The Obsidian Room gives off "banquet hall" vibes, like dining in one of the stately restaurants aboard the Titanic, without all the seawater..but it sure does fill up just as quick! As soon as the doors open at 5:00PM, if you're not already in the queue to get your name on a list for a table, you may be waiting for a bit. We ended up dining her twice, over the course of two days, as our road trip through Yellowstone found us back here at Old Faithful both evenings. During our first visit, our server Hudson, who honestly was one of the best servers we've encountered anywhere (management, take note!), was genuinely pleasant to interact with, efficient, engaging, and accurate. We split an amazing charcuterie board (probably the best thing on their menu), the lamb lollipops (man, that chimichurri is on another level!), and a couple of cocktails, and had a wonderful experience. During our second visit, things were still very good, although I think we'd been spoiled a bit by Hudson. Our server wasn't quite as charming (Hudson was engaged with other tables nearby, to our chagrin), and our meals not quite as enchanting (still good, but lacking a little something), but by no means wasn't a bad experience whatsoever. For specifics: my wife's wild mushroom pasta, to which she added some grilled shrimp, was really great...but would have been less so without the added shrimp: too small of a portion, and no significant source of protein or substance - just a plate of noodles and fungus. That may sound like a nitpick, and in truth, it is, but as-is, it's lacking something, and doesn't warrant its price point. All things considered, the Obsidian Room does most things right, and a few things need improvement, but when it comes to service, they're knocking things out of the (national) park...and considering the colossal size of Yellowstone, that's one hell of a home run! read more

Reviews here are very mixed. I visited two nights in a row. It is a decent restaurant setting with a feel that smashes fast food casual into a mid level chain restaurant. I can't really explain it any better. It's not bad, but at the price point, one would expect more. Staff: They will take your order and bring your food out, but don't expect anything else. You get what you get and won't have an opportunity to fix it. Quality: go ahead and roll the dice. My son ordered a smash burger the first visit and it was to order. We both ordered one on our second visit and both were missing lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. Oddly, mine came out on two bottom buns. Again, given their service, you have suck it up because nobody will fix it. I saw a fairly decent sized man order a steak next to me and he only ate a few bites,,,that told me all I needed to know about that 50 buck entree. Pricing: it is expensive for what you get, but, relative toward other options in the area, it isn't horrible. Stick to the cheaper options and roll with the punches. Hope this helps! read more

Atrocious is the best description of our dining experience. We arrived at 6:30pm and got our food at 8:15pm (!!!). There was no explanation, no apologies... when we asked the young lady if the kitchen is planning on feeding us tonight, she checked on our food (which she should have done half an hour into us waiting). 3 of the 4 meals came out cold, portions looked like we got the rest of what they had left. For the premium price, we all left hungry and highly disappointed. They could have at least comped a meal or sent out free dessert for this disaster. I don't think service is trained at all to deal with issues, they are all young and friendly, but how to follow up, solve problems, keep an eye on the table and how to deal with late food etc... lots to learn here for the future (plus management clearly doesn't put time into training). Unfortunately I can't recommend this dining room, I would rather eat at the cantine across the parking lot for a fraction of the price and get my food right away. read more

We stopped by Obsidian Restaurant during our Yellowstone trip and left with very mixed feelings. The food was genuinely delicious -- the filet mignon was the highlight of the evening. The meat was incredibly tender, soft, and cooked perfectly. Dessert was also very good once it arrived. Unfortunately, the service was painfully slow throughout the entire experience. We waited about an hour for a table, then nearly 30 more minutes before our order was taken. Our waitress seemed distracted and not very attentive, which made the long waits feel even longer. After dinner, our table sat uncleared for quite a while, and getting the check became another long wait. Since we were hoping to catch the Old Faithful geyser eruption before leaving, we eventually stood near the checkout station just to speed things up. It's always a wait to snag a table at a dining room in one of the lodges but at least you can get a reservation on the day of vs wayyyy in advance like some of the other dining rooms. We waited about 45 mins for a table but the free wifi worked so we didn't mind the wait. Service was fine, not solid but not terrible either. We got the beet salad and added on the grilled shrimp, jackfruit quesadilla, a huckleberry mocktail and ended the night with the basque cake. This was hands down our best meal at Yellowstone! The beets and the dressing in the salad was tasty, the quesadilla was filling (although a little light on salt), the mocktail was refreshing (although a little low on quantity), and the cake was moist and delicious. I wish i could order TO GO ONLY!!! Because food is great but service is jokingly HORRIBLE!!! The food was the only saving grace here. The trout and filet mignon were genuinely good -- well-prepared and flavorful. But that's where the positives end. We waited 45 minutes just to be seated, which already set a rough tone. Our server moved at a pace I've never seen before -- so slow and overly apologetic that my wife and I genuinely couldn't tell if she was having a bad day or something else entirely. After dinner we ordered two desserts for Mother's Day -- an ice cream and a lava cake -- along with a simple drip coffee. She never even bothered to clear our dinner plates before bringing dessert. We finished the lava cake and the ice cream, and the coffee never came. She simply forgot, apologized, and we just canceled it. Then we waited 15 minutes for the check, and another 10 minutes just to get charged. The worst part? Because of all this, we missed the 8 PM Old Faithful eruption -- by just five minutes. It was our last night in Yellowstone. If the service had any sense of urgency, we would've made it. Instead, a special Mother's Day memory was ruined. This was a really nice meal. Decor is great, fits perfectly in the snow lodge. Food took a bit long to come out, but everything was good. Hubs had the bison short ribs and liked it a lot. I had the Idaho trout, and it was very tasty (could have been warmer). Kiddo had the bbq tofu. It was also pretty good. The grains could use a little more flavor, but overall a solid choice. Pretty good spot in this area. The Firehole Lounge is right next to/a part of the Obsidian room. We were there to share apps, get drinks, and play some card/board games before dinner. We got below: - Onion rings - Crispy duck wings - Mushroom Ravioli - Charcuterie board All were great to share, folks liked the wings and ravioli the most. Service was okay/not that great, when drinks/food were finished the waitress did not come by to clean it up right away. We were seated immediately and greeted by Savannah once we got settled at our table. With a pleasant smile, and a pen and paper in hand, Savannah took our beverage, small plates and dinner order. Over a span of about 20 minutes, we received everything that we ordered. Let's get our fork into the details: the dinner rolls were so deliciously warm and tasty. The butter wasn't even bothered much. Masking the ooo's and aaa's that were creating musical tones behind our lips, after every bite, would have been a disservice to the hard work of the baker. Biting into the ravioli allowed the taste buds to play a pleasurable game of ping pong. The beef steak dinner was a magical creation. The request for "medium rare plus" was presented with perfection. The smash burger was seasoned for an exclusive prized competition and had the impression of being smashed with 10 karat gold hands. The duck leg meal, well, I asked to speak with the chef... Chef Austin and his team deserve praises for how they curated this dish! There was nothing bland or boring about my last meal on this particular day. The meal was made with precise attention, phenomenal timing, personality, and vision. After meeting and having an extensive, amazing, eye opening conversation with Chef Austin, I certainly absorbed the passion that this young, aspiring and passionate Chef has for the cuisines he has been honored to master. I'm sure you can assume what I'm going to say. Yes, you're right. When hunger kicks in and you are near Old Faithful Geyser, make yourself move around the corner to this restaurant. Food was better than expected for in the park. I had bbq tofu and it was actually really good. One of the people in my party had the buffalo chili and said it was good too. Prices were a bit steep, but again, we were in the park. Our server was nice and friendly. The ambiance was fine, quite loud because the dining room was really crowded due to the limited eating options. We came in at 7 pm on a Saturday. The restaurant was half full and we were seated immediately. This place is first come first serve, no reservations allowed. They're only open for breakfast and dinner. Our waitress, Nicole, was great. She took our order promptly and was polite. The food came out super fast. And she attended to us only when we needed her. We ordered a bison tartare, curry lentil and quinoa soup, bison short ribs, and wild boar. We also got a carrot cake for dessert. The food was alright overall. The bison tartare was pretty good. The biscuit that came with it was flavorful and went well with the meat. The curry soup came out near boiling hot, had a strong Indian curry scent, but was a little too salty. The bison ribs weren't fall off the bone but tasted okay. The broccoli and peas helped balance the dish. The wild boar was a pasta dish covered in gamey ragu sauce that was pretty sour. Not sure if I liked it. Both the ribs and the pasta were lukewarm. The carrot cake was pretty good. It was filled with carrot strips which gave it that extra crunch. We were nervous after reading reviews but we got to the restaurant at 5:05 and were out of there by 6:10 to catch the old faithful eruption. Server and her assistant were friendly, manager stopped by and brought us ketchup (our server brought some too 1 minute later). We got burgers, beer, gumbo and kids pasta and bbq chicken. We stayed in the Snow Lodge Cabins in October. At this time of the year, there is little open in the park as far as food/ services goes. We had little choice in where to eat. We were quickly seated upon arrival. I ordered the Wild Boar (North African spiced ragu, garlic chive pappardelle, curry yogurt). Honestly it was delicious. The flavors were well balanced and it was cooked very nicely. My sister ordered the Wild Game Burger (Bison with beer-washed cheese, applewood-smoked bacon, sweet heirloom tomato jam, greens, brioche bun, and fries). She ordered it medium and it came out raw. Legitimately raw (actually cold in the center). She sent it back and 10 mins later they brought her a new one that was cooked properly with no fuss. For desert we ordered the Yellowstone Caldera with ice cream. I think it was "trying" to be a lava cake, but was overbaked ($8.95). Adding ice cream was an additional $3.95. We received two ping pong ball sized scoops of ice cream. Pretty ridiculous to charge that much for so little vanilla ice cream. Service was friendly and faster than expected. read more

Perhaps the experience here is better during peak season but we went during shoulder season to see the elk and bears. We are guessing that the college kids that normally staff restos in the parks had gone back to school leaving them short staffed. There was a two hour wait to be seated so we went to the bar and tried to eat there. The wait person took our order but never entered it so after two drinks and no food we gave up. Great surprise, especially that this is only few hundred yards from (shhhhh, major disappointing Old Faithful Inn Dining Room). We were there for dinner and breakfast. Great options (including vegan, vegetarian and meat eaters). Breath of fresh air with attention to service and quality of dishes and ingredients. Interestingly, there are common items on menus of some of the better restaurants in YSNP. For example, several dishes are common at Obsidian, Lake Hotel and Mamoth Dining Room. Cooks locally tweek it but the general ingredients and the dish is the same. They all for example had a Vegan breakfast Bowl. And Obsidian's "interpretation" of it was the better one in our opinion. When we checked in at the Old Faithful Inn, we were informed about the dinner option available in the Snow Lodge, they even had a menu on display. One night during out stay we decided to get dinner from the Obsidian Room at the Snow Lodge. Once you enter the Snow Lodge they have a counter at which you place the food order, and then about 15 - 20 mins later you pick up food across the lobby. When we got there to order food there was a line and we had to wait around 20 mins in line to order. We got the Wild game Bolognese, Bison Short ribs, and Yellowstone Caldera. While waiting for our dinner to be ready we got a drink from the place next door and hung out in the lobby. After picking up our food, we found a table outside and enjoyed dinner outdoors. The Bison Short Ribs and the mashed potatoes that came with it were good. The Wild Game Bolognese tasted good but there wasn't enough sauce for the noodles, seeing as it also came with bread and would have been nicer to have some sauce to dip the bread in. We ordered at the entrance of the restaurant, and they gave us a buzzer and told is to go into the reception area to get our food. The employees were all wearing masks and gloves, and were super nice! We got 6 ribs total with mashed potatoes and a side of veggies, and 4 pairs of eyes watched as I took a bite, and at the first sign that it was delicious, promptly devoured the rest of the meal. Our consensus was 4.8/5! Delicious, but definitely on the pricey side, but this is top-notch gourmet food AT A NATIONAL PARK!!!! We would have gotten it again if time had allowed. I think it's a real shame old reviews are factored into the scores. This one has poor scores from years ago about awful food, but it's changed a lot since. My wife and I split two entrees: the trout ($25.95) and the bison short ribs ($31.95) and split a small Caesar salad ($8.75). The salad was fine, nondescript. Nothing special. The trout was some of the best I've ever had, just delightful. It came with vegetables (carrots, asparagus and artichoke) with a creamed pea smear (odd but colorful). The bison short ribs were good but perhaps a little gamey. The mash potatoes delicious, especially with the gravy. The roast carrots (two halves) were weird - sprinkled with curry powder. The manager came by to ask how it was and I said they should do a sampler entree because I wanted to try them all, especially the tomato and fresh mozzarella pasta. Sadly, he didn't get the hint. I was hoping for a little bowl, but no dice. $85 including tip (no drinks) was a little pricey but still very good. read more

Monopoly leads to bad service. Since you have no other places to go, you just have to accept the worst. Made a reservation, almost an hour later we still can't get seated. While we watched some "friends" of the reception lady just sneaked in with a reservation that is for 3 hours later. We politely requested the reason (perhaps race related since we are not her white friends), but a very arrogant manager came out, started with "what's your problem" and essentially told us "either wait or fxxk off and starve". At that point we were shocked, just cannot believe such words can come out of someone in hospitality business. But since he had the point - he can indeed kick us out and we would have nothing to eat - we did not continue with the conversation. I would recommend the burger place next door before they close (we missed it unfortunately), just don't come to this place for dinner. Will pack some instant noodles next time, better than waiting here helplessly. And guess what, they don't offer to go. Eventually after our dinner, I feel very sorry for our waitress, who did an excellent job and does not deserve this one-star rating, but because of the terrible treatment from reception and the manager, I really couldn't rate it higher. They ruined the whole experience from the beginning. I also feel sorry for the kitchen. The reception lady blamed the delay entirely on the kitchen (the reason she told everyone). But her behavior of letting people in earlier than their reservervation time added significant extra burden on the kitchen. If the Obsidian Room were a geothermal feature in Yellowstone it'd be a dry little fumarole emitting steamy poofs of nothingness. I didn't come to Yellowstone for good food but it would've been a nice surprise were I to stumble upon it. The Obsidian Room (inside Old Faithful Snow Lodge) is one of the park's few restaurants where you sit down, order off a menu, and the meal is brought to your table by a server. You pay for that experience with very mediocre and somewhat overpriced food. At dinner, I opted for a Spinach Salad ($11.75) topped with broiled chicken ($5.95), one of the menu's cheaper offerings. Another at my table had pasta in a Bison Bolognese ($19.75). Served with a bread basket, each were perfectly mediocre examples of their genre. At dinner, the Obsidian Room is big but loud with families and children finishing their long day. If you want to be waited on, it's one of your few options but enter with low expectations for the most satisfying experience. Without many good in-park dining destinations, Yellowstone has you a bit over a barrel where eating is concerned. If you're anywhere near a park exit, you'll likely find better food outside the park. A couple of other things to know: * Dining in the Yellowstone Lodge is far more popular, often requiring reservations, but their menu has several of the same offerings as the Obsidian Room. Though the atmosphere may be better there I'm betting the food is not. * If you're told there's a 30 minute wait ask how many parties are ahead of you. I was told this, walked to the lounge for a drink, and had barely placed an order before learning my table was ready. Actual wait time? 5 minutes tops. read more

All the food in the park is passable. You are never going to leave a restaurant at the park and go wow that is my favorite meal. Most of the workers are temp help from various part of the world. This is one of the few places that isn't a deli or a cafe but an actual sit down restaurant. It doesn't require a reservation. Our table ordered the Bogonese, the Prime Rib and the short ribs. The short ribs were the best of the three. We finished with a hot fudge sundae, it was a huge portion. The hot fudge sundae was good. To be honest probably the best thing we ordered. We were happy to have a sit down warm meal for dinner. What we ordered was $89. We didn't order any drinks. Prices are high for the quality of the food but you are in the middle of no where. If staying in the Old Faithful area this is a good choice for a sit down meal. read more

The most unexpected surprise was how great this place was. There isn't many options for dining in Yellowstone so we weren't coming in with any expectations other than grabbing a quick bite but even with this in mind we left laughing at how great everything was. We didn't have a reservation so we waited about 45 minutes but had a lovely time at the bar where Blake made us some fantastic cocktails; highly recommend the Huckleberry Mule. When we got seated out food came out fast and service was friendly. We tried their curry soup which was delicious and perfect for a rainy night. We both ordered the trout dinner and it was above and beyond what we expected. Very flavorful, super fresh vegetables and an addicting sauce. It's a casual dining hall that we just didn't expect to be leaving so impressed with our meals. Only advice would be to try and snag a reservation in advance if you can to avoid a wait! read more

It was very busy and we asked to keep themmenis as it was stifling hot and needed to fan ourselves. They opened the doors and it did cool off somewhat. The prices are expensive but you're going for the experience and inside the park is always expensive...would I go back...probably not as I'll probably never go back to Wyoming but to anyone who hasn't been...it is an experience so try it once. read more

Terrible service and perhaps racist staff I was watching a video which reminded me of this awful experience we had at this restaurant during our trip to Yellowstone last June. We came to this place after watching the geyser. While the server was cordial, the water boy straight up ignored our table constantly. The guy gave water to all tables around us, including the one that was super close to us. We politely reminded our server but nothing came of it. We went through the entire meal without water and made sure our server knew when we left. However, this whole incident smelled of racism as we were the only brown people in the entire restaurant, and I think the water boy didn't think we deserved water(?!) This was a great dining space at Yellowstone, right near Old Faithful, within walking distance from the popular geyser. We went mid day and had no problem walking up getting a table. Service was quick, and they had seasonal seafood specials. I opted for the trout, and it was one of my favorite on site meals! Alright... after eating here 4 times for breakfast and once for dinner I think I am ready for this review. Let me start off by saying we came into this Yellowstone trip knowing nothing about the food options. Thinking "hey, it's a hotel, there will be food for us" not knowing it was going to snow the entire week as well as have this be our closest dining option. We ate here for dinner our first day because we really had no other option. We got back in late from exploring the park and did not yet know about the (meh) cafeteria across the way in the Ol' Faithful Lodge. So we sucked up the hour wait for dinner and the prices and ate here. I got the roasted chicken which was actually pretty good. But we were disappointed by the fact that we waited so long and not all of the options were available from the menu. From reading the past reviews I was not surprised that the food wasn't available...maybe it doesn't even exist at all. The next 4 days of our trip we only came here for breakfast. The prices were much reasonable. Ordering off the menu is a cheaper option and the food is delicious. I got buttermilk pancakes with chocolate chips and coffee each morning. The coffee is amazing and for only 2.50 and they leave you the whole pot right there at your table. The pancakes are huge too. Breakfast does have a buffet and it includes everything on the menu except bigger items like pancakes. It has little donuts, eggs, bacon, toast, etc. It costs about 14/15 dollars for an adult. So if you have a big appetite go for it. But I preferred paying 6 bucks for a short stack and I was full through lunch. My one main gripe that was ALWAYS consistent no matter the time of day was the wait time for the waiter or waitress to get to your table. The first night I timed it and it was about 12 minutes. I brushed it off as dinner time being busy though. Breakfast had the same issue though. Even when it was not busy and there were only a few tables seated in the whole place we had to wait about 10 minutes for someone to come get to us. We quickly realized ordering drinks and food at the same time made things go a little quicker but service still took long. Of the choices of food the Xanterra (hotel company) based food options are better quality though compared to the other run food places so that's a plus. I would just prefer to have more options in a nice hotel where I am paying a good amount of money to stay there. read more

Amazing food and the staff is friendly and accommodating! I definitely recommend this restaurant if you're coming to the park

We were staying the Old Faithful Inn and could not get a dinner reservation until late in the evening, when a staff member suggested trying the Obsidian Room given that it opened at 5pm and was a first come first served seating. We were greeted warmly by the desk and quickly seated. Our server Abigail N, was polite, professional, patient, and very friendly. She made several suggestions as what to order and we were very pleased overall. Food was good and brought out quickly. From my observations the servers work as a team and it appeared to be well managed. Also found out that everyone essentially stays on the park property during the year in dorm rooms and according to Abigail everyone develops lasting friendships. The dining room itself is nice, nothing fancy, however there are some historical photos scattered around. Anyway, dining there certainly helped us after being on the road day to get to Yellowstone. Out of all of the on-site restaurants in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons this was my least favorite. The bread they gave us to start the meal was not very good at all. Additionally, it was difficult to get refills on drinks, and I did not enjoy my meal (the ravioli). Both the flavor and texture of the ravioli were not good. Though, my dining partner got the fish meal and did enjoy their entree. read more
