My husband and I have a thing where we stop at every casino we come across on our road trips. This was one of those casinos. As many times as we had gone back and forth through here, we had never taken the extra time to stop in. I may or may not go back. Not because of anything particular or bad, but because it's off the beaten path of where I'm usually at, and not a lot of areas to stay nearby. Nice and clean casino have decent amount of games both with dealers and electronic machines

It's certainly not Vegas, People. I don't know what people expect from a small city casino. The only table games have virtual dealers. There's also a machine controlled roulette table. It's the slots that draw all the seniors (not the college kind) out of their Ocean Pines senior living communities. First things first, there is plenty of parking, although it was December 1st, not July 1st when I visited. There are plenty of slot machines; mostly penny slots. My [senior] mother wanted to "just check" this place out. We came on our way to lunch. We signed up for their club card. We lost $20.00 each in under 30 minutes. I'm not sure if this was a special, but when we signed up they loaded our card with $10.00 to use if we came back the next day. You must play this; you can't cash it out. So, on our way home the next morning we popped in. We vowed to use just their money. We played the slots. I played a penny slot machine and won $45.00! I cashed that out quickly and still had $5.00 of their money, so I played another and won $42.00! I cashed that out too! My mom? She won $40.00 on an Elvis slot machine. Thank you Ocean Downs. We usually head to Ocean Downs once a year when we are in Ocean City. The casino use to be slots only, which didn't interest me. The casino added table games a little over a year ago. Craps, roulette, blackjack and poker. The dealers and pit bosses were very friendly and seem to be well trained. I never saw a cocktail server during the 30 mins I played. After making my "donation"at Roulette. We walk out to the live Harness Racing (which runs June-Sept). We bet on 5 races and enjoyed ourselves making our $2 bets. They have a snack & beverage tent outside plus the Pacers dining room where you can watch the horses run while enjoying a sit down meal. They have Poseidon's Pub for dinner & pub food which also overlooks the track. 2 out of 7 in our group won $. The casino use to give $10 free play for your birthday month but no more. They seem real tight with any credits and you have to renew your casino card yearly. Something to do on a rainy day or when they have the live racing. read more

The signs at door says you must be 21 to enter. This is not a place for children. No this is not a Las Vegas type casino!! Do not go to this casino if Las Vegas is your yardstick for comparison. (Yes, I have been to Vegas 3 times in last 6 year and Atlantic City once in last 2 years.) There are no scantily clad show girls, no entertainment or shows, only 2 eateries, no expensive shops, no adjoining hotel, and no slick costumed dealers. However, there is also no LA airfare and car rental, if you are from the east coast. I decided to spend my gaming money in my home state. The entire place is smoke free and handicap accessible per MD and federal law. There are lots of 1 cent slots and a variety of other denominations. High rollers should go to Vegas or Atlantic City, NY. For the $50-$75 I budget to gamble 3-6 times annually, this place is more than sufficient. The women's bathrooms were cleaner than in Vegas or Atlantic City!! The fish of the day was Wahoo (sandwich and fish & Chip) at the Dine N Dash joint for $9. The tables and dining area were also super clean and service friendly. I especially enjoyed that the entire place is smoke free. No smoke filtering in from the smoking area, not having to walk through smoke to get to the food area or bathroom. Thank U MD!! I expect our local entrepreneurs to complement this start-up with places very near by for entertainment & more eating choices. I lost $46. My partner won $140. If you absolutely need to gamble, there are plenty of Slot machines. But this would not be a place to come with friends for a drink or night out. There is NOWHERE to sit. There are 2 bars. One had no seating the other has individual seats separated by glass. But you have to use the slot at the seat. As far as food there was a cafeteria with hot dogs and pizza. We asked for a chili dog with cheese. They forgot to add the cheese. Asked for napkins. Didn't give us napkins The worse part the workers are by far the rudest people I've ever encountered. Went there one rainy night because we couldn't go to the beach. I think the tables games were just added because my friend said that there weren't any table games before. I'm a blackjack player so I headed straight for the tables. They were all full and it was a Tuesday night. I looked around and also asked if all the blackjack tables were continuous shuffle, they were. I never play on the continuous shuffle tables because they suck but that's all they had so I sat down and played. Some of the dealers must have been new because they couldn't count, the players couldn't count , and they didn't know basic strategy. The overall atmosphere in the casino was sad. Nobody was winning- not even the slot players. I couldn't even tell you if they were playing peppy music, if I can't remember then the music couldn't have been that great. This review is not for the Casino but the racing side of the operation. Really for the experience that is Pacer's Restaurant that is open on racing nights. I understand that many things have changed as a result of the pandemic. But in my opinion if you can't do even a reasonable job in supplying services then don't even try. 3 years ago you could get a reasonable meal served at your table. Now there is a "grab and go" menu of pre prepared foods that are just awful. No works at any of the betting' machines. Only one unit that was out of order to redeem you winning vouchers. If you can't supply the basic service's then just give it up and let the racing support itself. Go somewhere else for an early dinner and stop by to see the horses run. I didn't mind this place as much as I thought I would, even though we did lose money. The joint is open 24/7, but they still do not have any table games. Apparently that is coming in a few months. Essentially everything is electronic. Slots, electronic poker, blackjack and roulette and craps. It was very interesting to see how these games worked. They essentially have stations, where it is like virtual reality. There is a large screen with a dealer standing in front of you and an electronic table. So it feels like the real thing. You get to sit at the table with ur friends and enjoy it. The roulette was electronic betting, but a real glass encased wheel with a ball that rolled out. Craps was similar, with electronic betting and a glass bubble that encased the dice, so real dice! We had a fun time. I am annoyed at electronic blackjack bc I don't trust that the casino doesn't have some program running to ensure they win. Also, they take ur drinks from you at around 3 or 4, I wish we wouldn't be bothered with that. The biggest annoyance is that it is about a 30 min ride from the beach. If ur there late night, you have to call a cab to come get you, and that takes another 30min of wait time. read more

Pretty small and cute casino. I had trouble winning anything in this place and they don't give any great incentives with their bonus card especially for new guests. They have a small little cafe that makes the best coffee. The slots machines are updated but you have to be pretty lucky to come out ahead. My father is always lucky and seemed to do well in here. Great place for something different to do at the beach. My family has been coming here for years and now with gambling legal in Maryland it has certainly changed. The horse races are trotters. The jockeys ride in a cart behind the horse. The "starting gate" is just a white pick up truck with a retractable gate. The horses trot up to it and when everyone is lined up the truck hits the gas and gets out of the way. I would double check your ticket once you make your bet. I had asked for a "show" and was given "place" my horse got third (so I lost). I wasn't out lot of money but just the principle. I will admit it was the first time in the years we have gone there that it has happened. There is lots of seating but I would recommend bringing something to sit on as the seats can get uncomfortable. The casino is small compared to some others in Maryland. Lots of slot machines and not many table games. If you're a young person, note that they will ask for your ID every time you turn around. I understand asking at the door but I shouldn't have to show my ID more than once. Wish they would give wristbands or something to avoid that. read more

Craps Banker Loses Control of Table to Don't Players I love the casino game of craps and my wife and I are fairly good at playing it. If you know how to play craps, you know that most people will play the Pass Line and do not play the Don't Pass line. As you read on, here is why you don't want to play craps at Ocean Downs. On Memorial Weekend my wife and I went to Ocean Downs because we know most of the craps dealers. Here is how the night unfolded. We both went to their newer craps table which has a prop bet called the Fire Bet. We started to roll and 3 guys, who probably had been drinking, joined the table and dropped their buy-in money directly where I was tossing the dice. That was the first sign of them not knowing the proper way to play the game. It got worse when they started playing the D'ont Come and then the D'ont Pass bets. Again as I was ready to toss the dice, they placed late bets in the field cutting across where I toss my dice. The banker said no more late bets, but they ignored her and threw their late bets down anyway. I never said a word during all this poor play and disrespect of the other players around the table. I tossed the dice for almost 5 minutes and it got even worse. Two guys decided to have a loud conversation about "never say SEVEN at the Table. Now they started putting bets in the Field area of the table, just as I tossed the dice. I still remained quiet. I continued to roll for about 15 minutes and all during my roll, these guys keep saying "You can't say 7 at the table" but they continued to say it louder and LOUDER. After I seven'ed out and finished my turn, I said, "You guys should learn some etiquette about playing craps." Next was my wife's turn to roll the dice and they started with the late bets again. I told the stick person to take the dice back to the middle of the table and told the banker, "Either make the troublemakers quit disrupting the game or leave or else we will leave. So we waited for the pit boss to come over and they said Security was called. After 10 minutes of waiting, one Security person arrived. My wife felt it was being handled so she proceeded to get the dice back and take her turn. While the pit boss was talking to one of the guys, the other 2 were still doing late bets and exclaiming "Don't say SEVEN!!!" After my wife finished her turn, we decided we were done being disrespected by the rowdy players and the uncontrolled play that was permitted by the casino staff. I told the banker, who all this time really lost control of the table, "If you want players like them that is fine, but we will NOT BE BACK!!! The banker did not maintain order and control the table, allowing rowdy players to harass and disrespect the other players at the table. This should have been addressed by all casino staff at the very start but it was handled very poorly and allowed to continue so long. So DON'T go there to play craps. The dealers do a great job but this was the worst I have ever seen in playing craps in many casinos for over 20 years. read more

good location. lots of parking. clean. but that is about it. I don't really play slots and that seems to be the main thing there. but there are a lot. I mostly played the texas hold em table game. was looking for a real poker room but there doesn't seem to be any around the beach areas. Dealers said you have to go to AC, phlly or DC. such a bummer. anyway. that table game surely had to fixed. I have played that game at several casinos all over the US and yes the house wins more than loses. i played for about 3.5 hours and I have NEVER seen the dealer win 8 or 9 hands out of 10. The dealers were nice so nothing wrong there - I dont think. but the shuffle machine -- since they have to tell it how many players -- surely is rigged for the house. it was just way to suspicious. imho. Really, I'm not that picky when it comes to casinos. I don't expect a Las Vegas or Atlantic City quality gambling house to be found at a race track near Ocean City. But I do look for three things in a casino and this didn't deliver on any of them. These three things are: 1) An atmosphere of excitement with hawt dealers to look at. Now I was there around midnight, so the crowd was bound to be a little down (i.e. homeless people come into a few dollars). But there were only video table games. As in a filmed representation of a dealer while live people sat at a table! No live, hawt dealers. Now, mind you, I don't mind internet porn. But I don't think computerized dealers are the wave of the future. They have no personality. 2) A buffet to justify my being in a casino while I'm unemployed. I don't find it so bad to waste government largesse if there's a lot of food involved. The simple cafe this place has, while thankfully inexpensive, did not really add any value to my late night stop. Though their pasta was decent. In a depressed casino sort of way. 3) A parking lot to sleep in after I get really drunk on cheaper casino beer. First of all, I have to say that it was brilliant design of them to put every video poker machine - my addiction - in the place at the bar. But that's where my enjoyment ended. Despite being inside a casino, the beers were actually about $1.00 *more* than in Ocean City proper. And the casino closes at 2:00 a.m. I ended up sleeping in a shopping center parking lot across the street. Sure most people get hotels in Ocean City *before* leaving Washington D.C. and that's my fault. But what casino closes at 2:00 a.m.? Especially in a vacation town. That's my point. In a recent issue of Washington D.C.'s Express newspaper, it was reported that Maryland's two casinos made the state $15.5 million in July. And if this is what the other one's like as well, I'm wondering how. Then again, with how quickly my $5.00 disappeared, maybe I can see how they brought in so much revenue last month. read more

The same can be said for every "Casino" that opens up without tables games or any knowledge of what a casino really is. This place is a race track, that happens to have slots not a casino. "The Good" - The race track, it's what this place used to be and therefore it is done well. Its not the best race track in the world, but its pretty cool for what it is. - Smoke Free, at least they have the guts to do it, unlike Atlantic City so good for the effort. "The Meh" - Size may matter and I know the casino floor is not a sprawl, it is located the main entry into the park and is a single floor. - They have not made the commitment to the floor design as the chairs are not secured to the floor, they have a wide base so you have a little chance to fall off, however it is still a little off. "The Bad" - The drinks are not free therefore it is not a casino. - Their attempt at table games reminds me of a bad 80s movie on what the future will be like, there are Atari like table games that are "supposed" to simulate - The red tape factor. For an example, Beer is $4.10 for a draft and $4.90 for a bottle, you would think that a bean counter in the front office would make the bartender's lives a little easier with the beverage tax that just came through... but no. read more

So....yah. One star, here goes. My boyfriend had never been to a casino..and I thought, well damn..let's go see what this one has...we're in a vacation town...on vacation. Looks like the people backing this place have shelled out some bucks to make it look appealing - I was excited! Should've looked it up on Yelp, could've prevented a lame experience, would've saved some money. I've been to better casinos in Whatcom County, Washington in the boonies than this one! No card tables, no restaurant really....lots of slots that were not all that appealing...and that's about it. After about an hour of wandering around and playing a few slots, we were ready to go. I'm bummed that this wasn't a better experience because now my boyfriend doesn't think Vegas would be all that fun...based off of this. Bleh! You really haven't lived until you've been at this casino on Christmas night. If you're looking for some of the best people-watching, this is the place for you. The only redeeming star that saves this review from a 1-star review is the fact alone that it is open on Christmas night. It used to be an old racetrack, but once slots were legalized in MD, the casino was added. However, it has brought a lot of jobs to the area. Since there are no true table games (as of yet, that is), everything is virtual. Virtual slots, virtual blackjack, virtual poker, etc. The average age of this casino is about 1,000 years old. It explains the penny and nickel slots for the Ocean Pines retirees. We went and I lost a quick $20. Not wanting to lose anymore, I saddled up to the bar. And waited. And waited. And waited. Several cocktail waitresses refilling soda and water smiled at me from behind the bar, never once asking "Can I help you?" or "Let me get the bartender for you." And when the bartender did show up, service or speed was not of the essence. There's a reason why people travel to DE and Atlantic City to gamble. Ocean Downs Casino is open...but beware the posted hours say they open at 8 AM but that is only for slots, which is not noted. Table games don't start till 10 AM but then you have to wait another 30 minutes if you want to play Blackjack while they set up the table. So much for customer service here! read more

This place looks like fun from the outside but once inside the place is horrible, and yes I did actually come out ahead on the slots. When I went outside to the smoking area I noticed that everyone out there was an employee. They were all complaining about the operations and acting very unprofessional. In other words the staff seemed to be hanging out, which surprised me. The Security was harassing people for the most obscure reasons. One guy was swarmed by four security guards for eating a piece of pizza outside. This other guy went into the wrong door when going to the bathroom. It's not like he was a creepy guy who went all the way in...he was an older gentleman who was shocked when he realized what had happened. We have all done that at one point in our lives right? They swarmed him as well and clearly caused a scene just like the guy eating pizza. Clearly overstaffed and under qualified, the staff at Ocean Downs haven't a clue how to treat their patrons. This is a clear indicator that upper management needs an overhaul as well. My family and I will never go back, the pizza guy won't, and the old guy who needed glasses will not either. Add in friends and family, and they probably lost dozens of patrons that night. If you expect professional, courteous, knowledgeable, trained, and friendly staff please don't waste your time going there, just go to the beach and expect better service from the midway employees who can barely speak English. I have to agree with most of the other reviews. The best part of this visit was the casino is smoke free. No smoking inside. Period. Dad and I spent about 2 hours here on the penny slots. Then we moved to the electronic roulette table where we each won more money. I never saw any card tables with dealers. Only the videos. Not the same. I enjoyed the fact that there were slot machines built into the bar. The casino is fairly small so it makes it easier to find your friends when they wander off to find their own luck. While our wallets were not any fatter than when we arrived they weren't any smaller either. Yay for us! There is also live horse racing/track betting on site. read more

Was playing money on the 16, 17, 18 line as well as black. While I won big on black, I also won big on this line as it hit on 17 black. While they paid me for winning on black, they neglected the fact that I won on 16, 17, and 18. After asking for a review from the official dealer, I was told by him "I saw it" and that i was wrong.
