The staff did not seem to adequately monitor residents or enforce rules designed to keep people safe and sober. A rehabilitation facility should provide structure, support, and accountability. Instead, I witnessed what appeared to be negligence and a failure to properly supervise residents. This environment did not feel safe or conducive to recovery, and it raised serious concerns about the well-being of those seeking treatment. If individuals are able to engage in substance use, sexual activity, or other high-risk behaviors without intervention, then the facility is failing to provide the level of care and oversight that families and residents expect. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this facility to anyone seeking a serious recovery program.

I've struggled with substance use disorder / alcoholism for much of my teen and adult life and have pursued sobriety over the past three years, primarily through AA back home in Boston. I relapsed in May after a 9-month run of sobriety... during the 7 months from May through December, things got worse, not better, and I felt like I couldn't figure out how to get back on track on my own. I've long resisted the suggestion to attend inpatient rehab, primarily out of fear from completely disconnecting from my professional life (I run a professional services firm and feel I need to be reachable for emergencies, etc.). Once I found out there were rehabs that allowed phone access (which I hadn't considered), I decided to get over myself and pull the trigger by the time I turned 40, which I did during my first full day at Capo. Life at Capo: Peers (the other clients): Feel like I hit the jackpot here. I've been surrounded by other sharp, successful individuals who struggle in similar ways. Lots of diverse life experiences, incredibly kind and interesting people, universally supportive and serious in their pursuit of recovery. -- 10/10 Staff (therapists, technicians, support staff): Another jackpot. The program is supported by a large staff, most of whom have been with Capo for a long stretch. They work cohesively, skillfully, and have our best interests at heart. I couldn't be more thankful for the environment they've created. I've never eaten better, and I feel like I'm walking away with tools and insights that will help me sustain my recovery post-Capo. There's a good mix of group therapy, individual therapy, and alternative modalities (breath work, yoga, massage, etc.). Like with the clients: diverse life experience, incredibly kind and interesting people, universally skillfully and supportive in what how they approach their work. -- 10/10 Other Stuff: I've enjoyed being exposed to what I would call "the greater Capo community." I've enjoyed the outside AA meetings in the evening, attending Capo Church on Sunday mornings (always followed by a group brunch at The Brig in Dana Point Harbor), and taking walks around our neighborhood and down to Capistrano Beach. I haven't attended church much as an adult (raised Catholic), but I've found the Capo Church (which is not directly associated with Capo By The Sea) to be a cool place with great music. Attendance is optional, but it's been a great overall Sunday morning routine for me. -- 10/10 Other Other Stuff: John, the founder of Capo By The Sea, seems like an incredibly compassionate guy. He's certainly built what I would consider to be a heck of an operation. We get to know him directly as he runs our 7:30am gratitude meeting each day, and he also treats folks to brunch on Sunday mornings after church (if you decide to go). I think the culture and staff of any business tend to be a reflection of leadership, and I couldn't be more impressed or thankful for what John has built. I consider it a real blessing that I found my way to Capo By The Sea. -- 10/10 The Weather: I thought it was supposed to be sunny in Southern California? We've actually had a few days of rain during my stay. It would be cooler if the weather were 70 and sunny every day, not just most days. Sure beats Boston winters tho! My experience has been transformational, and I am very grateful for LTC. Gilbert and Maria are some of the most inspirational leaders I've ever met, and are clearly extremely devoted and passionate about the work that they do. The entire staff is very caring and friendly, and I've found many new friends in the patients A specific highlight of my treatment was the field trip to a Native American sweat lodge, led by Gilbert. It was magical, being both detoxifying and spiritual - I am definitely going to continue attending when I'm an alumni! A low light was the amount of time it takes to get medication in the morning and evening. It would consistently take anywhere from 10-30 min just to get meds - they definitely need to figure out a more efficient process. Overall, this place is awesome!

Not the Casa Grande House the other residential house…read more My experience with First Light Recovery was mixed. There were some positives, but also several things that left me feeling disappointed. The admissions coordinator was untruthful in her description of the program. After I arrived I was left to wondered if she had actually ever been to the residence. The clinical manager stopped by once while meeting with a new staff member. She stood at the door of my room and never once said hello to me or any of the other clients. She was rude. Whoever handles the insurance and billing dropped the ball for me. My insurance company sent a form to be signed and it went unnoticed for over a week so the remainder of my stay was canceled. The therapist was caring and professional, and I did find some of the sessions helpful. I appreciated the opportunity to open up and gain some insight. That said, the support felt inconsistent at times, and I didn't always feel that my needs were fully addressed. She is the only therapist for all the clients so promises were continually unmet. Scheduling a family meeting was one area she dropped the ball and promises to meet with me were often forgotten. The house manager kept things structured, but at times the approach came across as more rigid than supportive. While I understand the importance of rules and accountability, I often felt more managed than cared for. She is new to this position and hasn't gotten the hang of it yet causing overall confusion at the residence. As for the staff overall, some were kind and genuinely tried to help, while others felt detached or not fully present. Ryan, Melissa, Savannah, Josh and Christian were fun, organized, and consistently went above and beyond for all clients. They used humor and compassion with all clients. I never felt alone or isolated when they worked. I hope they all go on to bigger and better things because their skills are what made a difference in my life. I wish them all a wonderful life of joy and happiness. As far as the many other staff there were moments when I felt supported, but also times when I felt overlooked. The house is not ADA compliant with several glaring code violations. They just need to put some money into the beautiful but run down residence. If you have a physical disability this is not the place for you. Overall, I think First Light Recovery has potential and does offer some good resources, but for me, the experience fell short of what I had hoped for.

I needed a miracle to change my life and the direction it was heading in and God put this facility with its staff there to do just that! Intake: Ken is the one that worked with my family to really get the ball rolling and my beautiful journey started. He was nothing but kind and caring when I showed up for admission oh so broken. He made my intake experience that should have been miserable actually bearable and even a little fun which really brought a glimmer of hope to the beginning of the path. Drivers: Shoutout to the entire driver team. Riley is the one who picked me up and drove me in to in patient and gave me some really powerful words of encouragement. Joel always had me and the rest of the guys laughing and really lightened up my experience there while providing some really good wisdom as well. Darren and Sniper Jim were great drivers who conducted themselves very professional and executed any all tasks flawlessly while also bringing some laughs along the way. House Management: Man these guys were all so wonderful and such blessings to have for the day to day stuff. I want to shoutout Aaron, Andrew, Justin and Colby. Every single one of these dudes were there for me at various parts along the way and each one of them went above and beyond to help me out. These are exactly the dudes you want handling the houses when you're going through treatment! Case Managers: The entire case management team was unreal. Mike, Jeremiah and of course my case manager Matt. Mike was such a sweet and caring dude but very deep. His groups really brought some great introspective thinking. Very bright dude who is great to pull aside and run things by. Jeremiah was the man since day 0!! This dude actually took the time to give me a tour of the facility two months before I ultimately came in. He was super kind and genuine but could really bring the heat when we needed it. This is a man passionate about what he does and is in it to genuinely help turn guys lives around. Which he had a big part in doing just that for me! Matt... You're one heck of a case manager man. There were some pivotal points of my recovery where I wanted to just be done and leave but you managed to steer me in the right direction and really stand in my corner. You were nothing but phenomenal from the beginning. You were constantly proactive. Anytime I needed something you were likely already on it and if not you addressed it and got it handled immediately. From start to finish you set me up for success and I can't thank you enough for that! Pastoral Staff: Tom, Eric and Bob I love you guys and am so grateful for the ways in which you have all guided me spiritually. Each one of you are such brilliant, inspirational and strong men. God is surely looking down upon you three and so proud of the work you do in changing so many men's lives for good. Pastor Tom - There simply aren't words to describe the impact that this man has had on my life. He was there for me constantly through the highs and lows. Also while hiding it from a Pastor at my church. I put my wife through hell for over 8 years. My faith felt on the verge of cracking, and I was being fake. But then I got a Scholarship here! In the beginning I was prejudice with AA. However, after some time, I became open to it, with the help of others with the hang ups I had. Mr Ed gives a really good educational rundown with solid solutions. Family is Welcomed! The Doctors there are all very helpful. The lie is dead, We Do Recover! Many of those there in Ministry have been Set Free! Grandpa Pastor Tom is loving, with an ear to listen and no judgement. Case worker, Jeremiah Kee is a straight shooter and will not steer you wrong. One of the Best around. Pastor Bob is like a Theologian, concerning and helpful. Pastor Eric is a go getter, and will keep you laughing. On Sundays, we go to church. It is intimate with no emotional manipulation. Pastor Winston there is solid. Being there, I have made many friends and I will have them for the rest of my life! They All care for you! Staff member Joel is serious about AA, along with Jim aka Sniper. They have a phenomenal Therapist named Jeremiah that is one of the best and very trustworthy. Rachel at the front, keeps the place together and encourages like no other. Matthew sets the bar as an incredible case manager and facilitator. When speaking with him I felt seen and understood during a challenging time. And I've seen how the groups he leads with transformative practices has made powerful waves in how my peers and I tackle our challenges. Lena is a wonderful CM who embraced me as I am and helped me see a whole new world of possibility, at my own pace, as well as offering deep insights when facilitating our groups. And Dr.Turner has been a wise wizard offering support with tailored medication, speaking to me as an individual, and offering timely guidance. There's a list of more wonderful people here, like Ashly and her sound meditations, and Sapna with her artful activities for making breakthroughs. Jamie also sets a safe space that helps groups open up and process. The environment is welcoming too, which makes the experience less daunting, as well as the intake process with Aljan. The insurance and paperwork process is handled efficiently too. The care and wisdom shared within this facility has greatly influenced my sense of safety and helped me better my life. There's the family we start with, and the family we make along the way, and I will be forever grateful for all the people I've met here. All that to say, I definitely recommend them. They didn't just offer reassurance or pamphlets -- they gave me real, practical tools for how to show up better for my family member during an incredibly difficult time. I came in feeling reactive and overwhelmed, and I left with what I can only describe as a blueprint: a way of understanding what was happening and how to navigate it with more clarity and less fear. If you have a loved one in treatment and you're wondering whether to engage with the family programming -- do it. It made a meaningful difference in how I was able to support someone I love. Now if your dealing with ppl fresh in recovery once in a while you might be having a bad day and may just take flight on you Mike! So you may want to watch how you talk to ppl. AND MAYBE JIST MAYBE try to act like a professional!!
