This place is a small burger spot by the circle of Orange. I initially thought I would prefer the Ojai Wagyu burger, but I ended up liking the Ojai chicken sandwich much better. The Ojai Wagyu burger isn't bad, it's just not my preference. It has a sweet sauce and I prefer savory. However, the Ojai chicken sandwich is crispy, tender, and has an amazing, somewhat spicy taste. It's great to see that the circle is getting more and more diverse with all these great food spots opening up! Hands down, best chicken sandwich I've ever had. (5/5) **Spicy Miso Burger: I didn't have this myself but I trust my girlfriend's judgement because we have the same taste buds. This was the first time she finished a burger before me and that alone was impressive. The fried egg on top was the icing on top. (5/5) **Wagyu Fries: The wagyu beef was amazing and perfectly cooked but there just wasn't enough meat on top. However, very delicious. (4/5) The service here is awesome. Everyone was so friendly and patient as we were looking up at the menu for several minutes in the beginning. Place is super clean and even though it's a small interior area, there's plenty of seats available. On the bright side, they share outdoor seating with the Wahoo's right next door. Yum-my! Swung by recently to try out these wagyu burgers and they did not disappoint. Flavors worked well with the tenderness and juiciness of the burger patties, and who doesn't love grilled onions and mushrooms or even some avocado and kewpie mayo?! The karaage fries were also really tasty - perfectly fried so you get a nice crunch yet still have some potato fluffiness inside. Wrapped up this meal by sharing an ube mochi waffle with friends because who can say no to mochi?? I did wish the waffle was a little more mochi like in consistency and texture, but the flavor was good. I hovered between 3 and 4 stars for Ojai Burger, but ultimately went with 3. Saw the feature on Eater LA and came on a Friday night to try it out. I got the spicy chicken sandwich and hubby the Ojai burger. It's an order at the counter setup, you get a number, find a table and your food is brought out to you when ready. Food came out fairly quick, but my sandwich wasn't very warm and the sauce (which is miso based) was def on the saltier side. Hubby said his burger was fine, nothing too special. Portions are on the smaller side and pricier side (think Umami Burger). Service is friendly, you bus your tables after and the outside patio is shared with Wahoos, so you can grab a beer with your meal if you want. Buttermilk Fried Chicken eventually soured and flew away. The coop was empty for some time until Ojai said "Hi". Fresh paint, a fresh spin and Ojai was in. There is cashless counter service with a few high tops inside and on the adjoining patio. Your choice is a Burger, a Fried Chicken Sandwich or Wahoo Tacos next door. Oh, and there are 8 different ways to make a mess of the humble French Fry. These are nothing more than a routine Poutine. If you're going here for McDonald's like Fries, go to any McDonalds instead. My Okonomi Fries arrived mushy, gooey, gluey, sticky, messy and as limp as an E. D. Ad. Perfect if you've had all your teeth extracted. Gum away as even your neighbor's cat would step over these. They were squirted with Okonomi Sauce (ersatz Teriyaki and just as cloying), Kewpie Mayo with a fast and furious shake of Furikake and Bonito Flakes, elevating a hint of Unami to a fork full of fish guts. Did I make these sound attractive enough for you? O. B. is well intentioned but needs to rethink the Fry recipes. Ah, but you came for the Burger. The heavily touted Burger and there are 5 to choose from. The Topa Topa Burger was a Wagyu Beef Patty, but hold on there Tomodachi, we'll revisit this shortly. The meat has a healthy (?) squeeze of Topa Topa which I thought were Maori Warrior undies. Don't bother asking how I know what they taste like. The Sauce was a syrupy wannabe Teriyaki. There is an unspiced Avocado fan. Add to that a scant demitasse spoon of Kewpie Mayo, mixed with shredded Cabbage that brings little to the party save for G. I. regularity. Then there is a tangle of Fried Onion Strings in homage to Hackney's of Chicago. The Onion Strings were crispy and should've been offered on the side before the steam from the meat wilted the crunch. The top half of the Brioche Bun was naked, a blank canvas. Your choice of Yellow Mustard. Tear open the packet that refused to yield and watch it ejaculate all over your date's Sweat Shirt or enjoy a similar fate wrenching open the Ketchup packet which ends up with you looking like you spent an afternoon with OJ. Maybe lay out some interesting condiments in pump jars. The Buns were good. They were, but if just go for the Buns take a Spin Class instead. Wagyu Beef is a Kobe cousin and here it was cooked to death. Wagyu should be fatty and glistening when served. The Patty was as dry as the Bun. Fat is flavor and there wasn't much of either. The Patty was merely along for the ride to keep the Bun and Onion Strings company. There was a pay off, though. The free Pickle Spear. It was Pickle perfection and the best I've had in memory. It would be at home in any pickle barrel on Ludlow St. in NYC. I suggest you ask for your free Pickle and then grill a burger at home. The Ube Shake the wash down the sandwiches was just slightly thinned out mashed Purple Potatoes with a fat straw. You'll need water, lot's of it. Having beaten the Burger to a pulp, let's move on the Fried Chicken Sandwich. After two bites I was ready to move on quickly to anything else anywhere else. There are 6 styles of Karaage (Japanese Fried Chicken) if the specter of the Burger choices leaves you as cold as your Fries. I ordered a Spicy Ojai Chicken Sandwich which comes topped with Kewpie Mayo, Ojai Spicy Sauce which is interchangeable with Topa Topa Sauce. There is a mystery House Spice Blend which the charming happy Hostee had no idea what the blend contained and finally there was that ubiquitous pile of Shredded Cabbage. Sound familiar? The Chicken Thigh was as big as a size 13 Nike Kyrie and the batter coating was as tough as an old boxing glove. This required a Leatherman Multi-tool to rip it away from the dry chicken lurking inside. I couldn't and wouldn't finish it. But...it does come with a free pickle. I boxed up the other half (without the pickle) and laid it gently on the blanket of a homeless dude sawing logs on the grass in front of the City Council Bldg. Both of us are probably not sure if I did him a favor. All things considered, for my $50, both sandwiches were flirting with being dreadful. Visiting from out of town and was looking for a new burger place during my stay in Anaheim. I do visit a few times a year and I've tried quite a few in and out of the area. I have to say that Ojai is one of the best in the area. The burgers with their fusion ingredients, including Teriyaki, are out of this world. In speaking with the staff, I learned that the beef is sourced from Snake River Farms. That's a huge plus from me as I often buy their meat products in my home state. The burger/bun ratio is spot on, and the brioche holds up so well. I love the min-shreds of lettuce, and the cooked egg on top of the OG burger from Ojai, was just perfect, with the yolk spilling over when I pressed the top bun on. The fries are the shoestring type I prefer, crispy on the outside and soft in the middle...and nice and hot, fresh out of the fryer. They have a selection of sauces to choose from and the staff was kind enough to let me try all of them. I was also given some tasters of the local beers they have on tap. Staff was amazing, willing to make this out-of-towner super happy. I will be back to try more of the menu, which looks to be a well-thought out smorgasboard of umami greatness. This place is located in the Orange Circle area. There is a large free parking garage a block away on Lemon Street or, if you're lucky, there's street parking. I came here for an early lunch on a weekday. I think I was their first customer of the day as there was no one there when I arrived but by the time I left it was filling up. The interior has a window counter plus a small number of tables but there is a nice patio area that Ojai shares with their neighbor, Wahoos. I chose the Ojai Wagyu Burger, Shake-Shake Fries (with garlic parmesan seasoning), and a chocolate milkshake. Their thing is to put a Japanese spin on the food (burgers and chicken sandwiches). You order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. My fries came out within a couple minutes while the milkshake took about five minutes and the burger five minutes after that. The fries were done perfectly - no complaints - but didn't seem particularly inspired. The basket full of fries was enough for two people to eat; I gave it the college try but came up short. The milkshake was exceptional, the quintessential shake. Very thick and chocolatey with a couple of Pocky stuck into it, it is one of the best you'll find anywhere. The burger...WOW. The beef patty was thick yet so soft and tender. The flavor of the juicy beef was never lost amongst the other ingredients layered on top of it: shredded cabbage, mayonnaise (Kewpie mayo from Japan...yes, it does taste different), a "secret sauce", and a fried egg. The egg, of course, makes it all rather messy but so delicious. The tasty brioche bun was not huge but held on and somehow kept from disintegrating until my last bite. This was a winner of a burger. This place serves Wagyu burgers and chicken sandwiches with Japanese flavors. Burgers were excellent. They were thick, juicy, and packed with flavor, while still tasting pretty clean for a burger. No weird aftertaste or excessive oil. All burgers and sandwiches have Kewpie mayo and shredded cabbage, and are served on a soft brioche bun. Some have avocado and sunny side up egg, depending on what you order. Can't go wrong with the original Ojai Wagyu Burger, but I love the Spicy Miso Burger. The sauce has a mild kick and greater depth in flavor. Wagyu patty was excellent on both. Looked like they were fully cooked but were still juicy. Texture was similar to a meatloaf. Topa Topa Chicken Sandwich was massive. The karaage chicken was almost twice the size of the bun. This was also packed with flavor, although I still can't determine what Topa Topa sauce is. It comes with avocado slices, fried crispy onions, Kewpie mayo, and shredded lettuce. Only recommendation I would make is to add something acidic, like pickles to burgers and sandwiches. I think that's the only element I was missing in these. It's located right by Orange Circle so parking can be a hassle. Just expect to walk a bit no matter where you park. It's located next to Snooze A.M. Eatery so there's always some crowd gathered around this area. I ordered online to avoid any potential long lines and wait. Delicious! The meat was so juicy and flavorful, the sauce adds a lot but doesn't overwhelm the burger, and the egg was done perfectly. We also liked the choice of buns. I got the spicy miso while my partner got the Ojai wagyu and I loved both. Way better than Umami Burger. The mochi waffles were really good too. Nice dense and cakey texture. We tried both ube and matcha (not pictured) and both were yummy. The matcha is a legit bitter matcha flavor, which I like, but others might not. The owner told us we can also mix and match the mochi waffles and drizzles. My only complaint here is that it tastes like they used the Butterfly brand ube flavoring for the drizzle (possibly also the waffle?), which has a bitter and artificial aftertaste that is very noticeable in the drizzle. But next time I might just order the ube waffle with a different syrup. Parking is street parking but there's also a public parking lot in the area, not sure if it's free though. I've seen Ojai Burger before when scouting out restaurants in the Ventura area but I didn't have the opportunity to try it. My wife saw that they opened a location in Orange and we happened to be in the area, so we wanted to give it a try. The store is located near old town and had street parking only. The store itself had about 4 tables inside, 2 of which seated 8, 1 seating 4, 1 seating 2 and 6 tables outside in the patio, with 2 seats each. They have 1 public bathroom. The door was kept wide open and it was 99 degrees outside, so it was fairly warm inside. There were also flies everywhere flying around the table, plus a few annoying mosquitos. The workers were friendly but the food took a while to come out. When it did come out, the presentation was acceptable. The fried chicken sandwich was crispy delicious thigh meat battered with tempura. It was placed on a lightly toasted bun with cabbage and had a "spicy sauce" (not) on it. I give them points for uniqueness. The spicy miso burger had an decent tasting miso sauce, which was not spicy at all. The patty was cooked well done without any kind of sear on it and it had barely any beef flavor. The tiny patty was topped with a slightly overcooked sunny side up egg and was placed on a bed of cabbage. The bun was barely toasted. The burger was ok overall but could use some more flavor and textures. My wife did enjoy the pickle though. Found this little unique burger spot while shopping at the Historic Orange District. We were happy that they had outside seating since we had our pup with us, and yes, the patio is dog friendly. Which is a huge bonus for us. First, we learned quickly that the servings are generous and we definitely ordered too much food. One order of fries can definitely be shared amongst s table. That being said, we ordered the spicy chicken sandwich, chicken katsu salad, Ojai burger, and fries. Food: Delicious fusion Japanese burger with many options. My husband went for the double-menchi katsu (deep-fried minced beef patties, shreddedncabbage) and that was super delicious. I also love mine which was Ojai burger (sun-side up egg with meat patty and shredded cabbage). The meat was tender and moist. The egg is a total cherry on top. YUMMM! Kid's burger (basic cheese & beef burger and a side of fries) lacks luster though as the meat seems to be less quality, dried, and a bit burnt. They do take 10 mins more or less to arrive and they are nice, fresh and hot. Place: very cold as if the AC is set to 68F, Clean, small. There are: 1 regular height table booth seating inside, 1 window bar seating space and 2 long high tables that seat 6 each. There are some more seating outdoor but not a whole lot. The restroom was broken that day so the staff asked us to use their competitors' restrooms instead (__;) Parking: we got lucky that we found a spot right in front but other than that, patrons probably have to drive around to look for a parking spot. This place is right at the circle so lots of traffic. Service: not much to note here as they take orders at counter, bring the food and that's it. Ojai is a new burger shop in Old Towne Orange and wow is it amazing! They have phenomenal burgers and shakes. I've gone twice since their soft opening and I've been impressed every single time I've gone! Their unique take on burgers with Asian flavors and wagyu beef help escalate their food to the next level! The menu has a good amount of variety to choose from and they also will carry alcohol in the future. The prices are reflective of the quality of the food that you get here and you are getting your money's worth when you drop by. I got the Spicy Miso Burger and the Ojai Wagyu Burger and both were delicious. The eggs were cooked perfectly and as soon as you bite in, you get the runny yolk and with the delicious wagyu beef patties, you get an explosion of umami! The buns are nicely toasted and I love that they use ingredients like kewpie mayo and shredded cabbage which help combat the richness of the meat. These are some of the best burgers that I've ever had! I've ordered the Spicy Miso fries as well and I loved how generous they are with the toppings and portions! Crispy fries topped with their special sauce and spice blends make for a great side to your burger. I would for sure order these again! The ube milkshake is also one of the best milkshakes I've had. You get a good balance of ube flavor mixed with Thrifty ice cream for the base from when I saw them making it. Oh man I loved everything here on the menu! I highly recommend any of the shakes - I got the Ube and I'm just craving it by thinking about it! We thought some of the burgers were a little dry so maybe some more sauce would do it justice. All of our food did take about 10 min which wasn't terrible. I have the mushroom one and is was very good , we also had the ojai burger with the fried egg and that too was good. Service was great, the front counter guy was friendly and attentive to our order, and have good suggestions. The place inside is kind of small, but there is a lot of seating outside as well. Price point for me is a little high, especially for the size of the burger and if you want to go double , you can but be prepared to pay over 20 bucks. Although burgers made with Wagyu beef are the main feature, of all the items I've tried that has to be the weakest offering Ojai has. Don't get me wrong, it offered a unique experience that is worth trying for many. Personally, the patty felt a bit too sweet for my preference regardless of what accompanied the burger. I think the main draw actually comes from the chicken dishes, especially in the Karage fries. Few places can have fried chicken that tastes too dry, or goes overboard and leaves a mouthful of oil in your mouth afterwards. If you're still curious what the burgers taste like, my recommendation is to go splitsies with somebody and order a chicken burger as well.
