This is the place to go for lobsters and clams in Ogunquit. The steamed lobsters have a taste that is a little sweeter and better than at any other restaurant we have ever been to. The clams are also wonderful. And the deep dish blueberry pie with either whipped cream or ice cream is the perfect dessert. I usually have a local beer with dinner. Best 2# hard shell lobster I've ever eaten. They have an active seawater pipe that feeds the lobster tank to keep them fresh and they boil them in sea water so after they make a bunch of them the water becomes stock. I steam lobsters at home in white wine garlic and whatever but these taste better! Great service to accompany the meal. Totally hokey and completely fun. When you're looking for a break from the upscale local restaurants and just want to have a utterly low key time, Lobster Pound is an entertaining place. Yes, everything everyone says is true, both good and bad. The decor is 40 years old and divey. The baked potatoes are small. The baked beans DID come out of a can (as the waitress acknowledged). The margarita had lots of salt and an undetectable amount of alcohol (and tasted good nevertheless). All that notwithstanding, the lobsters were great, the staff was friendly, a good time was had by all and I would go back in a heartbeat. read more

As has become our custom of dining in Ogunquit is to get to the QKP at least twice. We go because the service is always good and the it's close.. I think it's fair to say that one would expect a lobster to be less expensive than buying it at home at your local supermarket and not the same price per pound at a local hometown restaurant ($20/lb). The menus always say 'Market Price', but for the 15+ years we have been coming here, it is still one of the highest prices you'll pay for these seafood delights. Clearly, market price should be renamed 'Seasonal Price'. There is another place we frequent about 45 minutes north that a 1 1/2 pounder can be brought to you for $11.99 and the steamers are $8.99/lb. There is no ambiance or over lacquered tables, but the seafood is great. read more

Food is decent, If it was about $5 cheaper per meal I wouldn't regret it as much. The shrimp was overcooked, and the "seafood stuffing" tasted like store bought stuffing mix soaked in seafood bisque. The mashed potatoes were okay but tasted almost as if they had been reheated. I would not recommend getting baked beans, Bush's would have been better, theirs tasted like the cheap off the shelf discount beans. The bright light in the meal was the artichoke dip, very tasty. When we questioned the waitress on the deserts, she didn't even know what they offered. We settled for the blueberry pie. The pie was also decent, blueberry filling was good, the crust seemed very weak, I'm from the south so I'm use to southern comfort cooking that has a bunch of flavor. I didn't feel like any love went into their food, and the staff wasn't the most welcoming. We arrived an hour after they opened and ate for about an hour and felt like they where pushing us out the door so they could close. read more

I have just had the most disappointing lobster dinner I have ever had! The lobster was over cooked, the vegatable mellady was not hot, and the butter for the lobster arrived several minutes after the lobster was served. Our server never came by the table to ask if the meal was OK, did I want more butter, would I like another beverage, nothing! When paying for the over priced meal, I advised the staff that I was not happy and why. I also advised that there would be NO tip forthcoming. A loss of about $15.00 to the server. If I had left a tip, it would have been ten cents for a bill of over $80.00. I have never been so ignored at a restaurant in my life. There was also no offer to make it right! I had just enjoyed a lobster dinner in Cape Breton days before that put this restaurant to shame. Not only that, the bill was far less and in Canadian dollars. read more

Unfortunately the food here did not live up to my hopes. We are local which means we probably should have known to stay away. The bacon wrapped scallops were good, you get 5 in the app. The clam chowder tasted like it came out of any bag/can you find anywhere. My sister and I visited Ogunquit in early August and had dinner at a few different local area restaurants. The best lobster we had was here. My sister had the full steamed lobster and I had lobster tails- both were excellent. Our waitress, Taylor, was great- attentive but not hovering. I heard so much about the pound that I could not wait to eat there. Upon arriving it took us over 20 minutes to get a drink, another hour and a half for our food and it was just now what I expected. I expected it to be a good experience, they were a bit pricey $18.95 a pound. For three people we paid $90.00 for 3 lobsters. The sides were not great. Very disappointed, because we could have saved our money and ate elsewhere for cheaper. Needless to say, will never go there again. Lobster was rubbery. The kids that worked there were nice. This restaurant is not child friendly at all. My family and I had a horrible experience there tonight! Our 2 year old son who is on the Spectrum stays very content while eating out if he has one of just a few small toys to play with. His favorite is a toy that plays several songs quietly. We have eaten at the "Pound" many times over the years, and chose it tonight because it is usually loud and bustling with activity. Far from an upscale restaurant and already noisy, we thought it would be the perfect place. Our son ate his dinner quietly while softly playing with his toy. A snotty waitress came over to us and told us to turn off the toy, leaving us no choice but to leave without having our meal. My boyfriend and I came here on a weekend trip to Maine. We stayed at a condo right next to the Lobster farm and walked there one day for dinner. It is a casual atmosphere with a lot of tables. There is a tank where you can see the lobsters and get to see yours taken out of the tank when you go to order the size you want. I got a 1 1/2 pound lobster and my boyfriend got the 1 3/4 lobster. We also ordered 2 appetizers: The bacon wrapped scallops and 1/2 order of clams. Both were amazing and the scallops came with maple syrup and a delicious mustard. The lobster was cooked perfectly. It was so soft! The reasons I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 was for the sides and the cost. The sides you can get with your Lobster are pretty weak in my opinion. I ordered steamed vegetables and it was just baby carrots. Also, for 2 of us, the meal was $100. I thought the lobster was pricey for being in such high supply. But, then again, it is Ogunquit. This restaurant has the potential to be great. The lobsters and clams were so fresh you pick them from the tank yourself. We were drawn in by the steam and the giant lobster tank. You can never go wrong with fresh. And here is the problem. The side dishes were frozen food and from cans. It's Maine. It's corn season. How is corn not the vegetable of the day every day? Why are we eating Bush's baked beans, frozen fries and bagged carrots? I don't make that at home, why would I want to pay a restaurant to heat that up for me instead of truly cook? The service here was good, I like the idea of picking your own lobster, but this place needs an executive chef who insists on only serving fresh ingredients. Just because a place is kid-friendly or family-friendly doesn't mean it should sacrifice quality. It's not that much more expensive to cook fresh rice, coleslaw, fries or beans, especially with all of the farms around here. It was very busy the night we went for dinner. We were seated relatively quickly-a party of seven. It was very lively almost impossible to hear one another, so if you like it quiet, on a busy night this is not the place. Our server was very slow, but once our food was ordered it didn't take long. Our lobster rolls were good, a lot of meat, just slightly over cooked. The bacon wrapped scallops were great, we loved the mustard dill dipping sauce and the mussels were delicious. Overall the quality of food was very good. The restaurant is very clean and outdoor area with the live lobsters and chairs is nice. My only real complaint was our server, whom we waited 10 minutes to order our drinks, had to ask for bread twice, and never came back to ask us how our meals were or if we wanted more drinks. We had to get her attention every time as she was going by us, and yes it was busy, but she definitely wasn't hustling either. read more

I was a little nervous about choosing the Ogunquit Lobster Pound after reading the recent reviews, but my husband and I decided to take a chance anyway as we wanted to have Lobster on our last night of vacation. I'm glad we didn't take the other recent reviews too seriously. This restaurant was everything we expected. True it was a Thursday night, not in peak season (Sept 13) and fairly early just before 6pm, but we didn't have to wait for a table and our server (Whitney) was terrific. She was very helpful in explaining the lobster ordering process and we went out to pick out our lobster. I got a 2lb and my husband got a 2 1/4 lb. Both were cooked to perfection and very tasty. Anyone who expects lobsters to be cheap in a tourist area like Ogunquit even with wholesale prices the lowest in years at about $4 a lb is kidding themselves. If you use that as a reason to give this restaurant a low rating then you shouldn't have gone here in the first place. I had baked beans and coleslaw as my sides and found both tasty. I didn't eat much of either though because my focus was on the lobster. I do like the fact that they crack the shells partially for you so you don't have to fight to get to the lobster. I am not lobster novice so don't really need the help, but appreciate not having to fight to get at my dinner. This is especially important with hard shell lobsters as we found out a few nights before when we battled our lobsters at the Cape Neddick lobster pound. If you want a fun experience and a comfortable atmosphere then this may be your ticket. If you want a cheap lobster dinner then go find a lobster pound in one of the remote harbor locations in the area. read more

My fiance and I had a meal here during our week long vacation in Ogunquit. We heard good things so had high expectations. We started out with the artichoke dip which was awesome. It was cheesy and creamy. Then our entrees came and I was quite disappointed. I got the seafood stuffed sole. I think the sole itself would have been fine, but the seafood "stuffing" was more like like seafood mush. I couldn't even identify what was in it, and the taste was just a bland seafood taste. For sides I had mashed potatoes and Cole slaw. The cole slaw tasted like it came from the grocery store. The mashed potatoes actually looked homemade but had no flavor. Dessert: Amazing. We split a blueberry pie alamode. There were so many blueberries that it overflowed the ramekin. It was big enough to split but we still fought over it!! Unfortunately I don't think we would come back again. If we did, it would only be for appetizer and dessert. I gave it two stars because while the appetizer and dessert were delicious I expect a seafood restaurant to have palatable and identifiable seafood. read more

The wife and I just got back from having lunch here...not impressed! The girl who took our order at the take out window was sweating profusely...literally dripping onto the order form she was filling out. I got the fried scallop dinner and the wife got the haddock. As I was signing the credit card slip, one of the other girls inside the "Take Out" booth started complaining that she hadn't received any tips and it seems like no one leaves tips on Sunday. It was loud enough to take my attention away from what I was doing...and I believe that was her intent. I wasn't planning to leave a tip anyway...there is no server that greets you, seats you, waits on you or cleans up after you. Not quite sure why a customer would be expected to tip under these circumstances...but I certainly wasn't going to leave a tip after I heard that. Anyway...our number was called (I went to the window to get the food) and when I said thank you to the girl at the pick up window, she just glared at me and didn't say anything. We're easy going people...we don't expect 5-star service but a simple smile and you're welcome would do. When all was said and done, we spent $38+ for the two dinners and they were average at best. My advice to the owners...teach the kids who wait on your customers to be polite. It's actually rude to discuss tipping in front of a customer while they're signing a credit slip. I'm not quite sure how you teach someone to excuse themselves to wipe the sweat off their face...seems like an obvious thing to do when your sweat is dripping on the customer's order form. And for God's sake...teach them to smile and say thank you! They're lucky they even have a job! If their compensation is based (in part) on tips, you should have them actually wait on the customer instead of standing around sweating, complaining and not practicing the golden rule. read more

My family and I have vacationed in Ogunquit for MANY years. I have wanted to try the Lobster Pound, but or whatever reason I was overruled, . Finally went last night. Simple review--Had to wait a while, very busy--but understandable for probably the busiest week-end of the year (Labor Day). Perhaps the best tasting lobster I have ever had at a restaurant (and have had a few). The sides, salads, are all passable for any such type restaurant. Delicious chowder. My wife had another fish dish-delicious, too, but let's get back to why you really go there--the lobsters. You pick your own from their huge lobster tank (can select hard or soft--ALWAYS go hard!). They cook and cut them for you for easy eating and again--just a great tasting lobster. Even after all of the diddling for the other things (yummy bread, too) the lobsters stayed hot. If I could have eaten the shells, I probably would have tried. Also the pace of the place is ALWAYS moving, but they seem to have the operation down to a science. All of the little details, drinks, additions, etc, even the kid's stuff came and went like clockwork and smoothly (once we sat down). They have a pretty good menu overall, too, but we did not stay for dessert, though I hear their individual blueberry pies are yummy. Compared to other lobster restaurants we have tried in the Ogunquit area--if you are focused on the lobsters, I will now definitely come back. As I said--ever better then most other places I have had. Lobsters deserve a six star rating--I consider a four star for the whole restaurant is a very good rating in comparison to all we have tried.
