Me and my sister stopped by this diner after we finished some errands nearby islip terrace. She mentioned that she was REALLY hungry. She yelped it, and this was the first option that appeared, and she drove for a few minutes. As she approached the parking lot, I must say, I was in awe for a couple of seconds. The exterior of the restaurant is surrounded by American flags that exudes a sense of nostalgic Americana. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the host. The waitress was very polite and attentive. The decor of this place is patriotism on steroids...very appropriate for the upcoming, and future presidential campaigns... I'm putting politics aside... this is my review. My sister ordered a bacon cheeseburger deluxe platter. I ordered a hamburger deluxe. The platter is MASIVE! It was topped with two crispy, and piping hot onion rings. The burger itself is really big in size, juicy and delicious. I recommend patrons to come to this place very hungry. Decorated through the gills for any and all holidays, friendly staff, accommodating kitchen staff, good food at a decent price, there is nothing to be disappointed by. I've got to hand it to them - for a diner, this place has amazing food. Granted, I have never had *horrible* food at a diner, but still, they take the cake. No matter what you're in the mood for, they will likely have it on the menu. Not only is it going to be on the menu - it will be made perfectly and to your liking. The wait staff is extremely friendly and attentive, and at any given point during the year you will walk in to what you think is a party. No matter the month, day, time of year - they are always decorated for some sort of holiday or season. It is a huge conversation point and is a nice change from boring diner decor. The one and possibly only detractor is that in the summer it is absolutely freezing inside, so make sure you have a sweatshirt! read more

Stopped in here with my kids on Saturday morning on our way back to Smithtown after our exercise and walking routine at Jones Beach. My kids and I are actively trying new diners after our morning workouts so we can check them all out and see which one rises above the rest. First off, they take their decorating VERY seriously. Every inch of this place is decorated for fall AND Halloween. My kids loved this. Some of the stuff was scary, but mostly all harmless kitschy stuff. When we walked in, we were greeted by an older gentleman who as in a fantastic mood and said a loud and cheery "good morning!" with a smile. Very nice. The girl behind the main counter asked me how many, and then led us to a table by the window. Somebody brought us three waters immediately, and before I knew it, the waitress was there getting our drink orders, and then she took the food orders. She could have easily up-sold me on my son's order, who wanted pancakes, but she converted it to a kids menu item so the drink would be free and my son wouldn't get a massive amount of food. She did the same for my daughter's french toast order too. I ordered a typical egg breakfast with ham. I did order coffee and our server was awesome at keeping me loaded up with fresh coffee. Our food came out within minutes, and everyone was happy with their meals. My son's chocolate chip pancakes tasted awesome, and my daughter's french toast came out with fresh strawberries. They were super happy! My meal was typical diner far, but the homefries were out of this world. Very tasty. The bill was very reasonable for the three of us and it was a great experience with good food and excellent service. Oconee is a quick favorite of mine now....and of my kids! Recommended!! read more

I wanted to take my wife, who was diagnosed with breast cancer, to a special end-of-the-year dining experience. Seeing OED on channel 12 news seemed like the likely place with its decorations and ambiance. I reviewed the WEB page, which was excellent in the description of food items and pleasing photos. It was a ride from Nassau to get there however I wanted to do something special for the end of the year. At first, it seemed that the waitress was rude, and in a rush to get our order. It was about 4:00 pm, and maybe we were in a shift change of servers. After we gave our order after the fourth request for our order, a new waiter came to the table and asked if everything was alright. I requested water. He was more of a conversationalist and attentive to our table. My order of a Philly Cheesesteak was dry and not flavorful. The meat was either overcooked or expired. Sparse in cheese and onion. I wanted to save my poor dining experience, so I order coffee and a Black and White cookie for dessert. I could not believe the cookie was outdated by the dryness. I wanted to pay my tab with an American Express Gift card, which I presented to the first waitress to see if It could be used. She said yes. The second waiter took our American Express card and cash. He returned, saying the card was denied and we had to pay cash. I was lucky to have the funds needed and to give the waiter a 20% tip. The OED was excellent in marketing and Web site; however, the food was more than disappointing. The decorations made it a nice place for young children. I learned my lesson to go to my local diner, THE APOLLO, in East Meadow and not travel to Suffolk. read more

Famous for it's great owner and staff, great food, off the chart decorations and HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR CUSTOMER. Lady, if this was your first time, don't come back. Love a local business that supports Law Enforcement! That's one of the things my husband and I noticed when we were leaving. The diner's entry vestibule is wall to wall photos and plaques supporting LEO's and receiving that support back. The owner himself is in many of the photos. Love! The diner itself, to some people, may be sensory overload. They decorate the entire diner for the holiday they are closest to. Yesterday it was decked out with American Flag everything for the upcoming Labor Day holiday. I happen to adore the decor here. My favorite time to go is Christmas. The decor alone can lift your spirits and I would even come here if the food was mediocre, just for the atmosphere. But that's not the case. The food is actually delicious. I kept it simple yesterday and ordered Manhattan clam chowder and grape leaves with a pita and tzaziki sauce. My husband ordered the Thanksgiving wrap and loved it. It was a huge portion so he brought half home but the flavor was on point. I took a couple bites to try it. It literally had the taste of Thanksgiving. :) My tzaziki sauce was thick and creamy how I like it. Not a fan of "watery" sauce like some places have. The soup was good too. Nothing spectacular but definitely good. Same with the grape leaves. The only disappointment was that we weren't given bread when we sat down. I assumed because we didn't order a "dinner item" but the table that got sat next to us received bread before ordering so not sure if it was a timing thing or our waitress forgot. Honestly, as big as the meal portions were we probably didn't need any bread but I do like to have that option. We did however get a wrapped cookie at the end of our meal which was a nice treat. Waitress was friendly and attentive. We did have to ask for drink refills but she brought them quickly. For what you get here, the price is right. And you can't beat the atmosphere. Came here to feed my preggy cuz after a friend's birthday party. This is a typical diner, nothing too different about it l, save for the fact that they take their holidays very seriously. The place was decked out in Halloween decor, throughout with talking scary monsters, offering up trays of tootsie roll pops. We were say immediately but our server seemed a bit off. He seemed irritated for whatever reason and had an attitude the entire team we were there. I won't speculate but it felt weird. We were going to Southside Hospital and needed a quick lunch before visiting my aunt, and this was 5 minutes down the road. Upon pulling into the parking lot we knew it was going to be a great experience. The sign for the Oconee is a nautical theme, but the decor for yesterday was all Christmas! Blow up features outside, along with lots of tinsel and garland. Inside was mind-blowing with all of the holiday items hanging from the ceiling -- well, actually everywhere. Really brought a smile to our faces and I could not help but think that the owners really love their customers to put so much time (and money) into the decor. Now that I read more of the reviews I see that they do this every holiday. The service was fast and friendly. Our lunch came out in a few minutes. My son drank his soda quickly and they came with a free refill before even asking. I had the french onion soup which was absolutely delicious. Flavorful, jus the right amount of cheese melted on top. (sometimes diners put too much and it is difficult to eat, but not the Oconee!) My son had bacon, eggs and hash browns. I would say that the only complaint was the bacon which wasn't crispy and somehow didn't have much flavor. But the hashbrowns were delicious. I'm an Army veteran and this is my first time visiting this diner. Red white and blue decorations, blue lives matter flags, and a sign saying "Our flag won't fly without the troops" at the front desk. I thought this place is very patriotic so out of curiosity I asked about military discount. I was told "Sorry we don't have military discount". I'm totally fine with that answer, it doesn't hurt to ask. However, at the check out desk a customer showed up with his MAGA hat and got a free dessert. That got me curious where they put their priorities. From what it looks like this diner is just another establishment of giving lip service to the troops. Food took some time to come out which is understandable, however, food was cold by the time it got to me and I was missing parts of my order. My server was nice but not customer centric. I'm not sure if he was aware of his behavior. I should have mentioned it to him since I always want people to be their best at their jobs. Management should have a meeting with their staff to make sure everyone is okay. Working during this time can be tough, but please check in with your workers and make sure they're treated well and are appreciated. At this time, I won't be returning back to this diner. read more
