Had the pleasure of hanging out and catching up on work from this coffee/surf shop on a recent trip to Ocean Isle. Delicious coffee drinks, smoothies and muffins, with a few alternative milk options. The island muffin with banana, pineapple and toasted coconut was the best. Eat it warmed! Team was friendly and lots of cool beach merch and apparel. WiFi and several outlets at the co-working bar made it easy to get some work done while enjoying the coastal vibes and tunes. Cozy sitting area for just relaxing too. Five star! Will be back next time I'm in the area for sure! read more

Went in to pick up an afternoon coffee while we were in the area. It's part coffee shop and part surf shop. Very cute! The clothes are a little pricey in my opinion but the coffee is good. They also have frappes and smoothies. There's an outdoor patio where you can work or bring your dog to sit. Located in a strip mall so there is tons of parking. read more

First time at Surf & Java, which we found simply by Googling "coffee shop OIB." I had the Black & Tan (iced) and wife had "Almond Joy" (latte). Both were outstanding!! No other way to describe it. The shop itself is also exceptional with soft seating, a table or two, plus a wide variety of surf related clothing. Surfboards too, of course. The staff is also outstanding. Very friendly. We'll be back soon for sure. read more

Phenomenal spot to have a morning brew and chill next to some really fun surf merch. Ambiance is relaxed and there are plenty of places to sit. There's a bar with power ports. Nice little patio for the doggos. The coffee is good and staff seemed friendly and was efficient. read more

Came to OIB Surf & Java a few days ago for a banana chocolate muffin and monkey bread. They notoriously run out of their baked goods very quickly and it seems like they stop making them past 10am if they run out. So it was no surprise to not see any monkey bread sitting out when I got there. Is it that difficult to just keep making your baked goods throughout the day? Anyways, there were still banana chocolate muffins, so I waited in line with 3 people ahead of me. The person at the front of the line and the cashier were having a full blown catch up conversation, talking about hanging out and texting one another. The customer was purchasing gift cards and the cashier took ages to find gift cards, write the amount, find gift card sleeves, etc. After 10 minutes of waiting and the line not moving at all, I just left. Went to Drift instead where the service is MUCH quicker and the quality of the food and drinks is way beyond OIB Surf & Java. All I wanted was those muffins because that's the only thing worth it at Surf & Java. Ninety percent of the time that I've gone to Surf & Java over the past few years, I can't get those muffins because they're already sold out and not making more or the service is so terribly slow. The chai is disgusting also. Mainly just milk with a splash of really gross chai concentrate from a box. read more

Nice location really nice people cool vibe the coffee a little bit off. We got the s'mores latte and cinnamon dolce latte. Both with extra shots the balance of the drinks were both off. They needed an extra shot of flavoring and or a little bit more sweetener. I don't like my coffee, sweet, but this was extremely out of balance bitter. Somebody grabbed my girlfriends double shot when there was a single shot and because they don't call the orders by name you didn't know it until you realize that happened but we told her store staff they said OK and simply forward an additional shot on the very top of the drink Which sat on top of the foam it made the bitterness even worse. Maybe just a bad experience. The vibe of the shop was great a surfer shop with a coffee shop in it as well. The people were very friendly and a drink came out fast, especially considering how busy of us that it was that said I would wish they would've taken an extra five seconds. What a great mix-use surf and coffee shop. Excellent soft seating for sipping and reading (surfing mags and books aplenty) and tabletops for working too. But maybe most fun is the retail - true surf shop vibes with some OIB (Ocean Isle Beach) merch mixed in! Coffee and atmosphere were ten outta ten (10/10)! read more

Best coffee place I've ever been to. We go every year when we vacation. Come back home with bags of coffee. "Carolina morning" is our favorite one. I love their iced white chocolate mochas and chocolate mochas the best. Everyone that works there is super sweet and friendly. read more

Without a doubt, the best coffee shop in the OIB area. Beats the pants off of Drift on OIB Island. You have to drive off island but it is worth it. Once you step inside, you feel you are on island time. It is clean, the staff is courteous, and the seating area is comfy, plentiful, and for patrons (not roped off for staff only!) with a fully equipped surf shop attached. There is outside seating also. Coffee is rich and made consistently. They have a good variety of offerings to satisfy everyone. They have drip coffee, lattes, frappes, espresso, fruit Smoothies, teas, and great noshes to nibble. The surf shop has authentic island/surf wear like Roxie, Billabong, etc and it ranges from the high end to the higher end. The sizing (some brands offer XXL) and quality are there so I don't mind paying for it. If you need a nice dress or menswear shirt, here is your place. They also have a selection for kids but most of the clothing is for boho surfer girls and guys. Pick up a ukelele for crooning on the beach at sunset. read more

Coffee: 3.5 stars Service: 5 stars Shop: 5 stars Having worked in coffee (and admittedly picky), I appreciate the effective bar flow OIB Surf and Java has established. They're fast, courteous, and communicative. The coffee was standard. I ordered a double espresso and cold brew (I always order an espresso shot in every shop I visit to understand their primary product). The espresso shot was burnt and earthy; resembling a simplified Hawaiian Kona profile. Maybe this is what they're going for given the setting? The cold brew was more enjoyable. Still a dominantly earthy coffee flavor but with minimal hint of fruit notes. I prefer my coffee fruity (Ethiopian, red bourbon varieties, etc) so this wasn't my wheelhouse, but this fits perfectly for the location. If you want to avoid long lines at Drift, spend the five extra minutes to come over the bridge (given it's not jammed). read more

Great overall experience! My coworker went to one in wrightsville and loved it and told me to check out the one in calabash! I had never been to one before. I'm not much of a coffee drinker but I have worked for many surf brands in my life, Hurley, quiksilver, Oneill, to name a few. My wife is a coffee fiend so we came here to scratch the itch. There's a surf shop in the coffee shop! It's literally the best of both worlds ! My wife had a frap and loved it ! The barista dudette recommended a smoothie so I did the island colada. Located at the end of a Lowe's foods shopping complex, there is plenty of parking. Several spots are right in front of the doors. We walked in the right door, which is the surf shop side, but it's all open inside so which door you enter doesn't matter. There are only a few seats, but several more outside. The menu is to the left on the wall by the counter and offers a lot of choices. The barista was cheerful and helpful. The toasted marshmallow was very good. The flavorings they use are high quality as there was no hint of burnt in the flavor. Their regular coffee was also very good, with a light roast and low bitterness. The espresso also was good. It only took about five minutes to get our drinks. We walked through the surf shop while waiting. They have some cool items including kids sizes. Is a good choice for quality coffee drinks, and interesting beach/ surf items. read more

My family and I have been going here since they first opened. We've always loved it. My husband and I are huge coffee fans, this place is our all time favorite. The atmosphere is very chill, the staff is always so sweet. I absolutely love their drinks but my absolute favorite is the green tea frappe. I have to get it whenever I'm in town. They drizzle the inside of the cup with honey, it's perfect! I love all the little shop inside too. The ulu lagoon air fresheners and candles smell amazing. The owner puts his Chesapeake bay retriever on merch so I just love it even more :) I cannot praise this place enough. read more

I have to admit I didn't try any coffee drinks at OIB because I don't drink coffee, but I know if I did drink coffee, I would like this place. The vibe was really nice and they had a surf shop attached to the coffee shop with cool clothes. I got a white bathing suit that I just love the material. Women's white bathing suits are usually see through once they get wet, but this suit does not get see through and it's such a unique material and style. So I guess I am doing more a review of the fun clothes at this coffee shop but the vibe is very worth checking out. read more

I've only gone through the drive through but this place is awesome. The staff is super friendly, prices are fair, the line is quick, and the coffee is really good. I've gotten mostly white chocolate mochas iced but I've also had their cold brew and regular espresso. One morning someone already paid for my coffee.
