On the positive side: Inventory - This neighborhood shop carries a huge inventory with a wide variety of brands, styles and price points. Prices - From what I can tell, each brand and style may offer a variety of price points and the shop does sometimes offer discounts and specials. Availability - The shop offers convenient and customer friendly hours, check web site for the details. Staff - In my experience the staff has invariably been welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. When I recently mentioned that a flat cap I'd purchased there seemed a little snug, they insisted on enlarging it a half-size at no charge, and the result was perfect. Location - It is absolutely perfect for me to have what I've heard is the country's best hat store only 15 minutes from home. I often arrive with questions only and they are always welcoming and helpful. Negatives The traffic is awful because of construction work going on along 4th Avenue. Parking anywhere nearby on the street is nearly impossible, but there is a small lot at the rear of the building in the alley between 4th and 5th, and Robinson and University that I've never seen more than half-filled and is free for customers.

I asked whether there were any other holes like it on the hat, and she acknowledged there were not. Because the item was a final sale, I asked whether they would consider a discount due to the defect. The assistant manager declined. I then asked to speak with the store manager and was told the manager was not there. When I asked who could make that decision, the assistant manager said she would need to contact the executive manager but did not offer to do so until I specifically asked her to make the call. Instead, she took the hat from me and said she would return it to the vendor. I explained that I wanted to buy the hat and was simply requesting a reasonable discount because it had a visible defect. At that point, she said, "It can't hurt to ask the manager," took my phone number, and said someone would get back to me. I'm waiting to see whether management follows up and will update this review accordingly.

When I went to get my hat a while later someone had moved it to the floor (yikes) and a plastic cup of Coke had apparently slipped off a window sill above and dumped its contents into my upside down hat. By the time I got there the Coca Cola had been drip drip dripping through the top of the upside down hat and puddling onto the floor. I about threw up when I saw it. I may have said some bad words. I ran to a sink to try and rinse out the horrible brown stain right on the front crown but the damage was done. I thought my negligence had destroyed a $300 hat. That's when I found El Centenario in Chula Vista. They delivered. They washed it, reshaped it, and stiffened it to Stetson factory standards. All for $50. Couldn't be happier.
