My grandma's old windup watch has been sitting around for ages with its crystal detached, and the brackets where the watch band attaches were in need of repair. I took it to Oaks and asked them about the repairs. The fellow looked at it and said the movement was good enough and that the repairs would take about a week and cost $30. Wow, that was a pleasant surprise. The next day Oaks called to say the watch was ready. The repairs look great and cost exactly as estimated. They even cleaned up the watch before returning it to me. Not being one who'd ever dealt much with jewelry, I was a bit of a rookie when it came time to deal with engagement rings and all that goes along with that. Oaks was the place for me. When trusting someone with valuables, family heirlooms and big decisions, a place that has been there for 67 years gives one a sense of comfort. This is a family run business, with just the right mix of old and new, from the staff above the glass to what is displayed behind it. Our ring had been in the family for a while, and had to go through a bit of a transformation to become exactly what we wanted. They presented myriad options and recommendations to us, and were patient and knowledgable every step of the way. They put our diamond under a magnifying glass and showed us it's unique marks, and explained the cutting process to us, and made us feel comfortable and sure of ourselves in the most sincere way. We recently had an engagement ring made by the lovely people at Oaks after getting a sparkling recommendation for them from some family friends who have been taking their jewelry and repair needs to Oaks for years. My future mother in law referred me to this place for a ring guard on my engagement ring that I got from Zales at the Hilltop Shopping Center in Richmond. (I tried sizing my ring THREE times at Zales and they still not get it right. But that is another story for which I have already written a review about. Horrible!) Anyway the woman at Oaks was so nice and helpful. I got a ring guard for $3.00!!!!!!!!!!! It's great! She also said if I wanted to get it resized in the future it wouls be $25. Now I wish my fiance could have bough the ring from this place. It would have probably been cheaper and with great customer service. So I went to Zales afterwards to have my diamond inspected (I have to do that every 6 months Inconvenient to say the least) and the girl asked if i wanted to resize it. I gave her a polite no since it is not her fault and let her know that Zales already failed to get it right 3 times and each time it took at least 2-3 weeks. How can a diamond be my best friend if I don't get to spend any time with it? I know I have small hands and slender fingers and my ring size is rare and it's hard to get the ring over the knuckles because they stick out more than the rest of my fingers, etc. But I have a feeling Oaks would get it right the first time. They seem like they really know what they are doing all the time, which is more than what I can say about Zales. read more

I went there because I had lost a cubic zirconia on one of my silver rings. The lady told me why it may have fallen, gave me a quote and took my number. Less than a week later, I had a message telling me it was ready for me to pick up. They charged me $40 (which was what they quoted) and had polished. It was super shiny and looked great ! I honestly can't even tell which stone had gone missing. The lady who gave me my ring back was also super nice. I am glad I discovered this "gem", with really friendly and professional staff who offer great service at a very reasonable rate. read more

girlfriend tried her sterling silver rings on a different finger than normal and while it seemed ok when she first put it on it was a little snug and over the course of the evening began to swell -the more it swelled the snugger it got and so on. after spending the night trying every trick google could offer to get it off we ended up going into Oak's early Saturday morning and they were able to cut it off easily and cleanly; so much so that they were able to repair it and return it in like new condition for only $25. it did take a week to get back which might seem a while for some but she was in no hurry so no biggie one way or the other and they buffed a wonderful shine on it that was better then when we had it cut off. staff was pleasant, helpful, and understanding. additionally they had a wide variety of jewelry at a wide variety of prices (50 bucks to several thousand). i'd definitely return to get a piece repaired/cleaned or to buy something new. read more

This is a multi-generational family business; they are highly skilled professionals who hold themselves to the highest of standards. Being a local Albany business, they are also friendly and informal. I would not consider going anywhere else. On top of all of this, you cannot beat their prices. This weekend I stopped by because my watch strap broke and the watch hit the street and quit running. They replaced the pin in the strap and after a few adjustments, got the watch ticking again. I've been coming to Oaks for years for jewelry repair, renovations, and advice.Can't believe a place like this exists -- did I wander into a fairy tale? Their work is so good they must have elves in the workshop! Well maybe not, because the jewelers look like ordinary mortals though customer service is extraordinary -- they are incredibly polite, helpful, and willing to spend time with you, whether it be for replacing a Timex watch battery or renovating a pearl necklace. I brought in some earring with dodgy clasps ... good as new now, and, amazingly,no charge. Their prices are always reasonable, so I don't bother with comparison shopping. I've got my daughter coming to Oaks now -- adding her 5 star experience with them to mine = a 10 star rating. Came here to repair my Skagen watch and was not disappointed. Though the place was crowded, one of the repairmen immediately came over to me and fixed my watch band on the spot for free. I then asked him if he could replace the crystal because of scratches and dings in the glass. He did the whole repair in 3 days (including ordering the part) and only charged $15. They don't even sell Skagen watches but did a fantastic job. Would highly recommend this place for watch repair and friendly service. read more
