Solid spot we happened across 2 yrs ago. Went back this week and still excellent. Went twice in 4 days to be exact. My family & I (party of 5) went on Friday night (10/19) around 6:00 pm to have dinner at this restaurant (we have been there several times & have enjoyed it tremendously). We were told by a lovely young Spanish hostess/waitress that our wait time would be approximately 20 minutes. She took my name "twice", we ordered 5 drinks, and went outside on the deck to wait. After 45 minutes, we ordered another round of drinks. I observed the lovely hostess opening the front door to let people know that their tables were ready, and after about a little over an hour, went back inside to inquire as to when our table would be ready. She asked my name, checked the book, and said my name was NOT there......she apologized and I noticed a table that was just cleaned off and requested it. She said she needed to get the manager (a short Spanish man - I'm sorry, but I did not even think to ask for names), who then told me he couldn't give us the table that was available. He said our name was not on the list, and could we wait another 30-40 minutes......He also asked me if we could take the matter outside, which I/we refused to do. Another waitress then came over & apologized about what happened, but I was flabbergasted that they did not offer us the table that was then available. Another customer who was sitting down also got involved (we were extremely shocked at that, but it has nothing to do with the establishment). Needless to say, we were very upset. I'm writing this to vent my frustration regarding the incident, but more importantly to alert everyone to make sure they give their names when they arrive. I can honestly say that whenever we are back down south, we will NEVER be back at this restaurant, nor will we EVER recommend it to anyone. We were a party of 8 and decided to go to this restaurant for dinner at around 6:20pm.. We were told that the big table was inside and that a party of 7 had made a reservation before us at 6:10 and that we would have a 45min wait. We asked if it was easier to split us up into 2 tables since we were each a family of 4 and could sit outside. We were told it wouldn't have made a difference that the wait time was the same so we decided to wait. An hour later we went up to the hostess and asked about our table and she said it would be another 30 min or better. There were 2 empty tables and we asked if we could be seated there. They said they were holding it for the party that made the reservation before us but that party wasnt even there! The waitress was rude and kept saying have a good day over and over. We were basically thrown out by a waitress who we tipped $40 on a food bill that was $100 2 days before. We had no choice but to go elsewhere. Very rude and unorganized staff. Found Oceana's Bistro on Yelp and are happy we tried it. I enjoyed the best Bloody Mary I have ever had and that was Sunday's drink special! We had never heard of a dish they call the Griller, and after our server described it (a tortilla sprinkled with cheese, baked until the cheese edges are crisp, then topped and baked more) I had the veg and my partner the tuna. Fantastic and unique! Waitstaff are knowledgeable, efficient, and have great table side charm. read more

Stopped by for breakfast this morning. My boyfriend and I both got the eye opener. I got a biscuit he got toast we both had over easy eggs and bacon with homefries, it would be hard to mess breakfast up, very good, reasonable price!!! Others are leaving reviews saying the decor is outdated, not sure when they went but we are a young couple and we dug the decor, funky music playing, very friendly wait staff. We went out of season, end of March/early April so we were in no rush to get food and there were very few people around in general. $20 for 2 coffees and 2 reasonably sized breakfasts, I would recommend this for everyone read more

Quick tip: Go early because it gets crowded and cramped very quickly (small restaurant). Really good food. I got the blackened Mahi Mahi. Good, fresh piece of fish; however, it was not truly "blackened." It's not enough to just throw blackening seasonings on the fish; you have to actually cook it blackened too. But it's not a big deal. It was still delicious. Got Key Lime pie for dessert, and it was delicious, too. Presentation was really nice on it. The only negatives are that the waitress was a little cold and the (I'm assuming) manager hovered too much. I felt like I had to guard my plate towards the end so he wouldn't snatch it away. He also seemed a little bossy and rude, even to the customers. It was also a little confusing when you first walk in because they don't really have a waiting area or a sign that says if you're supposed to wait or seat yourself. When you walk in, you're right next to a table. We ended up just waiting to be seated, but the manager guy (or whoever he was) seemed a little miffed when we didn't want to sit right next to the door and asked for a seat in the back by the window instead. Overall, good food, nice atmosphere. It's a little small, so go early for meals (not at the peak meal times like noon or 7pm) if you don't want to sit outside for a long time. Delicious for breakfast! We visited Cape Hatteras for a quick weekend trip in January and Oceana's was one of the few places open in the off-season. We ended up here for a late Sunday morning brunch and were happy to see they were still serving breakfast at 11am. I had the biscuits and gravy and my girlfriend had a platter with eggs, sausage, toast, and home fries. We were both happy with our meals and would definitely come back! Funny thing, police pulled me over for passing on the right, Big no no in N.C., I told officer my kids are starving and I was in a rush, saw I was a veteran, got off w a warning and recommended this bistro to me vs Frog Dog's a mile further. Went in and my boys are picky eaters, the chowder was very good BUT the crab soup was packed w. crab meat like I've never seen before. Love it! They had a great fresh mint mojito on special but only had enough mint left for one :( old bay chips were decent ranch that came with it was great! I ordered the crab Mac and cheese and it was amazing. I have been waiting for some time to get good crab Mac and I found it! Bartender was nice and the bar atmosphere was great. It seemed like a nice place to go but as soon as we walked in the door, the waitress seemed annoyed but she sat our table. It wasn't busy when we got there but a couple tables came in after us and they all seemed to react the same when a table walked in. I'm a waitress, I get it you're not always happy to be at work but put some pep in your step girlfriend. I ordered the steak entree. I asked for it to be medium with broccoli and mac and cheese on the side. I got the steak and it looked good but was over cooked. My mac and cheese was cold I did ask her to put it in the microwave and it came back hot. It's all about the service and making customers happy and you could hear the servers complaining out loud "I'm not staying here till 5" like come on keep it a little professional. read more

A comment made to the table behind us was "it does no good to complain because the cooks will slow down more"...never something you want to hear while waiting for food. Great breakfast spot. Our group has gone several times so we have tried a variety of items over the week in Avon. The Breakfast quesadilla is wonderful. Biscuits and english muffin sandwiches were good. Grits were good as were the pancakes and sausage gravy. Bacon was nice and crisp. The french toast was ok. Of course coffee is vital for a good breakfast and it was good. However the latte was lacking. Can be noisy depending on the time of day. They do often have big groups at nice big tables so that can get loud. We will go again. read more

My wife ordered fish and chips and said the batter had no taste and was just flour and water. We waited a long time for our salad and soup which we asked for first. I had to finally ask the other server to ask our server to please bring it out. When She did she said to me we cook everything fresh when it's ordered here. Soup and salad? After reading other reviews, I'd have to guess that their menu is just really spotty. This place truly is nothing more than a bar that serves food, so keep that in mind when you read the rest of this review. Having had several days straight of seafood, I tried their smothered chicken. I have never before paid $16 for one incredibly TOUGH piece of poultry, a first for me. In fact, I am still trying to figure out how they got it to be that tough. To add insult, the featured mushrooms and cheese were as bland as you get., accompanied by 3 sticks of 'grilled' potatoes and mediocre cole slaw - my choices for side dishes. They had a flounder special the night we stopped in, we all agreed that it was possibly the fishiest smelling/tasting flounder we'd ever encountered - another first for us. Their steaks were just OK, although one of our teenagers thought it was good. Before leaving, I had a piece of their touted coconut cake dessert (very good!), then went and got a couple of tacos a few doors down. Breakfast? OK, but why go here when you have the Diamond Shoals Restaurant in Buxton and the Froggy Dog just up the road. read more

Now lets talk service or rather lets not. Only two servers for the 10 tables. Yes I said 10 tables. This place is small so during the season you have to eat early or late.
