Tried Okama for the first time today. I picked up 3 hibachi lunch specials (chicken, shrimp, & salmon) and a vegan black miso ramen. Total was just shy of $60 after tax and tip. If I could give them 4.25 I would, but 5 wouldn't be accurate either. Overall the first experience was pleasant. The prices are a bit higher than some other Japanese options like Sushiya and Kayo, however, they do bring something new with their hibachi options and ramen. The quality of the food was good. However, they did forget one set of salad and miso soup for the hibachi lunch specials. I'm sure it was an honest mistake and they're still in a soft opening mode, so no big deal. We really enjoyed the hibachi shrimp and salmon. It was flavored nicely and not overcooked. We got one fried rice and one white rice. The fried rice was simple but really good. The miso soup and salad was a nice addition to the lunch special. The chicken hibachi was ok but kind of dry. All three came with a nice assortment of sautéed veggies - onions, zucchini, mushrooms, and carrots. That was a great touch. The vegan miso ramen was pretty good, but still not comparable to options in convoy (eg. menya ultra). It was loaded up with veggies like bok choy, corn, bamboo, tomato, and topped off with fried tofu. The broth was tasty, although a bit salty. They included a soy sauce boiled egg which was super tasty. I'd definitely get it again, although I'm curious to try their tonkatsu ramen next time. Inside was a bit in disarray. You could clearly see they were still settling in and didn't have any decorations up yet. Anyhow, I'm happy they are here in Millenia. I'll definitely go back soon and try some more things on the menu (right before or after a pit stop to Sharetea... hehe). read more

Another great find! We were in the area. Haven't been down to Otay in years. When we first saw the restaurant, there was only one family eating there. That usually isn't a good sign but we thought we would try it anyways. We were pleasantly surprised. Service was really attentive, friendly and nice. We ordered: -spicy tuna roll -Okama roll (salmon, tuna, yellowtail inside with avocado and masago outside) -house special fried noodle -chicken shoyu ramen The noodles were the biggest hit - not too greasy, and lots of variety of different protein (salmon, beef, shrimp). I would also go back just for the Okama roll. Their rolls aren't huge like other places, but the flavor is still nice. The ramen bowl had a nice flavor, lots of noodles and chicken. The broth had a little kick of spice too. After we ordered we realized that this was a popular restaurant in the neighborhood as more people came in. Really delicious food! We ordered the steak hibachi lunch and a veggie lover ramen. The steak hibachi was 10/10! I really liked it, I liked the stir fried veggies and the steak. The fried rice was also good. I ordered the lunch portion and it was a really good size for lunch. The veggie lover ramen was 8.5/10, I really liked it but it was missing some flavor (some sauce or something to give it an extra kick) but overall it was good. Is a really good vegan option if you do not eat meat, I always appreciate a restaurant that adds a vegan dish. Overall I give this place a 5 stars for food, service and cleanliness. The only reason why I opt to give it a 4 is the pricing... I understand right now everything costs more and the quality of the food is good but for me it was pricey as they charge $20+ per plate outside of lunch hours. read more

This place is was alright. First thing I noticed was that the paper menus they gave us were wrinkled and had sauce stains on them which means they reuse paper menus. I would recommend switching to laminated or QR code menus for sanitation reasons. Second thing was that their ramen bowls barely had any broth, I kept having to move my noodles to the side just to get half a scoop of broth in my spoon. My soft boiled eggs also had egg shells, I had to take a few off and lastly the tonkotsu black garlic ramen was just okay, it was kinda good but not the best I've had. The flavor wasn't as rich. There's lots of seating inside and outside and the tables are pretty spaced out. I ordered the Vegan Black Miso Ramen and my friend ordered the Ebi Ramen. We also shared some Takoyaki. The takoyaki was delish. The soups were big and the presentation was good. My ramen had a variety of toppings--corn, bok choy, tomato, fried tofu, seaweed, and some pickled veggies and bamboo shoots. I added an egg to my ramen, which came out to nearly $2 more but oh-so worth it. These ramen eggs were so good, I probably would have ordered 2 of them. Now, why the 2/5 review, you may ask? I am giving Okama a 2/5 because the broth was so bland. I am not sure if we came on an off-night but the broth had hardly any flavor, which was really disappointing. There weren't any condiments on the table and I didn't think to ask the server. I will probably return on a different night and give it another chance. Just know there is miso in the 'spicy tonkotsu' broth because the only difference between that and 'spicy miso' ramen is a single nori vs cilantro topping. Argued with the waiter that the kitchen mixed up the soup base for my order. I know what fermented soybeans taste like bro (I eat miso regularly) and it's in my soup! Ramen wasn't anything stand out or special. Chicken with veggies was decent. Believe the reviews claiming food poisoning-- TMI it was the best colon cleanse ever... Hibachi is a grate over a typically small round grill. Teppanyaki is flat top. Food is more teppanyaki style and not hibachi. Hibachi soup is just chicken bullion in water with a floaty white mushroom slice. I get times are hard for restaurants but tell me why should I eat here when I could make better meal at home? I hate having to ever write a less than 5 star review, but hopefully this helps in improving the taste and portions of the food. I've ordered food here before, but only ramen and it was good, so my family decided to order here again today, however we decided to try some additional things aside from the ramen. My husband ordered a hibachi platter, which looked pretty hefty when we opened it (we ordered take out). Unfortunately it was really bland and lacked flavor. Portion size looked like you were getting bang for your buck, but flavor-wise it was a disappointment. I ordered a grilled salmon salad, which tasted like a salad and salmon was seasoned fairly well but I noticed was sliced extremely thin, maybe not even a quarter of an inch thick. My husband asked how I liked it and I told him for $9.50 and knowing the high cost of fish, I wouldn't be super opposed to ordering it again. Come to find out, it was $13 for the salad which was essentially just iceberg lettuce and 4 pieces of tomatoes sliced in half. It came with ginger dressing which was good but also with another creamy dressing which tasted and looked watered down. We ordered a couple of rolls, even ate some of the ginger as a palette cleanser, but even the raw fished lacked flavor. All I tasted was the big piece of imitation crab. I tried to add wasabi, but the wasabi was also weak. I hope that the owners do something to improve their food, as there aren't any Japanese spots around the area that serve both good ramen and other Japanese cuisine together. I usually drive all the way up to Kearny Mesa area for my ramen but I'm glad I found this gem l, super close to my home.
