Update: I got a statement from my dental insurance. The amount I was billed was higher than what they submitted to the Insurance. The numbers don't match up. Where the heck did the additional charges come from? ----------------- Dr. Ybarra and Dr. Yuen are amazing dentist. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about them. They were a pleasure to work with and I wish i could continue going to this location. However, the billing department is a bit outrageous. $18 ,580 for one implant, some bone graphs, and switching a bridge to caps. This was my price out of pocket after insurance covered what it could. I know i was overcharged because i called other offices in the exact same dental network and collected their estimates. A different office explained it this way: There are set prices which they must charge for insurance legality reasons. But if it's not covered, the office has some leeway and can offer incentives like 20% off for new customer, seasonal sales, etc. to make the package more attractive. When I called OMD to ask why I was charged so much the office managers response was "our doctors are specialist, and they use specialized materials ". That excuse doesn't fly when the other offices in the same network have doctors whom are just as qualified and use the same equipment/resources/materials. read more

I can't believe I have to write a bad review for a dental office. Let me start by saying, fantastic location. Nice dentist (Ybarra). The good stops there, sadly. The wait when you arrive will be 20 plus minutes. They will recommend gobs of dental work for you to get done. Stop. Get a second opinion. They will send in a variety of people to clean you, check you, and then someone else to draw up your bill. You will be there for about 2 hours. Had to ask for my "free toothbrush" on the way out. I'm looking forward to a new dental office in the new year. I do not recommend. read more

I'm not sure how you call yourself a "modern" dentistry when you don't have the proper software to send your clients their medical records and instead require them to take time off their job to come to your office with a flashdrive so you can wait there while they put your imaging records on there. A friend of mine also had them redo a crown on her and it's about 5 shades off and they refused to fix it for her claiming it matched perfectly. Oh and the reason I'm trying to get my records is because they quoted me thousands of dollars telling me I needed to have a tooth pulled and an implant put in, well another dentist said that was not true, saved the tooth and it cost me a small fraction of what this place quoted me. Not going to get into details, but I'll say the people here are nice, however the service you receive is bad, with multiple follow-ups needed to correct issues and I had more than a handful of problems in my time coming here with billing issues, waiting in the lobby for half an hour to be seen, getting contradicting diagnoses and advice, and having many procedures pushed on me, that after getting second opinions I was told were completely unnecessary, which made sense when I found out that they are a corporate office and are required to have a certain amount procedures done a month, which is why sometimes they are pushed on you unnecessarily. Also the prices are inflated so get 2nd opinions, Be vigilant. read more

My experience as a first time patient was not so great. They advised me that I needed a deep cleaning. I regularly go to the dentist and have for years. I take care of my oral health. I have never been told I needed a deep cleaning. My husband who had an appointment the same week was also told he needed a deep cleaning. Naturally I was cautious especially after reading others reviews. The deep cleaning was not covered by my insurance and I was quoted $500. I declined that treatment and I was denied my regular cleaning. This is what I did not appreciate. I missed out of my yearly cleaning. I initially came here for a cleaning which went well. Afterward, I was told I needed a few fillings and the front desk quoted me $700+, saying my insurance didn't cover composite fillings. I trusted that information and scheduled the appointment a few weeks later so I could save the money. (Yes I should've checked my own insurance but also I should be able to trust my dental provider for correct information.) When I came back for the filling, a different front desk employee told me there was actually no cost and my insurance did cover it, meaning I unnecessarily delayed treatment and had to take additional time off work. After the filling, I began experiencing severe throbbing pain in the tooth. Eating or drinking anything causes intense pain for 3 months. I returned to the office where they took an X-ray and applied a topical treatment, but Dr. Ybarra said she "didn't think" a nerve had been hit and gave no clear explanation or advice for managing the pain. "Didn't think," how are you unsure, is that not your profession to be sure?...I was told someone would follow up with the X-ray results, but no one ever called back. A month later I was still in extreme pain and called again, I was told I'd get an immediate call back to schedule an appointment, but again no follow-up. I eventually had to go to another dentist due to the pain, who confirmed that a nerve had indeed been hit during the procedure. I've never written a negative review before, but between being misquoted $700+, lack of communication, and no follow-up while I was in pain, this was a very disappointing experience. I will not be returning and would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

First of all, the front desk lady is rude, has no warmth to her personality whatsoever. She should not be the person that greets clients. Second, I noticed I was always being brought back in late for my appointment, even when I was the first one scheduled for the day. I mentioned this in my last appointment I had last week to the dentist so I could understand why that was, and she said pretty much "it is what it is. you don't question a doctor's office for being late, you don't question a dentist's office either. if you don't like it, find someone else" I said okay & then asked more questions about my dental work/cost. I go to make my next dentist appointment & last night I receive an email stating they will no longer have me as a client! I ask a question about it, and they immediately told me I'm not allowed back. I had a wonderful experience here! I'm the absolute worst when it comes to making sure I get a cleaning every 6 months and I was well overdue. I initially had my appointment with Dr. Ybarra but ended up seeing Dr. Sugo due to a scheduling conflict. Normally, I'd pass since I prefer to research my care beforehand. Nonetheless, I was so satisfied with Dr. Sugo and the dental hygienist taking my x-rays. Both of them ensured I was informed with each step they took and made sure I felt comfortable throughout the process. I'm excited to come back in 6 months which is something I've never said about the dentist. On another note, the office is comfortable with plenty of seating. I was asked to leave a review of my experience. As I don't leave many reviews, I'm amazed how many ignorant people just say the stupid stuff and try to hurt a business and a Dr who is trying to make a living and also taking care of people who are in pain and need work. I was one of these people in excruciating pain and was able to be seen the same day I called. They were able to verify my insurance and yes I still had to pay out of pocket but they were able to work with me and get me a crown and root canal completed fast. Dr. Ybarra is so gentle, kind and quick. I've been to dentist where I was there for over 3 to 4 hours for one crown. I was able to get out of pain and a crown in under an hour. She has found a patient for life and I will be bringing my whole family here. The girls in the front and the one that took my X-rays were so kind and caring. read more

Updated review! Less than a star! Called to request at a refund and was told I needed to come in and have an exam and an xray for a refund! So I need to be subjected to additional radiation to have a refund on a visibly broken crown! Because looking at it is just not enough!! On Friday 8/30 I received a call from the office manager requesting xrays again. Office manager Janiece outright accused me of leaving neagtive reviews to get money stating all my reviews are negative and its impossible for a zarconia crown to crack so I must just be looking for money! I am extremely disappointed with this office. I arrived early for my AM appointment and wasn't brought back until about 30 minutes later . All they did was take one photo, then left me waiting another 35 minutes without anyone seeing me. I have a job and other obligations, I don't have time to sit around for over an hour past my scheduled time. In the end, I had to leave just to clock in for work, and now I have to reschedule. This was a complete waste of my morning. If an office can't respect their patients' time, it shows a serious lack of professionalism and care. read more

I'm writing this to share the #1 thing I wish I knew before walking into this place. I could've done my research in advance and figured it out, but I didn't. This is a corporate owned and run practice. I went in for a cleaning and exam & almost walked out with two healthy teeth filed down for a dental bridge, that now two other dentists (after the fact) advised against. I just got my quote for an implant from an established surgeon, and all in all it's going to cost thousands less than what I was quoted for the bridge that doesn't have the same lifespan. I was also advised that I needed a deep cleaning, that I started that day, on half my mouth. After an exam at a private dental practice, they advised that the other half of my mouth didn't need deep cleaning. If anything, I'm mad at myself because I really should know better. I have a graduate degree in the medical field, and I still want to believe someone in scrubs when they're telling me that I need a fancy cleaning with laser treatment (optional) that cost me hundreds of dollars. (That's right!). I'm considering myself lucky that I didn't spend 1000s they wanted. I should add that everyone I dealt with there was very kind, which made what they were telling me more believable. It should have been a red flag that the door was still locked at the time of my appointment when the reminder text that I got said to be there early. Rounded up from 2.5 stars cause I'm feeling generous. read more

Wow! Where do I start! My husband and I were new patients and I was hopeful we had found our new family dentist, but the way the staff treats its patients is unacceptable. First, I wasn't too impressed or excited that they offered to give me a fake appointment so they could bill by insurance on two separate days to get the deep cleaning they insisted I needed (even though I just had a cleaning with my old dentist 6 months ago). I went along with it because it would save me a trip but looking back it was a red flag. Next came my husband's appointment for the same deep cleaning (hmm). Well this went way worse. He got there early and the person at the front desk told him they cancelled his appointment because he didn't return her call the day before. After he restated that he's had this appointment scheduled for weeks, she said she would see what she could do. It's obvious they didn't want to see anyone at 4pm! They agreed to see him at his scheduled appointment time and requested payment before service. Fine. He gave them his FSA card to run which has funds and has been activated but she couldn't get it to work. My husband called the 800 number on the card right there to confirm there were funds and the card was active. So she takes him back to the room and the dentist starts treatment. While he's in the chair being numbed, the front desk person returns with the card reader in hand. WHOLE HE IS BEING TREATED BY THE DENTIST! So outrageously unprofessional! She asks if he's ready to run the card again, she runs it and it still doesn't work. So she proceeds to tell him he can't get treatment if the card doesn't work, while he's in the chair numb. At this point would you want to sit in a dentist chair for an hour after being treated so discourteously? No! Me either, so he left. Maybe she should have call the card herself or not taken him back until the card issue was resolved. There are so many potential solutions other than being unprofessional and rude. Maybe this place doesn't understand that being at the dentist is already stressful and difficult for most and being helpful & professional is something patients need. Lastly, I called to speak to the office manager (days later) to discuss our recent interaction & was told by another rude front desk staff member that she was too busy to call me back but might have time Monday to call me. WOW! They definitely don't make their patient's experience a priority. Don't waste your time with rude unprofessional staff at this office. There are dentist on every corner and most are willing to offer patients a much more pleasant and courteous interaction. We will be going elsewhere. Since they are too busy to call patients back the same day they are probably too busy to care that they lost two new patients but I thought I'd share my experience to save someone whose thinking they found their new family dentist some time. They are much nicer dentist in town so don't bother with this rude staff! read more

I am autistic and also have verrry sensitive teeth, so going to the dentist is a challenge. My partner and I disclosed these things to the staff here and they were very kind and accommodating with my needs in order to make sure it was a good experience. I often feel like an "annoyance" in medical settings, but the staff here did not make me feel that way. They explained everything they were doing, and were very gracious in answering all the questions I had and helping me get through having two cavities filled. I also have receding gums and Dr Ybarra explained prevention of further gum recession in more detail than my previous dentist did! I just went in for my first appointment, I booked X-rays and a cleaning, and was really disappointed. To start, a day in advance of the appointment I responded to their checkin email and asked if I could possibly show up 10 mins late. No one ever responded to me, so the next day I dip out of my work meeting 10 mins early to be sure I arrive on time. I proceed to wait in the waiting room for over 30 mins. Then my dentist comes in and introduces himself and apologies for the delay, and I get my x-rays with the tech. Then I wait for another 20-25 minutes. Then a different dentist (not the person I had an appointment with) comes in and goes over my x-rays with me. She said she was going to do the initial exam and then he'd do the rest. She was thorough and explained everything. I had no cavities but she did recommend a deep clean. Then my dentist breezes in, she tells him that what she recommended and they say they'll be right back to talk about a treatment plan. I wait another 10-15 minutes. My dentist never comes back in, in fact he literally never looked in my mouth or said anything other than the intro. Instead the front desk receptionist walks in and says they can do a deep cleaning now, and my co-pay after insurance will be $850. I said I needed to think about it, and that I'd like to just get my normal cleaning for now (which of course is FREE with insurance). And she said "oh they can't do a normal cleaning they'd just be smearing around the bacteria". Ok...I get that there might be pockets of bacteria deep in my gums, but the idea that a normal cleaning, WHICH IS FREE, will do nothing, is a bit absurd. So they told me to kick rocks, and I wasted 2 hours out of my workday to just get x-rays. My hunch is they were just way too understaffed to actually do my cleaning that day. read more

I went in a couple months ago with a toothache and Dr.Ybarra got me out of pain. Not only did she get me out of pain she also replaced another old metal crown that cracked my tooth and I was even aware of it. I have 2 new zirconia crowns that are stronger than ever. She and her staff also helped me out a bit as I have a crappy HMO plan and I was able to finance with no interest. I will be referring all my friends and family to Oceanside a Modern Dentistry. When he sold the practice and retired, I did not know who to go to. I searched for a new dentist based on their reviews and I was far from enthusiastic about any of them. Oceanside Modern Dentistry lives up to its name. It is clean, has all new state of the art equipment. The office staff and assistants were well friendly kind as well as very well trained and professional. The X-ray and photo system were amazing! I've never seen my teeth in that manner.
