This review is not about the staff at this location. The several persons we dealt with today were great and went out of their way. (Without them, this would be a 1 star review.) We are in the process of moving and are in need of packing supplies. We've used our storage facility for supplies as well as another local shipping store. Office Max had good prices on bubble wrap, tape, and boxes. There were several buy 2, get one free, or buy, 3, get one free specials. Great. Today, our second visit for these, I actually checked my receipt. None of the "discounts" appeared correct. Some double charges, some zero charges for products. Well, whereas there was some human errors also, the vast majority were "software issues". We bought 2 types of bubble wrap, 3 sizes of boxes, and 1 type of tape, all on special plus some non-sale items. Rather than charging the advertised rates, the computer system does the following: (these are made up numbers for example) bubble size 1: $30 , bubble size 2: $20, Tape $10. So rather than charging 30, 30, 30, (-30), 20, 20, 20, (-20), 10, 10, 10, (-10). It was 30, 30, 30, 20, 20, 20, 10, 10, 10, (-10), (-10), (-10). So, we had to haul all of the merchandise back in, refund it all, then do several individual sales. (The same for the 3 size boxes, 4 each). Result, about 20 extra minutes for us and the staff and a $50 refund for us. Thanks to the staff, but booo to the company for the rip-off. read more

I came here looking for 60 packs of index cards. A big order and after waking around for a while was able to find a store clerk to help me out. He did a search on his machine and found they had more in stock. We went looking for them in storage and found them all. Overall it was great service and really enjoyed my service here at office max. This is your average Office Max. Nothing special. If you need some paper or some office supplies, you'll probably find them here. Keep your expectations under control, and you won't be disappointed. Customer service is relatively good here. I've never had a bad experience. I don't recommend coming here for home electronics or high-end computer equipment. Shop at Fry's or Best Buy for that. I also don't recommend buying office furniture here. They've got some but it's very low quality. This store would get much higher marks if they just kept it simple in the merchandise Department. read more

NEVER IN MY LIFE have I parked after hours at a business in a big empty lot and returned a few hours later to my car being held hostage by a private company! "pay $80 or we'll have it towed. Horrible place with mixed messages. Upon entering the store, I read a sign saying that masks were optional for those that are fully vaccinated. Being vaccinated myself, I went into the store without a mask. Almost immediately one of the employees (young white kid with blonde hair) walks up to me in a confrontational tone and asks 'CAN I HELP YOU?!?! and "Do you have a mask?" I told him that the sign on the front door states that those that are vaccinated do not need to wear masks. He replies with "yeah whatever" like he doesn't believe and leaves in a hissy fit. Funny though how they never said anything to the light skinned Asian lady that was walking in the store without a mask but when they see a brown skinned person doing the same it feels like the pre civil rights movement all over again. And this happened in Alameda of all places, which I thought was a place that practiced "love and tolerance". This is a standard Office Max. I come here for the convenience in location to the Alameda South Shore Center. There's always plentiful parking right outside or you can park anywhere else at the Center and then walk over. The store can get really busy around back to school time because they normally have great sales on school supplies like pens, pencils, highlighters, and scissors. I bought a pair of scissors for $0.50! They also, at times, have Crystal Geyser 24 bottle flats at 2 for $5! That beats Walmart prices! The reason it only earns 3 stars instead of 4 is because sometimes they close earlier than their listed times and they don't seem to restock quickly. The Office Max I used to go to in Santa Cruz used to always restock and had employees that welcomed you when you walked in and asked if you needed help finding something. Normally I don't need help but it's good to know that if I was in a hurry, someone would be able to direct me right away. read more

I needed a quick color print job and called ahead for the e-mail address so that I could place my request. I mentioned that I needed color prints during the call. The cashier did not inform me that they had a big print job which was in process and there would be a wait. Once I arrived, she said "did you send an e-mail", therefore she was expecting me in a sense. She only told me it would be a 30 minute wait after she took my order. I asked if that order was in progress when I called and she stated that it had been printing for a while now. I would not have wasted my time coming had I known about the delay. This review is based on my experience many years ago but I remembered just now and it still pisses me off so had to write one. I bought a $160 calculator for school and paid in cash. Right after my purchase, I found my old calculator and had no more use for the new one that I hadn't even opened yet. I went back to return the item unopened and provided a receipt. They denied my return because I did not have a Driver's license (I was only 16 at the time) and they would not accept my school ID. But they had no problem taking my money in cash 2 days prior.... anyways, I had to go home and come back with a parent for a cash refund even though I had a receipt. No where in their return policy did it state I needed to provide a Drivers license/California ID. Pisses me off just thinking about it again. read more

I always had a positive experience when using OfficeMax printing. I'm a senior and I find it easier to have the desk person to print my documents. i'm usually in and out in 10 minutes. Today I was in there for a good 20 minute with one person ahead of me and the new manager asked me why I don't print it out myself(as he walked away) Too bad I've always liked going there. I was in need of ink for an older printer I owned so I went into the store after searching for a few minutes I was approached by one of their friendly staff asking if they could help me. I explained I was looking for ink for an older printer. After searching for a few minutes we couldn't seem to find it then she said let her look online. She was able to google the model I had and help me find the correct ink I needed. The price was a bit high I replied so she asked if was in the market for a new printer, I said not really. But she said they had a few good sales on newer models and the ink isn't as costly when replacing. I was shocked by all the new features the newer printer had. My 5 Stars may seem very out of the ordinary, given the current Star average... but you've gotta hear me out. The moment we walk into the store, we were greeted by this nice girl, asking us if we needed help finding anything today. I thanked her for her help and told her that we were okay for now. As we walked over the Pen section, I noticed that everything was very well organized and well-stocked. I then decided to look around the neighboring aisles and racetrack... they were all organized and well-kept. After 5 minutes of looking, I found the Pens I needed to buy. As we were walking toward the registers, a nice young gentleman asked us if we found everything okay and if we needed any further assistance. Twice in one trip within a 10 min span? I must be smoking something. This is OfficeMax for crying out loud! At the registers while waiting in the very short line, I overheard one of the associates pitch their Replacement Plan. Given that I work in retail, I enjoyed hearing her approach. She presented it very professionally, with a lot of detail, and seemed to really stand by the product and Plan. I guess the customers liked it too because they said yes and went with the Plan. We were called over to another register where we were greeted by a nice older lady. She asked me if I was part of their MaxPerks program. It's like a frequent flyers card, but for OfficeMax. Given that I just encountered the best chain Office Supply store experience ever, I couldn't say no. Two minutes later, I walked out of the store with a 3-pack of pens, and am now a OfficeMax rewards member. Was this a fluke? Maybe we'll see on my next pen-purchase, eh? read more

I am still scratching my head. I take in some inkjet cartridges for re-filling during the school supply buying season, probably this store's black-friday. I understand the stress of working with young kids and alpha-mothers insistent on quick and accurate service and here's me, I just need to get my printer working. No one greeted me with a smile and everyone seemed very busy though there was hardly a crush of customers and only one person in line for checkout. I was curtly directed by an employee to the customer service desk where I waited an unnecessarily long time to be told they could not get the re-fills done then, they'd need a day to complete my request. I couldn't really care, so dropped off my empties, gave my info, and was on my way. Not the next day, or the next, but 72 hours later I returned to pick up my fully loaded cartridges. It was a weekend morning, hardly anyone was in the store. Again, I waited for a seemingly long time for help. This time was more frustrating as a manager and employee were having a personal conversation not more than 15 feet away from me and didn't once pause to even consider helping me. Maybe it wasn't their responsibility, but it sure felt like being put off. Eventually, a worker did swoop in to give me my ink. Surprise! The work wasn't done. The employee graciously offered to get the job done while I waited... it would take 10 minutes. Seriously? 10 minutes? Why wasn't this done in the first place, while, I don't know, did some shopping in the store?!? Sometimes store policies and assignments defeat the purpose of business: to provide good service to separate myself from my money. Office max just doesn't get it. read more

My one & only visit here in search of some printer ink proved my theory to be correct: Big supply stores like these need to work on NOT letting their employees form an annoying, gossipy clique between themselves & stare, snicker, and act awkward towards customers who come in the door... Today was great. I think the cashier did a fabulous job. Too bad I didn't get her name. There was an older customer at the register. She took a little longer. It was understandable. I looked around and there wasn't another cashier in sight. I understand it's hard to keep staff and maybe a lot of people asked for the day off. The associate kept looking around looking for additional help. The customer took a little longer at the register. She asked questions. The associate did not rush her. She went on the other register. She helped the next guest in line and kept the line moving. So she was working two registers at one time to make sure the line was moving faster. Great customer service. read more

Do NOT buy refurbished computers from Office Depot/Max. I was sent one that had a failed hard drive. The options I was given were to return it or to send it back to have the hard drive replaced (a 30 day process when shipping is figured). I was told I could return it at the store. The store said I could not return it to them. They said call the 800 number so I did where I was put on hold for 30 minutes and then hung up on. When I called back to talk with a supervisor, naturally none was available. The rep I spoke with said she would send an escalated message to the vendor to have them process the return and arrange for UPS to pick it up even though the vendor told me they don't handle returns. So I have to sit around for UPS to contact me to pick up the product. She did not know if they could send me a label so that I could return it to a UPS store to be shipped rather than wait for a phone call. Overall I had a horrible experience. The manager at the Office Depot store was not helpful. read more

I live right across the street so I find that when I need something quickly and I'm too lazy to drive to Walgreens I can just come to Office Max. I'm giving their print center 1 star because they truly have the worst customer service. It's not that people are rude it's that they don't have enough people working behind the counter for one. But actually getting something printed takes forever. I sent as print job of 12 colored sheets in 12x12 paper last night at 10:30 pm. I stopped by at 1 pm thinking they were done. After the 1 and only lady working looked for about 5 minutes and after repeated attempts from me to just look up my order she finally did and found that no one had worked on it. Her excuse: they were swamped that morning. Fine. BUT then she proceeds to tell me that my order won't be ready until tonight or tomorrow morning. For TWELVE sheets! I'm not asking them to print a book. I told her to go ahead and cancel it because I needed the order now which she then said she would print it out right then. Yay. Not. Because then it took forever to download so I said I'd be back. 30 minutes later. Someone else is working behind the counter while the original lady was helping someone out. She again could not find my order but what I found to be annoying was the way she was cleaning up while looking for my order. With 5 people behind me also waiting to be served I found this to be so ignorant of your surroundings. Turns out, my order hadn't been completed! UGH. The original girl forgot about my order. So the 2nd lady helping me talks to her and she says she'll be right back and then never comes back. :| Finally the original girl pulls out 12x18 glossy paper, because they couldn't print 12x12 and I told her that I didn't want glossy but she said that was the only 12 inched paper they had available. Then why did your computer system allow me to choose non-glossy!!! Oh man. I will never be printing anything from here ever again. I just dealt with a very unprofessional store manager at this Office Max location. They would not waive a 15% restocking fee for a defective router that I purchased less than 24 hours ago. I provided two options: either give me a full refund or allow me to exchange for another model as long as the restocking fee is waive, since the device, according to online reviews, has known problems and is defective. His only option to me was to exchange it for the "same" product and model; otherwise, I would be subjected to the restocking fee. I called the corporate customer service hotline after I left the store. The associate told me that, because the device was defective, I indeed could have exchanged it for another router, if not receive a full refund. She called the store manager and let him know the company's real return policy. (I would give OfficeMax headquarters 5 stars if I could.) I can't believe that anyone would have to go through all of this just to return or exchange a defective device that was purchased less than 24 hours ago. After I got my full refund offered to me by their headquarters, I went to an Apple store to pick up an AirPort Extreme... because I know, even if I picked up a defective device there, they have a great support team that will help me with my problems and not give me more problems. Skip this store until their management understands the meaning of professionalism and customer service, especially since electronics can sometimes be defective (especially with routers), and you'll have to go through the hassle I just went through to return the device. read more

Came here for some back to school supplies because they had a sale. Only thing is, they decided not to put some of the sale prices in their computer. I had to show the cashier a photo of the price that is so obviously marked in their store while I checked out because it didn't automatically show up. She was rude about it. Not my fault your system is a POS. Then, when I walked to the car I noticed something else hadn't been charged the sale price, so I had to go back in, take a picture, wait in their loooong line, and talk to the same lady who gave me attitude about getting a refund. She only gave me part of my money back because I used a coupon for my purchase 10 min prior. What the heck??? I should not be punished because your system made an error on my original receipt. Whether I used a coupon on that purchase or not, I should still get ALL my money back since even with the discount my purchase was still over the necessary amount to use the coupon. I had to be transferred over to another cashier just to get my remaining balance back. It's ridiculous that I should have to fight them to get money back on something that should have been discounted in the first place. ALWAYS check your receipt from here! Every time I come into this store there is a really long line. You see people standing behind the FedEx counter, people standing behind the photo counter (or whatever that is along the side wall), someone fussing with a display and 1 ONE cashier. The others will help grudgingly when the line starts snaking along with 5 or 6 people, but grudgingly. And heaven forbid they allow a line to form anywhere other than the one massive line in front of the sole cashier. Always frustrating. Our most recent trip to Office Max was to get ink for our crappy Epson Printer. I was annoyed when the ink was going to cost about $100.00. We were being assisted by the sales associate JOHN G. He was helping us choose our ink selection and was GREAT. He offered the very BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE and remained FRIENDLY & PROFESSIONAL the entire time. He was also a great salesman lol because he explained to us that Office Max was offering a promotion to customers: which offered a trade-in for old printers ($50 credit) towards a new one. Now of course the printer we chose was not included in this promotion but that's just how it goes. Nonetheless, this sales guy went over many printers with us and explained all the pro's, cons and features. When we chose a printer that matched our needs and we wanted to buy, we quickly became disappointed and discouraged because the print quality was poor (NOTE: It was a floor model). However the sales guy assured us that this printer was still a great choice and said he would show us so. He took time to clean it and change the ink and sure enough - IT WAS A GREAT PRINTER. We bought it and love it. EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. read more

Every time I go here I guess I'm just unfortunate that staff I come in contact with are not friendly and always seem to be gloomy while working. -When my parents were here making copies I had to drive from home to meet them there to help them because they said that the person working at the counter didn't bother asking if they needed help, after they've been there for more than 30 minutes. -I needed several pages printed and binded, there was only one other customer at the same time as me. I Walk in at 5:50pm and the first thing a staff member tells me is "We are closing in 10 minutes" .I had already looked up the store hours and only needed two high resolution copies. When I get to the print desk, another associate tells me, we are closed. I thought they closed at 6 and she no we (the print center) close earlier at 5:30pm. The store hours online do not indicate that. I only needed her to use her fancy printer to make two colored copies. I then go the self serve machines and two are broken. Two other customers are ahead of me. The energy and pressure all the customers felt was unacceptable. Does this establishment want business or not? Don't make your customers feel unwelcome- we understand you close at 6pm but in most customers service industries, it's understood you may need to stay open 10 to 15 minutes extra. To top it off my colored copies came out blue when the original was white. I feel bad for the dozen other customers in there with me trying to GIVE YOU BUSINESS. I normally do not shop at Officemax. I have always tended to shop at Office Depot for my office needs. But I had such a horrible experience at the Office Depot in Emeryville I have sworn off Office Depot all together. I needed some ink for my printer and went in to this Officemax. I was surprised when I walked in the door (every other Officemax I had gone into I could never find anyone to help me) I was greeted when I walked, in, handed an ad, and asked if I needed help finding anything. I only go there cuz I live 2 blocks away. I go about once a year and it feels like going in for root canal. Once I was sold a printer that didn't work and they told me since I didn't buy the warranty after 45 days I was LOL. I have never recieved any technical advice about cartridiges or printers that was reliable. I bring stuff to the counter and ask questions, I am elderly, and they make me put it back if it's the wrong thing even if someone on the floor told me the paper would or wouldn't work in my printer also incoorect sold me paper to thick for my printer. Self serve copy machine jammed on me the other day and I couldn't get help for awhile. Just a nightmare place. Know exactly what you want and why and don't talk to anyone. read more

The prices are comparable to Staples and Office Depot. All the office and/or back to school supplies you need. They also have a printing department, which I don't care too much for. When it comes to printing, I'd rather support the locals. Their Black Friday deals are pretty good. One thing I do really like is that any purchase over $50 can be delivered free of charge, which is crucial for office furniture items i.e. a desk. Service isn't great. What happened to the days where you could buy just one pen, one pencil, one refill of scotch tape? Why is everything sold in packs of multiples? Not everyone needs multiple packs of pens, scotch tape, envelopes, and other items. Also where are the employees when you have a question, there were very few people in the store, and not very many employees to be found. The Sales Associate at the register was busy talking to someone in her headset than to help greet me hello, she just asked me if I found what I was looking for (like there was any free employee to help me if I didn't).
