Had a deck repair that required an experienced contractor as well as a skilled carpenter (Brian) to handle. Our 25 year old deck had very heavy concrete stairs with only one beam support which was failing (dangerous). Cameron, from day one, was very easy to communicate with. He was straight forward with pricing and gave options and prices up front. The biggest plus was his experience and being able to foresee any possible issues prior to demo. This kept our price at the exact contract point. We replaced the old Trex floor, changed many of the support beams and framing, and replaced a 13' main support beam holding up the stairs. Brian, did an amazing job and his attention to detail was second to none. I could not be more pleased with the final outcome and would highly recommend them to anyone needing a new deck or major repairs to an existing one. OC Deck & Patio helped us with our final phase of an extensive renovation. We needed cable railing for a large terrace created by new retaining walls that replaced our huge old deck. Cameron helped us customize affordable cable railing options that also met the specifications required by the City. Really appreciated his assistance with obtaining the permit to surface mount 153 linear feet of cable railing along the perimeter our new paver area. Brian & Jorge were very meticulous in planning, drilling & mounting the posts. The installation also required custom corners and a custom gate with careful consideration given to each element of the overall project. We also love the harmonious incorporation of matching LED accent lights on posts which really enhances the overall aesthetics at night. In addition, OC Deck & Patio installed 53 linear feet of 1/2" glass windwall in the adjacent backyard. It was important that the height of the glass wall exactly match the height of the cable railing & it was absolutely perfect! Their professionalism & expertise was evident in their approach to every aspect of the job. We were most impressed with the way Cameron & Brian always found viable solutions for everything that needed to be addressed during the installation. Quick summary for those of you on Ritalin: Finished product: 5 Timeliness: 4 Communication: 4 Value: 5 We purchased a home in San Clemente that was built in 1986. It came with a deck overlooking a lovely little canyon filled with life (I call it "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom"). But the deck itself... yuck. Hated it from day one. So after the windows, and the air conditioning, and the floors: it was deck time. As these things go, it was a fairly routine job: we were replacing everything from the floor of the deck upwards. No major changes to the support structure (though in the event a few the aging bits of lumber did need to be replaced). No change to the footprint. We collected several quotes; OC Deck & Patio came in lowest (although I caution that contractor quotes sometimes include apples and sometimes oranges, and you want to be careful about relying on the bottom line only). Contracts signed! Ready, set... wait. The City of San Clemente, for reasons that surpass understanding, dragged out the permitting process on this simple project, requiring, inter alia, full diagrams of *our entire property*. Cameron at OCD&P managed that process for us; at the end of the day, I believe he handled it as well anybody could have done. The costs of dealing with the permitting did come out to be more than I would have wanted or expected, but that's on the city. The demolition takes a couple of days, the material for the deck begins to arrive, construction begins... and boom! Covid. After the initial few weeks of the lockdown, however, we were able to resume. The workers masked up and stayed outside, which was a shame because I'd enjoyed bothering them--I mean, chatting with them--while they worked. But the work did continue. Sure, there were interruptions, and delays, and miscommunications. Nothing too serious, and most of it was the result of the quarantine (a certain kind of nail suddenly became precious, for example). But there was no point at which I was reluctant to pay one of the milestone fees we'd set up in the contract. Most importantly: we are extremely happy with the result. The deck looks great, it feels solid, and songbirds occasionally line up along the cables, making me feel like Snow White (which as a middle-aged father of two I am totally secure enough to admit ). 5 stars for final product Minus 1 star for project management Minus 1 star for delay in paying supplier resulting in lien on property Worked with Cameron and Jeff. Cameron is owner, Jeff is the guy that get's everything done. I generally liked the character of both. Jeff is amazing at his craft, incredibly knowledgable and hard working. If I needed anything I went direct to Jeff as he had more answers and direction on the day-to-day. We love the final product but were consistently disappointed with timelines and overall management. Jeff did the best he could as it's really just a 1 man operation when it comes to actual build out. By the time permits were in hand we were put into a very busy schedule of theirs. All good, Cameron articulated as much. They made best efforts juggling us between other projects. However, Cameron missed a major timeline to order the railing material. Jeff pushed me to get Cameron to confirm delivery as he was waiting for railing. When Cameron followed up with supplier at my request, he learned the order wasn't properly placed and they were given a 5-6 week timeline from that point for delivery which was unacceptable. Cam and Jeff got creative and were able to take on much of the work themselves to move that up which I appreciated. But once we were ready to get it installed it was delay after delay, no commitment on completion, and I unfortunately had to turn into the pestering client to get it done. They finally did and product is great. Then a month later we received a Mechanics Lien on our house because they did not pay Ganahl Lumber for materials, but they had cashed all of our checks. We immediately made OC Deck aware of this. I emailed, called, and texted and no immediate reply. So I went to their office and was told by the receptionist they paid it that day. After my visit Cam responded to my text that it was resolved. This is a good example of my overall experience...while everything got done, it required unnecessary frustration, time, and energy on my part following up on multiple items due to their lack of proactive and professional management. Well intentioned, very skilled, but seemingly spread too thin causing delays and poor project management as described above. read more

We recently engaged Cameron and his team to replace our old second floor wooden deck at our home in Dana Point and to come up with an exciting cantilevered design with waterproof floor to include a spiral staircase giving access from the yard. When he first came to evaluate the project, Cameron's punctuality and professionalism made an immediate positive impression and we were confident we had found the right builder. After we discussed the various design options and materials through several onsite visits, in which Cameron explained what would best suit our home, the project was described in a detailed contract, professional architectural plans were drawn up and an engineering study conducted to ensure the viability of the project. Cameron also steered the project through the permitting process with the City. The whole project was completed on time and the team - Jeff, Jaime and Mike- did the job in a super-efficient manner under Jeff's eagle eye. We were happy that Jeff advised us on several points of detail that came up as the project progressed. We were particularly impressed too by Leo, the fabricator of the most beautiful spiral staircase who also supervised its delivery- craned over the roof in a spectacular operation - and fitted it with total precision. All the men on the team were respectful, punctual and very competent- everyone knew what to do. The materials are top quality, the appearance solid and the finish exceptional. The team cleaned up the site at the end of each day. Jeff is a superb foreman as well as a jack-of-all-trades and Cameron was frequently on site to ensure that everything was proceeding on time and as planned. Since our home is located on a bluff, the elegant new deck with spiral staircase is the talk of the neighborhood and greatly enhances the appearance and value of our home. I had a deck built by Brian Young 1 year ago. There was no stress. The contract was followed. There were no hidden charges. Brian seemed to make amazing progress every day. Yeah, there was a lot of sawdust but you expect that when you use real wood. Brian had arrived at the initial interview with wood samples and I chose a renewable South American hardwood that continues to impress visitors. Brian demonstrated the highest ethics as well as the lowest bid. A year later I would continue to recommend him to anybody. This is a difficult review for me. The negative nature of my review stems from one major issue: Before OC Deck did any work, there were no water leaks or water problems where the deck was added. After their work was complete, and after a major rain storm a month or so ago, a significant water leak was exposed. This leak came through the top inside of the new sliding door OC Deck added, replacing a master bedroom window, to allow access from the bedroom to the deck. Brian came out during that storm and saw the leak. So he had his stucco guy come out. This person "water tested" by spraying water against the door and areas above the door. He concluded that the leak was coming from a half-moon window that existed above the new sliding door. Now this window has been in place since the house was built and no leaks were EVER evident from it. OC Deck's stucco guy claimed it was this window that was the problem even though this window was not touched - well, except for putting new flashing and black paper underneath the window's bottom edge as part of re-flashing, papering and stucco between it and the new sliding door. I paid for a company to come out and look at t the window. I paid for having it re-sealed. However, there was still water leaking from the top of the sliding door after this. I then paid for replacing the half-moon window. During this process, several issues were noted with the flashing, paper and nailing done by OC Deck. I invited Brian to come out during the install of this so that he could see for himself if there were any issues.. He did not come out or respond to my invitation. I took photos as best I could and collected some items to show problem areas and that the leak probably stemmed from the sliding door install. Brian slammed me when I sent him this info - understand I am just the poor customer who paid almost $37,000 to OC Deck alone. He basically said that they did nothing wrong, did everything correctly and washed his hands of any responsibility. I, other hand, have shelled out $1600 more to hopefully fix this. REMEMBER, NO LEAK BEFORE OC DECK did their work! If you decide to use OC Deck, please demand a very, very detailed contract with all aspects spelled out and costed. Brian changed Progress Payments schedules on us without prior consultation - not a huge deal, but be prepared. When I removed some electrical work from the project, he did not deduct that cost claiming he did other things that were above and beyond and therefore it was a "wash". Good luck. read more
