We visited Old Ebbitt Grill on a Sunday morning because it was located very close to our hotel. We arrived at 10:15 for our open table reservation and were seated immediately. Once seated, it took quite some time to order. I ordered the huevos rancheros and my husband ordered the healthy omelet. Due to some dietary restrictions I asked for mine to be changed a bit. The food seemed to take quite a while to arrive to our table. I would guess approximately 40 mins. Our waiter didn't check on us during that time. I will give credit to say that he was extremely busy, but we've all been in the situation where are say "is the food ever going to get here?" And you always appreciate the communication that it will be out soon. We didn't receive this communication or any other during our wait. Once the food arrived it was hot, but mine was missing one ingredient. I didn't get to advise the waiter because he did not check on us until I was nearly finished. After waiting so long for the food, I didn't want to wait any longer to eat. Cute restaurant with a good deal oysters for happy hour, but the experience was just so so. read more

Old Ebbitt Grill is a favorite of mine. For starters, let's talk about prime real estate - Old Ebbitt is couple of feet from the White House, and beautiful downtown DC. I have the pleasure of eating dinner at this amazing restaurant whenever my Vice President comes to town because it's his favorite restaurant, and had the pleasure of being able to do so again last Wednesday, and had a completely different experience. My company rented out their private dining area so we didn't have the issue of being crammed in with the restaurants other patrons - Old Ebbitt Grill is ALWAYS very busy. We had our own servers, our own open bar, and a delicious prosciutto, cheese, crackers, and fruit display that everyone loved and frequented more than once. I know I did. Then came the meal. The Mixed greens were really good but the Jumbo Lumped Crabcakes entree was the star of the show. The crabcakes are this restaurants specialty, and while I've heard people complain about the size of them, they definitely make up for it with how tasty they are. No filler, all crab meat. The roasted potatoes were a nice touch as well. For dessert I had the bourbon bread pudding which was also delicious. Good service. Good food. Beautiful ambiance. And a consistency of excellence... Needing to eat after walking forever is never a good thing, but it does lead to good things. Good things like Old Ebbitt Grill. I'll be honest with you, I had no idea this place existed, but being from out of town you don't know your surroundings. Thanks to the handy Yelp app for this suggestion. When I walked in I thought that I should have just turned around and left. Not because of anything they did, but because I felt like I was under dressed. Then it dawned on me, I am in a part of DC where loads of business people work. After going through the revolving door I was greeted quickly by the hostess and was about to be taken to a table, but I insisted that I would rather sit at the bar. She then said to me, "Which bar?" OK, you are asking an out-of-towner which bar, I was just happy that you had one instead of more than one. So I was escorted by what I am assuming was one of the managers to the bar behind the main bar. Conveniently located right next to where the oysters are prepared (if that's your thing). I actually liked this area because it was kind of secluded. Once seated I was given a menu by an amazing bartender. I really wish I could remember your name darling because you were a great help with more than just the service. I have to thank you for your tips you gave me about what to do next in the area because they worked like a charm. You never missed a beat and you were so easy to talk to, you deserve a raise or something because of how well you handle yourself and treat the customer. After looking of the menu I decided that I would go with a cheeseburger. I think what convinced me was seeing that the beef is locally sourced. At 6 3/4 ounces, it's a pretty big patty. With a cheeseburger you get your choice of cheese, of course I went with old faithful American cheese, because if you're in DC why not get American cheese. I also liked that you get to choose your side and the selections are pretty amazing. Hand cut fries, potato salad, Cole slaw, seasonal fruit or a small salad. Of course I went with the hand cut fries, it's a classic pairing for a burger. This also comes with a pickle spear kind of making is a classic cheeseburger meal. The taste of this thing was near perfection. I am not sure how they seasoned it, but the burger itself was mouth watering and it didn't hurt that the cheese melted around the burger patty encasing it and trapping the flavor. The fries were great as well. Kind of reminds you of shoestring fries which is amazing for being hand cut. Nice and crispy and salted just right. Washing this all down with a nice cold beer would have been a nice way to end the day, however it was only lunch time. I felt like I needed a nap after this meal. read more

Very classy bistro. We came at 5pm on a Sunday and the restaurant was full. We waited for about 20 minutes for a table for 4, which I thought was not bad at all. The servers were very friendly in explaining the menu and dishes she'd recommend. We got steak frites, two crab cakes, lobster roll, and oysters rockefeller to share. The food came out pretty fast and everyone loved what they ordered. I highly recommend the crab cake. It was super fresh, sweet, and pan-seared so not greasy at all. The lettuce and tomato that came with the sandwich were also fresh and crunchy. I was looking for a place to have some late night dining, so I decided to come back to an all DC staple. I hadn't been to this restaurant in quite a few years, so I decided to give it a return. We were immediately seated, and the server was very attentive from start to finish. We had the crabcake, which was a bit small but full of lump crab, so definitely worth it. And the other choice entrée was the meatloaf. The first thing I noticed when the meatloaf came out was the portion - it was huge. The meatloaf was on top of a mound of creamy mashed potatoes, and topped with a dark horseradish sauce. The presentation was great and everything was well seasoned. Came for the first time for my birthday dinner and must say I enjoyed it! I liked how the interior looked and the history this place has. Can see why it's so packed and would recommend to make a reservation. Wait times seem like they'd be long but there's a bar where you could have a drink/small bites while you wait. We started off with the crab & artichoke dip and a dozen oysters. The baguette, the dip comes with, was lightly toasted and so soft! The choice of oysters were recommended by our kind server and they did not disappoint! Chicken fettuccine and the steak frites were the entrees. Sauce of the pasta was delicious and the steak was cooked perfectly to the way we ordered. Amazing food + fast/friendly service = Great bday dinner! We came for brunch. The drinks did not impress. My bees knees needed some major stirring or shaking and a dash of who knows what. I really should have just sent it back. But the coffee was great. The food was really good. The crab cakes were delicious. I love the sweet potato strings which added some crunch. Apart from my drink disaster this place lives up to the iconic reputation. It's a fun spot when you are visiting the nation's capital. The wait was not as bad as we thought. Walking in, be prepared for a wait if you don't have a reservation. But! It's probably just a 5 minute wait until the staff can shuffle together what tables are available. I'm amazed at how quickly they worked to get us a spot at the bar and eventually at a table. We stopped in for a late-night meal after arriving in town. We were immediately seated and greeted by our waiter, who was so attentive. We ordered the oysters (because everyone says it's a must) and a Cesar salad. The oysters were delicious! The Cesar salad was great too and came out fairly quickly. For our main courses, we ordered the meatloaf and the bacon cheeseburger. The meatloaf was delicious it was glazed with a bacon-horseradish sauce and came with potatoes, swiss chard, and mushrooms. My boyfriend did not leave a single piece. The bacon cheeseburger was cooked to my liking and was delicious. They give you multiple options for cheese, so I went with muenster. Overall, the service was excellent and quick, and we enjoyed our meal. I will definitely be coming back. read more

I just couldn't find a lot of good food while I was in DC but, too my chances in a burger from this place. Our hotel clerk recommended this place to us. My husband and I both ordered cheeseburgers, an order of bbq wings instead of buffalo, fries, and lemonade. I really liked the complimentary bread, it was nice and crusty just like I like it. The burgers were quite good but, should be served with some onions. Next time I'll ask. However, I didn't like the bbq sauce for the wings. The sauce tasted slightly gritty and tasted nothing like bbq sauce. They might've tasted better if I would've ordered them buffalo style. My lemonade was watered down and had to use sugar to sweeten it. However, I might return on our next trip. read more

Absolutely phenomenal! If I could I would have tried every single dish on the menu! Extremely busy restaurant, average wait is 2.5 hours for a table, I would recommend to reserve way in advance. We didn't have reservations but were fortunate enough to snug a few seats at one of the bars in the back. Started off with some oysters- super clean, very fresh and extremely flavorful, probably the best oysters I have ever had! Crab and artichoke dip was perfectly hot, creamy and had a nice smooth finish. We substituted polenta with some pasta and it really complemented the soft and excellent tasting meatballs. Now the star of the night for me was the pork chop- it was very thick however was cooked to perfect medium rare- soft, juicy, glistening and absolute perfection. We were in DC on a business trip and heard about the history of this place and wanted to experience it. The experience and service was exceptional. The crab cakes are hands down the best I've ever had and underpriced. These are a bargain I'll get every time I'm in DC. I'd recommend reservations for dinner as the place was packed when congress was in session. The wine is also reasonably priced which was a nice surprise. The catfish was not worth even one star and the shrimp soup was like vegetable soup with a shrimp thrown in it. I don't recommend either. The peanut butter pie for desert is amazing so save some room! read more

I was in DC a couple weeks for a short while. Had the opportunity to take a break for a late lunch here after we toured the National Archives and Art Museum. I had a very close friend guiding me in town, so even the party of 3 that we be had a reservation for this Old Ebbitt Grill, which was smart, a lot of folks know of this landmarked eatery. We had a drink at the awesomely historic bar while we waited to be seated, a nice cool place on a hot DC afternoon. I was having the DC Brau "The Public" Pale Ale draught, someone had a Shirley temple and the other, the Bourbon Peach Sangria (which I tasted, loved the beer and Sangria, out of this world.) After we sat, a round of starters were ordered. The Cheese Sampler, Fried Calamari, and my fresh oyster's order. I love raw oysters. I have been wanting to get up this way to have some VA oysters on the half shells since the farming began again. I had a few pieces from the cheese sampler, all were extraordinary, but the dozen oysters I had, split 4 ways made my day. They had every condiment necessary and even items I don't prefer. I had 3 of the sweet finish VA harvested selections and another brinier finish one to finish it off. I washed them down with my Draught beer and an oyster shooter with a Pemaquid, plump in the shell raw oyster. I never got a piece of the Calamari, but it was all eaten and I saw a happy face. It was a most excellent start to what turned out to be a very satisfying meal that all of my party enjoyed. Even though this place was packed and people kept coming and going, all of our items were coming out in perfect time and the wait staff was extremely attentive. Our entrée's came after our second drink order was delivered, still having a satisfied feeling from the start, I started with the Maryland Crab Soup, it was delicious, I love the taste of fresh sweet crab meat. My main, main coarse was the Shrimp Spahettini. OMG, the shrimp, about the size of 16-20 were perfectly cooked and everything washed down like butter,,, well,, the wine-lemon butter it all sat in. Oh,, I would definitely say if you come around here,, get you a table here because it's a heck of an experience, and the actual meal goes right along with it ,,, you really couldn't think of a better place to share a meal with family and friends in downtown DC than here. If and when I come back, ill be checking in here again. read more
