It is Office Max...how excited can you get about pens, pencils and paper. If you have been to one you have been to them all. Hell if you have been to Staples that is good enough to count. It is great if you need it right now and can't jack the stuff from your office. I guess it could be good if you want to be the envy of the Office with your new Uniball Triptilex 9000c but if this is the case I think you have bigger issues. Service here is disgraceful. Usually there is only one staff member to be found in the entire store, and it's a BIG store. Today, three lonely customers -- myself included -- were forced to wait for about 15 minutes while the "General Manager" (who was also the ONLY cashier and the ONLY salesperson on the floor) attended to a customer with a complex printing job. I found the chair pad I wanted to buy on the Office Max website. When I got to the store and asked about the mat, the cashier said they didn't have them. I showed her the link to the item that I had on my phone and one of the clerks went to find it. When I got home and unrolled the mat, it was too big and lacked a lip. My free, $30 paper shredder I had for 8 years crapped out last december so I went to office max and spent $100 on a new one. Light use, home office. Well, it stopped working last month, 10 months after I got it. Had a 1 year limited warrenty (which means absolutely jack to office depot). The guy I dealt with today, all he wanted to do was tell me I was out of luck. No help, no nothing, get me out the door it was my problem, out of luck. Then when I looked online it said they had them in stock but only online. So I went back in and showed him that they had them in stock online. He wouldn't order one and let me return it because that's not office depot policy. He said I had to call Nuova, the shredder brand and deal with them, which neither one of us could find online. It only showed the office depot site that had them. I could go on and on like the yelpers on South Park eating boogers and cum but I'll end it here. Office Max on Leary in Ballard. Incompetent, subpar service. They botched a simple tri fold of a brochure. When agreement was reached with store manager to have them reprint my file due to their error, I thought they would make good on my project. When returning to give them my file on usb storage disk, I was told a new manger reversed the decision to make good on my loss. She had her employee refold my brochure leaving serious flaws and mis folds. When I argued that was not acceptable and got angry, she ordered me to leave store or she'd call police. I just had one of the best customer service experiences of my life at this Office Max. I ran in there, before closing in search of supplies for an event happening the next day....usually you have to wander around in these places like, "marco?, polo?" until you FINALLY find an employee - but no! Enter friendly Office Max gent....he totally went above and beyond to help me find exactly what I needed and made sure that I was good to go. He was also quite the comedian. Bah! Oh, office max guy. This Office Max is, well, what you'd expect - they have the stuff you need an Office Max for and the people roaming the aisles seem nice and relatively helpful. BUT WOE UNTO YOU if you need the printshop for anything. It's always a total mess, there's usually only one person back there and he is generally surly, impatient and somehow unable to do the simple thing you ask for. I finally reached my patience limit today and will go out of my way to avoid ever having to step foot in this place again. read more

This place needs to remodel the exterior and interior. It just looks gloomy. I saw no employee other than one cashier. I went there to buy a chair the cashier who seemed like an airhead was pushy about an extended warranty on the chair. I told her I dont need it and yet she kept going on about the extended warranty "It's only 5 dollars." The experience I had at this Office Max made me not want to come back ever. read more

Excellent customer service! What a wonder the staff are. I buy school supplies for a local afterschool program with a ton of kids, so I buy HELLA supplies. One time I went and bought all this glue. A woman was ringing me up, and the glue was supposed to be on sale, but it wasn't registering. I explained this, and the cashier set everything to the correct sale price - no questions asked! Just a few days ago, I had another absolutely fantastic customer service experience. I had lost a receipt (for the glue) and I needed to submit it for my expense report for work. Boy, lost receipts are the worst. I showed up, and a young man who was working said he could help me. He was about to go on break - and he stayed to help me instead! We searched up my purchases in the computer, and sure enough he was able to print an itemized receipt for me right there on the spot. It totally saved me! This guy went above and beyond. I was in the store to buy a quality office chair, a Webcam (fat chance anywhere these days, lol), 32" monitor and return a cheap keyboard I bought yesterday. They would not let me in the store to look at stock without a face mask (other Seattle Office Max/Depot have no restriction), which is their right to determine policy. Here's where the stupidity starts, they refused to give me a 5c mask from the giant box at the cash register to go spend $400+-, and would only sell me a $20 pack or refuse business. Again, their right, but what idiotic managerial practice. No wonder brick & mortar stores are failing! The clerk performing the return was polite and checked on the Webcam (out of stock everywhere except the Shoreline store where I bought one yesterday, getting my hopes up for another after testing first) but the manager stood in the way of business and will be out of a job soon along with all the other retail outlets sticking to outdated customer unfriendly practices. read more

Went in tonight and I'm about half way through the stress of back to school supplies when my young son says "I've really gotta go." I send him up front where he is immediately told, "no bathroom for customers" and when I follow up I'm told, "no exceptions," and "it's for your safety," and maybe I should take him to trader joe's. So, here's the deal, I get it, some people ask to use your bathroom and they leave a mess and needles behind. It's frustrating and gross and a lot of things. So what do you do? You do the most un-community thing possible, and tell a mom and her two kids to leave their cart and go on a search for a bathroom. Problem solved, I like supporting local businesses, but I'll just go ahead and shop Amazon for school supplies from here on out. There's always a bathroom handy at my house and I won't ever be stuck with a cart full of supplies and a poop panicked kid in your store again. read more

My last three print jobs had errors. Several weeks ago I placed an order and went to pick it up after promised completion. It was not there because it had been mailed from another location. I placed an order last week and It was not laminated as ordered. The copy center employee was not concerned at all and simply told me to come back the next day because he had to take laminator apart. He acted as if I was bothering him. I placed another order to pick up today. I got the email confirmation that it was ready. I came in to pick up the order and it was not laminated as requested. The employee told me how he misread the work order and asked me to wait. 15minutes later I asked how long... he told me at least another 15 minutes. So I ended up having to come back. I picked up the order and it had a smudge. Always double check their work and understand that staff does not care about your time..... read more

Ever since this store was bought out by Office Depot the quality of service from the Print Center has gone way down. Most of the people working there don't seem to know whats going on and they definitely don't put in that extra effort to provide good service (or any service really). Constantly dropping the ball. I had a great experience at the Ballard Office Max on Leary. I went in to speak to someone about printing business cards and letterhead for my consulting business.Marshall was my salesperson and he was outstanding. He spent almost 20 minutes with me explaining some of the complexities of the different inks, papers, and printing process. He really knew his products and the entire process from A to Z. He even gave me some artistic consultation on my color choices. My mother was with me and also had questions about creating her own greeting cards. He was patient with her as well and extremely knowledgeable. This kind of customer service is rare! read more

DO NOT ORDER PRINTS ONLINE AND EXPECT TO PICK THEM UP AT THE STORE THE NEXT DAY! It's a printing company, but they won't print your online order there! They print them in Kent and then they ship it to ballard! I went in expecting to pick up my prints (standard paper,black and white nothing special) and they said they wouldn't be in until later in the day. By the way no time or tracking info. Or any information at all that it was being shipped to the store and not printed at the one I picked them up at. So I e mailed/forwarded my attachments to there personal e mail and they printed my pages out there in about 2 minutes. But still made me pay for them. They said I had to call and cancell but they don't have the phone number to where it was being printed at!!! So I called 800 office max (BIG MISTAKE) I got transferred 3 times, hung up on, given a number that didn't work anymore and finally, FINALLY a lady was able to help me, but even then they have to call me back and confirm! The only person who was a huge help that actually solved it for me was this awesome lady in Des Moines at another office max who was able to get ahold of someone. The customer service here is OUTSTANDING. it's always been good -- someone usually greets you as you enter, any time I've had a questions or needed help, the response has always been truly helpful, friendly and courteous. They have a pretty full complement of office stuff, including electronics (computers, printers, tablets, cords, accessories...), all the binders and filing stuff you'd ever desire, pens, pencils, and other tools that you can use to label your whole world. The store is clean and, for anyone with mobility problems (walkers, wheelchairs, crutches, etc.), it's quite easy to navigate. They have some disabled parking spaces right up front, the curb is at the same level as the parking pavement, and the automatic doors have minimal thresholds. (So there's virtually no slope or bumps to deal with.) The space in the aisles is generally roomy, providing good space to maneuver a wheelchair. (There aren't a lot of displays that block access or create too-narrow places.) They have always offered to help take out any heavy or bulky stuff to my van for me, which I really appreciate. ( They offer to help out anyone that wants some help.) I have a Ramp-Van, and when I returned to my van after shopping today, someone had parked too close -- she parked into the striped-off 'no parking' area that is between 2 disabled spots. That meant there wasn't enough room for my ramp to open, so I couldn't get in to my van. I went back into the store and they made 2 announcements over the PA system. One employee started asking people throughout the store if they owned the blocking car. Eventually, a woman returned to her car and pulled away, which meant that I could now open up the ramp and get into my van. One of the OfficeMax workers stayed and waited with me as we waited for the woman to arrive and then move her car. He also stayed to make sure that no one pulled into the other spot while I had the ramp extended. The upshot of all of this: Not only is it a nicely run, well-stocked store, but it's really accessible for anyone with mobility problems. They're happy to carry stuff for you, to reach things, or help you in whatever way so that you can get your shopping done. They went the extra mile for me today. Shopping in a wheelchair can sometimes be really frustrating: hard to find parking, sometimes there are steps (so you can't get in at all), displays are set up all over the place, making the aisles narrow and hard to navigate, etc. etc. etc. But this store makes it easy, and the people really go the extra mile to be friendly and helpful. read more

i bought two laptops for my kids 3 years ago. then i was sold a 3 year extended warranty, which they said would start after the one warranty the laptops came with. That sealed the deal.Even if my two teenagers broke them in a questionable way. One needed to be fixed. My first visit to the store was a disappointment, a man clerk flat out told me the 3 years was up and that was it. I went home pissed. the next day i called the store and got a women on the phone who said that back then they did sell the warranties that started at the end of the one year company warranty. I called the warranty company and they said the warranty was expired . I again talked to a clerk, a woman she took the time to call the warranty company and check on the plan she got the no also, she said she would talk to the store manager Amy. When i talked to her she wanted to make this warranty work. She gave me a new computer !!! She made me her customer for life! i believe she went way beyond the pale of co policy to resolve my problems. i cant say enough about Amy's customer service policy. Whenever I have to go shop for office supplies, I normally just hop in the car and drive to the Ballard OfficeMax. Most of the employees are very helpful, if not a little too helpful. But the Leary Way OfficeMax in Seattle has lost my business forever after the horrible customer experience I had there today. I went there to buy a 4 gig SD card for my camera, but there were a lot of options to choose from (that's why I go to Office Max...). To be sure I bought the right card, I pulled up the specs for my camera on my phone's web browser. Then this guy starts circling me every couple of minutes to ask if I needed help. I was asked three or four times by the same employee in just 10 minutes. Each time I replied that I was fine figuring it out on my own. I even showed him the web page on my phone and explained that I was looking at the specs for my camera. He asked which model of camera I used and I told him. He looked at me blankly and walked off. So, after finally looking at the last of the cards, I realized that the same employee was standing right behind me, arms folded, watching me like a hawk. I asked him why he was standing so close and watching me and he said that he wondered why a person would be taking over an hour to look at anything if they were really going to buy it. I had actually been at the store no more than 15 minutes. I told him as much and said I didn't appreciate his insinuation. I also showed him the $400 cash in my wallet, along with my credit cards and such, "validating" me as a real customer. That's when it got ugly. He said he didn't care what I had in my wallet and that I was taking too long to find whatever I was looking for. I asked to speak to the manager and it turns out he is the manager! After delivering a few choice words and snapping a picture of his ugly mug, I left the store and called the OfficeMax customer service line to file a complaint. Now I'm left wondering, are the OfficeMax people only appearing to be helpful? Or do they just hover because they think of their customers as thieves? I will not be back until either that guy is fired or he apologizes personally. This place only gets one star until they make good on this. read more

Today I needed about 60 copies and asked them how much the were. I was quoted 9 cents and the only sign by the copier was 9cents white or colored paper. About 20 of the copies were double sided and they wanted to charge me double. I would have been ok with that if it was posted and the cashier decided to get a manager to make the call on only charging what their sign said. After waiting about 5 minutes (all this to save less than a dollar, but it was the point of the matter), he came and said "We'll we will put a sign up for YOU, but it costs 18 cents per copy!. I left and went to Staples at 8 cents a page with an explanation that it would cost more for double sided. I even made an error at Staples and they reduced my bill even though it was my fault. - Office Max OUT. Staples IN. read more

It feels like a dirty YMCA sauna....All US office max stores thermostats are controlled from a Chicago HQ. So when its 75 degrees outside in Seattle, office max inside is a scorching 88 degrees. Up until today my review would have been 4 stars. However, today this store lost me as a customer. I received an email letting me know that I had reward points that were going to expire, almost $20! Who doesn't love being rewarded for being a good customer? I picked out my items only to find out at the register that I had to print a coupon from my account to receive the credit. No big deal, I thought. A minor nuisance in the day of instant gratification apps. The next 20 minutes of my life were some of the most frustration minutes I have experienced. It is true, customer service is dead. One worker tried to help me logon to the website only to fail and have to call Cameron, the manager to help. With dumbfounded looks and shrugged shoulders I was told there was nothing they could do. The customer service phone line was closed until tomorrow and I was told that "the website just doesn't work very well sometimes. Come back tomorrow after you talk to customer service" I understand that sometimes our hands are tied in regard to corporate policies but at least try to PRETEND that you give a shit that I can't access my points and have just wasted precious time. Honestly, he could not have had less helpful affect during the entire exchange!! I left the store very frustrated and without all of my products that I had picked out. The store manager of another store was able to help me in minutes overe the phone and finally I was able to redeem my points. He understood the frustration and happily tried to help rather than acting like I was inconveniencing his work day by actually requiring him to WORK! read more

Office Max Ballard - We went for various purchases and had excellent customer service from Mara, no matter how many questions we asked, or what the product was. She cheerfully and quickly led us to exactly what we wanted. Gary also was extremely knowledgeable in answering our questions about computers, their features, pros and cons, etc. He was so thorough. We're not ready to purchase one yet but his customer service would definitely head us in that direction. My only reason for four stars is that I bought some Office Max 1/3 cut file tabs that all have black smudge marks (inside the package on the tabs). It must have been a manufacturing problem. In any case, I didn't notice it until I got home and was ready to use them. This should take nothing away from the superbe service from both Mara and Gary. It's just inconvenient to drive all the way across town to return or exchange them. read more
