I worked at Ocean Cafe. I received a call from a customer who suffered from celiac disease about whether or not the chicken was prepared with gluten. I went into the kitchen to look at the ingredients in the cooking spray I had seen the cooks use when they grill the chicken. It contained wheat, soy, and milk products. I suggested she order the California Salad, but I was told that I should have lied to the customer by a fellow employee. I didn't feel that lying about food allergies or diseases caused there from was a very moral or professional way to handle a customer's concerns. read more

I'm not a fan of this place. I've been a couple of times, and both times the employees were unfriendly and discourteous. The soup is pretty good, but overpriced (~$4 for a small cup; ~$6 for a bowl). The last time I went I had the vegetable summer rolls, which are not traditional summer rolls - the one I had was mostly mixed greens with a bit of other vegetables. Came in with my friend an hour before close and was told that we could not be sat and that the last order would be taken at 3:30, which was 30 minutes before close. When we carried out our food there appeared to be a customer on his lunch break who was eating his take out in his car because he was not allowed to sit in the restaurant regardless of the fact that it was still open and not closing for another hour. I've been getting take out lunch from here for a few months now. A friend recommended it to me. I've enjoyed almost everything. The summer rolls and soups are great. Especially the tuna summer roll and the lentil soup. But I've tried several of each and they are all good. I've also gotten the summer salad. The first time I got it it was great. Lots of portabella mushrooms and grilled zucchini...mixed greens. Delicious! That first time must have had a guest chef cooking because all the times I ordered it after that was not as good (I tried at least 3 more times hoping to get the first version again)...instead it was almost all iceberg lettuce with weak amounts of grilled veggies. I can not say enough positive things about this place! The chicken chili is my favorite. I travelled from Florida for three days and had to have it twice while here. Usually I associate healthy food with having little to no taste, and am not excited to eat it, but Ocean Cafe changed my mind. Things I would recommend that I have had: -Lentil Soup -Chicken Chili (beware, it is hot!) -California Salad -Chicken Lettuce Cups -Tofu summer roll I was very impressed with their food, it all tasted VERY fresh. The jury is still out on this place for me. I work in Red Bank, so I've eaten everywhere. The food is pretty good, but it's overpriced for what you actually get. Some of the waitresses are very friendly, but others are not. In particular, the manager and a young Latina girl were very rude to me. I had to ask several times for salt and pepper while they were chatting away with each other when there were no other customers in the restaurant. Also, the Latina girl was not properly groomed and her hygiene was questionable, at best. Otherwise, the restaurant seemed very clean. It also bothered me that they only serve one type of bread. Again, the place didm;t get "three stars" because of the rudeness of the two staff members. That made all of the difference to me, especially as a repeat customer! read more

Yay, I'm a fan OF THE FOOD. Ocean Cafe is close to my office. The food is always fresh and delicious. The price can be a little high on some items, but worth every penny for taste and again, freshness. I will say, I have to agree with a lot of the others here about the staff. I've been in the restaurant to order take out a dozen times, and have yet to feel welcome. The staff seem to all have BRF (B***** Resting Face). I'd probably visit more often, but the staff is such a turn off, I tend go elsewhere and not be looked upon as a nuisance. read more

I absolutely love this place!!!! The food is plenty and delicious and the cost is low. They're food is considered on the healthier side and I love that. I usually get the grilled chicken whole wheat wrap and it's simply delicious... I've had wraps many times but never a huge fan at all... This place forget it... That good!!! I have also tried their avocado wrap with chicken and the avocado wrap with shrimp... Enjoyed both. I have also tried the Thai's chicken wrap which was also very good. I always get the wheat and honestly I think it's better than the white. I ordered their chicken chili, the carrot ginger soup, the portabella mushroom soup, the chicken noodle soup and their lentil soup and all are DELICIOUS!!! Their green iced tea is too faint in taste, it pretty much just tastes like water so I would not recommend ordering that. I will say that the staff I like but their is one girl who is a bit or miss when taking your order... She's very nice but by the end of the night she seems like she just wants to hurry up and get out... Ok I get that but she seems like you are an annoyance and that is something I don't care for. This is the worst place I have ever been! The food was okay but the employees give you horrible service. I work for a hospital and I went to pick up lunch and I called the wrong location because they only advertise 2 on their website. The 2 of 3 are five minutes away from each other. Instead of them helping me and just replacing my order at the location I already drove to on my lunch break they made me leave and pick up the order down the street. Ocean Cafe is my go-to healthy restaurant. The Tuna Summer Roll is fantastic, and I also love the Tuna Teriyaki wrap. My new favorite is the California Salad with their fat free carrot ginger dressing! Butternut squash soup & chicken chili are perfect every time. I also enjoy their fresh green iced tea. Have not had a problem here yet, and I eat here at least 3 times per week. My only wish is that they would add fresh fruit salad, otherwise it's heaven for me! read more

I go there weekly because I like their chicken chili and juices, however for the second time now I've been told that they've already cleaned the juice machines over an hour before they're set to close for the day! I was surprised to see the negative reviews. My fiancee and I stopped to eat here during the wedding walk on Sunday and had a very good experience. Even though every table was filled, the servers were quick and attentive. The soup and sandwich combos are great. There are a lot of choices for both and my ahi tuna sandwich was awesome. Everything was fresh and light yet filling and satisfying. I was a huge fan of the bread that they use. It's got that crispy outer crunch and soft airy middle that makes any sandwich delectable. I was driving through New Jersey and needed to stop for lunch and I stumbled upon Ocean Café in Manalpan. Without having prior knowledge of the type of food that the café specialized in (healthy alternatives), the waitress staff was extremely helpful in finding something that suited my tastes. I ended up deciding on a Chicken Lettuce wrap, the tofu roll and green iced tea. Service was great, despite the restaurant being crowded, was in and out within 30 minutes and never had to grab the attention of the wait staff once. Warning! This restaurant added more money to my credit card even after leaving a decent tip. I suspected something was going on the second time but the third time I confronted the waitress who made up some weird story claiming they always add more money and then make adjustments at the end of the day. Well the adjustment that was made was I was not charged at all probably because she did not expect me to confront her and was afraid that I was going to call the police because this is stealing. The only reason I knew that this was happening is because my credit card company immediately sends me a text when I get charged. I had the receipt in my hand for $8.03 and the text came that I was charged $10.03. If i did not get this text I would have had to wait till my statement came in the mail or when I had a chance check my statement online. I usually don't have time for that. These places count on that fact and now don't even care to try to conceal their fraud. I called the credit card company and they were the least bit interested to pursue this issue.
