Classic southern restaurant, always worth a stop, with great short order menu and meat and three plates. Daily specials too. Depending on day's veggie choices, I often go for the 4 veggie plate. Especially love the greens and squash casserole. Cornbread is excellent. Expect a busy place; you seat yourself. But the wait staff is prompt and efficient. Fair prices! It's a cool historic place, has been in business at this downtown corner for decades.

Bogus fee added to my check without notifying me before I placed an order.

The food is very good and would get them a five-star, but them slamming my check with a 10% inflation fee gets a star knocked off. The only place a notice about this fee is posted is at the register, which is a bit too late. The notification about the fee needs to be at the point of entry, at the table, or on the menu. Many restaurants are starting to try to slide these bogus charges in. Look at your checks closely.

Excellent lunch! They were very busy but service was prompt and courteous. The tarragon chicken salad was good but could have used more tarragon for my taste. Baked sweet potato was like dessert! You get a lot of food for your dollar and won't go home hungry. read more

While the staff is highly efficient and courteous the food is typical southern over cooked, fried, canned fare. Breakfast is safe but while there are a few fresh items most of the greens, beans, and corn are canned foods. I met there with a friend and after our coffee I noted not just one roach but two then three then four. I'll most likely never go there again. I'm not sure why, being from this state, so many people think there's anything special about canned green beans and food fried to the verge of being confused with tree bark. read more

I haven't visited the resturant in Dalton yet.. though Oakwood cafe catered to the business I work for. The food was so delicious!! And my shift had cold leftovers! I will be taking my family to eat here!! read more

We specialize in homemade Southern cuisine! Each meal starts with your choice of a wide selection of some of the best meats around, including Georgia's finest BBQ, and all are served with the perfect complement of your choice of homemade southern vegetables and sides. Our hand-battered chicken tenders and 12-hour pot roast are two of our most popular dishes. Our breakfast is fantastic including locally made grits and fresh sausage from Covington, GA. Use serve fresh ground Jittery Joe's coffee from Athens, GA as well. One taste and you will understand why we say with confidence, "If you don't feel like family, let us know."

History

Established in 2004.

The 1940s were a time of great change in the United States. It was in this environment that Johnny and Mary Metcalf took over a 30-year-old diner called Oakwood Cafe and moved it to Cuyler Street in Dalton, Georgia, where it still operates today. Since the day they opened Oakwood in 1946, not much has remained the same in America, but one thing holds true: people enjoy a great homemade meal in a family friendly restaurant. Oakwood Cafe provides the ideal setting for both.

Meet the Business Owner: Kasey C.

Kasey is married to Julie Carpenter and is the father of four children (Camp, Duncan, Sidey, and Ellis). He graduated from Dalton High School and UGA. Kasey is proud to have reopened the Oakwood Cafe in 2004, opened Oakwood Cafe at the Market in 2006 with Ricky Camp, and opened Oakwood Cafe at Dalton State in 2013.

Husband and I just happened to pick this great place to have dinner 5/7/2019... What a treasure for Dalton !! He had the Pot Roast and Sweet Potato.. I had the French Dip and Rings... Outstanding. And as we were eating I noticed a Lions Club sign. And having meet the Incoming International Director for Lions International at our 11B2 Convention a couple months back. WE had to ask when the Club had their meeting... LO and Behold they were meeting at that time. I remember going to the Oakwood (in its earlier incarnation) when I was very young, with my parents. Although there are now new owners and a remodeled interior, the ambience is the same - comfortable, small town. The service is excellent and the food is delicious. The menu options change from day to day - though some items are always on the menu. The Oakwood is one of my favorite places to go for a hamburger and fries.
