If you want an extremely high-priced plumber ($160/hour) who charges the same rate for one plumber, as he does for 2; then Paul is your guy! When I questioned him on that, he said, "well....that's just what I do." I told him I did not think that was a fair justification to billing his customers (repeat customers at that), and he again told me that that is the way he bills. I originally hired Paul's team to do the plumbing on my kitchen remodel (& they were great). I was very happy with Ben so I used them again for a minor bathroom drain issue. There was ONE guy on the more recent drain repair job, but I was charged as if there were two. After calling around, the average hourly plumber's rate range in Portland seems to be $90-120/hour. A long, long time ago in an alternate universe far, far away, our landlord gave a few drug addicts a job installing our kitchen sink. Flash ahead 10 years to the day the house became our own. Since then, we knew it was only a matter of time until the drug induced plumbing inspiration would collapse in a disaster of Noah's flood proportions. That day, or that weekend night actually, was last night when our faucet supply valve failed. 6AM Sunday morning we woke up to a flooded kitchen, warped floor and all. With 9 women sharing our huge house we couldn't wait until Monday morning. We had to shut off water to the entire 4 floors to stop the leak. By chance we saw the great reviews for Paul's Plumbing first on Yelp and an online yellow pages. We noted right away they welcomed the emergency calls even on a Sunday morning. Shortly after talking with the answering service, plumber Tim called us back. He did a "triage" on the phone trying to save us money from the very first. Once we determined that our job couldn't wait, he set an appointment and was right on time. The truth is, Sunday plumbing runs double-time, just short of $200 an hour. I won't kid you. These guys are experienced professionals and had we not owned the meth-addicted plumbing from hell, I know they would have been out of here in 30 minutes. I had such confidence in their work those first few minutes, and they were so quick, we had them completely rebuild all the plumbing. It was finished to perfection. In the end they gave us a really fair price for a huge amount of work. Plumber Tim left us with his personal cell number just in case we ever had another after hours emergency when the answering service was closed. I would give 10 stars if possible. I called the first time for a clogged sink for my mother. They came out the same day and were just wonderful. Josh called me on the phone and told me the situation and that he needed to replace some pipes etc. and would be back the following day. He did, everything works great, and the prices were very reasonable. I called a few weeks later about getting other work done. Josh answered the phone and said he would come over now. Wow, unbeleivable, I never expected such quick service. A third time I had to call for another issue. The issue turned out to be much larger. We had an emergency rupture in our pipes with the water having to be shut off to the whole house. Hundreds, if not thousands, of gallons of water pouring out into our neighborhood. It was a disaster. I'm a contractor and used Paul's plumbing to hook up a shower pan. They didn't do it right, it leaked and caused sheetrock damage. When it came time to settle on my repair labor, Paul refused to cover my full costs, was quite rude in telling me my time is worth less than it is. He was argumentative and difficult. Paul sent Benjamin out to stop my kitchen sink faucet from leaking. He determined it needed to be rebuilt and it took about 2 hours of labor including him going to the store. So, now instead of leaking, the handle pops off and a geyser of water shoots to my ceiling. Benjamin came out one more time and worked on it, and the same day it popped off again. Now he tells me we need to start from square one and install a whole new faucet. The thing I think is curious is that my faucet wasn't actually broken before, it was just leaking. So, Paul's Plumbing broke my faucet and charged me about $200 for it. Great. read more

Took my a little while to get to this so.... APOLOGIES! Brand new house (NEW TO ME!) and a brand new problem!!! Master Bath tub spout goes BOOM!!! At 10:30pm!!! What mounted to roughly 75 Gal/Min began shooting out of the wall and into the bathroom floor! Water, water EVERYWHERE!!! Once the fire department arrived and mopped up all the mess I was still left with NO WATER (not JUST for me, but for the ENTIRE row of townhouses!!!) and the HUGE potential for another massive leak! Who to call??? Well, I honestly called EVERY PLUMBING COMPANY WITHING the greater Portland Area! What ever Google "suggested: was who I had called! Most of the companies would simply refer me elsewhere, while others would offer to "schedule an appointment next week." Now, I'm not going to say that when I called Paul's Plumbing that they just JUMPED at the chance like vultures circling over their next meal. I had to talk to the receptionist first and pretty much plead my case with a huge amount of humor, as this really was pretty funny in a Tom Hanks/The Money Pit kind of way... After I gave the young lady the story and my contact info, I continued to call other shops. Where this story get s good (for me, at least) is that in the middle of a phone call to yet another plumbing company, Paul calls me back. PAUL! Not the receptionist or one of the plumbers on his payroll, but PAUL! We spoke for a few more minutes as he too (probably) just wanted to get a feel for what was going on and whether or not he would be able to service my property. Paul made NO PROMISES but assured me that he "would try to help." So far, this was the best news I had heard since the 911 operator informed me that PDX FIRE was on the way! I tell you, WITHIN MINUTES I had a van at my door, engine still running and the driver's side door not even shut and the plumber was already asking questions and giving instructions... LESS THAN TWENTY MINUTES LATER he was peeling out and off to whatever job he already had lined up! Yes, who ever was "scheduled" for that morning got delayed by a few minutes, but judging by the efficiency with which this guy worked (I think his name was Jeff... S. Carolina was all I remembered!), I'm guessing that they didn't even notice! I had a bad underground leak in front of my house. Water was shooting up from underneath my entrance walkway. The pipe from the water main to the house had a bad leak. I called a number of different plumbers only to get denied by most of them. Either they said they were booked, or they could come by that day but it would cost me time and a half. I called Paul's and he too was very busy that day. He said there might be a window to where he could squeeze me in. He promised to call back in a couple hours when one of his plumbers was expected to be free. Sure enough, as promised, his plumber called me in an hour. I had started digging up the walkway myself to expose the leak. Paul's plumber came out (forgot to get his name, but a very nice gentleman) assessed the situation and immediately got to work on the problem. Took over digging up the walkway and quickly exposed the leak. It was more than 2 feet underground. He repaired the leak and was on his way in about 2 hours total. I'm very satisfied with Paul's Plumbing's service and HIGHLY reccomend them. Courteous, professional, honest, prompt service, and VERY reasonable price. read more

Had an urgent issue with the drain pipe in the kitchen sink. I called Paul's on Friday evening, they answered the phone right away. Took my info and said I'd hear from one of their guys shortly. Sure enough, I got a call from Josh about 45 minutes later. We discussed the issue, I texted him some pictures and he said he'd contact me the next morning to schedule time to come fix it. True to his word, Josh contacted me Saturday morning just as he promised. He committed to being at my house in about an hour. He was right on time. He was able to fix my problem in less time and for less money than he originally thought! He was prompt, thorough and friendly. I can't say enough about Paul and his crew. They arrived on time yesterday to install a water line for my new fridge's ice maker and when I asked them to take a look at my hot water heater, they said it should be replaced. Things started out great. But ended in the worst experience I have ever had with someone doing work in my home, and left me feeling unsafe. My husband set up the appointment and I was there alone with my two toddler-age kids when the two employees arrived. They were kind and congenial. In fact, one offered to show me how he installed something so I could do it myself on a different tub if desired. Great service. When the employee was finished, my husband called the employee with some questions about the bill. If you care, they were rate-related questions detailed below. If not, skip to next paragraph: One question was about the rate we were charged being different than the rate agreed upon by phone beforehand (Which Paul, the boss, confirmed when he finally listened.) The second question was about how much time he was logging. He was charging us for time filling out the invoice, for example. (A previous plumber we used had the invoice and payment ready within sixty seconds. This plumber took 15 minutes out in the car after he finished the work. Seems nitpicky... but really adds up at $160 an hr. When you consider we are being charged for transportation time to the site, that means we are paying a total of $75 for time they are not doing plumbing work). At the end of the conversation my husband asked to talk to Paul to verify the rate. Meanwhile, I had no idea what is going on, but within about sixty seconds into the phone conversation, I hear the employee downstairs yelling on the phone to my husband. I was upstairs in my bedroom with my two young children. The employee then called his boss and was ranting loudly about my husband as the employee walked up the stairs to my bedroom. At that point, this large male who was speaking loudly and aggressively was standing in my bedroom between me and the door, about five feet away from me and my children, both of whom were wide-eyed staring at the man yelling about my husband. I motioned and quietly asked him to please finish the conversation downstairs. He did not stop or move and instead said loudly into the phone "Now they're both suddenly unsatisfied". Honestly this is a major safety issue. The employee was so congenial and appropriate up until that point, and escalated so quickly that I wondered if he has an anger management issue. Here are a few rules that I should not have to tell you: Do not walk up the stairs to my bedroom while you're yelling on the phone. Do not stand in my bedroom, between me and the doorway while yelling on the phone. If a female with young children in tow, politely asks you (a stranger acting aggressively and unpredictably) to leave her bedroom, you say "Oh my goodness, of course". You do not argue with her. I probably wouldn't even be writing this review, if I had gotten a response from Paul (the boss and owner) that indicated he understood the gravity of the problem. Instead, Paul was defensive. His first response to me when I told him what was happening was "settle down" and then "well yeah, he was upset because your husband wasn't paying the bill" (This is not at all true. The employee told my husband he'd have to talk to Paul to verify what rate was quoted and then he hung up on my husband. There was no threat whatsoever of not paying, and Paul jumped to this conclusion before even talking to my husband.). Once I told Paul it would be really wise to just listen well and recognize that this is an important safety issue and that the employee needs to take responsibility for his actions regardless of whoever is making him mad on the phone, he finally said okay, okay, he understood and would reprimand the employee. Frankly, it seemed pretty clear to me that Paul didn't see it as a serious issue. That is concerning. He was apparently more apologetic to my husband and said they have all be working really hard and are tired. I hope indeed this was an anomaly, but we won't be using them again and wouldn't recommend them. read more

Please Avoid Paul's Plumbing Service My whole problem with Paul's plumbing service started after I got a quote over the phone ($150/hour +parts), from his partner in crime "Josh", which did not at all represent the final bill: $3200 for about 5 person hours (~$600/hour), abject refusal to itemize parts or labor, absolute refusal to put any sort of warranty in writing. When challenged, Paul will completely ignore the word "quote" or even acknowledge that one was given over the phone, only reference the "bid" that he gives you in person and then mansplain to you that the "bid" is the actual total amount due at the end of the con-job regardless of how long ... or ... in my case extremely short ... the time it takes to do said job. To be clear, there were two people on site, but only one of those people actually did any work .. and, to save money, I personally dug the hole in my front yard which allowed them access to the water main ... as for parts, a plastic tube and fittings ... maybe $100? In the end, I complained to Paul that the final price was unfair and that my wife and I felt that he took advantage of us. He was completely unremorseful and took it upon himself to defend his actions by mansplaining the fact that we should have known the difference between "repair or service work" and a bid (which we were presented after he arrived ... without telling us that there was any difference at all). - Please avoid Paul's plumbing service - Do not sign a "bid" after you have been given a quote If I had known what I know now, I would have chased him off of my property with a big stick (with dog shi* on the end of it). Paul will look you in the eye and tell you "Yelp Loves Me" -- direct quote. I hope this review puts a dent in that (as he did our bank account) and I hope Yelp loves you just a little bit less today, Paul. ... and you can quote me on that. read more

I had the unfortunate situation of calling a plumber. Last night, I found that water was flowing under our house in the crawl space, which meant I had to shut off the water to our house until we got it fixed. I was charged $156/hr for the emergency rate, which is 1.5X regular rate. To me, it was important to get it addressed right away, as we need our water. Paul's dispatch was quick and easy, and a plumber called me right away to schedule a same-day appt. I was given a 2-hr window and he called to let me know when he was on his way - he was on the latter part of the window, which was totally fine. Benjamin came over and repaired the cracked pipe in our crawl space. He was nice, and got straight to work. There was a moment where he went out to his van for a while - I thought I saw smoke coming out of it -- which for me, seems like an expensive smoke break for me to pay for. I didn't actually see him smoking, so I cannot confirm. Overall, I'm happy with the company and the service provided. 5 stars would have been given if these things had happened: Clean up - he left crawl space hatch off, and the towels he had to ask for, were left for me to clean up, along with the entire area around the hatch. Smoke Break - he didn't seem to be on task the entire time. 1.5X the rate, I'm sensitive to productivity. Religion/Politics - he was very outspoken about his staunch republican beliefs, and also went as far as giving his opinion on gays in the military. Nice enough guy, but he kind of ruined it with his opinions that were not solicited. I was looking to pay and have him go so I could get back to work. read more

Paul did a great job following up after I emailed him and we agreed on a date and time to do the work. Unfortunately that was the best experience of dealing with his company. We agreed on starting at 8 but he called at 8:30 to say they bumped us off the schedule for Kens Artisan Bakery that was a more important customer than us. He said they would be there by 10ish. He called again at 11 to say they couldn't be there until 12. His guy showed up at 12:30 and although we agreed on $109 an hour, we got charged $380 for 2 and 1/2 hours. And his guy went home early because he was tired from the previous job. Overall, a very disappointing experience. read more

Called several places and they were booked for a week or more. Paul's said they would not be able to come out for 2 days. They called back 1/2 hour later and said they could get someone over in the next hour. Less than 1/2 hour later they arrived. Fixed the problem, explained the issue and were gone in approximately 1 hour. I would recommend these guys. Very polite, efficent, and better than expected cost. read more

They answered my call over the weekend which was great. They have an emergency service. It is very expensive, but I imagine very useful in certain situations. As mine wasn't dire, even though I discovered Paul's plumbing on the weekend, I decided to wait for a weekday to make an appointment. They were able to come out very quickly and solve my problem. It was a leak between two floors in a building and they took care of it in three hours and the total cost was around $500. The only reason why they were given four stars out of five, is to echo some of the other reviews in terms of the leaving to find parts. I don't have much experience with plumbers so perhaps I shouldn't say, however, it would seem that most journeyman plumber's would have a truck stocked with common parts. Either that, or they should clearly indicate where and why they're going to pick up the part, what part they needed to obtain, and whether or not the time spent obtaining of parts is billable or an extra expense. If it is an extra expense, then the location of the parts supply store should be given beforehand in order to determine travel time and total estimation of the cost. Or it should be made clear that travel time to obtain the part was not included in the cost. They do include in the cost travel time from their office to the residence as part of the total charge. The last plumbing service I work with had $100 flat fee for coming out and then charged a much lower amount hourly which for some reason felt more straightforward of an agreement versus feeling penalized in terms of the starting location of the plumber. read more

I wasn't expecting free work, never did, when I asked about backfilling, I was told "several hours and a week out". That made me feel like my feet was held to the fire. Several hours? When you called for payment, I was at work and told you I would call you back when I got home, which I did. I got voicemail and left a msg. When I talked to you the next day, you said you were busy with your favorite "Steelers" Monday night football and was to busy to come to the phone. Holding payment?....please. Nobody mentioned anything about rescheduling or emergency rates and I was getting a deal with regular rate, all I know is that when I was told he was coming out to do the repair and was a no show, phone went to voicemail and left me scrambling for another plumber. Of course I want to save money, doesn't everyone? But I wanted a professional job done in a professional way. I'm a union worker and only expect a professional job. I never mentioned I wanted to save and asked what I can do. You just assume because I initially dug up the leak that I could do further digging to help you out, wrong. I pulled the dirt away and once I saw the pipe going further into the earth, it was time for a professional. The only digging I did was before I decided to call, for Paul to say : "told him to dig up which he did" that was done before they arrived, not because he told me to. That's just a bold outright lie. And for you to say I held payment until the boxes were replaced is another bold outright lie. The only thing I wanted done by you was to replace the cement box around the main that your company pulled out and left out. Not the "boxes" that I had removed as you are implying. Pipe exposed for a day? Really? It was underwater when I got home. I'm not even sure it's been cured correctly. I did not expect you to clean up any mess that I created as part of the original cost as you state, I only wanted cleaned up what you tore apart. I believe the leak was caused by the way the boxes were installed initially 18 years ago by a contractor, which is why I asked how much you would charge to reinstall them correctly. I was not withholding payment, I paid you at the earliest convenience while I was at work. There are days that I am extremely busy and there are days that I'm not. For you to insinuate that I held payment is prejudice. You were very defensive when I asked when you were going to come back out and finish what you tore apart. You weren't the one that came out and did the job, maybe you should talk to your employees and figure just what is going on on the job site. Nobody explained that you were rescheduling any work to facilitate my repair or that my repair normally constitutes an emergency rate. All I was told was "I'll be right out", which took two days. And you did help, but we did have water, I just had to turn it off and on at the curb which was a big inconvenience. So for you to say we had no water is another lie. It's all in my original statement. So let's recap all the lies: 1)"had no water" we did, just had to turn it on and off at curb. 2) "went over personally to fix" was that you or Josh? never talked to you until you wanted your money. 3)"told him to dig up pipe which he did" that was done before I called you. Not because you told me to 4)"was holding payment" when did I ever refuse to pay you? 5)"he expected us to clean up that mess that he dug up as part of original charge" I at no time ever said that I wanted it all put back together at no further charge, never. I only wanted what you pulled apart put back together, which you didn't, and I still paid you. Yes, paid you. For a job that was uncomplete. And here we are. Good luck. read more
