This was the most horrible seafood restaurant I have ever been to. Nothing on the menu was fresh - not yesterday and not today. My crab cakes were 99.9% breading & 1% crab (if it even was crab). My friend's food was unrecognizable. Everything is breaded & fried, and then fried again. I'm told this place has been in Statesboro a long time. I think they're still serving the same fish. The decor is from the 50's which would be okay if the place were retro. It's not. It's just old & tired. Only Gordon Ramsey with his Kitchen Nightmares could fix this place. read more

This is a regular spot for my parents and friends, my 2nd time here and so far consistently good. Good value and portion size. If you are planning to eat at Ocean Galley, you should make other plans! The value just isn't there! They upcharge for a salad when the menu clearly says 2 sides with entre and salad is in the list. The food was only edible at best and 5 shrimp and 5 scallops( bay scallops or stingray wing, I'm not certain) and the scallops were the size of a dime. A 13.00 lunch turns into 20.00. I swore I would never eat there the last time (which was the first time) and I decided to give them another shot. Bad decision on my part! Never again! This place has really gone downhill. I ordered fried shrimp and oysters. The seafood was so overcooked. Really only could identify one oyster that sort of tasted like it should. The other "oysters" were only breading that was cooked hard. Grits were cold and no salt and certainly no cheese that I could taste. The cole slaw tasted like it always has and very good. This is a hidden gem that looks rather uninviting if you ask me. The sign off the main road didn't catch my eye at all. I only drove into the parking lot for another reason, but upon seeing the crowds flocking in and out, I pulled out my phone to find its menu. Obviously it caught my eye as here I sit reviewing my dinner. I had a bowl of clam chowder. It caught my eye although I was worried it wouldn't be enough food. Don't worry, it is and maybe your waitress will be kind enough like mine was to show me the size of the bowl. The chowder has corn, which I've never had in my chowder before. Initially I was worried, but for no reason because the soup was tasty and it was all gone! They'll even ask you your cracker preference. When the brought out saltines instead of oyster crackers, my waitress apologized and quickly fixed the problem! I also tried out their fried green tomatoes. It was quite a generous serving. Not the best I've ever had, but I had an empty plate at the end of the night. My dinner mate had the fried alligator (very tasty!), and two other fried fish - possibly the flounder was one of them? Going downhill fast. Went to Ocean Gallery and was very disappointed. Upon entering the staff was laughing and talking with each other. When my ordered was bought out it was wrong. So she took it back and I had ordered bone in catfish so she bought my back a goldfish. Drinks was not refilled and the good sweet hush puppies have been replaced with foam balls. Let's start off by being honest - the food here is not particularly good. It's your standard fare "fried everything" seafood joint. I should have known better than to order scallops, but they were definitely dug from the far reaches of a freezer and then cooked to absolute death so the texture was sort of like chewing on a really buttery tasting tire. The fried shrimp, though, was actually pretty good. HOWEVER, the service is what earned this place the stars. My aunt fell in the parking lot as we were walking up, and the staff was more than helpful. A man in a collared shirt (didn't catch his name, he may have been the manager) came out to help, then brought us bandages for her scraped knee and offered to help put them on. Our server, Sam, was very sweet and attentive without being overbearing. Overall, everyone was very kind and helpful, which I appreciated. I'm certain that if this restaurant tried a little harder with fresher ingredients and a little more caution on fry times (and an update to the interior and bathrooms, eek), they could really crush it. I didn't have to wait at all for refills, she gladly offered to get me more of their "swamp" sauce when I complimented it, and she had a genuine smile on her face the entire time she served me and my girlfriend), the dining area and bathroom were spotlessly clean, and the catfish, gator tail, and shrimp all were cooked to perfection. The music was enjoyable and appropriate for a family environment, as was the wall decor (I also noticed that they are sponsors for the local recreational sports teams, a big plus for me). The food was delivered very shortly after ordering, surpassing my expectations. This being my first impression of this place, I am pleasantly surprised. They offered a huge variety of various seafood platters and my husband tried the Red Snapper, scallops and shrimp. He said it awesome. We tried the tuna dip, wonderful ! Had an order of Spuds, Covered with a warm sour cream mixture, lots of cheese and bacon and wonderful spices, if you go you HAVE to try them! I had the steak, which was seasoned well and very tender.
