The noodles and meat were perfectly seasoned, not too salty nor buttery and the veggies were crunchy and fresh. The serving size is plentiful, so I had leftovers for days. My son who has dairy and tree nut allergy had his shrimp and steak prepared in the kitchen. He ate up his food and had no reaction. I find hibachi places too salty or too buttery sometimes, but food was great. The restaurant is a bit dated but I assume it's been around for a while. read more

FINALLY!!!!! I was able to find a Japanese chef from Japan in STL! Yes, I know about Nobu, and plan to visit that spot really soon but sometimes you don't want to have to make reservations and spend over a hundred dollars on a three course sushi meal. Sometimes, you just want to walk into a place, sit at the sushi bar, speak Japanese, drink sake, watch an NFL game, and order "real sushi" that's off menu! And you know what?! This is the place where you can do all of that, because I did! It was so nice to be able to speak to Chef Yoshi in Japanese and order a few traditional Japanese dishes off menu! I order negitoro every time, it's my favorite, and off menu! I've tried to order negitoro in STL so many times at so many sushi places, but they can never accommodate because they don't know what it is. By the way, in addition to his sushi, the way Chef Yoshi personally grills fish is perfection! It tasted like home! I was extremely happy! The only reason why I'm not rating this place a five star in STL is because not all of the Japanese dishes have that authentic "washoku" taste. But the sushi is definitely a home run! read more

We had dinner at Oishi. I recommend it. I frown on relativistic reviews. For one thing, I disagree, as a progressive, with the notion that everything is relativistic. Some things are universal, such as not discriminating in an invidious manner on the basis of immutable characteristics. For another thing, the remark this establishment is good for this time and this place is insufferably condescending on the part of the writer. It suggests there is something superior which that person is privy to but others are ignorant of. So I don't want to say this is superlative for a St. Louis suburb. I will say, instead, this is high quality and worthwhile and an excellent deal. Our party of three had tempura, yosenabe, and chirashi. The tempura could have been more lightly breaded, but that is a quibble. American tastes run toward heavier batter. The main courses featured fresh ingredients. They were prepared competently. Did they have ikura and uni and amaebi? No. Did they exceed expectations? Yes. The prices are excellent. The airy space also is, in absolute square foot per diner measurements, greater than on either coast -- that is not a relative comparison. Service was easygoing and friendly. The other diners all seemed to feel comfortable without displaying pretension. Across the street was a pasta house where we dined before my nephew and I ran a marathon as well as a local breakfast chain we've enjoyed more than once. That makes this place an excellent find. It's great to be able to dine out without, in the colloquial, breaking the bank. It is all the better to support a small business that is performing at the top of the game. read more

The seaweed salad was the same way, just over the top. The red curry soup with shrimp was something mom would have cooked.
