Positives are low prices on items like Bobs Red Mill products, makeup, hand soap, etc. but you have to be selective so you don't overpay on items that are cheaper elsewhere. The store needs a "facelift" or updating, always seems dirty or dingy when I visit. Sign up for their loyalty card for additional savings. Great clearance sales at the end of each season, but products go fast, so if you really need something you see in the flyer go quickly. read more

Feels like Christmas morning every time I shop! There is new merchandise all the time, but the same stuff doesn't always reappear. I found a cute knit button up 3/4 sleeve blouse in my size in a coral shade. I got a great price on my find. The next time I shopped there, that MACY's rack was gone. My boyfriend went to Ocean State and ended up leaving his cart and walked out. He told me there about a DOZEN customers ahead of him. There were only TWO registers open. Not ONE manager was paying attention and were just walking around with their heads in the clouds. He said Ocean State is now on his "list" of places he will never patronize again. I have always heard rave reviews regarding the world of Ocean State Job Lot, at first I assumed it was a place people went to get jobs, I was wrong - it is a place you buy things, for cheap-ish, some stuff. The idea of OSJL((oss-jull)(Ocean State Job Lot)) is that you walk in, buy things at discount prices, and then leave. All the while buying so many discounted items that you end up spending upwards of tens of thousands of dollars every time you go. Plus they have some higher dollar items too... I'm not sure if that is the exact business model and I'm probably way off but I don't care because I just got three bamboo citronella candle poles for $10, so I bought 60 of them and a thing seltzer water, it was great! This particular location seemed a little messy, and the checkout time was a bit slow, and their doesn't seem to be any direction of where things are actually located, unless I missed that? This is great place to go if you need things for a party, or just don't want to spend a lot items such as plastic cutlery, or soda. read more

This Rhode-Island based discount chain is found only in New England and Upstate New York. Like Big Lots or Christmas Tree Shops, they specialize in manufacturers' closeout and overstock merchandise. They sell cheap stuff, and LOTS of it. You name it, they have it. I primarily come here for Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods. Because it's a lot more affordable than at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. Beans, seeds, nuts, spices and herbs - Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods is awesome. Other than that, I don't buy much from Ocean State. From time to time, they'll have random organic stuff that I'll try. But it's mostly dried foods or snacks. You can literally find anything for the house here. Like many things, you get what you pay for. With enough sifting and searching, there are a few gems in the endless sea of plastics and "Made in China" stickers. Staff is friendly, check-out is speedy, and parking is never an issue. This particular location is usually well organized and nicely maintained. read more

I really like "lot" stores, such as Big Lots and Ocean State Job Lot. Both have their merits, but Ocean State holds a slight edge for me because of their frequent sales, more creative selection of goods, store coupon offerings, and acceptance of manufacturer's coupons. Speaking of manufacturer's coupons, if you've read my review of Ocean State Job Lot in Willimantic (http://www.yelp.com/biz/ocean-state-job-lot-willimantic?osq=ocean+state+job+lot), you might recall the horror stories I faced while trying to redeem manufacturer's coupons, namely having my coupon rejected because of a small print detail, because the coupon wasn't printed in color, or even because the checkout clerk's interpretation of the coupon differed from mine. Icky customer service, if you ask me. Well, by Ocean State Job Lot policy, stores must abide 100% by the terms and conditions on the coupon, so you won't get away with the clerks not reading the coupons at this location. But what makes this location different is the store's willingness to help you use as many of the coupons that you brought, if at all possible. No longer do I have to worry about a clerk desperately searching for a reason to not accept the coupon I have in-hand; instead, I usually hear, "We can use this coupon, but we'll have to checkout under a separate transaction" or, at worst, "You can't use this coupon now, but come back tomorrow or in a couple of days, and you can use it then." Even apart from their understanding of a customer's desire to save money using coupons, this store's employees are just nice people overall, who always seem to be willing to help, despite the fact that their checkout lines seem to be mobbed non-stop. If it wasn't for this store, I never would have known that Ocean State Job Lot provides non-expiring rain checks on all store coupon items. I also never would have known that I could show store coupons on my smartphone if I happened to forget the ones I printed out at home. Of all the Ocean State Job Lot locations I have visited, this is my hands-down favorite. read more

Ocean State Job Lot is one of my favorite discount chains, and I'm pretty much a weekly customer here. This particular OSJL location is well kept compared to some that I've been in -- tidy, reasonably well-stocked at all times of the week, nice employees. And I mean, REALLY nice employees. I see several of the cashiers there on a regular basis, and they're always ready to strike up a conversation. OSJL is my go-to for cleaning supplies, bed & bath linens, holiday decorations, baking supplies, dried fruits, almond and soy milk... You name it, I've probably bought it here before. (Fresh lemons! Leggings! Outdoor equipment! Yarn!) In fact, part of the fun is seeing what new stuff they have from one week to the next. Some items, like Bob's Red Mill products and Polar beverages, are pretty much guaranteed to be stocked. Other things are extremely limited, so you really gotta grab 'em when you see 'em (or forever hold your peace -- R.I.P. Hello Kitty sparkling cider). I was going to give it four stars to try and hide my fanaticism, but who am I kidding? Five stars. All the way. read more

Ocean State Job Lot is one of those mysterious stores that only those living in their eighth decade would frequent. That was my impression until I finally step foot into one. Many of the items here are not of great quality. To me it was the equivalent of a Trader Joe's. Cluttered, unorganized and full of wacky off brand items. Tagged along with a friend who was a Job Lot enthusiast, she claims she only comes here for the discontinued potato chip flavors. Their "gourmet" food isle was pretty impressive but the moth ball scented store held me back from loading my cart. I love a bargain but I'm very picky with the things I put in my body. For some reason I didn't trust the expiration date on those jars of pickled items. Their collection pickled goods were impressive. I left the store with a soap dispensing brush which fell apart 3 days later. My verdict, will I be returning? Maybe for loot bag gifts for kiddy parties. Maybe for some craft items that I can take apart and use it's parts but I wouldn't furnish my home with items purchased here. If I was a student living in a dorm and didn't care about the quality of the furniture I got this would be the perfect place because many of the things here won't last longer than a year. Buy only if you're willing to see your purchase broken within 6 months. read more

I came today on a mission for deck chair cushions and a plastic kiddie pool for my dogs. Mission accomplished! This Job Lot always has a great deal of items at fair prices. I had expected that a staff person may have offered to help me since I was pushing a cart with 6 cushions and a kiddie pool and I could barely see over the top! That didn't happen, however I managed. This is the place for "economical" pool supplies. Bags of powered chlorine are $2 and sometimes cheaper when on sale. Inflatables for the pool are cheaper here also. As stated by other reviews. They buy lots of close outs and pass the savings to the customer. A lot of no-name brands, but kettle cooked chips are $2! Almost half price! Good times. read more

Hate to admit it, but I'm a Job Lot kind of shopper. I love a good deal and after having looked at the area rugs at Bed Bath and Beyond for $100 and $200, I had no trouble plunking down $60 for one of better quality from a better selection here. There are a few things that I return to this store again and again for: One is the Portuguese Sweet Bread. It tastes just like the loaves that a boyfriend I had in High School's Mom used to make. His family was 1st generation Azorean and that woman could COOK! Jigsaw Puzzles (which I enjoy) are inexpensive as are fleece PJ's, real wool socks, winter jackets, garden supplies, holiday decor, specialty biscuits and candies, cereal, olive oil, fancy jams/jellies and toiletries. If you need to fill a basket for a fund raiser, you'd do well to make your choices here. Even the baskets are nice and not pricey! The store is well organized considering the sheer amount of merchandise on hand. To say that the salespeople are helpful is an understatement. When I bought my rug, of COURSE the one I wanted was on the very bottom! A strong young man made it clear that it was absolutely NO problem to help me out and seemed genuinely happy to do so. Yeah, I'm a regular and guess what? I have a lot more cash in my pocket because of it and some very enjoyable and great quality items to boot. I'd never heard of Ocean State before moving to CT and only stopped in for the first time less than a year ago. It's definitely a bargain bin store with a mish mash of any kind of junk you can imagine. I mostly only go in to check out their discount snack and foods section. You can find some pretty great deals on items you can only get at places like Whole Foods for twice the price. But, it's hit or miss and something you found one day might not be there the next. The gardening and yard maintenance stuff boasts a pretty decent selection over the Spring/Summer seasons. I wouldn't go here looking for clothes or any home furnishings as it's all super cheap stuff that probably sat in K-mart for 3 years before coming to OSJL and definitely isn't anything that would last very long. But I guess for the price, you can't complain. read more

I have always loved ocean state, but we have had trouble with returns. We just tried to return a defective air conditioner with a receipt and were told we had to ship it to the manufacturer (For which we have to pay). I called the corporate customer service and received no help. I asked for a manager or office address to write to and was told that anything I wrote would come to their department, and they did not give out management info. For a business that grosses 675 million dollars a year I think they could afford to give us our 130 dollars back. Marc Perlman their CEO should be ashamed of fleecing the little guy. read more

I generally love this store. But today I tried to return a 130.00 air conditioner with receipt and partial box within 30 days and they told me you can't return air conditioners even if they don't work. They only do exchanges with full box and receipt, but why would I want another defective product. Please think twice when getting products here, especially high tickets items. I'm so disappointed in the lack of customer service received in store and through their website!!! read more

For a place for has a lot of things, this place has a whole lot of nothing. I went in looking for a card and gift for father's day. The card selection was slim and it seemed there was only clothes, home decor, and food. The clothes were all plain with no pattern or design. Maybe I expected too much for a place with prices they have. The staff weren't in good moods and weren't helpful. The quality of products here isn't there. The Project Management Triangle goes cost, time, and quality. You can never have all three. Here there is low cost and quick time on making the product, but the quality is lacking. read more

So my wife and I go to this place at least once a month to stock on on hard to find food items. The store sells a variety of items from garden hoses, to clothes, to ethnic foods. The prices are really good at this store, and you find things here that sometimes you never see at other shops. I will comment on the food section, since that is the section which my wife and I tend to frequent. Ocean State Job Lot offers a wide assortment of international and unique foods. I have seen the same items sold at William Sonoma for much more. Especially if you are a fan of food imported from Italy, Ocean State Job Lot always seems to have good selection of Italian products at low prices. Furthermore, a large selection of fancy cookies be be found here. An interesting side note, this Ocean State Job Lot always seems to sell fresh Portuguese Sweet bread and rolls. read more

It is a good place to hunt for bargains and to pick up some interesting food things that you might not ordinarily try. Some of the clothing (markdown name brands) but don't come here expecting to get more for your money. I have found better deals on the same items at my local hardware store or even Walmart. I go here in a pinch as there is no department store nearby but "quality" is not what you will find here. read more
