We were driving from San Francisco to Yosemite ... and a combination of my wife needing to pee and it being around lunchtime landed us at The Oasis restaurant. Truthfully, drive another 17 minutes and you hit the bustling city of Modesto, but nature was calling :) It looks like an old trading post with mountains in the distance and is the only eatery on the strip. It also houses a U.S. Post Office and convenience store and one could certainly feel a bit dubious to enter for a meal. However, you'll be glad you did. Beatrice was our hostess, our waitress, our everything, and treated us as family. We went the Mexican route with my wife ordering the Asada Plate (pictured) while I had a Burrito Supreme. Both were tasty as all getup .. and because of the portion size, I even helped my wife finish hers :) I'll just say that the place is laid back and the food was delicious, and if you find yourself along Rt. 140 in Catheys Valley, you should pop in. I am so disappointed in this restaurant. I've been coming here for over 20 years and since I was a kid and it's been totally ruined. The prices are ridiculous and the food is really just sub par at best or disgusting at worse as shown in my "country potatoes" picture. I'm pretty appalled at what I got for $16 here (and thats with no tip) I got 2 eggs, 2 tiny slices of bacon, a SINGLE slice of toast, and potatoes which looked to have been eaten already and thrown back up in my container. The eggs and bacon were acceptable, but the toast seemed undone and I just had to throw out the potatoes. I just don't get how a restaurant can be so cheap and still charge an absurd price I mean would it really break the bank to give 2 slices of toast? I've never gotten a breakfast special somewhere with only one. Really the only somewhat good thing I have to say is their mexican food isn't the worst I've ever had, but it's still overpriced and bland and you're way better off going to a taco truck in planada if you want some good tacos and they'll probably be 35% cheaper. read more

Since moving to the Yosemite area from LA I miss good Mexican cooking but got a taste of it today at The Oasis. My husband stops in on his route and raves about the breakfast burritos. (They offer 2 sizes,) Today I visited for the first time and tried the Chile Rellenos. The generously portioned dish was great, perfectly cooked just how I like it! The owner Araceli showed me the cute little park area they're developing right next to the cafe for parties, BBQs etc. She has plans for this corner! Off Highway 140 and Hornitos Rd. In Catheys Valley. A quaint little place in the foothills outside Mariposa. The service was fast and the young lady helping was very polite and attentive. I tried to buy a bottle of water and she said "we have ice water and it's really good" I jumped all over that and aside for saving a buck it was very refreshing. Hubby and I visited recently and enjoyed ourselves. We are local living just 30 minutes up the hill. I had huevos rancheros. They were flavorful. The ranchero sauce was just the right amount of spice combined with an over medium egg. I'd like to see more cilantro, avocado, sour cream, and maybe some chorizo but I've been spoiled. Husband had a burger and fries, pretty standard. We will go back and take photos of the menu to post. Noticed there is no ambient noise, they need background music. I eat both American & Mexican, breakfast & lunch. The food is always fresh. The servers were very nice & answered questions for my friend. I've been coming here a lot more since my parents moved close by and I'm still obsessed. Their food is seriously consistent. Their breakfast burritos are so yummy. I get it without meat because they put bell peppers in it. It's so good and doesn't even need meat. I only wish they had tamales. We had The Oasis cater our wedding and it was absolutely delicious!! We chose to have the taco truck rather than buffet style. I was concerned at first because we had over 80 people attending but everyone was served very quickly and had more than enough time to come back for seconds or thirds We picked tacos and quesadillas, chicken, carne asada and el pastor. I hadn't been there the past few years and it was my first visit since their remodeling several months ago. It is now a really nice, clean and modern environment inside & outside with good food, friendly service, and very reasonable prices. My bike partner and I have been there many times over the years, stopping for lunch midway during our rides from Merced Falls to there and back. Stopped here by chance on our way to Yosemite. One of the specials was a birria plate and we decided to try it. One of the best Mexican plates I have had. The meat was perfectly cooked and it came with tortillas and sides to make our own tacos. They even gave us two floutas to try on the house. Staff was friendly and the restaurant was nice. At first look, the Oasis looks like a dive. It's right next to the post office and has a couple gas pumps outside and a little dark mini-mart inside. The wallpaper is coming down and it doesn't look like it has the best breakfast food around, but it DOES. The country gravy here is the bomb. Biscuits and gravy is my fave breakfast meal and I've eaten it all across the country and the Oasis has the best. Pair that with chicken fried steak and eggs and you have your meal for the day. It's VERY filling and often I end up taking half of it home. The country spread is the other thing I like to order for breakfast/brunch and it comes with sausage and bacon that is definitely not like anything sold at Denny's. It's freakin' awesome. I wish I had some of that gravy right now! As far as lunch goes. It's okay. Nothing to write home about but far better than a chain. It's a bit too greasy to me, but they sure don't starve you there. I'm not sure if they have dinner anymore, but the prime rib was pretty damn good when they had it. I know they cut back on their hours a few years back, so I'm not certain if that's available anymore. The Oasis can be tough to get seating during breakfast on the weekends or actually any day during the week. They only have a few tables and this is now the only place in town to eat and the locals love it. I sometimes call in an order and pick it up. It's really good down-home food akin to what you'd get in the midwest or the south. It's just not on my diet anymore so avoid the Oasis if you're counting calories. read more

Gone steadily downhill from the time the new owners took over - supposedly they are going to fix up the place which appears to be trashed. The mexican food there when they first opened was pretty good but I stopped going there for it because they are either out of common menu items or the meat resembles jerky. It's so dry you have to wonder how many times it's been reheated. I always found it amusing when the owner would brag if the carnitas were fresh, until i got some that were obviously anything but fresh. Recently due to our fridge going out I resorted to getting a couple burgers because it was late and I didnt feel like having to go all the way to town. The fries were undercooked and very stale and the burger tasted like school cafeteria food. So if your driving down 140 on your way to Yosemite, make sure you pass right on by the O-ass-is. read more

Don't be put off by how it looks. They are going to fix up the whole property and expand the restaurant. You'll see the place is busy all day long with locals. The oasis is exactly what it's called. Probably the most genuine place I've ever eaten at. The owners served us generous portions of homemade fresh authentic Mexican food and although the prices are cheap, the taste felt expensive. I vacationed here and stopped on the way back from Yosemite and this is by the far the best place to stop for lunch on the way back. Ignore the looks and allow yourself to be guests for an authentic Mexican meal homemade. If you get the tamales then you're life will probably be a little more complete; so good. read more
