Settle in. This is a long one. But it's important for anyone thinking of hiring OK to read.
My neighbor hired this company to replace her AC system. The very same day they came out to do the work, my unit's AC went down. Here's what happened.
-Prior to disconnecting the condenser on the roof of the building, their tech was required to verify that it was the correct one. They failed to do so and cut into MY condenser instead. This is undisputed by the vendor.
-They cut into it, replaced the piping, unplugged the internal plug, then drained the freon.
-Once they cut into it, they contaminated the unit and effectively destroyed my condenser.
-When they drained/stole the freon, they committed a federal crime. They are required to replace this to the pound by federal law. This is extremely expense and would cost at least $1000 to replace alone.
-Without the freon, the unit burnt out as it ran without fluid in it.
-There's also the assumption that once they realized their mistake, they actually put my original condenser back together. But I have no proof that that's the case. They could have taken it for parts and replaced mine with my neighbor's broken one. This is a very real possibility and would explain why it's not working. In that case, there's a very real case of possible theft here that I have been advised to pursue with the police.
-Either way, they cut into my fully functioning condenser, replaced the piping, unplugged the unit, drained the freon, reattached a condenser (not necessarily mine) that is no longer in working order. And then they just left. Without saying a word. And just hoped I wouldn't notice? And Joe, the president, is suggesting he is only on the hook for the compressor within the condenser.
He is actually required to replace the entire AC system, coil and condenser to original condition/working order, which included a matching coil and condenser. (Or the financial equivalent as reimbursement). He refuses to do so.
Any HVAC expert, including the two i've consulted, will tell you that having mismatched parts will result a system that can easily break down.
Premature failure-- According to the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute, "At worst, improperly matched indoor and outdoor units can create undue stress on your cooling system, resulting in an unnecessary, premature failure."
Lowered efficiency of new unit-- Assume you replace the outside unit with a 16 SEER unit and the inside unit is an old 8 SEER unit. Your new outside unit won't run as efficiently as advertised because of the old inside unit. It'd be like tying a stallion to a donkey.
Possibility of no warranty-- Since mismatched systems cause problems, some manufacturers won't offer a warranty for the new condenser unit if you don't also replace the evaporator unit.
It is also not akin to what I had, which is what he is required to return me to. Evaporator coil and condenser unit must match. And furnace coil should match as well, frankly. All of this should be provided by him or be paid for by him to another vendor. Frankly, I don't trust him at this point to install a functional system or be in my home. He has ignored countless texts and requests for updates and information over the last several days and even hung up on me when I was finally able to reach him. Unprofessional at best.
I'm also out over $400 having HVAC and electrical service vendors out to my home trying to figure out what happened. He has not offered to reimburse me for those costs.
Instead of apologizing for the now three weeks in 90+ degree/high humidity weather with no AC, with an elderly dog with a heart condition who has been struggling with her health the last few weeks in the heat, Joe refuses to do what he is legally required to do--which also happens to be the right thing. Replace the AC unit, coil and condenser, new, matching. Like any reputable service provider who messed up would do.
I was dragged into this. I didn't hire them, nor did my system have anything wrong with it. And now I'm out up to $5000 to replace it for absolutely no fault of my own.
I'm in the process of filing complaints with the BBB, IL State Attorney General, and a police report for theft and damage of personal private property. My next step, if this is not rectified immediately, is to hire an attorney.
I can't imagine how a company would mess up like this and not be willing to make it right. Disappointing is an understatement. There are so many great vendors out there, run by good and honest people. Look elsewhere.... read more
