Parking for me was pretty easy as I found street parking right in front of the restaurant, my cousin parked in the garage. This matchbox is pretty big and it was decorated really nice. We were seated immediately for lunch and our server assisted us with the lunch options. I chose the mushroom pizza and soup. And my cousin had apple pear and soup of the day. For the $14.99 price it was worth it we had pizza left to take home. For $34 All-You-Can-Eat Brunch and the opportunity to sample EVERYTHING, yes, you read that right, EVERYTHING, on the menu, within 2-hours, is a steal and downright criminal...but you won't be arrested, just FULL! For an additional $25, you can have All-You-Can-Eat Drinks. You can choose from Bloody Mary's, Strawberry Lemonade Margaritas, Peach Bellinis, Old Fashions, again, robbery. They keep the food and drinks coming. We sampled everything from the Pesto Chicken Pizza. Small sized vs personal. Fried Chicken Wings come with either Old Bay, Mambo Sauce or Buffalo. Can't go wrong with either. You get about 4 in the sample. Catfish is fried and seasoned to perfection. Comes with a side of bland and our initial serving was cold grits, as if they were pre-plated. The portion is about 2 full tablespoons, in a miniature 2.5 oz. stainless steel sauce round. Steak and eggs with potatoes is a slivered serving of steak, cooked to your doneness but unseasonably and tough. Eggs scrambled with Cheddar. Potatoes were small round home fries. 3, 6, 9 Burgers are Beef Sliders topped with a mound of shoestring Onion Rings. You can choose between a leg or breast for their Chicken & Waffle. The Waffle's, two (2) pieces of one (1) half (2 quarter pieces.) There's SO MUCH to choose from. We didn't even get to the Pancakes and French Toast offerings. We came here for a group lunch. Matchbox has lots of seating and is good for large groups. They had large tv screens showing the latest sports news. The atmosphere was lively during a weekday lunch. They also had WiFi available. They have a $15 lunch special where you can get a small personal pizza and a cup of soup or side salad. I ordered the grilled chicken and avocado sandwich ($19) which comes with a side of fries and a pickle spear. It was just okay. They serve shoestring fries - just like McDonalds, but not as golden and not as crispy. The sandwich had good structure and was filling, but the chicken was bland and dry. I could've used some more sauce. I think I'm used to Nando's chicken which is moister and full of saucy flavor. Other people at the table ordered the fish and chips ($24) which looked good - it came with two large, meaty pieces of cod and the same shoestring fries. Also on the menu - Matchbox now serves sushi! Service was sufficient but a little absentminded, particularly for drinks. Some people never got their water (I think she forgot) and drinks were never refilled - cups were empty. We were checked on a couple of times, but drink service was often overlooked. Food trickled out for our group. It came in about three waves. It was a reasonable wait (nothing offensively long), but it's always nice when the food comes out at the same time, or when some verbal acknowledgement is given to say that everyone's food would be out shortly. The atmosphere at Matchbox is very causal and great for families who want fantastic food or for wanting to grab some drinks and appetizers with friends. Ordered the BBQ Jerk pizza. I ate the whole pie and it was seasoned well and had a kick to the pizza. I also ordered a Cesar Side salad and for being just a salad the croutons were made daily from bread. The lettuce was very fresh and moth withered at all and was the perfect amount of Cesar dressing. I also ordered the watermelon patio pounder. It was a light cocktail but after a few you may feel it. Food and service was excellent. Happy Hour specials are worth giving a try. Ended with an old fashion that is served with little smoke from a small torch that adds a heavy smoky flavor which I have never seen at table side. read more

Very cool restaurant with live music - atmosphere was upbeat and lively for 2:30pm on a Saturday! We found 2 seats at the bar and got a quick lunch. While in DC, we decided to come here for brunch to take advantage of their AYCE brunch. I also wanted to order one of everything LOL When our server finally came back we quickly learned that if you're doing unlimited both parties have to order it at the bar table and since my friend only wanted something small to eat, that wasn't going to work for us. Now, I was faced with the decision of trying to decide on one item only! Do you know how hard it is for me to decide before going to a restaurant, as I'm looking at their menu, on what I would like to eat? I just asked our server to put in my friend's order and come back for mine. As we sat there, we wondered if we should have sat at the bar instead so I could have ordered my unlimited and they could have only ordered what they wanted. It was interesting because we asked the server this and they replied the same rule would apply for the bar, which didn't make sense because if I'm sitting at the bar I'm responsible for my own bill. But ok . . . . I decided to go with the shrimp and grits and asked for the sauce on the side after I confirmed the sausage didn't contain pork. The grits came out fresh and seasoned with unoverbaring cheese. The shrimp are an afterthought though since they didn't have any seasoning at all. They are highly depending upon that cajun sauce to season the shrimp when it should be simmered in it or at least he's in with those same spices that the sauce contains. My stomach started turning on first bite which made me happy I didn't go with the unlimited because I don't know if I would have been able to eat more. Food tastes good. Portion size was good for the burger and fries but the salad wasn't that substantial and a little small for an "entree" priced dish. Service started a little rough. Waiters were arguing amongst each other while a few tables waited to be seated. It took a while to get going but eventually they resolved their situation and service improved. This is a great family friendly option in Penn Quarter. We were looking for someplace that everyone in the family could find something to eat and this fit the bill. My son is obsessed with pepperoni pizza and their kids pizza is 10 inches which is a great size. My child ate the whole thing! He loved it my husband and I split a 14 inch pizza, which was plenty for the two of us. The pizza was served very quickly, which was great. My husband also ordered the crab soup which he thought was outstanding. They also have other people pleaser foods like burgers and fries. Delicious!! The hot honey pizza was to die for! And the dessert was HUGE and delicious!! I would definitely recommend stopping by after a long day of walking and activities. The pizzas were pretty big and you'll definitely fill up if you compliment with an appy or dessert. We came here after visiting the national gallery of art and the walk was bearable. Found this place while looking for a happy hour after a day of museums. The happy hour is pretty decent. $10 drinks and some food items as well. The pizza was okay, I feel like it could have had more flavor and we chose the pizza because the other pizzas looked delicious around us. We also shared a smash burger that was not pictured. It was just a bit confusing. They brought food out to our table and it was 2 smash burgers and they brought an extra plate on the side. I guess they had given us the wrong food because we asked for a smash burger to be cut in half. Instead of leaving one of the burger orders on our table, they took all the food off our table. A few minutes later, the burger cut in half was given to us on separate plates.. with no fries. I was confused because our burger came on separate plates, so I assumed the fries on the separate plate was supposed to go with our burger. Because everyone else around us was getting fries with their burger order on their plates. We asked if the burger was supposed to come with fries.. and they said no because it was happy hour. But everyone else was getting it with fries.. they ended up giving us a plate of fries for the burger. Our waiter was so kind and so nice and gave us suggestions. I ordered the Nashville hot chicken sandwich and it came out as a plain fried chicken sandwich (or the hot sauce was unnoticeable) the chicken was a bit over cooked and dry with some burnt breading around the edges. The mediocre: I was seated at the bar and service was friendly and attentive though the bartender was issuing a lot more apologies to diners than should be required. The double bacon burger came well done when it should have been medium. We had to send it back because the egg was not fried hard enough and then came back still under cooked. The presentation of the chicken sandwich could have been better since I altered the request. She mentioned offering us a fried onions to taste but then bought us a side of fried onions that she changed us for. And my drink was forgetting about!!!! Had to get a manager to get it. Well DAMN! We went to this Matchbox Penn Quarter location TWICE IN AS MANY WEEKS. Both times for a pre-game dinner before a Wash Caps hockey game at CapOne Arena so we were surrounded by our fellow loyal Caps fans and felt the love all around us. If you're attending an event (like a Caps game) at the arena and have the forethought to plan ahead, DEFINITELY MAKE RESERVATIONS. Don't think you won't need them - you will. I always say - if you can, why wouldn't you??? Matchbox is super convenient to the arena, blocks away walking distance so it's a great place to have a pre-event meal. We've been to Matchboxes in other locations in NoVA and this one in Penn Quarter is one of the best run of the bunch. Clean, inviting, a high energy and fun ambiance when it's packed to the gills - it's loud and boisterous but we wouldn't have it any other way (maybe it's just the rowdy but respectful Caps' fan energy - especially during OV's GR8 CHASE!). Service is exceptional. This place knows how to handle a pre-event crowd. We got seated within 10 minutes of our reservation. Management is visible and servers know their s***! They don't rush you to turn tables - they let you hang and enjoy, when you're ready to order, they're there at your service and the food comes out piping hot without an inordinate wait. Perfecto. And then POOF, everyone dashes out to make the event. Stellar staff. AND THE FOOD! Probably the best food over any Matchbox we've been to. Fresh, served piping hot and DEEEEEELICIOUS hands down. Matchbox is a DC staple. If you are visiting be sure to visit the location nearest you. This was my first visit to the Penn Quarter location. This location is just a block from the Capital One arena . Now ambiance, it's a little tight in there and the hostess wasn't the friendliest, but all is forgiven because of the food and our server- Maya B who was impeccable. We were a large party with a reservation and Mya B did her thang! She was very attentive, observant and polite. Now the food was a hit too. I didn't know they served brunch until 3pm, so we had a great selection from the menu. I had the crispy chicken sandwich. And based on the description with the egg salad topping, I was very confused and hesitant.. I had it prepared Nashville hot by the way. And one word comes to mind on first bite! Scrumptious! It was sooooooo good. I'm craving it as I'm writing this review. lol! It came with a side of fries. Those were average. I also had the ahi tuna tartare as a starter and it too was yummy. So over score, 8.8 and that's only because of my flat coke. I don't drink coke a cola often, but it's the burn that I was expecting but didn't get. Oh yeah how could I forget to mention our seating , this place is small and narrow ... we happened to be seated right at the door.. we were a party of 10.. did I mention it was cold outside . and the cold breeze would hit us every time that the door opened . A very cool and chill vibe! A great menu with pretty standard (but very well executed) pub fare. The "pig" tavern pizza was excellent, and the crust was thin and crispy as it should be! The nachos were perfect, NOT the soggy mess that they can be, but still with plenty of the good stuff. The ribs were smoky and super tender with some kind of ginger garlic glaze. The drink selection was pretty decent, and happy hour pricing made for a much lighter bill. Service (the very friendly Manuel) was friendly and quick, the music selection was 80s to 2000s rock, and there were several big screens throughout the restaurant. The batter was not thoroughly fried...dark on the outside gooey on the inside. The fries were semi warm, okay to eat. The dark stairway to the bathroom went 16 steep black steps down to a basement bathroom. Not sure how a person with physical limitations would get there. Jose was great though! I'm so glad we stopped here after the holiday market. My kids were tired from the long lines and wanted something quick for dinner but I took a risk and stopped here. We were seated right away and ordered drinks. We ordered calamari for appetizers and then our food. It surprisingly came out quicker than I expected and it was as good too! My kids destroyed the pizza and the Caesar salad was good! We didn't order any dessert. There is a lot of room for football fans to sit and watch the game. There's also outdoor seating if you want to brave the cold but fear not they have heat lamps outside too. The portions were good and I for sure thought we would lose this match and take leftovers in a box. Let's just say we walk away with the W!
