    Veggie tendon
    Mia M.

Decent tendon and a good option in SALT. Came here on a weekend and there were people doing takeout, as well as a couple of other tables sitting, but it was easy to get in. You order everything on tablets. The tempura was decent and crunchy, but not the best tempura I've had (high bar in Hawaii though!). Would come by again if I was hungry and at SALT, but wouldn't seek it out.

This new place took over the redfish poke space in the SALT complex. It's super ono! I got the volcano bowl with ahi, which is basically a two type poke bowl with one piece of shrimp tempura. It was delicious and the tempura batter was bomb. Rice was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Portion was a bit small for the price ($20) imo, but it was enough food for me. The space is nice and clean and I liked that you could order self-serve through an iPad or with the host. Food came out quick and service was friendly. There's plenty of seating inside, but I opted to eat outside at one of the shaded tables in the courtyard. Def worth a visit if you're in the area.

It was 4th of July and I was at a card show in SALT Kaka'ako. It was my first time here and I wanted a poke bowl. The service was terrific, I got to order from the little tablet and the nice waitress got my food and drink pretty quick. I would totally come back again if I'm around SALT again.

The ginger ahi and spicy salmon combo was mayjaahhh. Okome's poke is fresh and packed with flavor and served over a bed of rice ($1.00 more for sushi rice). You can dine in or order to go using the kiosks on the left hand side of the entrance.

Newish spot at SALT. There's been a few turnovers in this specific store so hopefully, they stay long-term. Food - 5/5 Ambiance - 5/5 Service - 10/5 We came out on a Sunday and didn't realize they were closed already. We walked in 10 min past closing. But they allowed us to order for take out. Much Mahalo! The inside is clean and inviting. Ordering is easy via self order kiosk. Food is great. Service is even better. As you guys know, some establishment would not entertain guests after hours and for some that do, they may give you an attitude. Well the staff here were graceful and accommodating. This is definitely the Aloha spirit and it is much appreciated!! Food is great as well. We tried a few items including the Hawaiian tendon. One caveat is if you get it for take out, eat it ASAP as the tempura may get soggy. For best experience, just get it for dine in or eat it at one of the out door seating areas at SALT. The food was tasty and poke fresh. We'll definitely come back!

This tendon and poke spot is located at Salt Kakaako. It took over the space that was Redfish. It's a self service restaurant. You order at the kiosk right when you walk in. They call your name when your food is ready and you pick it up at the counter. We got the Hawaiian Tendon with ginger ahi $24.75 plus a piece of fried oyster $2, Sukiyaki Udon $12.75, chicken karaage $3.75 and a can of Oahu Coffee Vanilla Latte $5. The sukiyaki udon was excellent. The broth was perfect. The rice in the tendon bowl was room temperature. The ahi poke was fresh and so good. The tempura items weren't as crispy as I'd like. The bottom on the tempura items were probably soggy from sitting on the rice. The fried oyster on the other hand was really crispy. It was panko breaded instead of using the tempura batter. It was my first time trying the Oahu Coffee in a can. The vanilla latte was just right and I liked it. It comes in other flavors that I want to try one day.

This is a great place to go to when you don't need anything fancy. Actually, now that I think about it, I can't really review this place because it has "Poke" in the name but I didn't try the poke. But I did try their tendon (tendon in Japanese, not in English). Well, no I didn't try that either - I ended up with sukiyaki kimchi udon and sweet potato tempura which hit the spot perfectly. I like to think it counts as tendon because udon has -don in it but... You order and pay at a kiosk. They call your name when your order is ready and you go grab your tray and can sit wherever you want inside to eat your food. There's water that you can serve yourself, and you throw away your own trash. The tables and wooden chairs are very solid and sturdy. Honestly, I am enamored of places like that - very self-service but good hot food. They also have plastic-can coffees from O'ahu Coffee Roasters available to purchase with your order. I was not expecting that! Was a special treat.

I went here once during their soft opening. On my second visit today, the quality seems to have gone downhill. Okome makes tendon and poke bowls with a self-service concept where you order on a tablet and pick up your food. I like the convenience and the quick service. There's plenty of seating for dine-in. My first visit I got the tendon and shoyu poke bowl. I was surprised by how crispy the tempura stayed even though we did take out. I thought it was a pretty good flavor and portion for the price. This time, I got the same thing but with spicy ahi. The tempura was noticeably more soggy and oily than last time. The shrimp was overcooked, which was sad cause it's a nice big shrimp. The poke was also a smaller portion, but the last straw was a long strip of fish that looked like it was cut partially into cubes but not fully. I expect more attention to quality especially for this price. It's too bad that the food that had me coming back here a second time was not up to par this time.

Always wanted to try this place because it looks and smells so awesome, but I was kind of disappointed by the ratio of fish to rice. The spicy salmon poke was yummy, but it was about 70% rice to 30% fish :/ the shrimp tempura was really crisp and flavorful though. My boyfriend got the island crunch which was definitely better value, but still a lot more rice than proteins. I guess to be expected at a saalt restaurant but not really worth the price, much rather foodland or keaumoku seafood. Also, the server was sweet when she brought us our water and food but I don't think the tablets for ordering are necessary unless it's a small plates format, just seems like a waste imo

Rice to see you... I've been patiently waiting for Okome as soon as I found out, they were taking over Redfish location at SALT. The wife been to the Kapolei location and the menu item seems identical how it is ordered is very different here in Kaka'ako. I'm sure you're able to place order at the service counter what's nice is they have a self ordering kiosk which is a nice option and I did so ordering my Poké bowl and knew exactly what I wanted as soon as I saw it, after placing my order, I casually walked in and was immediately greeted by a gentleman who asked if I had any questions to which I replied. I had placed my order and he said he will call my name when it's ready.. I ordered the Ginger Ahi which comes with white rice and I was told from the staff that is Japanese rice from Fukuoka that the painstakingly put many efforts into preparing this price. I was very excited as you can build your own Poké bowl as it comes basically with just the poke and rice and pickled ginger so with this, I opted to add ginger topping for an additional $2 which did bring the total pretty high to just under $20. The rice is actually prepared like sushi rice which honestly isn't how I like my poke rice but it was cooked perfectly topped with limu and the ginger ahi but that cold ginger onion really made it pop. Inside is very nice and spacious with lots of table seating and counter seats as well all nice and clean and brand new. They do not provide trash cans or bathrooms that would be using what SALT has. It's a very interesting. Minimal concept one that has been done in Japan for many years and hope that this works for them as it's different to have interaction with a staff but always a welcome spot in Kaka'ako. Thank you!

    - recommend trying - Service The ordering system is a mix of modern and minimal: you place your order on an iPad at the entrance, though there's also someone at the counter who can take orders. Beyond that, there aren't additional servers, so the experience leans toward self-service. Food The food was good overall, though my perspective comes with a bit of bias from having tried Tendon Kohaku in Washington state. What makes this spot unique is the option to add poke -- salmon, tuna, or hamachi. I went with the spicy salmon poke, since salmon is my favorite for both poke and sushi. * The tendon itself was tasty, and considering Oʻahu doesn't have many tendon-focused restaurants, it's refreshing to see one here. There's definitely room to grow, but the foundation is solid. * The cabbage salad and miso soup were both satisfying and balanced the meal nicely. * I do wish the poke portion was a little more generous, especially with the total coming out to nearly $30 without drinks or tip. * The rice could use some improvement in texture and flavor. * Overall food rating: 7.5/10. With a few tweaks, this place could really shine and become a standout. Ambiance Located in the heart of Kakaʻako near Moku, the restaurant is easy to access with both street parking and a garage that offers validation. The space itself feels clean and simple, but it could benefit from a bit more brightness and consistency. Music didn't start playing until more guests arrived, which made the earlier atmosphere feel a little quiet and flat. Keeping the vibe warm and welcoming throughout the day would help bring more of that aloha spirit into the dining experience.

A little japan in hawaii. This great tempura spot is so fast and easy. We got in and ordered our foods on iPads. The food was ready and out in less than 10 min. Hot, fresh, nice and crispy. So good. Workers are also super nice and the guy who calls out the orders very local Bradda. Very welcoming and lots of seating with fast in and outs. Defs going here a lot for lunch!

Decided to finally check this place out since I work near by. Interior is clean and I appreciate the self-ordering area. I received my order quickly. I got the Wasabi Masago Ahi poke bowl. The fish quality was good, but I have to say the menu photo is a bit deceiving... The menu photo makes it seem like you'll get a hefty scoop of tobiko, but there was barely any tobiko in my poke bowl... and the "wasabi" flavor was totally absent. Little disappointed considering the price.

After hearing so many people say it's a must-try, I finally made the trip--and now I get it. We ordered the pork lau lau, fried butterfish, luau squid its like Daing filipino dish, short ribs, and macaroni salad. Every dish looks basic not something that needed color to make it look good. The pork lau lau was incredibly tender, the fried butterfish had a light, crispy coating without being greasy, and the luau squid was rich, creamy, coconut and The short ribs were packed with flavor and practically almost off the bone. Even the macaroni salad was the kind you keep going back for. The only thing I probably wouldn't order again is the lomi salmon. It wasn't bad--it just wasn't my favorite compared to everything else on the table. If you're visiting Oahu and only have time for a few local food spots, make Helena's one of them. It's the kind of place that reminds you why simple, traditional food never goes out of style. I'd honestly stop here one more time before heading to the airport if I had the chance. That's probably the best compliment I can give it. Fyi food portion are on the smaller side but trust me they will hit the spot.

If you're not a fan of seafood, don't let the squid deter you as it is a minimal part of the dish and added more of a crunchy textural component rather than actual flavor. This was my wife and my favorite dish. The luau pork was also very good though I liked the version we had at Toa Luau better. We also liked the haupia which was a very refreshing coconut pudding though for some reason our boys didn't like it. We also tried pipikaula which are thinly sliced dry-aged beef short ribs marinated in soy sauce and something else that made it sweet. If you know Korean barbeque, you'll instantly get the sensation that these are close cousins to galbi, though the pipikaula are much less sweet in comparison. The dry aging process also makes them a bit more dryer than galbi. On to more difficult stuff. I was enthusiastic about the fried butterfish collar but once I got a waft of the dish, I knew I was in trouble. I'm very sensitive when it comes to fish so the smell (more than the taste) was off putting. My wife was fine with it and enjoyed the dish, but if you aren't a fan of fishy fish, then I would skip it. The lomi salmon looked very much like pico de gallo with the addition of salt-cured salmon. My boys loved this dish because they love salmon but again I would steer clear if you are a seafood weakling like me. Alas, we come to poi. Had my hopes up since I love taro but the texture and a bit of sourness from fermentation deterred me from trying too much of it. I'm glad we tried it but not sure that we would get it again.

Since it was our last meal before leaving Hawaii and there were still a few Hawaiian dishes I hadn't gotten around to trying, this felt like the perfect spot. What I really liked is that they have a sampler plate with a bunch of classic Hawaiian dishes, and the menu actually breaks down what everything is. Clearly this is something people come here for, because it makes trying a little bit of everything way less intimidating. I split the sampler with someone, and overall I was pleasantly surprised. Some of the items didn't look the most appetizing at first glance -- one especially because of the color -- but flavor-wise, everything was actually really good. One of the dishes reminded me of a comforting chicken soup situation, the clear noodles were good, some of the other items were more savory, and it all balanced together well. The lomi salmon was one of my favorites -- kind of like a light, fresh tomato salsa or pico de gallo situation that paired really well with the pork and everything else on the plate. I didn't finish it all because I was already full, but I genuinely liked the variety and thought the flavors were rich and comforting. So if you're curious about Hawaiian food but don't know where to start, this sampler is a great move. Don't let the appearance of some of the dishes scare you off. Service was quick and everyone was nice. At first I kind of wished someone had walked us through the food a little more, but honestly, the menu already does that for you pretty clearly. Overall, I'm glad we came. It was a fun way to try the Hawaiian dishes we hadn't gotten to yet, and I'd come back to try more.

The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.

Now I've had a lot of these in my life, and I must say, Iyasume are easily the best. See musubi and onigiri have humble origins as a quickly made homespun snack or on the go lunch, and when you spot them in the convenience environment they're often a giant ball of rice with a tinge of protein or seasoning for flavor. You can see the line in the back hard at work, and they're very fast. You're sure to encounter a line when you arrive, but don't be scared, it moves quickly. I only had to wait about 5 minutes for mine to come up! Well worth it. Reasonably priced. Very filling. A taste of Hawaii and Japan in one place that'll have everyone smiling!

I bought kimchi spam, eel spam, inari spam, and a furikake rice ball. Didn't really interact with staff as they didn't offer to help while I viewed the items and I selected my items fairly quickly. I found purchasing four musubis very affortable. Finding parking was tough and expensive in the area. Not the restaurant's fault and probably drivers are not the bulk of their business.

3.5 stars We wanted…read moreto try authentic Hawaiian food and came across this spot. The owner was very friendly and took the time to recommend dishes for us, including the laulau and lechon kawali. We also ordered the BBQ short ribs. Overall, it was a good experience trying Hawaiian food, but it's just not really our type of cuisine. The laulau was quite dry, and the preparation felt more like meat that had been boiled or cooked in liquid, which isn't something I usually enjoy. The lechon kawali had a crispy pork belly texture, topped with something similar to a salsa, but it didn't suit our taste either. Unfortunately, the cabbage served with it also had some black spots, which was off-putting. The BBQ short ribs were the highlight of the meal and the dish we enjoyed the most. We appreciate the experience and the hospitality, but the flavors just didn't quite match our personal preferences.

Then someone wanted to change from rice to poi. I tried many times and no one answered. Their voice mailbox was full. We e ended going there to make the change. He gentleman looked like he was working be himself. We bads to wait almost a half hour for him to finish the order. 2. Price - the prices were higher than expected. All the plates were $26.00 and up. 3. Food - The poi was very tasty and fresh, although a bit watery. The lau lau had a lot of lean pork filling, not a lot of leaves. The long rice didn't have much chicken and was a bit watery too. We enjoyed the sweet potato. There was also lomi salmon, haupia onion and chili pepper water. 4. As mentioned before there isn't much parking. The restaurant wasn't busy when we got there. Overall the food and service was OK. The price was a bit high.
