Love Off Broadway and have added it to the list of great smaller venues to enjoy all kinds of live music. Great patio out front, love the big bar, staff is always nice and in good moods to talk with everyone. Decent venue, gets super hot inside and quickly, staff weren't very efficient with... anything. Drove five and a half hours for a concert here. After the concert, a whole bunch of people were outside waiting to meet the band when a worker came out and yelled at us to leave "her" sidewalk because they needed space to load up even though they had unloaded with a line of us there hours prior. She threatened to call the cops on us and was overall very, very rude despite the fact 3/5 members of the band told us that they would come back out to sign things and say hello. Please do better! There is no need to be rude and threaten to call the cops on a large group of teens when all we were doing was trying to meet people were fans of! read more

I haven't been to many venues around here so I don't have too much to compare to but I had a very enjoyable night and no complaints. Went to see Star wolf and a couple openers(Bo and the locomotive as well as Nick gusman and the coyotes) which were all very enjoyable bands. They had a wide drink selection including a lot of local brews which was nice to see. Pricing was very reasonable. read more

Awesome location to have seen the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Parking was surprisingly convenient and the atmosphere is super cool. The location is apparently a converted service station which is now a great venue for events. The band was very close to essentially anywhere you would stand and the venue offered a nice array of beer selections. I'm not sure if there was food since I did not look for it, but overall it was a great experience and I would recommend it. I've been wanting to see the Squirrel Nut Zippers since I first heard about them in 1996 so it was very cool to be so up close in this intimate event setting. read more

The show we wanted to see was sold out early and we couldn't find any resellers online, so we took a chance and showed up anyway. Karma was on our side-a patron had 2 extra tickets they asked the door to sell. WhooHoo! We were really impressed with the venue, a campfire was burning in the courtyard and the space where the show was small enough you were never far from the band. This is a great little place to see a concert! It is literally off the beaten path near some warehouses. Once you enter the building, you are pleasantly surprised! To the left, you enter the stage area. There is not too much seating on the main floor. A few small tables and chairs, but not many. So, if you are determined to sit, get there early! There was more seating upstairs. Most of the area i front of the stage is standing room. Having the stage so close gives it a personal feel, where you are up close with the band. The stage is a nice size! Of to the side of the stage is a walk up bar. This bar has an awesome selection of drinks! I was happy to see many local craft beers! They offer some on draft and also have a good selection of cans. Oh, and another bonus...they sell ear plugs! Bar service is friendly and fast! There is also an outside seating area that has a fire pit during the fall/winter. It is nice they have an outdoor sitting area in case you want to step out to cool off for a moment. Got to see a friends band perform the other night here. They have a great space with an outdoor patio and fire pit in addition to two inside bars, a big open space and balcony to watch from above. There is plenty of parking along the street however no actual lot so you might end up walking a bit. While the space was cool it seemed to not run as smoothly as it could have. They had multiple issues with their check in machine the night we were there and their projector light bulb was broken the day of the show even though they had told bands they would be able to use that feature. Overall nice just needs to be maintained a little more read more

I am surrounded by live music in Soulard, but Off Broadway offers the best talent in the area. I am almost embarassed to admit how little I hung out at OB during my twenties and early thirties. However, I spent much of my twenties in Springfield, MO, but this venue was never on the radar when I would come home to visit. My first time actually took place recently when I started getting involved in the St. Louis local music scene. One of my friends from an Open Mic Night had a gig there, and we went just to check out the place and support his band. Instantly, I was a fan. I just love the set up. The room is quite spacious. However, add the balcony for the cool kids and the patio for the smokers and assorted mayhem, and we have a nice hangout. I can't say that I'm overly impressed with the sound, but it's adequate for the room. In addition, the people who work here are actually cool! That quality can be rare at a music venue anywhere. What truly makes this venue is the talent that it brings in. OB partners with 88.1 FM KDHX to invite the best indie and small artists, both local and national. Recently, we saw Tennis, an indie pop band from Denver. We had a great view, not a bad seat in the house, and show was a lot of fun. Mostly, we've seen local bands. Either way, I always look foward to our next visit to Off Broadway. read more

What an awesome little venue, I would love to see it on a Saturday night. You walk up and it has an amazing outdoor patio with a fire pit. The stage is very intimate, with only a few seats, but plenty of room to stand. There's not a bad spot in the house. Their upstairs balcony is a perfect spot to chill and listen to music, it was my favorite part. There were plenty of bars throughout, and they seemed really efficient. I have played everywhere in St. Louis over the years.. From CbGb's tiny bar to the huge stage at the Pageant. I have always loved ST. Lou, what a great rock and roll town.. Chuck Berry and Tina Turner would be proud of this place! 24 ounce Stag beers can be purchased! Enough said right... Off Broadway is a perfect size club. Big enough to get loud and rock hard, but small enough to feel intimate where ever you land that night. They even have a killer court yard, that the smokers hang in, and a balcony with a cool row of seats for watching the shows from above! The venue is kinda older and legendary, and from the outside you might think it's divey, but really it's pretty clean all around including the bathrooms! I got the opportunity to play the other night and the Sound Man Bart was a true professional and very welcoming and willing to help get exactly what ever artist needed for the evening! All and all I was very excited to finally get a chance to play here and I had an excellent time! My kinda club! read more

The music was great, as I expected. Parking lot across the street was convenient. The venue is very hot inside and everyone stands around and sweats. If you enjoy standing and sweating this is the place for you. We like a seat when listening to a band so we bought balcony seats months ahead immediately when they went on sale. The website doesn't provide photo's of balcony seating and they don't offer assigned seats. It appears that they sell 40-45 balcony seats, but only about 12 of those seats have an unobstructed view of the stage. We arrived an hour early only to find that the unobstructed view seats had "Reserved" signs on them. I feel like I was ripped off by paying a higher ticket cost and having to stand so we could look over or between the people seated at the peephole balcony windows. The balcony quickly feels claustrophobic. That feeling made me look for a way out in case of an emergency. The balcony has 1 way out. In the event of a fire or other emergency, you've got a major problem. I don't how this venue meets local fire code. read more

There's a funny story revolving around how I ended up at Off Broadway back in November. It's too long to describe here, but I'll tell you that the name "Off Broadway" or even the street name "Broadway" was a little misleading to someone traveling from another city. Long story short, we walked 2 miles from our hotel to the venue through what was probably the worst part of Saint Louis thinking we would be walking through an art district. So when we finally saw a sign in the distance that read "Off Broadway", we ran towards it with vigor! The venue itself is large, with a long bar running against one wall. The stage is in the front of the building and barely elevated. Lots of standing room and a balcony overlooking the stage can hold a pretty large crowd. Though I noticed the bathrooms are located all the way in the back of the building, which makes for a difficult trek if the place is packed. The drinks were reasonably priced and strong! Maybe the inside isn't laid out as well as it could be, but you can pack a large diverse crowd inside, and the atmosphere feels fun and friendly. read more

I came here with some friends to see someone in a band that we knew. It was pretty fun. You can get up close and personal with the musicians, people are friendly and you can have some nice drinks while you enjoy the scene. There is a small balcony upstairs for 20 or so people to sit and watch with a neat view. Smoking has been moved outside, to a heated patio. I am looking forward to my next visit here. read more

We visited for the first time this week for an all ages event with our nieces and nephews. The manager/bartender seemed to be having a very bad day. He was very upset about serving juice boxes and let everyone know about his displeasure. We saw him raise his voice and use foul language in front of kids when he was upset with another customer at the end of the evening. read more

I can't believe I have never done a review for Off Broadway. Well..here.we.go. Off Broadway is part of St. Louis, period! I recently saw one of my favorite bands of 2012 at Off Broadway to a sold out crowd. The recent upgrades to the bar offered up a lot more room and the crowds are always so much fun. When I was there recently they were highlighting some New Belgium brews (Fat Tire) so you definitely can enjoy a great band along with a fine brew. One last tip: Make sure you use their paid secure lot across the street for parking. Bottom line: Great bands play here. Off Broadway = A fine St. Louis music establishment. read more

Let me explain: Imagine a great space with a nice stage, a big bar, and plenty of standing/seating room. Now, fill it with douchebags. That's Off Broadway. Packed to the brim with 3rd-wave, half-ass hipsters, the venue specializes in the new St Louis sound: Spineless Indie. When they say, "Rock," they mean, "Indie Rock." When they say, "Electronica," they mean, "Indie Electronica." When they say, "Beer," they mean, "Pabst Blue Ribbon." Lastly, when they say patrons, they mean, "bespectacled, plaid- wearing yuppies." I do have to say, though. It's a nice space, and the sound is good. It's a real shame that it's wasted on the RFT set. read more

Easily becoming one of my favorite places in St. Louis. Upon a great recommendation from KDHX (thanks, you know I love you guys!) Simon and I saw another fabulous show at Off Broadway last night. As this was a duo of two acoustic (dare I say folk?) musicians, they had set up the crowd with tables and chairs instead of standing room. It gave the show an upscale and intimate setting which was cool. As always, the bartenders were friendly and the drinks moderately priced. I will second Lulu who mentioned that Off Broadway is non-smoking. It really is nice not to have to go home reeking like an ash tray. I have to agree with the explanations of two of the previous reviews from Kelly P.m and Maggie F. This is a great small venue off the beaten path, but well worth the drive. We got there early, because I read seating was limited. Doors opened sharply at 7 like advertised and there were about 5 tables and chair available on the main floor . The balcony wasn't open the night we were there. It was nice surprise to see that the reviews I had read were still accurate, some being dated over 5 years ago. There is a gas station right on the corner near Off Broadway also, if you need gas( they close by 10) I would highly recommend this place to see some great music. read more

I recently had the pleasure of coming to Off Broadway to see The Staves perform. I read so many great Yelp reviews of this place that I was excited to visit. I had no trouble finding a parking spot. I don't think they have their own lot but there is plenty of street parking that you don't have to walk more than a couple blocks for (unless you get there early). The size of the venue is perfect. It is large enough to fit a lot of people but small enough to feel very intimate. I stayed on the main floor but they had a balcony-type area you could go watch/sit at to view the performance as well. I wasn't feeling very well so I was not up for exploring. Upon my next visit I will explore more of the area to tell you all about it! I would recommend this place to anyone! read more

Maybe I love Off Broadway because I got to watch an old college friend play there with his band, Black Joe Lewis & The Honey Bears (he's the smiliest sax player I know!). Maybe I love it because it felt like a hip, protective bomb shelter during the mad thunderstorm taking place outside the night we visited. I know I love Off Broadway because it's a non-smoking venue (and look at that, they're still in business! Miracles do happen! [sarcasm]). And I absolutely love the intimacy of the space--it's small and standing-room, so you're able to get up-close and personal with some of your favorite musicians (as long as there are no douchey patrons waving their Stag tall boys in front of your face, EXCUSE ME, YOU JERKS!). Off Broadway really is a terrific place to see a show. It's pretty cheap, sound is great, booze is a-flowin' and aside from the aforementioned doucheys (douchies?), my live music experience there was really tops. I am still kicking myself for missing Mumford & Sons. Dang. read more

Off Broadway is a fantastic venue for a show! Most of my shows are at The Firebird, but I've still been to a ton at Off Broadway. There's much to love about this little neighborhood venue! First off, staffers are super friendly. Even when you're walking in the door buying or picking up tickets, the staffers will chat and joke with you, making you feel immediately welcomed and appreciated. Inside, your eyes will alight at all the room in front of the stage. Don't get me wrong; the venue is small, so it's not like you'll be dancing with 2000 of your best friends. But the venue is laid out in a way that maximizes the prime dancing/jumping/gawking real estate in front of the stage. And look up! You can see old signage and beams and ancient metal things while you're waiting for the show to start. Inside, Off Broadway is smokefree - yay! There's a patio for smokers outside. Sometimes the smoky smell wafts through the open patio door, which I don't love. If you're sensitive to that like I am, try to stand further away or at an angle from the door. I don't sit or drink, so I can't comment on the seats or the bar. Friends seem to think they're swell, though. Shows generally are $10-20, depending on the act. I've been particularly enamoured with the Will Hoge show in 2009 (just after his car accident recovery, so he was seated and doing acoustic stuff) and the Ted Leo show this year (solo, opinionated, mouthy, funny - just like I like him). Generally speaking, Off Broadway books a lot of indie rock acts, but the do have kid-friendly and niche performers, too. And this is yet another fabulous St. Louis venue that embraces local acts. Many bands have their CD release parties and shows at Off Broadway, and those are among my favorite shows ever. Parking is available along the streets around Off Broadway, including right outside the door. Even though I'm a scrawny girl, I never am afraid when I'm walking from the venue to my car after a show (generally midnight). read more

Off Broadway has been whipped into the best venue in St. Louis. My only gripe is with the bartending. When busy b/c of a band, it can be truly difficult to get attention at the bar and because of the setup, everyone passes by the bar coming in. I can't take too much off the rating because I don't usually drink much at shows. However, the sound here is truly fantastic, the smoking courtyard (no smoking - yay!) is cool, the building is very cool in that timeless bar way, usually good bands, etc. etc. I can't vouch for the food, but it is a great place for a show. read more

I am insanely amused that the Ambience heading just reads "hipster" With its premature smoking ban (a full 2 years before legally required) and its anti-AB stance (a sign above the bar loudly and proudly proclaims that they sell NO AB) the place is certainly unique. What strikes me most is the layout - aside from the bar which can bottleneck things a bit. The bands are given, pardon the pun, center stage. The sound guy is tucked away, so as not to intrude on the crowd and the smoking patio is perfectly tucked away so as not to offend the non-smoking portion of the crowd. As a performer, i can appreciate the great stage set-up and soundman. As a drinker, I can appreciate the beers on display. As an ex-smoker, I can appreciate the concessions made to keep the smokers happy. And musically, between booking great bands and doing shows in conjunction with KDHX, the crew at OB keep music interesting in this portion of town. read more

Bottom Line: Intimate and Historic Concert Venue, Good Choices at the Bar, Friendly Staff. Overview: Attended a concert featuring Crater and TR/ST (a search for "Trust" may work, as well) last night. Worthwhile Electropop, if that is your thing. This venue features a stage with a bar nearby, decent floor space that could probably fit 50 standing people comfortably and mezzanine seating for those who wish to relax during the show, There are also high chairs or "bar chairs" with backs around a portion of the perimeter of the floor. I call this out for the older music fans who might need to take a quick break. There is also an outdoor bar with patio seating. I was told there is sometimes food from a food truck for larger audiences. The building itself appears to be historic as it sits near the old Lemp Brewery. It is made of red brick. Lavatories are on the main floor level and kept up. (That's important!) As far as parking, there is fairly ample street parking. Further down the street, I noticed a lit up, yellow sign with missing letters. I am fairly sure it said "Off Broadway Secure Parking". Some letters were missing from the sign. Summary: After living in Saint Louis for my lifetime, I had not once stepped foot into Off Broadway. I must admit, I was disappointed that I waited so long. If a band you are even the slightest interested in checking out is playing here, I would not hesitate to grab a ticket. Side Note: This venue offered ticket sales through Ticketfly. There was about a $3 service fee on a ticket purchase. I opted to just buy a ticket in person the night of the show. read more

It's a small, easy to miss building, which lends to the intimacy of the venue. It was standing room with a limited balcony (maybe 20 or so hard, wooden seats) when I saw mewithoutyou play there last week. The staff was nice enough. My biggest complaint, other than the incredible heat that builds up in that place, was the sound. Unfortunately the sound guy could not figure out how to turn the vocals up, which pretty well ruined a show that relies heavily on vocals. Everyone I talked to at the show agreed. read more

For so long I have heard about this little music venue on Lemp Ave and how it's considered one of the best in St. Louis. I also heard about how this place had no smoking, had awesome music and cold drinks at a decent price. Needless to say I wasn't disappointed I went to Off Broadway for a show. This place reminds me of a dive bar. It's not a place that's amazing to look at. The focus is and always on the music on stage. Not saying the place is ugly, but if your here then you really could care less on how this place looks. If you get there early enough you can get a table and enjoy a show. Or join the people near the stage and enjoy some quality music. The sound quality is also very good. Not too loud but not too soft either. There sound guy(s) know the place and get the most of out it. Not a lot of lighting if any for this place. Then again this is a concert venue and you usually don't need a lot of light. Just enough to get around and not run into people. The bartenders are pretty good here. Not the best I've seen but they do the job quite well. The drinks here aren't too bad either. And before you ask, no...there are no AB products served at OB (read the sign when you get there). And most of the time the cover price is reasonable ($5-10). Also you can just order tickets online as well. St. Louis is a music city through and through and Off Broadway is one of those mid-size venues that shows how unique this city is music wise. Now I will say Off Broadway does not have as diverse of a line up as say The Gramophone but it has a charm and attitude that makes the venue stand out from many others in the city. read more

Great place to watch shows and relax with friends. The floor is open enough to pack right up to the stage or back off around 30 feet to linger against the wall or poles. Regardless of where you're standing the sets feel pretty intimate. There's even a second level, which is cool although it doesn't have the best views. Drinks are cheap and plentiful. They have some decent things on tap, but, come on, if you're coming for a typical show you should be drinking the good stuff. They even have an outside patio area that often has a guy grilling on it. Great place to relax in between bands. Also, it's not far from Cherokee Street so there's plenty to do in the area before shows. Basically, this is one of my favorite places to watch touring bands in STL. read more
