Finally a barbecue place on the island that I can enjoy! It's nice to not have to travel to the city or Brooklyn for delicious bbq. To start, you wait on line to place your order. If you don't know what you want, you get a chance to pass their beautiful display of the meats being served for the day. They only take your order at the register if a table is ready or on the way to being ready which really didn't take a long time as I originally thought. We opted for some brisket, but they had a special of corned beef brisket, so we got a 1/4 lb of each, with some ribs, smoked chicken, and mashed potatoes, the burnt end baked beans and pickled veggies. The meats were my favorite, and although the chicken was juicier than most chickens I've ever had, I still think the meats stole the show. The brisket was perfectly seasoned and had the right amount of fat to meat ratio. I highly recommend the pickled veggies just because when you're eating that fatty delicious bbq, the pickled veggies really help cut the fat and I think it helped me eat more! The burnt end baked beans were also a huge hit for us. They're smoky, sweet, tangy and go really well with everything. The sauces at the table were really good too! I heard about Old Fields a while back and I was excited to try it. Long Island doesn't have a lot of great BBQ options so I was hoping it'd be great. I went for dinner with a friend about a month ago on a Saturday. The inside of the place is pretty wooden and dark. There is a bar up front when you walk in, and you go to the back to place your order. Place was pretty packed out so we ended up eating at a table outside. The staff there seemed very nice, accommodating, and checked on us often. So we ordered one order of brisket ($13), one order of St. Louis Ribs ($13), cole slaw ($3), mashed potatoes ($5), and mac and cheese ($6). Prices seem very reasonable at first glance. But we got our food and it didn't really seem like that much food considering we spent like $43.45 total (before tip). Also, our food wasn't hot off the press. It wasn't even reheated or anything; it was cold. Digging in, I found that everything we ordered tasted good. Everything tasted like it was prepared from scratch. No complaints whatsoever about the sides. The brisket felt very tender, but it was a little tougher than I anticipated when I bit into it. It was still very enjoyable though. I actually thought the ribs were better. They had a lot of flavor and I could eat like 5 lbs of them. If the meat was hot it definitely would have opened up the flavor immensely. The BBQ sauces they had was pretty solid too. So based on what I described, 2 stars might seem a bit harsh, but I scrutinize value very heavily when I review places and I felt that it was the missing component here. I actually wasn't that hungry when we were having dinner, so on a hungrier day I would have ordered more. I spent over $50 (including tip) which comes out to at least $25 per person. We didn't even get drinks (we just got a jug of water). So to spend $25 and not really be full is pretty bad. If anything, adjusting the portion sizes could go a long way in my opinion. Absolutely excellent BBQ here on Long Island. Thanks to a recommendation from Yelp, we picked Old Fields and very happy we did. Our family of 4 shared the brisket, pork ribs with sides of Mac & Cheese + Mashed Potatoes. The kids also has a cheeseburger and fried chicken sandwich. All for under $70...definitely not cheap but everything was delicious. Service is typical of some of the trendy BBQ places like Hill Country - you order at a counter in the back of the restaurant and then they bring your food to you at a table. It appears that guests are seated during peak times but, when we visited on a Saturday afternoon, we got to pick our booth. A great resource on the North Shore...will gladly return soon! read more

I don't recall having better barbecue in the area, and this includes Biscuits & Barbecue in Mineola (though that place has really good barbecue, too!) First of all, the seating/service - you choose your own seating, and put in your own food order, at the back counter. Drinks are handled by wait staff, and when we were there, only one bartender was covering all beverage service. She was hustling, but she needed help. Could be pandemic staffing levels, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. At any rate, OF could do a better job explaining the ordering to newbs, and that's on them. But once you understand it, you're good. As for the food, I'm not sure if this is a standard barbecue thing, but the meat isn't dressed much, you have to add your own sauce using the bottles provided. Every time I come here it's always been good. A lot of BBQ places are not consistent but this place definitely is. I've had many things on the menu and nothing was ever disappointing. They also offer a more L.I. style dining experience but allow you to see the proteins you are going to order. Other NY BBQ joints you order off a menu, playing Russian roulette with your meal, and in Texas you get basically a high quality buffet in a dining room that you would be convinced is 200 years old. With Old Fields BBQ, you get the best of all worlds!!! Favorites were the Fried Chicken, brisket, and the creamed spinach but don't let my limited comments on what we order take away from the fact that we ordered 11 menu items and loved almost all of them!!! Use the vinegar sauce on the table for the brisket (trust me), and the Habanero Mango sauce on EVERYTHING ELSE!!! RECOMMENDED I hosted a dinner for 8 on January 31, 2019 at Old Fields Barbecue ("OFB") for my relatively new second dining group "Let's Eat Huntington". Prices are very reasonable at OFB, especially when you consider that barbecue is very labor intensive. The barbecue rocks! Finding parking is hard in Huntington.The odds may be slightly better here because this restaurant is directly adjacent to a large municipal lot. I snagged a space easily, maybe because this was and will be regarded as, one of the coldest evenings of the year. I entered the front entrance to observe an attractive bar area. The dining area is to the rear. OFB features at least six rotating selections of draft beers. I enjoyed two or them, the most delightful being the Saranac Moose Ale. OFB also has a creative cocktail menu. The ordering process is atypical. You order at the rear counter area and are assigned a number(yes....it is an actual physical number). The waiter brings the food and tallies your damage according to your number when you finish your meal. Those who dine with deadbeats should like this process because it generates individual, as opposed to group, checks. Our group chose a very large table to the rear which is not visible from the bar. Onto the food.....I initially ordered Corned Beef (a special that evening),a 1/2 Smoked Chicken and Creamed Spinach. I ordered Corn Bread after seeing my dining mates drool over it (more about that later). The Corned Beef, arriving in two thick slices, was not orgasmic. It was MULTI-ORGASMIC. Think Katz's cubed and multiplied by infinity. PLEASE put it on the regular menu. It was so damn moist (yup...there's that word) and tasty. The Smoked Chicken, however, was cold and severely lacking in smoky flavor. I will not order it again. The Creamed Spinach was outstanding. It had great flavor and a very nice bechamel sauce supplying the cream. Yummo! My fellow diners were enjoying the Corn Bread so I had to indulge. It arrived in a very large potion. It was moist (there you go again), properly sweet with a nice chew to the crust. Aside from giving a small piece to my neighbor, I ate the whole thing (very happily). Dishes recommended by the others include Pulled Pork, Pork Spare Ribs, Brisket and Chorizo Sausage. I definitely will indulge in the aforementioned items when I return, with or without my dining groups. Finally, our waiter, Victor, was outstanding. He was personable and very attentive to our group's needs. BOTTOM LINE: OFB sets a very high bar for Long Island BBQ joints. Right off the main strip is some of the best bbq I've had on the island. Very relaxed atmosphere you walk in and right past a nice big bar. Once you order your food which smells amazing you are given a number to pick a table and a waiter comes to take your drink order. Andy our waiter was awesome, super friendly and we had a great time laughing with him. The food was outstanding!!! We tried the ribs, brisket, pulled pork, all mouth watering. Our first time at Old Fields BBQ and I can't say enough good things about the food, the service, and the great background music they play. I had a special; the smoked turkey BLT with garlic aïoli. We'd eaten at Old Fields BBQ several times pre-COVID, but something about this pandemic makes me want to mainline brisket, so we've had takeout an embarrassing number of times since this all began. Really appreciate the online ordering option. Literally everything is great here, though my family especially loves the fried chicken, chorizo, and brisket of course. I *always* get the pickled veggies as a side, as they're the perfect complement to all that unctuous meat (please make the portion size bigger!), and the fam loves the mac n cheese and burnt ends baked beans. Never forget cornbread. Always great service, even when they're slammed. I'm not sure we've ever even had an error or mix up on an order. My only minor complaint is that on occasion there is just way too much fat on the brisket--and I'm not squeamish or averse to fatty meat obvs. It's also served by weight, so it's a bummer when an excessive amount of that is inedible. Such a trendy, well-thought-out space where no detail of decor was missed. The whole flow of being serviced was confusing. You walk in and there's a bar and then bar tables on the side but there's more seating in the back but no one to seat you. And all of a sudden a man came out of no where to tell you how it works if it's your first time. Apparently, the front is for drinks and they take food orders there but you head to the back to order if you don't want drinks. Okay, cool.. So we're in the back and there's a display of meats and only one item had a label so you kind of had to guess on what's what. The staff was pretty helpful and even let my friend try the pulled pork before she committed to purchasing a whole order. To make it simple, I got the half rack of ribs, mac n cheese and cornbread and my friend gets the half chicken with mashed potatoes. I personally thought it was overpriced considering you pay for the meat by itself which runs between $8-$13 and the sides are separate and run $3-$7 so my meal was $24 alone for pre-made food plus a $2+ for my strange tasting Coke. Ribs were pretty good and my friend's chicken needed a little less seasoning, it was overpowering. Now, I'm not a chef but I do enjoy cooking so I can kind of figure out what it is that I'm not a fan of. The Mac and cheese had a very thick roux to the point where a few bites leaves you feeling like you're weighing an extra 5 pounds. Needed more cheese flavor and less milk/flour to lighten it up. I like the concept though of the creamy Mac n cheese. My friend's mashed potatoes were also doused with a milk or cream product, to the point where it was kind of watery looking and dissolved in your mouth immediately. Wasn't a fan. But the cornbread. OH, MAN. Whatever your recipe is, please don't change it. Perfect combination of honey and buttery goodness and not dry at all. Would I go back here? For the cornbread, hell yes. That said, you'll surely be full afterwards. The brisket is tender but somewhat bland. It screams for the Smokey & sweet bbq sauce, which I will say does in fact make it very good. The sausage links are nice, as is the pulled pork, but again both are better with the sauce than without. The Mac and cheese was probably the best side we had, not too heavy nor too cheesy. Real barbecue is cooked "low and slow" - for example, my ribs take about 6 hours, pulled pork 8-10, and brisket about 12 hours. Old Fields does it SO RIGHT! Meticulously crafted foods with a home made touch. Perfectly smoked and cooked with flavor IN the food, not added on top. And while they offer 4 different barbecue sauces, you need none or very little to complement their flavorful goodies. The ribs just about fall off the bone yet have enough "chew" to make them interesting. The brisket is remarkable; the chicken is tops. I could go on and on, but I'll cut to the chase. This place is great! The food is excellent. The huge serving of cornbread has a crackly top and is drizzled with just the right amount of honey syrup. So far I've tried the brisket, sausage, pulled pork, and chicken. The portions are generous and filling, the brisket us so so tender and perfectly seasoned. If you normally avoid eating the chicken skin, this is not the place for that...the spice rub on the chicken skin is great. At each table there's four different bbq sauces to choose from; I was hesitant to try the Carolina vinegar bbq sauce at first because it (a) says vinegar and (b) is really watery, but it's now my favorite bbq sauce. Gives just the right amount of tang to the meats. I liked the beet salad, only thing I'd change about it is to lessen the dressing. The interior is really well put together and unique. On nice days they open the garage door at the front of the restaurant and you can just walk in off the street. The chef, Scott, is friendly and helpful and clearly very good at what he does. When you walk in, walk past the bar to the back counter where you can order what you would like and then you seat yourself with your food. They have a busboy who helps clear tables and can set a table up for you if you're looking. The menu isn't too extensive, it's simple but that's what makes it great.
