I've been going to Quintessential Gentleman for several years now, but the difficult parking and increased prices have put me off. I was excited to see a barber open closer to my home in Woodberry. Daniel, the owner, gave me a great haircut. It was the end of the day, and I was his last customer. Despite all that, I had all of his attention. The cut was precise, as one would expect from an expert barber, but it was also very "on trend." The price point was very reasonable for a haircut and beard trim ($17). This is a great addition to Hampden. I highly recommend this shop. read more

Fantastic haircut from a great and interesting barber for a great price. I got a great haircut with very little wait from a really fascinating barber named Jut who has a graduate degree in history, and lectured me on topics from the historical inaccuracy of the movie 300 to the history of the middle finger. Very professional and easygoing. Well well worth $16, especially with the warm lather and straight razor treatment for the back of my neck. Supposedly waits after work can be 15-20 minutes (they don't accept appointments) but I waited all of 2 minutes. I will definitely be getting my next haircut here! read more

Many vintage items to gaze at while you're getting your cut. Keeps the mind occupied thinking about where it all came from. The place looks natural. The hair cuts are OK for the price. I've had way better experiences elsewhere though. First, I'd give a higher rank, but the general atmosphere is a little tense. I've observed many of the workers complain about each other when one leaves. I just want to get a hair cut and ideally relax a bit, not overhearing drama. I'd kind of expect such work drama that from a women's hair salon full of middle age women, not a hipster barber shop with mostly tattooed guys. Second, the other frustration is that may be related to this tension is that when I've gone in to ask for a hair cut I've received mixed signals and had tense interactions. For instance, a couple visits ago I generally liked the hair cut and then asked the barber what I should say to get this haircut again. He said word for word "ask for #3 clippers on the sides/back and cut top accordingly". I said the exact thing to another barber there today and he said that was not sufficient information and seemed really annoyed I didn't know how much hair in inches I wanted taken off at the onset. In the end we worked it out, and it looked fine, and then I asked "how much hair did you take off". His response was "I don't know, I really can't estimate that." It was astounding to me that on the one hand he was he was frustrated I couldn't quickly estimate how many inches I wanted off when we started, and on the other he (who makes his living cutting hair) could not tell me how much hair he literally just cut off. His expectations of me when it comes to hair are higher than that of himself. Which would be fine except for how uptight and put out he was...like me being his customer really bothered him. I honestly think the workers...or at least the one's I've seen...need to simply relax a bit. Every other barber shop I've been too in Baltimore (even the hair cuttery) have provided relatively equivalent hair cuts, but more relaxed experiences such that I don't walk away with a feeling I'm adding to their already unpleasant day/life. Sorry for the long review, but hopefully specifics are useful. I've given this place four tries and the general vibe went from cool/chill at the start to tense/unpleasant recently. Tried several places since I moved to the greater Baltimore area to get a beard trim, since I wear my hair upside down (translation-bald). Excellent work, highly pleased. Staff listens and does a better job than you'd even thought they could do. Parking's a challenge, but super barber. Will be back again for maintenance. read more

Walking in, I felt like I wasn't cool enough to get my hair cut here, but the barbers didn't seem to mind. My barber, Jut, did a great job at a fair price that included a phenomenal pale ale. One of the better barber shops I've been, though I've had some bad cuts here. I've had various barbers take care of me here and my absolute favorite is Sarah. It has been 20 years since I have set foot in a barber shop. The main reason is that I haven't been able to find one that I thought would be a good fit and give me a good cut. My wife found this Yelp page and I had a look at the reviews and pictures. I was sold when I read how much everyone liked it. I went in after work yesterday and had less than a 10 minute wait. Dan was the lad who took care of me. Turns out, he is indeed the owner. Had an interesting conversation about how he got the building. That aside, Dan did a marvelous job at blending my sides with my thinning top. The warm shave of the back of the neck was something I haven't had in years too. All in all, worth the $15. This place is cool and good and everything but's overcrowded. I always have to wait at least half an hour for a haircut. They've got business out their ears; time to branch out. Believe it or not, there are in fact other places to get a really good haircut in Baltimore. Floyd's Barbershops are a great place to start. EDIT: Turns out they're branching out to Remington. Good luck to them. Other than the wait and parking hassles, I enjoyed going to Old Bank. I was always happy with the results and the environment is fun although it seems like the clientele can be a bit antisocial. I only get my hair cut once every few months because I'm lazy, but it's worth it to go out of my way to Old Bank to get it done. The barbers are always on point with their cuts, going fast but also with incredible detail. Expect numerous rounds of tweaking and fixing to make you look as fresh as you possibly can. I usually get a simple cut but judging from the other customers, pretty much any style is on the table. Just make sure to wash out your bed hair before coming (oops). read more

What a great experience...I've been living in Baltimore for about a month and needed to find a place for a haircut for the first time. I wanted a place that was open on Sunday and ended up driving about 15 min from downtown to get here. The place is a classic barbershop with a small but cool-looking setup inside, and I got exactly what I wanted for $16. Barber was quick but definitely not rushing, very careful for the entire cut. Great barber shop! The atmosphere was really cool and down to earth. I did come in around their busy time and had to wait about an hour but it was cool because I had never been in and I got to watch all the care the barbers put in to each haircut. Overall I like the place, the barbers are friendly, attentive and take their time with every customer. They don't take credit cards so bring cash. The worst part is that they don't change blades for every customer but just dip them in some blue solution. That's just disgusting. Somebody should report them as this can transmit HIV and Hepatitis. Blades need to be soaked for hours in alcohol disinfectants or autoclaved at very high temperatures for disinfection, short of which they need to change blades for every customer. With large number of druggies in the area, their practice is just too dangerous. I'd rather pay a dollar more for clean blades. I won't be back. read more

I've gotten a few haircuts at Old Bank (and their other location, Old Market, in Remington), and they've always done a good job. So often with other places it's like I'm rolling dice every time I get a haircut, so much that I just cut my hair myself for a while. But Old Bank's been pretty consistent. There is often a long line, but it moves quickly, and it helps to go outside of peak times. It's cash only, but the ATM at the 7/11 next door is probably free if you have an account from a credit union. read more

I always get my hair cut here and on Wednesday it became even more clear to me why this is the best barbershop in Baltimore. No matter how long the wait is or how may people are waiting to get their hair cut, these guys take their time and do it right. They really really care about their customers. I always wait for BUBS. He takes his profession seriously and it always shows. On Wednesday, as usual, he asked if I wanted product in my hair. As always, I said yes. He was showing me how to use the comb to get the look. Since it's well established this place is amazing, I wanted to simply post and let other short-haired chicks know that this place is great for us too! When I first cut my hair short, I was frustrated with the fact that salons still wanted to charge me $50+ simply because I was a woman, even though they charged guys (with short hair presumably) nearly half that amount. I decided then to switch to barbershops, but struggled through a few awkward haircuts in establishments that definitely were not used to female customers--that is, overly macho masculine environment, and also not understanding that yes I want my hair short, but no I do not want it cut so I look like a boy. I found this place during my hunt and haven't gone anywhere else since! I've gotten my hair cut here 4 times now, each time with a different person, and they've all been amazing. While the clientele is obviously more male based, I never feel unwelcome here. Also a funny note--I was matched with one barber here who, upon seeing I was a chick, immediately gave me the disclaimer that he didn't normally cut woman's hair and that I could choose someone else if I wanted. I told him I trusted him, and it turned out great! If anything, he paid even more attention and was even more careful than others normally are because he wanted to be sure to get it right. Though I have to say, their attention to detail here is staggering--being that I am relatively new to the short hair game, I am still super impressed with how many razors they manage to use in one sitting.. read more

So I was searching around Yelp for barbers. Before I came to this establishment I tried 3 different barbers before and all of them messed my hair beyond measure. One accidentally shaved my beard, another pretty much shaved my head more or less and the other was an improvement but overall I wasn't thrilled. I refrained from coming to OBB because of the distance. I live 75 miles from Baltimore. But after the little mini disasters of my hair I decided to just go for it. And I was not disappointed one bit. My barber knew exactly where I was trying to go with my hair and made improvements as he was going along and explaining things as he went. Which I appreciated very much. I would definitely come back here to get my haircut and even though it's a bit of a drive for me, every mile was worth it! I would recommend this place to anyone!
