We stumbled upon Happy hour (3-6pm, 11-1am), half price on the raw bar menu (oysters, clams, crab claws, lobsters oh my!). They had a good selection of oysters, 6 to choose from. The oysters were fresh and plump. We also ordered a bottle of award winning Sauvignon blanc, highly recommended by the waiter for around $32... great price! It went perfectly with the oysters. This is a cool place, it is about a block from the White House, and it is colonially decorated inside with cherrywood. It is famous for its oysters and they were delicious. The chicken sandwich was also delicious. The key lime pie and apple crumble were also wonderful. Came in last night after getting reservations with a coworker. This place has an old world feel and is gorgeous, lots of wood, marble, paintings and crushed velvet. We were seated shortly after we arrived and received amazing the service the whole dinner. For apps we for the market salad and calamari. Both were fabulous, loved the calamari dipping sauce. My coworker had an old fashioned and loved it. They bring out complimentary bread and butter and it was warm and fresh. For entrees I had the boat house scallops (comes with 7 medium sized) and my coworker had the 8 oz filet. His case with sautéed spinach and mashed potatoes and mine came with farro, butternut squash, and Brussels all mixed together in a delicious sauce. The portions were decent. Overall the food was amazing, service was attentive and quick and drinks were good. Loved the atmosphere- very classic, super busy (for a Tuesday night at 9pm) and lively and a great location. We came on a Sunday. Super busy, but we found bar seats. Our bartender took excellent care of us. She answered my questions on food allergies patiently and even checked with the chef twice; she knew the menu and took our questions seriously! Our food was delicious and came out quickly, in spite of a packed restaurant. Cocktails were made well and it was a lovely experience overall! Bar customers were friendly and chatting without being annoying. Support staff and managers were on hand and you could tell how well everyone worked together. Lots of tourists, and it was entertaining listening to some of their questions. Be patient with the staff! Plenty of tourists seem to think it's okay to berate hosts for waits, ask for things not on the menu, and behave badly. Nice dinner with my son and wife this evening. A California Jane to sip and I started out with a half dozen oysters. They were great! Tabasco, horseradish, cocktail sauce are my way to go. Was torn between steak frites and the jalapeño burger. I went with the jalapeño burger medium rare and the fries. It was cooked close to temp (maybe didn't get enough resting time?) Stopped by Old Ebbitt on a recent trip to DC, particularly for its proximity to the White House. We knew we'd be hungry after a tour and this spot was on quite a few DC must lists. We absolutely loved the vast history of this spot, and the fact that our server was very knowledgeable about that history was a huge plus. Our server Andrew was terrific, he was attentive and he gave us great recommendations. We ordered the Maryland Crab Cake (which is a must), the Pastrami, and the Turkey sandwiches. We also had a couple of oysters. Overall the crab cake was the best - light, flaky and fresh. The sandwiches were great but huge and definitely didn't need a whole. Wish they had a half sandwich option at lunch, as we couldn't really eat our leftovers. Food was great, just overpriced probably due to location. First but not last time. Reunion brunch with long-absent family, so it was planned to be special. And it was. In every way. Wonderful food, easy (Sunday) parking, excellent service (by a Ukrainian waitress we were only too happy to generously tip), right near hotel, in center of town, on lovely May day. Came here on a weekday early evening (5pm) and it was packed! We had to wait a bit but it wasn't too bad. I ordered the chicken wings and my partner ordered the burger. Both came out quick and we enjoyed them. I wouldn't say it was the best we ever had but definitely solid choices. Service was great as well! We liked this place so much we went twice! The food was wonderful! We had the mussels for the appetizer twice. The sauce at the bottom made you want to sip with a straw! The service was impeccable and the recommendations were spot on. We had very good drinks, desert, and main entrees. The ambiance is like the name "Old", but you can feel the history exuding from the walls. Very cool interior. We had a reservation once, and the second time, party of three, no reservation (on a Friday night!), but they got us right in. During me and my buddy's 8-day East Coast Americana Tour through Boston, Cooperstown, Philadelphia, and Washington DC, we were blessed to eat at Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives restaurants, restaurants that should be featured on food shows, and historical eateries. Out of multitude of restaurants we dined in, there was one iconic restaurant that stood out amongst them all. Old Ebbitt Grill (OEG) was the gold standard if we had to identify the best dining experience on our trip. Prior to us departing on this East Coast swing, my buddy imparted effusive praise upon OEG so much so that I was looking forward to experiencing whether the hype was real. Allow me to categorically say that the hype is real and then some. OEG is considered the oldest saloon in DC having been founded in 1856. According to my buddy, this is where the movers and shakers of DC wine and dine with many political bigwigs chowing down here. Where OEG is currently located is their newest iteration having moved to several locations. The restaurant is a hop, skip, and jump from the White House. If not for the White House being cordoned off, this would be ideal restaurant to grab a bite before taking pics of the most famous house in America. Inside OEG is an oasis for history buffs as there are pics of Ulysses S. Grant, modern pics of Clint Eastwood posing in the restaurant while filming the movie "In The Line Of Fire", and there are political themed artwork throughout the dining area. The bar needs to be visited as there are animal trophy heads captured by Teddy Roosevelt and old beer steins. The decor, ambience, and booths give off a classy and refined setting. Our server Gabriela provided impeccable and noteworthy customer service where we felt like we were her only customers based on how well she treated us. Everything from being greeted, the ambience, and incredible customer service were top notch. You would think that the food would match everything else, which it definitely did and then some. This was by far the best foodie experience out of our entire trip. My Shirley Temple beverage was refreshing and just tasted incredible. For appetizers, I ordered the Fried Calamari, which came with pickled cherry peppers, lemon vinaigrette, and remoulade. The calamari was fried perfectly, seasoned, and with a splash of lemon was the perfect starter to jump start our palette. My buddy ordered Oysters On The Half Shell and they were fresh and smooth as I scarfed them down. OEG's fresh bread were addicting and were yummy with the accompanying butter. For my main course, I decided on one of their Old Ebbitt Classic sandwiches, which was called their Walter's Favorite. Trust me when I say to order that sandwich. Walter's Favorite sandwich contains an abundant amount of hot pastrami, Muenster, coleslaw, Thousand Island, and pumpernickel bread. Each bite was tasty, satisfying, and I enjoyed every single bite. We couldn't leave OEG without verifying whether their desserts were as heavenly as their savory food. Heavenly Indeed! We shared a Peanut Butter Pie and a Salted Caramel Bread Pudding. If not for the hearty food, we would have enjoyed those desserts a lot more, but we still managed to eat most of these desserts just enjoying every sweet bite. My buddy hit a bullseye with his recommendation for us to eat dinner at Old Ebbitt Grill. Make sure to make a reservation to guarantee a good time slot for you to dine. I thoroughly enjoyed eating here and the only regret I have is not being able to dine here more than once. It really was that good. read more

Went there on 12/31 with our friends, first time since the pandemic began. Since I'm still wary of catching Covid, I reserved/requested a booth that's away from traffic and they did give me one!! I loved that even though it's one of the busiest restaurants in DC, they still paid attention to my request and tried to accommodate it. Our waiter was Ross, he was awesome--very humorous, professional and really knows what he was doing. I had the crab cake and my husband had chicken and french toast (it's supposed to be chicken and waffle but they were able to change it to french toast! another plus!) Both were fantastic. This place is crowded! Our initial wait time was 30mins for 3 ppl around 1:15p on Saturday 31st. We got in and out within 45mins. Less than 5mins of wait time, 15mins for food to hit our table. The place is noisy just like an English pub, service was quick and well paced out, sandwiches were pretty darn big. My son had Walter's favorite, I, Reubens and my husband the lobster roll. The lobster roll was small for the price but good. My son and I really enjoyed our sandwiches. I could have taken half of mine back to the hotel but my husband ate it. Old Ebbitt Grill is a classic D.C. institution serving up oysters, seafood entrees, chowders, great sandwiches, and of course bacon horseradish glazed meatloaf. Just skip the New England Clam Chowder, as there are better options out there. We had the Oysters Rockefeller to start which were good but nothing to write home about. The best thing here was the meatloaf. The bacon horseradish glaze was extremely flavorful and the dish itself was tender and well prepared. I would highly recommend it for first time visitors. The crab cakes were also very fresh and rich in flavor. I just wish I had more time with the meatloaf, as it was quickly devoured. The old-school feel of this place is apparent the minute you walk in the door with waiters and waitresses wearing white button downs with suspenders, and paintings of historic Washington D.C. landmarks on the walls. It felt like stepping into a part of history itself (which makes sense considering it's D.C.'s oldest bar and restaurant) Very cool place and I'll definitely be returning someday to try some of the other items available. read more

Old Ebbitt certainly lived up to expectations. This is an old-school place with vibes to match, and it's packed. But as solo diner I had no trouble getting seating at the bar even during peak dinner time on probably the busiest Sunday in a while (the weekend of peak cherry blossoms with beautiful 60 degree weather). Anyway, the focus here is on just quality ingredients done simply. I got half a dozen oysters + a few shrimp cocktail, and they tasted super fresh. For my entree I got their crab cakes, which were also excellent. Very little filler, and again the ingredients spoke for themselves. Minor gripe was I would have preferred crispier Brussels sprouts, but then again they did nicely sub out fries for them, so I can't complain too much. If you come here looking to eat quality seafood in a very central location (close to the White House!), you won't be disappointed. This was our second time there and this place has a good amount of significance to us - where we had our first formal dinner together as a couple and then 4 years later where we had our post-engagement brunch. We came here as a group of 5 people. My partner and I ordered the Chesapeake Bennie and the salmon salad. The potatoes that come with the bennies are amazing - perfectly crispy and flavored. The bennies itself was also pretty good. The Chesapeake has crab cake was good bc the bread crumbs had a good amount of seasoning and they blended well together. The salmon salad was very lemony. What caught me off guard about the salmon was that it had a lot of small bones in it - unusual for the salmon I usually get. The salad itself also did not have much to it - the Brussels sprouts were raw and flavorless and the rest of the lettuce shredding was also not very great because they were not flavorful. For 5 people it was about $110 for brunch, so it didn't really break the bank to eat there in the day time, but it's still a fancy-ish and was not as expensive for dinner. read more

What a great recommendation from Capital Segway to eat dinner for lunch at Old Ebitt Grill. The place was packed even at 1 PM but we got great seats at the bar. This historic place is just a precious jewel, bartenders and waiters in dress shirts and bow ties, the whole place had a cool vibe. Started the decadence with the perfect crunchy buffalo wings served with both ranch and blue cheese dressing with a cup of the best New England clam chowder better than the one in Boston. Then we split a perfect medium rare pimento cheddar cheeseburger that was juicy and just delicious served with a side caesar salad with yummy homemade croutons with a true homemade caesar dressing. Brian loved his meatloaf (good mushroom sauce), but I thought the swiss chard was what made it. The vintage Victorian ambience is inviting and cozy. There is beautiful eye-catching artwork throughout the restaurant. Also, the location is a bonus, and there is ample seating. We ordered oysters, crab dip, pasta, crab cakes, wine, etc. You have to make a reservation. It is very busy here. We loved the food. Complimentary bread and butter was great. Crab cake had a lot of crab meat. Only negative was the server. She brought our white wine and it was warm. I asked her to give us a cold bottle. We also let the server know that we are doing a family style but she didn't bring us any serving utensils. When we asked for those things, she was visibly annoyed.
