It's simple, light, and not the ramen joint that it becomes in the evening. Kinda confusing. That said, your only decision is which of the available fishes you'd like to be your protein. The fish is simply glazed and roasted, the vegetables pickled. The presentation is gorgeous, with each component carefully spaced out on a large glazed ceramic place. The space itself is very small, so there can be a long wait. It's also rather expensive, and considering the lightness of the meal I left feeling slightly unsatisfied. Hands down my MOST favorite brunch spot of all time. You can literally smell the aroma of the fresh fish being cooked a block away and ever since my first time coming here, I can't stop going back. The place itself is tiny and tucked away near the Williamsburg area, but the the vibe of this place is so warming and homely. There is usually a wait here and they don't take reservations, but usually it's not too bad. (Otherwise, there's not too much to do around there) Anyways, every time I go, I love to get the rice with the egg and uni. They serve everything in a traditional Japanese style and always are delighted to explain everything in detail. Every fish no matter what I've gotten in the past here has been cooked and seasoned absolutely perfect. It's fresh and never over or undercooked. I love the tea here especially too, they freshly brew tea here for guests and was exceptionally friendly to me even though I came about 15 mins. before their closing time. On a Saturday morning, our 5 party wait time was around an hour. This seems to be typical, as the max amount that fits is an estimate of a 20 people. Pro tip: Go on a weekday morning if you can make it happen so you won't have to wait for 2 hours on the weekend. There is only space for about 12 people in there. There is no menu and the staff serves a traditional Japanese breakfast of their own design, with your choice of fish. I chose the braised fish in broth, but I would have preferred an entree with less bones (maybe the fish collar for me next time!). The appeal and charm I think is in the simplicity - nothing is over the top, you don't even have to make decisions about what to eat, and the food is a blend between high-end izakaya and Japanese comfort food. Although waiting and sharing a table in a small space would usually make me feel less than zen, I enjoyed my time at Okonomi and think that I could get over those factors to visit again next time I'm in Williamsburg. read more

I was absolutely blown away with the food here. And I lived in Japan for 4 months. The restaurant does not have a menu, but instead you get a choice of their fish choices, today they had 2 different white fish (I forgot what they were), but my friend and I each got one and both were absolutely excellent. The food is phenomenal and really healthy. You feel full after the meal and not the "I hate myself" kind of full, but content like you ate just the right amount. It was also really authentic Japanese food so that's a big plus. The service here was great too. The place is pretty small and only has 2 tables and a bar, so wait times could be crazy. We were told our wait would be an hour and a half, but it was really only about 30 minutes. I can definitely see longer wait times though. The good thing about waiting here though is that they take your phone number down so they call you before your table is ready so you can leave and explore the nearby Williamsburg area. There is also a Japanese ceramics store upstairs from the restaurant that sells a lot of well-crafted ceramic ware (cups, kettles, plates, etc.) and teas! Inside they have a little table the owner invited us to sit and relax while we wait for our table to be ready. Overall, a great experience, will definitely be going back when I can. Before I begin I need to confess that previously my idea of a nice Japanese meal was spending six bucks on a combo teriyaki bowl from my local fast food joint, Yoshinoya. On rare occasions, I would splurge and drop $30-ish on a Japanese buffet where I would stuff my face until I could no longer taste anything. The thought of spending a similar amount that may not fill me up entirely was previously outside my realm of reason or possibility until my girlfriend pleaded with me that we try Okonomi while we were in town. Immediately I was taken aback by the sheer tinyness of the entire place. 13 total seats divided into two four-tops and a short bar seating area that sits 5. The hour and a half wait was initially surprising, but considering the restaurant seats only 13-15, it's completely understandable. The wait staff was extremely friendly and dealt with the several walk-ins with much grace and tact despite the entitled jerks expecting to be sat immediately during peak lunch time. Today the fixed menu consisted of a set Japanese breakfast with choice of meat--either tuna or trout or a third fish I had never heard of before. We opted for the first two. My palate is obviously not refined or sophisticated, but each carefully prepared dish was exquisite, especially the lotus root thing smeared with this sweet potato stuff, to which I consciously did my best to slow my eating pace not only to savor the texture and flavor but to not be the idiot who wolfed down his $29 plate without even enjoying or experiencing it. I would recommend opting for the poached egg side because when combined with the 7-grain rice provides for a truly exquisite pairing. Absolute heaven on earth. Please ignore the pompous idiot who gave this restaurant 1 star due to its "full Caucasian waitstaff" who also admitted that the food was "the same as Japan." It is wholly unfair to fault a restaurant for being an hour and a half away, for having an hour wait due to its popularity, and for employing non-Japanese people. A lumbering idiot who proclaims himself as an "international man of mystery" aka can't get a date for the life of him so he uses his traveling experience as a poor man's Viagra for obvious lack in charm, personality, and looks. Anyway, our barley teas were perpetually full, empty plates were instantly cleared, and although we shared our table briefly with two other guests, the entire experience was intimate, delicious, and wholly worthwhile. Meals like this make me want to move to Japan. Okonomi had been on my list for months, but because of the limited hours, I never had the chance to visit during the week, and weekend rushes made it tough to justify a trip out to Wburg. I luckily had a few days off for the holidays and decided to venture out for a weekday lunch. My party of one got seated right away (all other sized parties had at least a 30 minute wait at around 2PM), and I plopped down in the middle of the eating bar. It was a bit later in the afternoon and they only had one fish selection left, their tuna belly. The rest of the set is preset, so I basically had no choice in my meal and happily sipped my barley while I waited. The wait for the food was quite significant (about 15 minutes for a tiny dining room), but wow, the presentation blew me away. The set itself was so beautifully and deliberately arranged. The fish was front and center and placed to show off the baked marks. I had three sides to the set: swish chard topped with a tofu puree, egg custard, and assorted pickled veggies that touched on every color of the rainbow. I also opted for two additional sides: homemade tofu and soy sauce and a soft boiled egg. The meal also came with a side of rice and some miso soup. Per the recommendation of the server, I poured the egg over the rice and broke the yolk. It was paired sooooo well with the fish, although I could've eaten just the rice like that (I'm a huge yolk fan). The fattiness and tenderness of the tuna made it melt right in my mouth. There was a very light simple miso glaze on the fish, which added the right balance of seasoning and letting the flavor of the fish shine. For the sides, I loved the pickled veggies. I love it when the veggies are still crisp and crunchy, as I find soggy pickles and kimchi especially to be too briny/sour and not that enjoyable to eat. I would've preferred double veggies and no other sides. The egg custard was fairly neutral in flavor and a nice color/texture variant to the display. The chard wasn't anything special and the tofu puree didn't do much to make it pop. I also thought the other tofu side had a nice flavor, but again, nothing remarkable. All-in-all, I loved my overall experience at Okonomi. The interior is small, cozy, and welcoming. The service was great, and they made sure I understood what I was being served and helped guide me through enjoying the food the way it was prepared. I also made friends with the couple next to me and we shared NYC/SF tips. My only real complaint was the value. I have no doubt that the ingredients are fresh and carefully selected, as I thought the quality of the food was superb. However, for $26 (tip is included in the prices), it was a very light lunch and I was starving just a few hours later. I would either go in for an early lunch or plan to snack in the afternoon if this is the first meal of your day. There was still enough of a line right before opening that we had to wait another 30-45 mins for food. The place is tiny though, so understandable. You barely have enough room to get in/out of your seat. It gets intimate af, but that's kind of what you're paying for at this place. They don't use butter or oil to cook anything so it makes you feel healthy af. Pretty traditional Japanese breakfast though, with everything set out and you only given the choice of fish. The fish is seasoned the way the chefs would like to prepare it that day- and when we were there, the majority of the fish preparations were simply broiled. The little, cozy Japanese place holds two roles: a traditional Japanese set breakfast/lunch spot in the morning & afternoon and ramen shop in the evening. We came here for brunch, but don't expect anything like waffles or pancakes... As we were seated at the bar, we asked for the menu (since nothing was handed to us). In return, the lady responded, "We don't have a menu. There's only one item." We were silent yet we were really amazed screaming with happiness in the inside! A moment of shock yet surprise. A part of us was like what? One item?! Another part was like oh yess!! This is so Japan. It's rare to find a spot like this that only serves one or even a few items in NYC! Since only a Japanese set breakfast was offered, of course, we got that! In our set, a local fish of the day was served with two side vegetables, an omelette cube, a miso soup, and a bowl of rice with kombu for $17. An additional onsen egg ($2) and uni ($7) could be served with the meal too. Along with the set items, three fresh local fish were available, and we got one porgy and another bluefish. Fresh, sweet and tasty! Surprisingly, it was our first time trying porgy, and the fish was deliciously roasted with great care and flavors leaving us a wonderful first impression on this fish. The only thing was that porgy is a rather small fish, so finding numerous small bones throughout the piece was inevitable. Many people tend to overlook their bowl of rice, because rice is always there as a complimentary item. It may look plain and simple, but finding a bowl of well-cooked rice is actually quite difficult. When you encounter some good rice, you know you will have an impeccable meal because it shows how much the chef cares about the small details and the basic foundation! You don't eat the egg and uni alone. You pour it into the bowl of soft and chewy rice and mix them! It was heavenly! My mouth was bursting with all sorts of flavors and textures. I loved the feeling of smooth, silky egg yolk mingling with the rich, creamy uni and the warm, fragrant rice. It was AMAZING! A bite into the bluefish made me finish the entirety soundlessly! I was expecting it to be good, but when it's even better than imagined, it was gone in no time. Not a regular bluefish eater, I heard that the fish tend to have a stronger, fishy taste (even when made fresh), but it was surprisingly mild tasting with a flaky meat kind of similar to a sea bass. The piece was simply seasoned with a sprinkle of salt but expertly roasted, which left me in a wondrous mood. Love it! We love this spot. This is one of those places that you always wanted to go but never had the chance, and once you made a visit, you ask yourself, "Why did I not come here earlier?" Okonomi is the best restaurant in Williamsburg. I know this, and state this as fact, because it is. It's the only place I actually get excited to eat at nowadays. They are everything I ever hoped a restaurant could be. Firstly, seafood is my favorite protein on earth. Not just seafood but sustainably sourced seafood, seasonably procured, and as local as you can get. First things first right? Can we really go on like this? Or do chefs and restauranteurs everywhere have to get hip to the fact that the earth is in some pretty serious trouble and do what they can to help shift directions and be a part of the solution? Okonomi's forward thinking ought to be inspiration to food establishments everywhere. Because they are clearly well trained chefs, everything they do is highly nuanced and balanced perfectly. They are masters of delicacy and restraint. Whether it be for their Japanese breakfast consisting of rice with dried bonito flakes, miso soup,a perfectly roasted and salted collar, or mackeral, or cod, it comes with a small pile of greens and custard (tomago?) and hot or cold barley tea. It's the perfect breakfast. I also went to one of the Ramen tasting nights and it was ridiculously good. There was a miind blowingly good dehydrated uni (made into ramen noodle, sounds like Portlandia yes, but no gimmick I assure you) ramen that was a highlight as well as a clear pea soup that made me think I'd never actually enjoyed the flavor of a pea ever in my life up until that moment. Apparently they now are doing regular ramen days/ nights where they are serving the same ramen dishes as they were at Yuji Ramen before they'd had enough of the Wholefoods pop up sorta angle (among new ones I'm sure) . I'm a bit torn on this one: I love what they're trying to do, but their implementation doesn't quite agree with me. The former is stronger, so I'm leaving it at 4 stars. First, I love that this place does Japanese breakfast; it's rare to find such a place. They're open in the morning, so it can be a legit (if not super-early) breakfast. It's a set menu: you pick the kind of fish you want and add-ons (onsen tamago and / or uni). We had the aji and yellowfin tuna belly (and added on one egg and one uni). The fish is flavored and grilled nicely. The accompaniments are overall solid. There's a fusion of western ingredients (e.g. radish) in the soup and the pickles have an American flavor profile. The rice is a seven-grain blend, so if you like soft rice (like my wife), you might be disappointed. The uni and egg are in the same sweet soy sauce; the uni isn't the freshest, but it works fine in the marinade. Have you ever had an authentic Japanese brunch before? I can't express how much I love this place. It's quite an experience to dine here. Super small setting. Less than 15 people can fit inside the restaurant. Therefore there's pretty much always a wait but it's so worth it. The attention to detail on the tasting menu is exquisite. They don't offer individual items. The breakfast tasting comes with miso soup and you're given an option to add the poached egg in a sweet soy sauce for $2. Their menu is ever-changing as they switch things up based on new crops and what they're in the mood to prepare for. I had the bluefish and it melted in my mouth. My friend got the perch which was wrapped in kelp and it was flaky and cooked perfectly. (When you're there you can actually see the fish bones brewing in the pot in their little workspace, as they prepare broth for their dinner spot, "Yuji Ramen". I want to try their ramen one night!) As with everything, the service is patient and welcoming at Okonomi. Our waiter new every little ingredient and delicacy that was on our plate. They didn't have uni when I was there but the onson egg with ikura was worth the extra $2 and delicious when mixed in the rice.
