Serving sizes are small (probably just by American standards) and they're perpetually out of half their foods, but what they do have is great. The waitress was nice but rushed from table to table. The place stays packed (with an older crowd and a couple children usually) and so there's a steady noise, but it isn't loud or disturbing. There was also a "supply inflation " charge added to my bill- only $1.56 so not a big deal, but still. I guess that's better than continually changing prices, but it feels sneaky to just tack it on. read more

Stopped at the Oakwood Cafe. Yelp had them listed for brunch, but they stopped serving breakfast at 11:00 AM. The food was okay, no gravy on the pot roast? Maybe I was disappointed because there was no brunch! read more

We're in town just for one night and wanted some good BBQ and stumbled upon this gem! Great food. Attentive, sweet staff. Amazing atmosphere of locals and travelers alike. I got the BBQ pork plate and my husband got the brisket - both were delicious. We tried the onion rings, squash casserole, corn casserole, fried okra, and potato salad - highly recommend all of them. The corn casserole is different than the norm we're used too and we loved it! We'll be back if we ever find ourselves in the area again. Their food is usually good, though today it might have ruined it for me for a while. Ordered the buffalo melt and grilled chicken tender, my plate was cold - and the side of honey mustard wasn't properly closed so it spilt everywhere, the plates, the bag - you name it. Peach cobbler seemed to be a little old, or maybe just sitting out for a while, a can of dog food would it looked more appetizing than this. The service is great, they're friendly, they're nice and their drive thru is convenient. Hopefully the negatives aren't the norm for them since I really liked this place. read more

Hubby and I were mid-way on a road trip and found this through an online search as we were driving through the area...although I was really wanting fried chicken, I settled for meatloaf, as it was Wednesday's special...glad that it was! The serving was so much that our dog had a small helping of leftovers! I also had the cheesy squash casserole, as did hubby. It was delicious and homemade, as was the corn casserole. Because I was starving, I also ordered an extra side and decided on coleslaw...homemade as well...and a muffin of cornbread (no wonder our dog had some leftovers) We will be making this a regular stop when we travel through this area...and the waitstaff was super friendly and devoted to making their customers feel appreciated and happy to be there! Oakwood is a Dalton favorite. It has wonderful Pork chops. Homemade cobbler and banana pudding.

The food was excellent. The pulled pork is really good considering it isn't a BBQ restaurant. The chicken tenders were on point. The green beans were excellent, I didn't even have to salt them. Mac-N-Cheese was great. My only gripe is just a personal preference. I don't care for "dirty" mashed potatoes. I hate the texture of the peel. But, the potatoes themselves were excellent! Our server was named "Destiny." She was the best server I've had in quite a while. She knew the menu very well, and offered excellent recommendations. I'll definitely go back to The Oakwood Cafe next time I'm in Dalton, GA! read more

This Southern restaurant has been a Dalton establishment since 1946. Schools and businesses often cater from the restaurant, and the red brick décor and laid back ambiance renders the small town environment for familiar faces and local followings. The staff and clientele lacked diversity, however, in a geographic region that is undergoing rapid demographic change. Three of us came by for lunch, and it was an enjoyable experience underscored by large portions of food, relaxed atmosphere, and down to earth service. I managed to try the Pork and Quarter Chicken ($10.49) that came with BBQ pork, smoked chicken breast, soft baked bread, and a side of turnip greens and baked sweet potato. Their BBQ pork was phenomenal. It came with pointed bbq flavor, moist and tender meat, and firm jerky textures at the ends. The pork goes perfectly with their BBQ sauce, which tasted complex and smooth, including sweet and semi-spicy subtleties that made it enjoyable. I didn't enjoy the chicken breast as much. First, the serving was not the equivalent of a quarter chicken. Although the meat was easy to fork off, it also lacked moisture and the desired smoky flavor. I did, however, find their sides delicious, as the turnip greens added a lighter contrast to the plate, while the sweet potato was spot on as the finale. I also managed to try my friend's heaping serving of Small Baby Back Ribs ($8.99). His portions were humongous, and it took the three of us to help him finish it. Just like the BBQ pork, the ribs were mixed with tender and firm textures without the fall of the bones qualities. The taste was still phenomenal, so a small order will take anyone a long way. Service was spotty but we were never rushed to leave. The server was very kind to offer extra BBQ sauce, but we never saw her again after the food arrived at the table. Overall, the flavors were distinct, but quality-wise it did not measure up to my prior BBQ experiences in other regions of the country. Despite these limitations, this is still a must visit in Dalton. I would love to try their Pork Chops, Smoked Pork Loin, and Squash Casserole on my next visit. read more

Wonderful meal and great service. I especially liked the baked sweet potato with cinnamon butter on the side. The cornbread was accurately described as not overly sweet. I used the cinnamon butter on my cornbread and on my sweet potato, both great. I was able to eat the whole sweet potato, skin and all, since it was not over-baked , but the pulp was nice and soft. Unusual for this type of restaurant to have grilled salmon, but it was also nicely prepared. They also had catfish, tilapia and crab cakes available. Ate here on a Saturday nite after a long drive from Florida. No wait for a small table for two. I had the pot roast with squash casserole and cuke-tomato-onion salad for sides. Also a garden salad and a bowl of Brunswick stew. The latter was fantastic--best I've had in years. Then chocolate pie for dessert. Yummy ! Wife had pork chops and green beans. Service was friendly and attentive.This place seems like it has been there forever and is popular with locals .A good slice of small town America. Wow. I had been here before for lunch and dinner, but today was the first time having breakfast here. My husband and I got omelettes and we ordered the banana pancakes for our son (they are huge but we got 2 so we could taste 1 today). I'm usually picky about salsa, but absolutely loved this one. It was just the right flavor and spiciness. The pancakes were also fluffy and so delicious! I definitely recommend this place for breakfast. Stopped here for a to go order. Smoked brisket with greens, Cole slaw, and cornbread. Plus a 1/2 rack of ribs. The brisket was great! Tender and juicy. The greens were pretty good, not mushy like some places. Not thrilled with the cole slaw, it's minced and a bit sweet - not my preference - but good if you like sweet slaw. The cornbread was better than most. The ribs were tasty and fall-off-the-bone tender. Their BBQ sauce is tangy, slightly sweet, with a little heat. The staff was very friendly. This place is an institution. The service is always with a smile and makes you feel like family. They are happy to address any dietary restrictions as some of my family members have. A breakfast here about twice a week. The Oakwood plate is probably more food than one person can eat. The meat and three is always exceptional.The tilapia, blackened, is my favorite. This is an awesome Dalton tradition. Great tradition and fare served by wonderful people. Definitely a don't miss when in Dalton. This place should be on the National Historic buildings register. The carpet industry was practically born from here with the exchange of ideas and experiences over lunch and dinners at the Oakwood. I'm glad to see this Dalton tradition of awesome food, great service and good conversation continued into another generation. read more
