Sutherland Plumbing

My most recent experience perfectly illustrates why they are my go-to plumbers. Our hot water heater began leaking over the weekend. After I reached out, they were incredibly responsive and managed to send someone out by noon on Monday. Cameron performed the work and did an outstanding job replacing our very old unit. It's such a relief to have a team you can trust for over a decade. They are professional, prompt, and their work is always high-quality. If you're looking for a plumber who is reliable and consistent, I highly recommend Ti and his crew!

The water suddenly stopped running in my house - well, not exactly, it would run for a few seconds and then stop. I asked my neighbors and their water was all running fine. Portland Water Bureau said it wasn't their problem. So I called Sutherland Plumbing randomly, and we did some trouble shooting over the phone. It looked like it may be a VERY expensive issue in the pipe between the house and the street. Ti Sutherland found a time to come by, since this was kind of an emergency since we couldn't shower, and he found the problem in just a couple of minutes. Turned out it was only the HOT water that was being stopped, and it was a janky flood prevention device that had been installed with the water heater. The batteries died and it shut off the flow. Replaced the batteries, and boom! We're all fixed. Ti actually got a big kick out of the whole process. Solving problems is his bag. Highly recommend.

Chris Moore with Mr. Rooter professionally diagnosed and repaired a broken drain pipe in my yard…read more He clearly showed me the damaged section, explained the repair plan, and completed the work efficiently. The repair was done in short order, and the lawn was carefully restored so it should recover well from the excavation. The cost was worth the quality of the work and the thorough, professional diagnosis. Very satisfied with the overall experience.

They said it would be $99 diagnostic fee just to show up and look at it because "a licensed plumber" had to be summoned for gas work. I said, "So you want me to pay you $99 so that I may have the privilege of paying you even more?" They said it's refundable if I have them do the work. Well, nothing is broke or leaking. There's no diagnosis. They saw the photo. Would take about 30 mins tops. So I'd be cautious hiring someone if you're possibly not even going to get a licensed plumber in another situation (thought even apprentices had to be with a licensed plumber). They're playing the "cherry picking game" where you feel like you have to get your $99 back... and if it's not a "big job" like new construction or a big bathroom remodel - they don't really want this little stuff. Leave that to the local guys who build relationships.. so local is the route I went and you'll see my review of those guys when I get it done.

This time they were out to replace a sump pump. James communicated when he was coming, arrived on time, and did the job quickly. He was friendly and talked at my level. Definitely the kind of customer service you'd expect from Cornel's. Premium price, but premium customer service and quality people. You get what you pay for! I'm keeping them on speed dial.

The claim is in…read moresubrugation, but in the meantime, my home insurance has gone up $1000 a year and now other insurance companies will not consider me for home insurance. The one company that will will take me on will not write in a water sewer backup clause, and there is no way I would not have that coverage. Due to the bathtub faucet not being put back together correctly, I had flooding in my kitchen, bedroom closet and master bathroom. Because the tile could not be matched, the entire bathroom had to be redone. Not only did I have 6 months of disruption/construction in my house, I'm now going to pay more in insurance and I don't have the ability to change my insurance without high risk to me financially. I do not recommend this company. Nobody ever reached out to me after the damage, however they did call the Flood Pros without telling me that they had done so when I called in a panic on a Saturday night. The initial reason I called them was to fix an bathtub faucet that was dripping in the tub, and I ended up with a disaster.

Outstanding service, highly recommend this company…read more Details: We own and live in a duplex. This is the company we hired to install both water heaters (one in 2013 [gas], the other in 2019 [electric]), replacing the ones we inherited when we bought the house in 2003. We were impressed with their work on the replacements, and were again impressed with the work that happened this week. There was nothing wrong with either heater, but it had been a while since the gas heater in particular had been checked; we scheduled a service call, fully expecting to be told that the heater might need replacing due to its age. Jesse did an excellent, thorough job. He had to replace the anode rod which was full of minerals, but that was it. He did not tell us it was time to replace the heater, and in fact told us the heater was probably good for another 7 years and we could wait 5 years to get it checked again. He went above and beyond in making sure everything was working as it should (we have a hydronic furnace). We will continue to call this company for our water heater needs.

Also, we had to pay the full fee even though our hot water heater is less than a year and a half old. When I spoke with the manager he stated that because they did not install our hot water heater, our service was not a priority. We were also told that because it was so new we needed to go through this company buy this is not true. The warranty people stated any any repair man will do as long as they call them at the time of repair. If you are looking for a reliable company. I would not recommend this company.

Their quote came in the lowest and Brandon was extremely helpful on the phone, so I ended up choosing them. - The quote process was great: I submitted their online form, they gave me a call asking for more details, I sent them a few pictures, and they gave me another call with solutions and a quote. The quote also happened to be the cheapest of the 3 companies I got bids from. - The installation went very smoothly. I understand that direct vent water heaters are a little tricky to install, but Brandon installed perfectly. He arrived on time, got rid of our old water heater, and added a new water heater with several fixes: the overflow pipe now runs to the sink, he used a "flex vent" kit so the water heater can sit on the ground, and he put the water heater in a tray to reduce issues from slow leaks since I don't have a basement drain. - After the install, Brandon taught me how to change the temp / turn the water heater off / how to flush it / how to change the anode rod. Very pleased with the work and my new water heater is working flawlessly. The only downside was that there was no permit. I'm no expert on permits. Portland's website says that water heater changes require a permit. Brandon said it's a "gray area" for residential. I am not planning on selling the house and things looked good to me, so I don't mind too much.
