Some pieces had almost no cheese. It was prepared with zero care, sloppy and improper order. Caesar salad was so soaked in dressing, had to order a bowl of plain chopped lettuce to mix it up. Owners seated in the bar holding court, oblivious to the kitchen back up, not helping staff nor checking on customers. Brio in Phoenicia is a longer drive but totally worth it. Disappointing Experience Despite a Few Highlights I came in to try the wood-fired pizzas and ended up ordering more than planned. I started with the Margherita pizza, expecting a classic combo of tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and basil. Being from Long Island, I found it strange that they used raw tomato slices on top as if I ordered a pizza with tomato as a topping. While the crust was nicely done, the rest of the pizza was bland and didn't suit my taste. On the bright side, the boneless buffalo wings were a hit--perfectly spicy and paired really well with the bleu cheese sauce. The shrimp tempura was also great: light, crispy, and flavorful. I had a beer that tasted like a mix of apple cider and beer (can't recall the name), but it complemented the wings nicely. One major issue was the service around my cheeseburger order. I asked for cheddar cheese, expecting the usual yellow cheddar, but received white cheddar instead. When I asked about it, another server stepped in with a really unprofessional attitude, insisting over and over that it "tastes the same" rather than just answering a simple yes or no to whether they had yellow cheddar. My original server eventually came back and echoed the same dismissive tone after hearing the story from the other girl. I felt like just sending the burger back and paying for it out of frustration. I ended up keeping it, gave half to my spouse, took one bite, and regretted not giving her the whole thing. The burger was underseasoned and just not enjoyable. I ended up tossing what was left. The view of the mountains from the window was a nice touch, and the atmosphere overall was pleasant--but food consistency and staff attitude (from certain people) really need work. I was warned by multiple people to not come here, YET, because there was new ownership and they were working out kinks... well I chose to find out for myself and boy did I find out. It was a Saturday night at 7pm on Columbus Day weekend. The restaurant, inside and outside were both packed. The restaurant itself is very cute, and fitting for the mountain town that it is in. My friends and I were craving pizza and bar food and just wanted a quick place to eat before heading to the distillery down the road. We ordered our food at 7:20pm.... My soup came out quick and was delicious.... 8:20pm comes around and we still haven't gotten anything else we ordered. Finally I get up and approach the owner, who seemed to not care much at all that we'd been sitting there for an hour. After I explained what we ordered he did go to try to figure out where our food ticket was because at that point I assumed our food wasn't even put in. As we watched the staff nervously try to figure out what was going on, no one was coming to our table to explain anything. I am a very patient, understanding person when I go out to eat, especially because I have worked in busy bars and restaurants, I know first hand how things can go on a busy Saturday night. I was specifically in town and chose to eat at Oakley's because I am creating content for the local tourism board to promote businesses!! It's extremely frustrating to go somewhere where I am supposed to be capturing content, and not be able to do that. I don't want to leave a place and be miserable, I want to leave a business and be happy with my experience so that I can share it in a positive manner with people on the internet. I'll give this place benefit of the doubt because they are under new ownership, but what I hated was that we barely got an apology. The owner told our server we could get a round of drinks for free to make up for the chaos. I guess something is better than nothing, but the fact that the owner himself couldn't even stop at our table to apologize is pretty pathetic. We saw very little remorse from the owner and staff, it was more so them wanting us to feel bad for them because it was "so busy" and a "holiday weekend". Maybe don't fill every table in your restaurant then ? That's what a wait list is for... If you own a restaurant and know that it's busy and things are backed up, take it upon yourself to go up to each table and explain that to people then. It's really not that hard to be honest and apologetic. Why are you packing your restaurant, stressing out your kitchen and servers and then making people sit there for 1.5 hours miserable, only to serve them undercooked, flavorless food. On top of it, the men's bathroom was DISGUSTING. And then as we were leaving the owner is sitting outside having a pow wow with his staff literally outside of the entrance door. Very unprofessional and just an overall absolutely horrible experience. Literally in my top 3 most horrible restaurant experiences and I eat out A LOT. I truly hope that the ownership gets it together and this place turns itself around, because the potential is there! Had the owner just shown that he cared at all about how upset we were, I might not be leaving this review. Pizza and beer selection was great! You can sit inside or out... but definitely pick outside if it's a nice night. It gets very busy on the weekends, so plan ahead. We had 2 of their vegetarian pizzas and they were delicious. The pitcher of beer seemed expensive but since we couldn't even finish it, so it was a lot for the money. read more

The dining area overlooks the kitchen where the firewood oven is. There's also outdoor dining as well as an enclosed outdoor dining area. The guests appeared to be mostly post-mountain skiers and families. Service (4/5): The establishment was very busy but there was plenty of staff members on the floor assisting. The workers were all very polite and quick to get us anything we needed. The pizza took 50 minutes so I'd recommend getting some appetizers to hold you over. Food (3/5): The bottom crust of the pizza was soggy so the bites were unsatisfying. The buffalo chicken pizza was delicious but ultimately, I've had much better pizza elsewhere. You showed no remorse, nor intent to address faulty food preparation practices involving food-related toxins, despite liability for knowingly continuing to produce, & serve them. You publicly disregarded dangers without any indication of addressing your unsafe practices at this establishment. Meanwhile, you have nearly $200 of my hard-earned cash! I take that very personally! I also take it personally that I would have been poisoned, if I trusted that your food was safe to consume sans vigilant inspection. I may have suffered indeterminate, potentially life-long detrimental health consequences. That qualifies as extremely personal. As anticipated, and based upon your past irresponsible retorts to legitimate Yelps, your reply is fraught with excuses which make no sense. They are carelessly tossed into your wood-fired pizza oven within aluminum take-out tins, presumably to save more time and money. It does not resemble, nor qualify as wing sauce. And as previously stated, your blue cheese dressing is more-salty than Ontario's Goderich mine. Despite your denial regarding massive sodium dosing in nearly everything you serve, it remains a fact with undeniable potential of severe health consequences. I wish I was kidding. Wife and I ordered wings the other night, and they come out dripping in red goo. Never one to turn away food, I tried them anyway. Something's not right, I thought to myself. They were sticky sweet and tangy. I asked the waitress if maybe she ordered the wrong kind of wings. Nope, she says, I keep telling them not to use ketchup, but they won't listen to me. She offers to take them back and have them redone without ketchup (what a novel idea). I concur, and ten minutes later she returns with a new basket of wings - covered in ketchup. The poor thing looked at me with a mix of shame and fear in her eyes. "I'm so sorry, she said. He insists on making them this way. Maybe you can take them home and rinse them off?" Fabulous wood-fired pizza! Stopped by for a late lunch and shared a large (16") margarita pizza and garden salad. Quick pleasant service, including free soft drink refills and several check-ins to see if everything was OK (it was!). Decor is rustic and inviting with a long bar and plenty of tables. We're NY City natives with plenty of pizza gorging experience under our ever-expanding belts, and thought Oakley's pizza was among the very best we've ever had. Nicely charred bubbly crust, fresh cheese and a scattering of basil leaves on top. Simple perfection, at a reasonable price. As we left we spoke to proprietor George who was sitting outside on the spacious deck. George told us that he had reduced opening days to four days per week (Thursday through Sunday) for the time being, in order to give the staff a chance to rest up during these trying times. I should have ordered a pizza. My wife did and it was fantastic. Marguerita pizza. Love the wood fired flavor. We had fried pickles as an appetizer. These were good. My daughter and I both had pork schnitzel. The pork was good. The broccoli was great. The rice.... Well, it was both over cooked and cool... not even room temperature. So it was a holiday weekend and this place was busy and they feel very under staffed. If this is normal plan to wait for your food. That said the servers work their butts off and were great. It felt like the kitchen may have been the issue. That said, if I wasn't in a rush, I would come back just for the pizza. My guess is the rice is a fluke due to an understaffed kitchen. Been going to Oakley's for 20+ years. We love their chicken wings, wood fired personal pizzas and salads. What makes them really good is their customer service. Vinny, one of the owners comes around to each table. If he doesn't deliver your order, he's checking if you need anything else to complement your meal. We eat at Oakley's Place every time we visit Margaretville. I hesitate to share my true opinion because I don't want to create long, long lines to wait for a table but... it needs to be said: Oakley's has pizza better than the local pizzerias in my Brooklyn neighborhood. The word "better" does not capture the superior experience of eating this pizza. But for Brooklyn reference, it would be as if Grimaldis Pizza (the one by the Brooklyn Bridge) and Patsy's Pizza had a pizza baby. They have a fire wood oven and apparently, absolutely KNOW how to use that thing to achieve perfection in a crispy crust pizza. The sauce is delicious, neither too sweet or too tangy. The cheese stays on the pizza, not sliding away as you bite into it, and they are generous with the pepperonis which cover the entire pie. This once delicious pizza restaurant just changed hands to become more of a "grill" with new menu items, but the new owners' decision to remake the pizza is, in a word, a disaster. First, they have re-defined what a "large" pizza is. We ordered one for $24. 95 expecting the usual size. What we got was about a foot in diameter. The dough was thick, soggy, undercooked and very salty. It was just a flat bread. Do they really think people don't know the difference between real pizza dough and a flat bread? The Margarita that we ordered had hardly any cheese, just underripe tomatoes and basil "flavor" (I did not see any physical basil). It was inedible. They gave us a $7 dollar credit on the pizza but we were still paying $17 for very poor quality and quantity. The salad was big and good but with commercial dressing you could get at the supermarket. I visited most recently in August of 2020 (during COVID) and was truely impressed with the new outdoor seating areas, distancing between tables, thorough cleaning between customers and the sanitation they practiced. Oakley's is still going strong and pumping out great food at reasonable prices. You might not expect pizza in the Catskills to be anything special -- but at Oakley's you'd be dead wrong. Their pizza (like alot of their menu) is cooked on their wood fire, fueled by locally harvested wood for an authentic mountain flavor. Wash it down with one of their numerous tap beers or a drink from the bar - and its just awesome! I also really recommend their wood-fired chicken sandwiches and wood- fired burgers. Very good! Seated quickly and service was great! I can't remember our waitresses name but she had a black and white spiderweb shirt. We ordered wings, sweet potato fries, garlic knots and a bacon Mac and cheese pizza. My boyfriend said the wings were a little dry but over all very good! The pizza was amazing and worth the wait (which wasn't that long to begin with) the staff kept apologizing for the (not long) wait. The garlic knots/ sauce were great as were the fries! Really nice spot to casually eat. Stopped in two nights in a row while in the area for a weekend getaway and I will say I found their comfort food (i.e. pizza, burgers) better than the speciality food like pasta. First night I stopped in I had spaghetti and meatball and it was just ok. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't amazing like you get an an authentic Italian restaurant. Unfortunately, all of my experiences with Oakley's have been infuriating. I've been there several times, and each time I have left before ordering because of the insane wait time. Don't come here if it's past 6pm- don't even bother. Wait for tables is pretty long, and only once you're seated do they tell you how long you'll need to wait for your food. Tonight, it was 1hr + 45 minutes for every item on the menu except two salads. The one time I actually got the food, it was fine, but not worth two hours of waiting for. I hate leaving bad reviews, but each time I've been here there was long wait times and unpleasant atmosphere, and I was left hungry and frustrated. read more
