I liked the clean, simple yet classic feel of the restaurant. It gave a traditional vibe that fit well with the type of comfort food they were serving. I enjoyed the gomtang soup with rice and pork a lot and it tasted so good with the kimchi. Some of the best kimchi I've ever had lol. Not too sour and fermented but just enough to pair well with the soft and rich flavors of the soup. The pork was thinly sliced and it felt like the right amount of meat with each bite. Definitely give this place a try when you're in Hawaii!
Place is clean and service was quick and nice. It's all bar seating. I got their Dweji-Gomtang and shared sake with my friend. Generous amount of pork even for just regular size. Highly suggest eating with the ssamjang sauce (?) and kimchi on the side. Rice never got super mushy throughout the meal. Overall, it was ok. The quality of the broth and pork definitely tasted fresh with no heavy seasonings that would make you feel bloated after.. but overall wouldn't be something I'd come back for all the time. I'm ok with paying the amount for the quality, but I'd also be ok with making the same thing at home with lesser quality that tastes the same. I'm happy I got to try this place. Def worth a try.
I was waiting for the hype to die down and reservations to be more reasonable and randomly checked and open reservations for a reasonable time! Easy to make online. Parked in the sky Ala Moana self park and got a follow up ticket for free parking at the restaurant. The entrance faces Makaloa and it's all counter seating. Naeng jeyuk- came out immediately, super tender pork, plenty of pickled onion, about 6 slices a perfect appetizer. Dweji gomtang - not murky but clear and clean taste with super tender pork slices. The portion was plenty for me but I can see why someone might order a large if you don't get other dishes. I could see why this was the specialty of the chef of culinary class wars. This was simple and hearty all at the same time. Kimchi cold noodle - it's made with somen and super delicious. Probably the best cold noodle I've had on Hawaii. Refreshing and delicious. Topped with egg and kimchi and cucumbers and two slices of pork. Loved it!!! Cup mandoo - not was I expected. Thought it was going to be a cup full of mandoos. It was like a steamed meat cake covered by a wrapping and was juicy and delicious. This one took the longest but still fast and delicious. Their kimchi is more fermented which is my favorite and best for eating with the pork. There's cold barley tea at each seating so don't have to ask for more water. There's cups and utensils and napkins. We were in and out in 35 minutes. It was fast and delicious and perfect. Loved it and lived up to the hype!
This was one of the few places we really wanted to try in Hawaii. Unfortunately it was a bit overhyped as we felt the dweji gomtangs were a bit ordinary. The dweji gomtangs had a clean taste and the lard donkatsu was crispy with nice flakes. The two dishes that stood out to us were the cup mandu and kimchi cold noodle. The mandu was flavorful and the cold noodles had a mild flavor with the perfect bite to the noodles. While the food quality, service, and ambiance was well done I don't think I'd come back again. None of the standout dishes were anything special you couldn't get anywhere else in my opinion. LA Ktown definitely has something of similar quality and taste.
I've been wanting to try this place for a while and I'm glad I finally did as the food is super flavorful at an affordable price. I definitely recommend reserving beforehand, as I noticed that the wait time was a little long for walk-in's. The restaurant faces Walmart/Sam's Club. Parking is inside of Sky Ala Moana and staff gave us a validated ticket that made parking free! I would come back again if I ever crave donkatsu. My top 2 dishes would have to be the Lard Donkatsu and the Mini Pork Dupbob. I loved how I could taste the subtle char on the Pork Dupbob, and how the meat practically melted like butter with the rice. The crispy exterior of the donkatsu is so distinct compared to other katsus I've tried, and the meat is incredibly tender. Both cooked to perfection. I don't typically reach for tea at restaurants, but their house made tea tasted just like a dessert and went down so smoothly. It's within arms reach (next to the napkins and utensils) so you can refill as you please. It was our first time trying Gomtang and like the menu states, it's truly the "essence of simplicity." It's a light broth and despite having the Gomtang with chili oil, it wasn't overly spicy. There's rice in the soup if you are expecting noodles. The side soup that comes with the Lard Donkatsu tasted just like Gomtang, but I'm not too sure (?). The Naeng Jeyuk tastes just like bossam and pairs well with the ssamjang (?). The Shrimp Katsu has a crispy breading, similar to the Lard Donkatsu and is cooked to perfection as the shrimp was soft and tender.
This is wayyy better than the one i went in Bayside, NY. Im not talking about taste, they both are awesome. This honolulu location deserves my 5 stars is because: 1. You can reserve online directly on their website via Resy. 2. Has more type of dishes. See photos. 3. Since we ate super fast as is 35min, there's an opening for walk in. They let walk in ppl sit in even though no spot on online Reservations. By the way, this one is located behind Renaissance Hotel Resort & Spa. Here's my take on Okdongsik in Oahu. Sorry I'm a few weeks late on this review. Food (3 stars) + The pork cutlet katsu was crispy, simple, and well-executed, though nothing extraordinary. ~ An appetizer that seemed like a fried root vegetable had a nice texture but was just okay in flavor. ~ The dumpling was like a reverse XLB. It had a subtle, clean taste--pleasant but not a standout. - We had two of their specialty soups. One was a cold kimchi broth, and another a clear pork-based soup. Both were simple, clean, but lacked bold flavor. They offer a kids' portion of the soup, which is half the price and allowed us to order other dishes. Service/Ambiance (4.5 stars) + The staff was accommodating, especially for a party of seven in a small, bar-style space. + The minimalist, modern feel--bar seating, close interaction--made the experience comfortable. If you go, plan a reservation due to its reputation. The food didn't blow me away, but if you enjoy simple, clean flavors, you may appreciate it more than I did.
TL;DR Korean comfort food in a refined setting. The Dweji-Gomtang, their signature dish, is lacking the depth of flavor I usually enjoy. ----- Let me caveat my review by stating that I do believe Okdongsik is worthy of a 5-star rating. All of the dishes offered here are of the utmost quality. However, I personally found the Dweji-Gomtang to be rather bland, which is why I don't see myself returning to Okdongsik often (or at all). Hence, the 4-star review. Okdongsik is located in Sky Ala Moana. There is dedicated, validated parking in the building. My wife and I found the layout of the parking garage to be confusing, so take that into consideration and plan to arrive a few minutes earlier than anticipated. Since this was our first time visiting Okdongsik, we ordered almost everything on the menu. I had the La-yu Dweji-Gomtang and the Lard Donkatsu, while my wife ordered the Kimchi Cold Noodles, the Ok Donggeurangttaeng, and the Shrimp Katsu. The katsu dishes were delicious, and my wife loved her noodles. My favorite dish was the seafood cake. They prepare it in a cast iron mold directly behind the counter so the sizzling and the aroma catch your attention when the batter hits the griddle. It's got great texture and flavor. The Dweji-Gomtang is described "clean and savory," which I feel like is a little misleading. It's definitely a clean and light flavor, but I wouldn't describe it as savory. There is a lack of salt and umami, which I believe would elevate and round out the dish. I will say that I was impressed with the volume of slice pork that was included in the broth. And I loved the intensity of the gochuji; it complimented the pork slices perfectly.
The store gave a modern homey vibe with the wood, raw concrete, and white paint. The kitchen was very neat and well kept. We did walk in but I recommend having a reservation if you want to be seated together. It's bar seating so everyone is seated side-by-side. We had the gomtangs and the broth was very clean. The la-yu's spice level was very tolerable. The kimchi was superb! I added it into my soup after having half the bowl:) The Maesil Aide was the right amount of sweetness and paired perfectly with the broth. Will definitely come back and try the lard donkatsu!!!
Date of Visit: 5/26/2026 OKDONGSIK is one of the newly rising Korean restaurant in Honolulu. Highly recommend for tourist to visit if carving for Korean food! OKDONGSIK started in Seoul back in 2017, and has been listed on the Michelin guide for Bib Gourmand restaurant starting from 2018. Opened in New York in 2022, and gradually opening up in Honolulu, LA, etc. Dweji-Gomtang $18 Highly recommend the beef meat and bone broth with thin sliced pork. Added rice, green onion for flavoring, and with kimchi and gochujang on the side. The soup was clean and clear, and the rice and pork was cooked just on point. Lard Donkatsu $21 We also got the pork loin cutlet with cabbage salad, soup, and rice. The crispy pork cutlet was very delicious. Ok Donggeurangttaeng $5 The meaty seafood cake was a must try too! Lightly seasoned with soy sauce. Shrimp Katsu $7 We also got the deep fried shrimp cutlet with tartar sauce. A nice side to add on.
If you're a fan of the show Culinary Class Wars, you're probably familiar with the chef that opened this place. The NYC location has been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand and it does in fact live up to the hype. The restaurant only has bar seating, and it's pretty limited so reservations are a must. We've tried almost all of the dishes at this point and all are good. The famous Dweji Gomtang is pork-based soup that is simple but comforting. The Ok Donggeurangttaeng (seafood patty) is our fave among the small dishes and the lard donkatsu is also delicious.
Stopped by Okdongsik and ordered the pork bone soup, then shared the pork katsu and seafood pancake. Everything tasted fresh and clean without feeling too heavy. The soup was simple but really flavorful, and the portion was more filling than I expected. The pork katsu was crispy and the seafood pancake was a good one to share. The restaurant itself isn't very big, so seating is pretty limited. If you go during peak hours, expect a wait or make a reservation ahead of time. Overall, a solid meal, and I'd come back to try more of the menu.

Okdongsik is a great comforting meal as long as you have the right expectations. Their signature dish is their Dweji-Gomtang - a very light pork soup served with rice. This is not a porridge, nor a rice-soup, nor a rice-on-the-side situation; instead, a bowl of freshly cooked white rice is submerged in a light and hot pork broth with a few slices of thinly sliced pork on top. The soup has a very mild but pleasant flavor, just don't expect it to be heavily seasoned like a pho broth might be. There is a red-pepper paste served on the side to add a bit of additional flavor for the sliced pork, though they heavily discourage you from mixing this directly into the soup. Other items on the menu were surprisingly good. They only serve a limited number of portions of tonkatsu every day, and we thought their take on tonkatsu was excellent. The pork was tender and the coating was crispy without being too greasy. Of course, this is not a "tonkatsu restaurant", so this comes without the fanfare of grinding your own sesame seeds. The seafood cake was also quite delicious and very nicely seasoned - a strong and I think welcome contrast to the mildness of the soup. The restaurant itself is all countertop seating with a partially open-kitchen. You can see some of the food being prepared, and it looked like there was a larger prep area in the back. Can't pronounce it... Just know that it's worth the visit as what you think you know about Korean cuisine as I've never been to Korea has completely made me a lover of this light and flavorful side of this fence found at Sky Ala Moana ground floor with entrance on Makaloa Street. Once you enter this cozy place it does give you that ramen shop vibe with the expose kitchen where you can see it all being made the long counter seating is different as there's no preferred seating we're all in for the show. There is a break between morning and evening service as we arrived just before they close for the moment and you check in using the provided iPad is a nice and convenient tool though with very little space to wait wished they had stools outside as it can be quite some time it was about 10 minutes for us which wasn't that bad. Love the menu "Essence of Simplicity" precisely to describe what you're in for as I ordered the "Cabbage Kimchi Noodles" a cold noodle dish that's topped with thin sliced pork at red cabbage already is stunning though as I started with the sip of the broth the cool and fresh clean taste is impressive so light not too spicy with a bit of tang was truly the star as the noodles cooked perfectly slight al dente is thin and chewy is the perfect dish in my opinion though I know many suggest Dweji-Gomtang and is a great option for those that avoid the spice and like the clear broth. I noticed on the napkin dispenser of the suggested way to use the Gochuji the little dollop of spice they give you on a dish which is the reason it's to the side to give you room to place your pork slice on it to add some Gochuji to enjoy...great gentle way to not offend yet learn as well and I do agree it was very tasty. You're served a complimentary pitcher of Boricha or barley tea as well is a very nice and absolutely loved it as I learned that it earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand (in Seoul) if you're clueless like me is a recognition of excellent quality food at a more reasonably priced establishment as the standard of cuisine is a great value as well and can understand how it was earned and have the absolute please to have experienced it right here in Honolulu. The original Seoul restaurant by Chef Ok Dong Sik, Okdongsik Seogyo, has only ten seats and specializes in two things, a refined clear dwaeji gukbap and kimchi mandoo. It is called gukbap because he uses only lean pork leg meat to create his broth. Unlike a milky gomtang, no bones or offal are used. The resulting light clear broth probably confuses enough Koreans living in America who think of gukbap as a heartier soup that it is called a dwaeji gomtang on the menu in Honolulu. If you expect a hearty deep flavor from gukbap or a collagen laden lip smacking soup from gomtang, Okdongsik's version is not for you. Dwaeji Gomtang. That's all you need to know. If it's your first time, this is what you order. The refined clear broth is unlike anything you can get in Honolulu. It's not clear if the rice, probably a Cali and not a Korean variety, is cooked using a toryeom method like in the OG shop - where hot broth is poured on rice and drained so the grains stay plump and whole. The paper thin, tender pork slices blanket the rice. There is no double meat version - yet. A lightly fermented kimchi and two week aged gochuji accompany the dish. No other seasoning is provided, although freshly ground black pepper is available upon request. The suggested way to enjoy a bite is to remove a pork slice, put it on a plate, dab some gochuji, then place that on a spoonful of rice. Follow up with a spoonful of broth. You can also place a piece of kimchi on another spoonful of rice for a different taste bite. There are two side dishes. Naeng Jeyuk is a plate of chilled pork slices w the gochuji - gochuji is basically a chili and pepper paste without fermented soybeans.The other side dish, Ok Donggeurangttaeng, is a grilled patty of meat and seafood using flour, egg, green onion, and soy sauce. Both come with soy and vinegar marinated white onion. Okdongsik Honolulu is located on the Makaloa Street side, not the Kapiolani Blvd side of Sky Ala Moana - technically, this makes the location in Koreamoku. Currently, the first seating - 20 counter seats - fills up immediately at opening. There is a pad for a waitlist. Inside, in the a/c, here is a short bench, otherwise you have to stand outside to wait or retreat to the Renaissance Honolulu. To get an idea of the wait scan the crowd. Young Koreans and men silently eat and go in about 20 minutes, a gaggle of Korean housewives may talk a bit taking 30 minutes, and locals take the longest because we eat slow and talk too much. Yes, there is a Michelin Bib Gourmand awarded since 2018 to the OG Seogyo-dong shop. It is because of the use of Korean pig, Korean rice, Korean produce, Korean meju. In America, local ingredients are sourced and the taste will obviously differ according to locale - no Michelin recognition is attached to any Okdongsik shop outside of Seoul. A darn good bowl of gukbap that I could eat every day. read more
This Korean restaurant is located along Makaloa Street, right behind the Renaissance Honolulu. The interior is modern and very open, and you can choose to either sit at the counter or along some tables on the left-hand side of the restaurant. I came on a Friday evening, and I didn't experience much of a wait when I placed my name on their tablet waitlist. I was seated within like 5-ish minutes at the counter, and helped myself to some cold barley tea. I ordered the dweji-gomtang, the main dish they're known for. The dish came out pretty quickly, and was paired with nice and sour kimchi and a spicy paste. I loved that the broth was light and flavorful, and I also enjoyed pairing the thinly sliced pork with the paste. However, I did find the broth to be slightly pork-y/gamey, if that makes sense, but otherwise enjoyed the dish! I would love to come back and try their other menu items, especially the tonkatsu, as it seems like another popular choice here. read more

When Okdongsik first came to Hawaii as a popup several years ago, I drove out to Ewa Beach for an early dinner. Unfortunately they sold out before I got there and it has bugged me ever since. Just the FOMO and not knowing what I missed out on. So fast forward a few years later and I hear they've opened a permanent shop in town? I knew I had to finally try it out. Okdongsik is located on the back side of Sky Honolulu on the ground floor (entrance from Makaloa, aka the side facing Walmart and Sams Club for those visual people out there). Unfortunately since I got there about 10 minutes after they opened, the first wave of people had just gone in, and I had to wait about 30 minutes. PRO TIP: Once you arrive, go inside, and put your name down on the tablet. The restaurant will text you when your table is ready. Inside the decor is very Korean-minimalistic, and all the seats are counter seats. But they're spaced out well enough that you're not rubbing elbows with your neighbors. We tried the following: - Dweji gomtang - this is their signature dish, and perfect for me that day since my stomach wasn't feeling the best. Great for those who are watching their sodium intake (I think...) because the flavor is very light. It is definitely not salty at all. A little lighter in flavor than I would prefer. - Donkatsu - this is their version of tonkatsu. It came with rice and soup on the side, and was very nicely seasoned and fried. The salad that accompanied it was also very yummy. - Ok Donggeurangttaeng - "meaty seafood cake". This was yummy. We actually didn't order this initially but I really wanted it after I saw everyone around me order it, and I'm glad I did. It really helped balance the light soup. - Maesil Ade - Korean green plum drink. This was yummy. Non-alcoholic and carbonated. I wasn't expecting the carbonation. I have to admit. I appreciate it for what it was because you could tell it was made with care and precision. However, admittedly although it was perfect for me on a day where I wasn't feeling too well, it is not my usual preference. I can see myself coming back if I'm craving something homey and warm, but probably not my first option for Korean. This opinion may change if they start serving the kim chee mandoo that they had at the popup (I heard good things about that). I think we were one of the few non-Korean groups there, so that tells you something about how legit they are as a Korean restaurant. read more
A small menu of delicious meals. Came here after seeing the chef on Culinary Class Wars, and while I don't think I'd give the gomtang a Michelin guide recognition, it was clean and delicious. We also tried the cold kimchi noodle soup, which was very refreshing and just as good as the gomtang. The seafood pancake and fried burdock sides would be a skip for me next time, but the shrimp cutlet was great and I'd order it again. Overall, I'd come back he read more

Feeling fancy for Korean? I think this may be the new spot. My friend lives nearby and saw this place open. It intrigued us both so we had to see what it was about. Turns out, this is just their latest restaurant, with locations in New York, Seoul, and few other cities. The seating is like a long bar and it's very intimate. We get to see the prep in-action and it's a cool experience. My friends and I ordered the Donkatsu, while my husband ordered the Dweji-Gomtang. Note, they limit 40 servings of the Donkatsu daily. Donkatsu was great. Pork was not fatty, yet juicy and crunchy. Coating was great and evenly distributed. Cabbage salad it came with was very refreshing and the little pickled daikon pieces were slightly spicy and very tasty. It also came with soup, which was like a very light chicken broth. Complimented the entire meal. The Dweji-Gomtang was interesting. The broth reminded me of the soup - very light, yet had a slight umami to it. Their house made gochu-ji sauce goes perfect with the beef and is so flavorful. We also got appetizers Ok Donggeurangttaeng and Naeng Jeyuk. The Ok D was pretty good. A little dry but you are supposed to eat it with the pickled onions and Gochu-ji, so altogether is a crazy mix of flavors and texture. The Naeng Jeyuk was super good. It had a really good umami flavor and well-balanced blend of salty and sweet. Also it was a good texture and size. That is recommended! Their pickled onions that came with the apps were also sooooo good. Goes well with each main element. Prices are not "fancy", actually quite affordable for the location and the vibe. I was surprised, and in a great way! Definitely gonna try this place again to try their Cabbage Kimchi Noodles, and other menu items! It works that my friend lives so close hehe read more

Cool and trendy ambiance, great friendly service! Was dying to try this place because love a good healthy soup and heard about the Michelin recognition. Getting a reservation was not as hard as I thought, was able to get in on a weekend about one or two weeks later. Parking was included in the building and validated by restaurant but need to be mindful of the time there as we cut it pretty close. Honestly (against popular opinion) I was not that dazzled by their signature item. I thought the soup lacked depth. The tonkatsu and side dishes were very good. Overall obviously a lot of fresh ingredients and love went into everything. A good experience and nice to try but maybe not my personal taste. read more
According to their website, Okdongsik translated as "a single-item restaurant" and "a restaurant where everyone dines together." As soon as I found out they opened for business, I had to give it a try of their famous Dweji Gamtang. This dish includes some thinly sliced lean pork with light clear broth. It was a truly comforting dish. They offer only a handful of main dishes and appetizers. By the time my party got seated before 7 pm, a couple main dishes and side were already out. I definitely will come back to try their Donkatsu. Their version of Tonkatsu. It features the Korean comfort food Dweji Gomtang, which The fried "Dongkatsu" sold out by the time we sat down. Nonetheless, the signature Dweji Gomtang was so comforting to enjoy it. We waited for 45 mins which was not too bad at all. I will go back to try the other dishes that were sold out. They prepared and put together all the food behind the counter. Seating is all at the counters. This is not something for a big group if you want to socialize among a big party. Most of the customers are from 1-3 parties. My friend and I waited for 45 mins after signing in on their waitlist app when I got there. It is not a splashy restaurant but they serve comforting and delicious food for sure. It is best to go before they open to get in line to avoid missing out other menu options. read more
Simple yet amazing food. It's a small restaurant that can maybe seat up to 20. We got there when it opened and got seated asap. The donkatsu is what we went for since they only make so many per day and sell out fast. The food was tasty and well presented. Portions are well thought out. The chefs inform you of what not to do to keep the flavors of each dish from mixing. While the menu and food is simple, its really good. The ambiance was very clean and modern. Even the cutlery was on another level. Overall, a must try if you want simple and authentic dining and food. read more
This place is legit! Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS). Stood in line for about 30 minutes not too bad they have a ipad to put your name on the waitlist. Ordered their signature dishes each of them are amazing. The staff were super friendly and helpful, they explain and there is a not on the table saying don't mix the sauce just use it for the meats. Keeping the broth pure and delicious. Kimchi was even amazing probably the best on island for a restaurant. Definitely recommend coming early as spots fill up fast! Parking kinda sucks unless you find street. There is in the sky building but the elevators are on the opposite side of the building. Just simple good food! Highly recommend read more

Thankfully didn't have to hard a time getting a reservation at this popular restaurant. The food is already prepared so it comes out quickly and hot. The gomtang tasted clean but frankly I found it to be pretty bland. I would have skipped all the appetizers I ordered as well. read more
Not so hidden, hidden gem! My friend recommended me this spot and to be honest, I wasn't very eager to try it at first. The menu just seemed too simple but that's exactly what this spot prides themselves on. Their establishment is small and "tucked away", on the side of Sky Ala Manoa thats facing Walmart. There's decent amount (~6+ spots) of street parking on this side. Since the establishment is smaller, they accommodate less people at once, so there was a slight but reasonable amount of wait time before we were seated, also they do have a bathroom inside! We ordered: - Ok Donggeurangttaeng: 8/10, delicious, but more eggy pancake like. I don't think we even saw a single piece of seafood within. - Dweji-Gomtang: 7/10, clean and hearty. I didn't care too much for this but the broth was good. - Mini Dupbob: 9/10, small add onto the mains, but sooo delicious. The scallion and garlic was very flavorful and the charred just brought it up another notch. - Lard Donkatsu: 10/10, the main star of the show. You get TWO pieces of tonkatsu, done perfectly and it also comes with broth (same one that the dweji gomtang) and rice. Especially as the kitchen is open concept, the service felt a lot more personal. I would definitely come back again if i'm craving clean, hearty korean food. read more
Decided to come here on a Saturday because I was in the mood for broth, and had always wanted to try this place. I got there around 11 and there was already a small line (place opens at 11:30am). I've always enjoyed beef broth varieties and never had pork version before, and let me say... I've converted, as long as it's made as clean and fresh like this. I was expecting it to be oily and fatty but nope, it had a very clean taste and for me, it was flavored just right. With some rice already in the soup, I was hitting perfect bites with my heavy metal spoon. Without shame, I picked up the bowl and finished the last bit of it. I don't think I even left a green onion behind. If I went on a date and we came here, I probably would finish this bowl the same way again. I loved the chili paste to dip the thin/ tender pork slices. The kimchi tasted fresh, which is the way I like it, and they served us a complimentary sparkling drink that just refreshed the palate. We also split a tonkatsu and let me tell you, I would order this again too. It was perfectly fried and juicy, without it being greasy. The only thing is... I wish the pork broth was served piping hot. It wasn't room temperature by any means, but for me, this kind of dish is best enjoyed when it burns off half of my taste buds. As fans of the Culinary Class Wars show, we had to try this spot. We made reservations ahead of time on Resy and it was not too difficult to get a table. We decided to share the Dweji Gomtang and the Lard Donkatsu, both of which were good. The restaurant felt upscale, yet the prices were reasonable. I would recommend coming if you are fans of the show to try the Dweji Gomtang, which tasted clean yet had depth in the flavor of the soup, but Hawai'i has plenty of amazing cutlet options elsewhere. read more
Great experience at the newly opened Okdongsik! I was worried about a long wait, but the reservation system was efficient. I arrived around 5:40pm on a weekday evening and put my name down on the tablet at the front entrance. The restaurant's system texted me when my table was ready--I did a shopping return at Ala Moana in the meantime, and once I was finished, there were only 2 groups ahead of me. My total wait time was around 20 minutes, but it didn't feel like that long. Okdongsik's menu isn't large, so it made it easier to order. My bf and I got the specialty gomtang soup, side pork rice ($5) and donkatsu (limited 40 orders per day). We both were given a side of kimchi and dipping sauce, and helped ourselves to the cold tea jugs placed on the counter. Our food came out super fast and my favorites were the donkatsu--so crispy and the soup--very light and perfectly seasoned. If I were to skip something it would probably be the side pork rice. Overall dining experience was great. I like the open kitchen concept, all of the dishes felt clean and high-quality, and the service was excellent. read more

Went here without a reservation (would highly recommend getting one), but i was lucky enough to be seated right away! I ordered the kimchi noodles, and it was yummy. I did expect it to be a little spicier tho, so it was a little mild for my taste. I loved how it was only "bar" seating and i got to see everything being made right in front of me. It's a good and intimate atmosphere. read more

The place is clean and the food was served very quick. The pork was sliced delicately and the broth was very balanced-zero MSG taste. I am very impressed on the balanced taste with the broth and any add on you may order. Next time I would try the deep fried pork chop for sure! read more
My wife wanted to try this place out hearing about all the hype and reviews. We got lucky and came early and were quickly seated. Service is quick and they have a very, very limited menu. The clear broth soup was good and the donkatsu (which is limited to 40 servings per day) was nice and crispy and tasty. They have a few seats around in which you can enjoy people watching or the male servers tending to all the patrons. We got lucky and scored parking on the street and since it was Sunday, parking was free, yay! read more

Food: 5 | Service: 4 | Ambiance: Casual & cozy Food-wise, this place absolutely delivered. The ambiance is low-key, casual, and cozy--exactly the kind of restaurant I enjoy. I appreciated that I could actually hear myself think and enjoy the meal without excessive noise. I originally came in for the kimchi cold noodles, but once I sat down and noticed everyone around me eating pork rice soup, I couldn't resist. I ended up ordering the regular (small) pork rice soup, shrimp katsu as a side, and the kimchi cold noodles. The server did warn me it might be too much food for one person... but I ordered it anyway Shrimp katsu -- Excellent. Perfectly crispy with just the right amount of breading, and the shrimp itself was thick, juicy, and meaty. It really felt like you're getting whole shrimp, not filler. Zero regrets ordering this. Pork rice soup -- Super comforting and hit the spot. I didn't realize how hungry I was until I started eating--I finished it down to the last drop of broth. That said, the pork itself wasn't entirely my personal style, but the soup as a whole was still very satisfying. Kimchi cold noodles -- By the time these arrived, I was already full (the server was right), but the broth was incredibly refreshing and flavorful. The noodle portion was quite large, and while the noodles themselves were fairly standard, the fried kimchi garnish on top was a nice touch. I liked it so much that I came back the next day with my family. Unfortunately, they had already sold out of the shrimp katsu, which was disappointing--but I ordered the large pork rice soup instead, and it was great. Overall, this is definitely a place I'd recommend and one worth trying. I'll be back. read more
This is part of a small, but growing chain of restaurants owned by a Black Chef on Netflix's Culinary Wars. His photo is on the outside window of the restaurant. The menu is limited, but the food is good. Their specialty is tonkatsu. It is comparable to what you would find in Korea, but at a higher price than in Seoul. I heard of Okdansik from the Michelin Guides and they earned a recommendation in NY. I made a reservation for this spot once before but decided to skip out, thinking the menu looked bland as hell. It was like clear soup with rice. Couple days ago, I made a bet with my partner to book a reservation, if the black spoon chief was able to get past the first round of the competition. He did so I lost and made the reservation. Honestly the signature dish was the soup and rice and it was bland as hell. However, it was a very clean which made the katsu and the other dishes we ordered taste really great. The food was well prepared. The service was excellent, the servers were very respectful and the food came out really quick. They would swing by and check in once in a while, in the Asian respectful way. It was nice and wasn't destructive. The restaurant was fairly small, believe there were about 25 seats, all counter seats. The kitchen looks clean and they were blasting 90s music. It was kinda fun for me Caz I'm that era. I couldn't get them full points purely because there wasn't that "wow" this is amazing. You can make reservation on Resy. We came here on a Sunday around 12:30pm and there was no line so maybe you can just walk in too. I love small restaurant that focuses on few items and do it right. We tried the pork soup, Kim Chee cold noodles, tonkatsu, and fish cake. They were all good. Pork soup is very porky so plan accordingly. I did enjoy Kim Chee cold noodles. It was refreshing and not spicy. I also like their round fish cake. Everything is made to order. It's open kitchen and counter sitting only. Clean and good service. One last thing, this place isn't your typical Korean restaurant with BBQ. read more
What a great way to enjoy a simple meal! Located at the base of Sky Condos is a small restaurant. It only serves 3 main dishes but the service is great and food delicious. Jake was our outstanding server and cook. The rice porridge with thin sliced pork with a clear broth was a treat on a cool day. But the star was the katsu. Crispy on outside, moist and tender in inside. The cabbage slaw was outstanding. In fact when we commented to Jake, he gave us another portion plus a small container of the sauce! Cute little spot behind Walmart/Sams. Their menu is pretty simple. Had the chilled pork appetizer (naeng-jeyuk) and it came with a good amount of meat! They give you the hot sauce to eat with it and it was not bad. Also Got the beef soup (Dweji-gomtang), of course, and it has such a clean but flavorful taste to it. Lots of rice in it. And a good amount of pork. Definitely warm the soul and would be good for hangover soup LOL The pork katsu (Lard donkatsu) was soooo good! Not oily at all! Wished they gave more cabbage with the dish. A good 2 sized piece of pork. The sauce is a sort of tonkatsu sauce. Not the usually mustard/tonkatsu sauce like tamafuji. I've been here on two separate occasions and both times have been great! Service was efficient, restaurant was clean, and the food was tasty! On my first visit I had the Lard Donkatsu which was prepared right in front of where I was sitting. It was perfectly crisp and the seasoning was just right. On my second visit I had the Dweji Gomtang which is the signature dish here! The broth was fragrant and had a very clean taste. I recommend trying the broth first before you mix it with the rice so that you can taste the different flavor profiles. This is a great dish for when you're feeling under the weather or when you want something warm and soothing! The space is pretty cozy and can fill about 15 guests so it's recommended you make a reservation (especially if you're going to visit for dinner or on the weekend). Parking is also limited on the street but I believe you can park at the Sky Ala Moana and get validation for 1 hour. The other option would be to park at Walmart. read more
There's something about your 30s where soup hits so good. Some say the dweji gomtang is too simple but for me the clear savory soup is absolutely perfect, just warms my soul. Would come here every week if I could. The menu is super limited so they do just a few things and do them well. From what I understand, the other menu items outside of the gomtang are specific to the Honolulu location of Okdongsik, like the tonkatsu and cold kimchi noodles, both of which are fantastic as well though less unique to this restaurant. I'm just sad that this place has gotten even more popular after Culinary Class Wars that it's become so hard to book But happy for the success of this restaurant! read more

Who would've thought a restaurant with three items on the menu would be packed every day... But Okdongsik is! Arrived a little before 1130 to a line waiting outside the restaurant to open. We were fortunate to get in with a couple of unlucky people having to wait till a seat opened up. Comfort food. Like eating at grandma's house... something you make on a cold day that's satisfying and filling and warm... The thin slices of pork over rice in a light pork broth are delicious. Having a side order of the tonkatsu never hurts either! Crispy and right out of the fryer. Tried the cold noodles also... the noodles here look like somen noodles. Tasty light broth with a touch of citrus. The only other item really is a seafood, pancake, and thick slices of fatty pork you can eat with rice. Makes choosing a lot easier. Counter seating only. Expect to wait... Even with reservations expect to wait. Service is fast and efficient. read more
Went here on our last day in Honolulu. We tried to get a reservation beforehand but they were booked all the way till mid January already. We were able to walk in on a Saturday at 1pm, although the wait for it was an hour. It was well worth it. The Dweji-Gomtang is delicious. It is so pure and comforting although some may describe it as just pork water. The large portion will fill you up, as it seems to be packed with pork. However, the kimchi cold noodle was even better and unlike any other cold noodle we've had. It was the best one we've ever had. The noodle had a chew unlike any other. This one is a must try. I don't typically like cold noodle but this one made me consider otherwise. Seafood cake was small but worked well with the onion they provided. We left feeling sad that they don't have one in Koreatown since it was only a popup, till next time I guess. read more
Initially I thought I wouldn't come back to Okdongsik very much-- however we've come by three times in the past two months! The Dweji Gomtang is my favorite. It's so delicious and light, perfect for a chilly night. I crave it whenever the weather gets below 70. My boyfriend loves their cold kimchi noodles too! Their menu is quite limited but every item is delicious and worth trying. Walking in for an early dinner is great, there isn't usually a wait, however since Culinary Class Wars came out it's been a bit busier. Service is good and prompt! As a quick, casual bite Okdonsik really hits the spot. Definitely recommend! read more

I went here with a former co-worker and we tried a few of their items. They don't have many items on their menu so that's how you know they specialize in certain items. We tried their famous dweji-gomtang soup, tonkatsu, and korean pancake. They give you complimentary kim chee and tea. Service was good and food was not bad.
