Good combination of items but for reasons that escape me, the Oakwood fare has become rather tedious (read: dull). Id like to see more variety in the way food is cooked and presented (not more menu items). Having said that, some folks like the same old thing. They may explain why some rate those locale highly. We stopped here on a random Saturday morning while driving from Chicago to Florida. We picked this place based on previous reviews. Breakfast was good. The menu was not huge, but the basics were covered and everything was reasonably priced. My daughter ordered a single pancake which was more than enough for her. I got an omelet- big and good. Let me start by saying this place was ridiculously crowded and it would have been nice if someone would have been available to seat people. This is the only reason I'm not giving a five star rating. Driving through Dalton GA. Stopped and ordered the fried chicken strips had choice of honey mustard and ranch. Enjoyed the good down home cooking. The cobbler was better than the pumpkin. Our sweet waiter Stephanie was priceless in helping with our choices.. We gave a scenario. If you had to choose the last dish in your life, which one would she choose? This place is just wonderful and you can tell right away by the amount of customers that are there at all times of the day. I tried the catfish and on another day I tried their daily meat and veggie specials, they were both awesome. Their Peach Cobbler is also really tasty, you need to try it out. Staff was friendly and accommodating. So make sure that you stop by this place. read more

What a great lunch! We had Joni as our waitress and that was just the beginning of our great experience. We had such a hard time narrowing down what we wanted to eat. Joni helped in that department and in the end we were all thrilled with our selections. I had the fried chicken tenders with Mac and cheese , collard greens, corn casserole and cornbread. My husband had the ribs Mac and Cheese and Collards and my bestie had the smoked chicken breast, mashed potatoes, corn casserole and Mac and Cheese. Southern as southern gets! As someone from the north, there were a lot of unfamiliar items on the menu for me such as black eyed peas and chicken liver, pretty interesting stuff. I ended up getting the smoked chicken wings with mac n cheese and green beans. The wings and mac were delicious, I ate all of it! The greens beans were quite mushy and overwhelmed with salt. As a cyclist, I was of course in search of a draft beer list and was disappointed to find none. I settled for water, but hint hint I'd LOVE some beer with my chicken wings next time I'm in town. read more

Oh. My. Goodness. I honestly believe this was one of the best meals I've ever had. Like everyone at my table, I got a meat and two veg. Pot roast, fried okra, and tomato-cucumber-onion salad. I ate every. single. bit. Best pot roast I have ever, ever had. The okra wasn't the typical frozen lumps, but tasted as good as mom's pan-fried. The veg salad had just the right amount of sweet vinegar. I'm going to drag everyone that I know to this place! Service was fantastic, too. Amazing place. Was in town for the weekend and was looking for a place to have lunch. Saw all the great reviews on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Great little cafe. Loved the brick exposed walls. The service was quick. We had our food in less than 5 min after ordering. Our server was polite and personable. The food was amazing. I had the grilled chicken. It was moist and flavorful. The banana pudding was fresh and homemade. Delicious. The best part of the meal was the bill. My husband and I ate for less than $20 and left satisfied. Great choice. Stopped in for some breakfast this morning while visiting family in Rocky Face. Was pleasantly surprised that Eggs Benedict was on the menu. They had two varieties, a southern take with biscuits & gravy and the traditional English muffin method. I chose the traditional...also chose a side order of hash browns. Nice & tasty, I ordered the eggs cooked medium, but they were a tad bit over medium and not quite as runny as I would have liked, but overall the dish was tasty and filling. I only give this 3 Stars because there was a fly in the hashbrowns. I understand that sometimes things like this happen, and it was pretty hard to spot, but having an experienced person at the pass pays off in the long run. Fried chicken livers, fried green tomatoes, squash casserole, pinto beans, greens, cube steak, mac n cheese, pot roast, coleslaw, mashed potatoes...let's talk about solid down home southern cooking for a party of three. Lunchtime here on a Tuesday afternoon was hopping. Menu selections delivered just what we were looking for and the sweet tea glass stayed full. Everything we ordered had a solid home cooked flavor that wasn't over salted...which has been the norm when dining out (in our experience). My girlfriend and I stopped in Dalton on a recent road trip and were happy to find (with a little Yelp Help) this home cookin' gem. Despite our rolling in just before closing time, the service was friendly and the food was great. We both enjoyed the turkey and dressing (she's a vegetarian, but it was so good she changed teams for the night) and the creamed corn was especially good. My only regret was not having room for the desserts, which sounded amazing. We'll definitely be back! read more

My husband and I ate here during the few days we were in Dalton the last week of October. We like to try local restaurants as much as possible. I'd say this is the most "home-cookin'" style we got! I grew up in the Midwest, so Southern cooking seems to have many similarities. Unfortunately, I no longer have much of a Midwestern palate. I don't like mushified veggies; I like my crisp and slightly breathing still! I'm not big on lots of salt and pepper, and I'm not into lots of bacon grease, pork fat or butter. And, I'm not a big BBQ fan! We ordered by selecting the number of meats and veggies we wanted. This was a new ordering process for us. And then the food came out on plates, with little cups on them. A cup of this, a cup of that, and yet another cup. That was a new serving method as well! I was happy here (except for the gray, mushy, wide green beans). I really enjoyed my smoked chicken breast that wasn't too smokey and was still tender inside. The mashed taters were good. And the huge piece of coconut cake was yummy! (I loved the tiny coconut flakes, but I had to scrap lots of frosting off because it was tooooo sweet.) My husband found BBQ perfection with the pork he had. He still loves mushified veggies so he ate my green beans as well! And the peach cobbler he got was everything I imagined a peach cobbler in Georgia to be - fresh peaches and just the right sweetening and cinnamon. Here I tried sweet tea again...with crushed ice...another thing we don't see often in California. The cafe has a hometown, friendly feel to it. The wait staff were laughing and enjoying their work (for the most part) and seemed to have a personal connection with lots of local clients. Perhaps the manager came around taking pictures of people - after obtaining their permission - to post of their Facebook page. I could see us eating here again, if we're ever back in the area. Happened across this nondescript little café in the downtown area of Dalton by complete accident and SO glad we did! Their food is absolutely amazing: the BEST Brunswick Stew ever, their pimento cheese should be given some type of an award, excellent corn bread, super smoked chicken; everything we ate was simply great! The service is lightning fast and our server, Debbie, could not have been friendlier or more professional. The restaurant itself is perfectly clean and parking is free. Anytime we are back in Dalton we will look forward to stopping in at the Oakwood Café. read more
