I feel like this place has way more drink options than food options. We ended up getting here 15 mins before HH ended so we each ordered 2 mojitos at one time. God Bless Texas. I ended up getting the salmon with the risotto and the cook of the fish impressed me the most. The skin was crispy on the bottom and the meat pretty much melted in your mouth like butter. Speaking of which, I didn't enjoy the risotto as much as I thought I would. There were pieces of cold butter thrown in throughout. I guess the idea was for it to have melt but I had like three bites where it was just cold butter. Overall, I didn't feel like the menu was very Cuban. This place is so cute! And the service is phenomenal. We searched for a place to smoke our cigars and although you can only smoke on the outside patio, these folks really accommodate. We travelled down from Austin and I wasn't dressed for the cooler weather for the evening and they turned on their outdoor heaters for me when it got chilly. When they wouldn't work they went out of their way to move the heaters around and turned on two for me! They even were playing Casablanca on the side of the building. There were no sounds, but the movie gave it an old world-romantic vibe. The downstairs bar is dark and cozy, very romantic and the smell of the incense is soft and not over powering. However the dim lights carry over to their bathrooms. My only bad critique I have it needs better lighting in the bathroom. A girl has to make sure she doesn't have food stuck in between her teeth or boogies in her nose!! Ocho has vibrant decorations that truly remind me of Havana. Though it is a fairly small restaurant, I can tell they were thoughtful and resourceful about how they used their space. The details from the Ocho name engraved on the tables to colorful, complementary furniture to the cool windows were definitely highlights of the visit. My husband and I came here for drinks before dinner. We didn't make reservations and are lucky that we got a table. I would strongly recommend making reservations especially if you come here on the weekend. The drinks and service were solid, but not outstanding. Our plans were to enjoy a Day of the Dead lunch special at Ocho. Our group of 8 was welcome with plenty of seating in their beautiful outdoorsy restaurant. The restaurant itself is gorgeous! That alone is fantastic. The start of our lunch was a little rocky. Our group leader advised our waitress we were there for their Day of the Dead special menu. We were told it was not available. We were a little upset after all, this was the reason for our reservation and for this specific time. I felt some attitude from our waitress which was not necessary. Ocho is a great restaurant with many tourist and our servers represent San Antonio. I felt it could have been handled with greater hospitality. Long story short we were able to have their special menu of the day. I ordered the bacon rapped shrimp. It was $9 for three small shrimp (not even medium size) on a bed of spring lettuce. The spring lettuce was great! I tried to remove the shrimps from the skewers but the shrimp and bacon were a little overdone and they were adhered to the sticks. The bacon was very crunchy and would have been better with a little softness texture. Was it $9 worthy ? Sadly,no. I also tried their Chichen dish. The chicken was moist and the added veggies with sauce was very very tasty. I did like the dish much better then the shrimp. For dessert, we had buñuelos with coconut ice cream. This dessert was light and just right. Loved the coconut ice cream and cinnamon from the buñuelo combo. It was perfect. Overall food was good but the shrimp needs a change of preparation. The staff needs to be a little more friendly and less stand off'ish. Their attitude I felt improved once they found out we were with Yelp which shouldn't matter. The top of my places I like to go to for lunch list!!! I love the setting overlooking a beautiful and very peaceful section of the river walk. So very peaceful and relaxing. The service has always been very friendly and efficient. When one has a limited lunch hour good service is of critical importance. Each week they offer a soup of the week and a salad of the week. The first time I went the soup of the week was a chilled cream of broccoli with lump crab added. That was so good. The Fruit Mixta is sized for a meal with a nice assortment of fresh fruits. The Traditional Pork Pozole Rojo is very good. I like a good soup for lunch. The Shrimp and Crab Campachena is delicious and filling without being heavy. The Ocho Chopped Salad also makes a good filling light lunch (if you want you can add chicken or crab). They offer a nice selection of Tortas on the menu. I've tried the Havana Hippie, the Havana Cubana and the Hamburguesa and enjoyed all three. The tortes come with house made potato chips. Good food with a great view and awesome service. read more

Uno Dos Tres... OCHO This is the place to go to for an all around experience of literally having Dinner by Day and Drinks at Night. This place has a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde vibe and I absolutely love it. When you enter you have this fresh restaurant that has an amazing Cuban/Latin infusion twist to their food and drink menu. The chandelier and piano inside the restaurant gives it such a fun feel and the views of downtown are super sweet when dining inside or on their patio. Make sure to take a look around and notice the details. One of the more intricate restaurants with their decor. The patio is perfect for dining during those lovely Texan nights I must say. My favorite is the Cuban Style Burger and their desserts. You can't come to Ocho and not have dessert that would be nonsense! My personal fave is their twist on the iconic Churro with the dipping sauces they serve to compliment them. Trust me you won't find me sharing my dessert. I just can't rave enough about their dishes altogether. What's great about Ocho is the speakeasy bar located right underneath the restaurant. There isn't a major sign or anything but a small staircase to your right as you are heading towards their bathrooms (bathrooms are located outside). Take the plunge and your senses are immersed in this dark intimate setting. The vibe of the bar is so cool and once your eyes adjust to the low lit bar you'll be glad you stayed for a drink or two after your dinner. We came here at an awkward time around 4 pm and ended up being the only people in the restaurant. This restaurant is perfect for instagramming, it has the most pretty blue theme complete with chandeliers and pretty guppy fishes in an octagon shaped fishbowl. We also ordered the chorizo con queso, papas bravas, and spicy mushroom tacos. My favorite of the items we ordered were the chorizo con queso, and the spicy mushroom tacos. The papas bravas were also pretty tasty but not spicy at all. The abondigas were delightfully spicy but I think even the HH price of $5 is not worth it for 3 meatballs. The quesadilla was tasteless, I mean I didn't taste any cheese or anything, even with the guacamole on top it tasted like I was eating tortillas and guacamole. The chorizo con queso was basically crumbled chorizo with some melted cheese on top, I was envisioning a more Tex - mex style dish but it was presented in a more unique way, in which if you waited to eat it it would end up cold and not scoopable anymore. This dish had a lot of flavor compared to the other dishes. The spicy mushroom tacos are a must Oder !!! The mushrooms add such a meaty flavor to a meatless dish. Not a night club or a sleezy bar, it's romantic and roomy with three separate areas overlooking the River, outdoors or in the dark basement filled with low lighting. comfortable couches and red candles. I have to admit I'm skeptical about hotel restaurants. Most of the time they have mediocre overpriced food with lacking service. Ocho is totally not one those restaurants! We went here for dinner on a Sunday night and as expected, it was not crowded. We were greeted right away and told to pick where we wanted to sit. We opted for the outside patio since it was such nice weather. Service was attentive and friendly. But the true test came with the quality of the food and drinks. We were not disappointed in the slightest. From the drinks, appetizer, entrees, all the way to the dessert, were all delicious. Since Ocho is a Cuban restaurant we had to order mojito for drinks and sandwiches for our entrees. If you are thinking about ordering a sandwich, I would recommend the Hamburguesa. The El Cubano is good as well, but the Hamburguesa had so much more flavor. Get the papas bravas as a side instead of the fries or potato chips. You will not regret it! Went for a Sunday brunch and it was AWESOME! I ordered the Cubano Con Huevo which consisted of achiote roasted pork shoulder, griddled ham, swiss cheese & fried egg, served with home fries & pickles. It was kind of like a Cuban sandwich but breakfast style. My brunch partner had the Sweet Plantain Griddle Cakes and she let me sample them - they were just as good as they looked. It was a beautiful morning so we sat outside on the shaded patio overlooking a quiet section the river walk and enjoyed mimosas. After we finished, we meandered inside to check out the place. I mean years of waiting for the right moment and Valentine's Day rolls around and I thought of the over the top chandeliers and outside seating and overall romantic atmosphere. We head downtown, pick a spot inside and decide what better then to sit outside instead where no one else is at, sightseeing the river and no outside traffic to be seen since we got there at 4pm. The place was not even a little bit packed, yet online it seemed like it would be super booked all day for Vday. I ordered a tilapia with shrimp on quinoa and raspberry balsamic vinaigrette and my husband ordered the trout with shrimp or rice pilaf. Both were tender and enjoyed the blend of favors with the quinoa with the tilapia with a little bit of mango or sweet yellow pepper?! Delicious! Weather was cloudy but nice enough to sit outside with a view to the river. What else could we ask for? A little music maybe?, lol. It was just too quiet but maybe the patrons were keeping all the fun downstairs in the bar. Maybe that's where we should have headed to next. Maybe we'll have to check it out next time we are down town, I've heard good things about the bar....All in all we had a good experience with a tasty dinner, good service, clean all around just lacked the desired excitement I had been building up to be, not enough things on the menu to entice me, no music, the desert with ice cream was delicious. This place is super cute! I absolutely loved the natural and soothing atmosphere of the dining area. The colors of the restaurant were great picks and layout of the place was not too cramped! The food portions are enormous! We ordered a sandwich, burger and queso appetizer. I was full after the queso! Their pulled chicken sandwich was not that great. It tasted a little bland especially after eating the queso. Our waiter was quick and attentive. She made suggestions when we ordered, which is always helpful as a new customer! However, there weren't many people at the time we went so things may be different when there are a lot of people. This place is so picturesque! I love the clear garage doors that serve as one wall and although the river isn't spectacular, it still makes for an awesome view. The chairs, decorations, chandeliers all fit so well together and I felt so swanky eating here. Tostones - this one didn't quite impress. It was a little tough/hard and a little cold. Almost as if it had been sitting for a while and toughened up - not as good as the others I've had before. The aoili was great. Ocho Salsa Platter - the guacamole and the salsas were ok. Especially for the price, I would have rather tried another app for just a little more. Salmon al Sarten - I've only been impressed one time before with restaurant salmon and this time was pretty good. The salmon was not as moist as I've had but also huge plus - it wasn't dry. There was more thin portion to the salmon than thick cut which I worried would be overcooked, but to my surprise it was not. There was also I nice crisp/crunchy outer later. The risotto also had a rich flavor and was not overcooked nor undercooked. Also a plus - I do not like peas because of their texture. There were a lot of peas in this dish and I hardly even noticed them. Banana Bread French Toast - I'm not a total sweets fan so this was a little too sweet for me. All I needed was a bite or two and I was good. The ice cream was homemade and perfectly soft. The bread was moist and the sauce was good. Fresh Fried Churros - man, is it sad to say I think I've only had churros at costco? This was delicious. I was kind of curious at what it would taste like as the outside was pretty dark brown. I tore a piece off and the inside was...I don't know how to explain it...It almost looked as if it would be undercooked but when you take a bite, it was a perfect texture. They were having a private event on the patio so we went to the basement bar to have dinner (wanted to go for the patio experience) The basement bar is actually pretty cool. Had a very basement-y feel, very dark, but kind of stuffy. Seating was a challenge, it was 6 of us total and trying to push together small tables and chairs in the semi cramped space was difficult and no one that worked there was accommodating. My sister was asked to move because she was slightly in the walkway and we honestly had no where else we could move it scoot. I just thought it was inconsiderate of the workers not to help accommodate us. Our server was very nice. Helpful and attentive! Food took about 30 minutes though. Had a few cocktails and micheladas. Those came quickly. We had the Tostones, spicy mushroom tacos, and Havana papas bravas wth added egg and avocado($3 though-_- for like a quarter of avocado) The food was actually very good. The Tostones were a bit hard, but tasted good. The tacos were SPICY but very very delicious. And the papas bravas were good, home fries style, definitely needed the egg and avocado, if not I think it would've been really dry. Over all, we had an okay experience. Dealing with the seating situation was definitely the reason why I gave it 3 stars. Food was good. Will check it out again though. Hopefully the patio won't be closed. read more

While planning my trip to San Antonio, I made sure to add churros to my list of things to eat. Obviously there were the stands at the Market Square or vendors by the river but I opted to try a restaurant version. After some searching, Ocho appeared on my list of suggested places. It may have been a tad weird but my partner and I showed up here around brunch time and just ordered a plate of churros. We had just finished a large breakfast at Schilo's so we weren't in the mood for more than dessert. I was happy to find that Ocho seemed to be a cute place for brunch. Too bad it didn't show up on the results when I was looking for a brunch place. The restaurant itself was tucked away behind Hotel Havana.The outdoor patio area was small and had about four or five tables. There was a small bar as well as bar seating facing the river. I didn't check if there was an indoor section so it could be bigger than I thought. Now, for the reason I even ate here - the churros. I wasn't particularly blown away with their churros though many of the reviews recommended it. I personally thought they were too fried almost burnt. The salty/sweet caramel dipping sauce was delicious! The lemon one was a little too tart for my liking. We came here mainly for their churros. We had a small sweet tooth at the time and found this place. This is tucked away behind a hotel but it is right next to the Riverwalk so the views are amazing and you don't need to deal with the crowds of people. I love the little bar area in the middle of the restaurant that has a small fish tank. I really enjoyed the interior with the chandeliers and the outdoor seating. The churros ($8) themselves were very crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It tasted a little doughy on the inside but it wasn't too noticeable. They came with two sauces: a fruity sauce and a caramel sauce. They both tasted good but I personally liked the caramel one more. Nice little place located downtown. We came by here to celebrate our first night in San Antonio. You cannot beat the views here to eat. Located along side of the river, it is nice and airy. Lots of natural light with stylish interior decoration. The scene is one you can't miss! The food however was average. It was not terrible by all means, but definitely not worth the price you pay for it. I got the pork chop. It was cooked perfectly but the seasoning was a bit bland. The drink I received was too much fruit mixer and not enough alcohol. The service was ok and the waiter was not the most friendly. First of all I love the atmosphere of Ocho and Hotel Havana. It is how I picture Cuba to look like when I do have the chance to visit. It's a very laid back environment and the patio is awesome. Luckily we live in San Antonio so we have the luxury of sitting outside in November. The food was nothing special and the drinks were overpriced. This place is a tiny hole in the wall in the back of the Hotel Havana, so you have to look hard for it, but that makes it an amazing little gem of a restaurant overlooking the river walk. I had the Trucha Frita - a pan seared trout that was possibly some of the most delicious fish I've ever had in my life. The trout was perfect, the shrimp on top was incredibly flavorful, and the garnish and rice were both perfectly done and mouth watering. The whole thing was in a poblano cream sauce that was extraordinarily well done. The atmosphere is unique and had a uniquely local feel. I found it to be one of the coolest little restaurants I've ever come across during any of my different trips for business. Definitely worth taking the time to find! read more
