They expect me to pay over $600 out of pocket for a rental car while the damages THEY caused are being fixed. I got a minor flat tire and called AAA for a tow. They sent a driver from Occidental Towing. The drivers name is Erin. After Erin loaded up my car, he said "your front tire is facing the wrong way" (not the same tire as the flat). He readjusted it (shown in the photos) and told me that something is wrong with the tire. When I got to the mechanic shop, our mechanic fixed the flat in 20 minutes, but told us that the tow driver caused damage to the car and it was undrivable until fixed. The mechanic associate told me he would order the parts and contact Occidental Towing to inquire about reimbursement, but I would need to get a rental in the meantime ( we live 2 hours away from shop location and we still needed to get home). I walked 2 miles to the nearest car rental location, and took the cheapest option. It was Friday, and Occidental's office hours are closed on weekends. So first thing Monday morning we contact them about the damage- to which they agreed to pay the cost of repairs. I appreciated this and asked about the cost of the rental, and they totally refused to take responsibility for this part. The manager I spoke to on the phone at Occidental Towing was very rude and hung up on me when I brought up these concerns. I had to pay over $600 for a rental car just to get home and go to work, due to the damage caused by Occidental Towing. Why should I have to pay out of pocket $600+ dollars because their tow driver damaged my car to the point of not being able to drive it? I'm a college student and I pay rent- I don't have money to spend on a rental car while my car is damaged from a janky tow company. Please, Occidental tow company just own up to your mistakes and fix your wrongdoings with honor. Even the mechanics at AAA say it is ridiculous to expect me to pay out of pocket for a rental that I only need due to the damages you caused. In what world is that fair? I will also mention that Erin made some extremely questionable statements during the time that I was a passenger in his car. He talked about the multiple prisons he went to, his 3 DUIs (not what you want to hear when you're a passenger) and worst of all his statements about Mexican people entering our country and how he "does not like the blacks". That is a direct quote. Erin felt comfortable saying these things because I am white, but I in no way am okay hearing these things and the lack of professionalism and morals that he displayed is on par with the company's standards on how they treat their customers after they have done them wrong. Do NOT use this company!!! They are highly unprofessional- I was a single female, hiking in a remote location, with no cellular signal, and completed a multi hour hike (after spraining my ankle mid-hike) only to find my car DISAPPEARED!! I was parked legally. I was told by this company that CHP had ordered it, but that was a flat out LIE!! The call had come through via AAA (which I am not a member) for the road my vehicle was located on, but the call was in a different county!! They took MY vehicle away, without law enforcement and without the presence of owner/proper identification or reason. Stranded a single female in the middle of nowhere where, injured, w/o cell signal... and charged $650 for it. Bc of CHP getting involved at my inquiry, I am getting a refund. But wouldn't trust these people for ANYTHING if you value it and your dollar- bc they sure DO NOT!!! read more

My daughter got a flat tire while out of town on a Friday July 17th, 2026. Occidental Towing towed her to a local shop which was wonderful and helpful. While disconnecting the car the driver said there was now additional damage after the tow. The tow truck driver did not tell the owner of Occidental Towing of damage. The mechanic had fixed the flat quickly yet told my daughter the car was un-drivable and she had to walk to find rent a car while the mechanic tried to reach Occidental Towing. They did not answer until business on Monday morning where the owner took responsibility and agreed to pay for the damage with the mechanic. She got a rental on Friday and drove home hours away. When we called the owner of Occidental Towing asking for reimbursement for the rental he refused to pay for the rental until we brought up going to court. He said sue him. It has been 6 days and car is still in the shop. We have asked for the costs to be covered only for rental and the damage to the car. After yelling at us and making excuses he agreed to pay half which is still unacceptable. They never had us sign a liability waiver either. It is not our fault their driver was incompetent. Also this doesn't even consider lost wages, gas, and hotel to pick up her car and return the rental. This is 100% unacceptable. read more

Cannot recommend them highly enough. When my insurance roadside quote for a tow was outrageous I look for somewhere local. The driver was able to see me in his way back to the office. In addition to the jump start he gave me the best advice I'd heard to keep critters from making nests in your air filters when you don't have a garage. Occidental Towing committed to pick us up, then cancelled after we waited all day. Because they accepted the request, AAA was not trying to source another company for the tow, and it cost us an entire day on the side of the road. By the time they cancelled, most other local companies were closed or closing. We called to express our distress at potentially being left roadside overnight, and the Occidental Towing dispatcher told us another driver could be there in 90 minutes. We accepted, then found out through AAA the second driver was not coming. Poor service, poor management. Would advise that if the company is short-staffed, don't accept contracts you cannot honor. read more

I went through AAA to get a vehicle towed into a repair shop for service. In conversation with the driver, a man by the name of Terry Hansen, I mistakenly said that the "tags are out", when the registration is in fact suspended due to lack of insurance. He used this clerical mistake as an opportunity to tell me his company could be audited for towing an unregistered vehicle, but in exchange for $40 via Venmo, he would "do me a favor". I was unsure how to take this, so informed him that I did not have a Venmo account, and asked him to please come my way so that we could figure it out. Upon arrival, he was argumentative, aggressive, and rude. He refused to tow the vehicle after I refused to give him money via Venmo, and immediately after driving away, he placed a call to AAA, telling them I had swapped either plates or tags on the car in order to make the tow. A blatant lie. AAA believed this lie, and as a result I will be cancelling my membership with them as well. In short, a terrible customer service experience all around. I'll be informing Occidental Towing, and AAA via phone call, that their drivers are attempting to scam AAA customers. UPDATE: As it's been over a year, I feel it's important that I let other possible customers know I've received no response whatsoever from Occidental towing, after calling them regarding the issue. I mentioned Terry Hansen by name, and the woman I spoke on the phone with seemed familiar with him. I described the incident in as great of detail as in the review above. She assured me some action would be taken. However; since the incident, I've seen Terry Hansen pass me driving an Occidental towing vehicle at least 5 times. Once again, this is for any future customers with Occidental towing: TERRY HANSEN IS A SCAM ARTIST, AND OCCIDENTAL TOWING IS AWARE OF IT. THEY WORK THROUGH AAA TO SCAM THEIR CUSTOMERS. My wife and I were staying at an Air bnb in Guerneville, and my truck was having battery issues. Turns out my truck's battery was dead. D-E-D. Dead. I called AAA and Jerry's Occidental towing came out. I needed a battery replacement, and the very nice service tech Daniel told me unfortunately they only do battery replacements sun up to sun down, and can only give me a jump. But that they can return the next day to do the replacement. I got the jump so I can head into town, get some dinner, and enjoy my evening. The next morning I called and for the battery replacement. The service tech Sergio came out and got right to work. Replaced the battery, took the old one, and cleaned up all the little bits. He was in-n-out and didn't take up hardly any time at all! My car broke down last night on the stretch of Highway 12 heading into Sebastopol that narrows down into two lanes. And I'm here to tell you, don't waste your time calling Geico Roadside Assistance, or AAA, first. Call your local tow company first! Then, have Geico or AAA call them to cover the bill (assuming they're contracted). I'm convinced that the reason why tow trucks notoriously take so long is because they're dispatched by roadside assistance and not by the person who actually needs them. After freezing in panic, I call in. First they want me to use an app to report this shit. Nah. I'm talking to a live human. I do, and they said I'd get a dispatch text asap. 30 minutes in~ I'm eagerly waiting off the side of the highway, still waiting for that text. My phone is at 10%, but thank God I travel with my charger. I'm connecting with friends, scrolling insta, etc. Nada. I call back. 45 minutes in~ "They're still working on it". My car battery starts dying, and my lights flicker and dim. My flashers continue to blink, but they're barely noticeable. My car is beeping sounds of death and showing me all these error messages. I'm stranded on the side of the highway, with flashers the brightness of only a candle and no interior lighting. I start shivering. I go into survival mode, wanting to preserve resources. I always keep one of my cozy Shamanic ponchos in my backseat. I put that on, turn inward, breathe. Had a moment. Glimmers of Shipibo ceremony came through. Cars and trucks are whizzing by my invisible car, and I start fearing for my physical safety. I'm working on regulating my breath. 1 hour in~ The Geico agent called back and said she couldn't find a driver and that it would be 4 hours. Dude. No, no, NO. I'm in the pitch dark at this point. I begged her to keep trying, try Petaluma... Cotati... hell, Novato/San Rafael... Marin. There's gotta be someone within an hour radius of me. I'm not sitting here for 4 hours on the dark highway with no lights, and I'm not leaving my car. She seems really put out by me... and I get the sense that she's probably working from home smoking a blunt. So I get off the phone with her frustrated AF, and I just call Occidental Towing myself. And guess what, they have a driver who's already in Sebastopol, and he shows up within 5 MINUTES. WTF GEICO. I call them back, livid, letting them know that I have it covered since I took it upon myself to take care of it since they couldn't do their job. I'm happy to give them the bill though. How is this possible?!... I'm still pissed a day later writing this. So Eben Altier, my hero, shows up and is such a sweetheart! Instant bestie. Getting me home and backing down my narrow farm property in the dark with overgrown trees was a whole other adventure itself. I only started crying when I filled out the paperwork at the end. Why then and not on the highway?... because it was over. #damselindistress This AM, having learned my lesson, I set up a tow from my home to the shop first, THEN called Geico... they say they only reimburse one tow per breakdown and that they can't cover my tow to the shop for this one. I proceed to TURN INTO A KAREN. Oh hell f*****' no. I fought it, got the name of the blunt-smokin' agent from last night, and got them to cover the bill again. I WILL be writing a scathing review for Geico, but I will not mention her name here because I don't agree with public slander. I then visit my landlady on the farm first thing in the morning and tell her that we might want to prune our overhanging trees in the driveway, LOL. #karen So Mark, my other new tow truck bestie brought me to the shop this morning... he's great. I love these guys! They're smart, honest, and hardworking gentlemen. I have so much respect for these blue collar men. THIS is where it's at, humanity. In my opinion, these people are way more intelligent than any corporate executive. When the sh** hits the fan, these are the people we want to be friends with. Not the help desk of corporate America. I'll spare you the rest of the grueling details of my journey, but I'm wanting to convey an important message here for the people I care about. Companies do not have our back. Corporations do not have our back. COMMUNITY. Communing heart to heart with our everyday working class citizens, THAT'S the gold. Occidental Towing, Eben, Mark... you have my heart. Geico, you can f*** off. I much rather foot the bill of any tow than ever deal with them directly again. They separated my Suzuki DRZ400SM from my trailer, that It was locked! and chained too! Then they towed them to different yards. They stole my brand new Generator. Kevin, our tow driver was kind enough to allow us to ride in his cab with our vehicle on the bed. He was very thorough in appropriately getting our car on the bed, and checking the security of all the strapping required to secure the car. He carefully navigated Hwy 1 and made our long ride as pleasant as possible. Kevin's knowledge of cars and his experience was evident. Car battery died while in Bodega Bay. Made the call for towing at 3pm and they gave me a possible 2-3hr wait time. Luckily the truck showed up within 90min because the technician was already out in the area helping other people. The technician installed the battery and was done in less than 45min. It was about $300 for the whole thing (battery install and delivery) but great service and timing for a roadside emergency in the middle of nowhere. read more

So, I was embarking on a 56 mile ride around Kings Ridge, starting from Monte Rio. About halfway through the ride, I had the unfortunate pleasure, of finding out what its like to hit the ground at 40 miles an hour, when my bicycle's front tire blew out on the steep descent on the back side of Kings Ridge. After my brother assessed the damage to my bike and to my self (possible concussion, possible hip fracture, possible shoulder rotator cuff damage), I realized I couldn't continue the ride. I immediately thought of calling for an ambulance or AAA, but I had zero service, and was in dire pain, trying to walk to find signal. Be it luck, coincidence, or something more divine, just as I was giving up on walking, a beautiful yellow tow truck came around the corner. It may have been my feeble attempt to flail my arms, but I prefer to think that the driver (whom later introduced himself as Terry), could see I was in trouble and pulled over. He was on his way to pick up a car, and offered to radio for an ambulance, or said he would come back and get me, if I could wait. I declined the ambulance, and graciously accepted his offer to wait (I had never used AAA to tow a bicycle before, but I had been paying extra for the service for a few years now, and I was not missing the opportunity to see a bicycle on the back of the flat bed). Terry, came back about 20 minutes later, as he promised. He got my bike secured, and made sure I had help getting into the truck and we were on our merry way. Despite having my bell rung, I had a very engaging conversation with him. He was quite cheery and humorous. Made for a good recovery ride, all the way back to where my car was parked. We were on a family vacation and got a flat tire on a lonely stretch of Highway 1 in California. A Park Ranger told us where to go. They were closed. It was about 7pm on a Monday night when I saw a Occidental Towing truck. I asked the driver who could help me and he said they could. I called and spoke with Erin (I hope I spelled that correct) and she yes they have a used tire. We went there and she found us a tire and switched it out for us on the rim. She also gave us a jack to use and we were good to go. All this help when they were closed for regular business. There was also a young guy there trying to help us also. Occidental Towing recently towed my sick car from the wilds of west Marin-almost-Sonoma County to a repair shop in San Rafael. The experience could not have been more positive. They provided an estimate of under an hour to arrive, and they beat the estimate, keeping me informed every step of the way. Paul, the driver, was friendly and engaged and a real pro--he backed his enormous truck into my driveway and cleared the fence beautifully. It was clear that he knew what he was doing, and he hitched up my car quickly and with care. That's the impression I was left with--I felt in capable, caring hands, and that's important to me. Having my sweet old car break down wasn't fun, but the silver lining is that I know about Occidental Towing in case the situation arises again. Got a flat and insurance arranged a tow through Occidental. The driver left our car UNLOCKED overnight at a closed tire shop. He had our numbers and didn't call to let us know that the shop was closed or anything. Unfortunately, online info was incorrect and said that auto shop would be open and that is why the insurance company arranged for it to be taken there. Luckily nothing happened to the car but the shop said that vehicles are regularly broken into athrough there. Really disappointed in this service and would not recommend. read more

Need to have a tow since my car won't start. Called my insurance, found a mechanic shop (23 miles away) and scheduled a time for my car to be picked up. Sounds easy enough... Long story short: - I am now on day 3 after contacting the tow company multiple times to have a scheduled tow. - Have been rescheduled 7 times in the span of the last 3 days, both for same day rescheduling and next day. None have actually been fulfilled. - I have had to call to reschedule and notify them that I have not had my car towed since they are unaware of who has and have not been towed. - Have not received a single courtesy call. - I personally had to call to reschedule because they wouldn't call and tell me they were late or wouldn't arrive. - They lost track of my appointment and assumed I had already been towed, but this was only discovered after I called on day two and after the 4th rescheduling. - I have yet to have my car towed and will have to wait until tomorrow for my latest scheduled tow appointment... which I expect to hear will be canceled and rescheduled, or even my appointment lost/overlooked, as was done before. While I understand having a busy business is a "burden", I don't see how multiple scheduled tows over 72 hours can be this difficult to manage, nor the total absence of courtesy calls to notify customers who are waiting on a tow is something that cannot be overlooked. Telling a customer that you are very busy doesn't mend or explain the lack of service, it only highlights how disorganized and mismanaged the business is. - Value for money: well, at $10 a mile to go 23 miles/35 mins, and having to wait over 3 days.. there ZERO VALUE FOR MONEY - Respond quickly: NOPE... not even remotely close. I haven't been called or contacted, and still haven't been towed. - Reliability: The only thing I can depend on is them being late or a total no-show, and not notifying me that my car will not be towed If you are having to resort to this company, I hope you have saved all your hopes, wishes, and prayers, since outside of those measures, you are at the whim of poor service and total lack of reliability. read more

Called AAA past noonish today, and received a call back almost immediately from Occidental Towing. Terry arrived in a beyond timely manner and was extremely kind and helpful. I explained situation, he mentioned what was "wrong" casually, and said I was lucky of my circumstances to safety and engine preservation (and boy was he right). What do you know, I looked long and hard at my engine before pickup, but after his departure of dropping off my van, turns out alternator belt totally snapped, just as his casual suspicion! Had electrical issues (battery & alternator) with our truck coming home from camping. Stranded on Hwy 116 in the middle of nowhere. John "JC" came out first, determined it was the alternator. I had an exceptional experience with Terry Hansen at Occidental Towing. My RV sat in my driveway too long and the battery died. Terry Hansen came out to try to start it and it simply wouldn't start. He tried for quite a while and then said I'd need to call for a battery truck the next day. However, early the next morning he called and said he had looked up my RV model online because it didn't make sense to him why it wouldn't start and he'd like to come back that morning and try again. Who does that?? I was speechless. And he did come and worked on it for at least an hour and got it to start. The best part is that we needed the RV the next week to evacuate due to the fires and I don't know what we would have done with Terry. Thanks again, Terry, for everything. read more
